one thing that everyone who is rona-dhona'ing should remember... the rankings of indian athletes is gradually improving. we were finishing in 10-20 in London, now that is looking more like 5-10. a few have missed medals by a very narrow margin

overall the athletes have done a fantastic job considering all the difficulties they face

as abhinav bindra has pointed out - the UK spends £5.5m per medal and there are now extensive sports facilities and coaching all over the UK with a real shift in sports culture so that many many more people are out there every day doing sports

I was watching an Indian news channel the other day, India Today's AT News.

They were discussing the Indian Olympic effort.
I understand that Tarlochan Singh is the President/vice-President of the Indian Olympic Association

AND
his son is the Team Doctor, despite the fact he is a Radiologist and not a Sports injury specialist.

How is this sort of thing allowed?

Officials Party As Athletes Struggle

Atal Bihari Vajpayee as Prime Minister of India almost personified his own brand of coolness. And I can reveal that the brief presence of our current Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Vijay Goel, in the Prime Minister’s Office got his goat.
He had plaintively demanded why Goel deserved to be in the PMO. It led to Goel being banished.

Well, as we all know, Goel’s popped up again. This time at the Rio Olympics, and ran riot. Getting India officially reprimanded, forcing exhausted athletes to click selfies with him and merrily getting names of athletes wrong – repeatedly on Twitter.

For company, Raninder has Abhay Singh Chautala, son of former Haryana Chief Minister, OP Chautala. Chautala Jr is also partying in Rio, while out on bail in a disproportionate assets case. His presence in Rio has foxed even the judge, as he didn’t bother to take the mandatory permission required to travel abroad.

First, Dipa Karmakar’s physiotherapist was not able to travel with her. And was only rushed to Rio after she made the finals, contrary to what Goel has claimed publicly.

Second, India’s chief medical officer at the Olympics, is a radiologist called Pawandeep Tony Singh. He knows nothing about sports medicine. When athletes went to him, his solution for all pains was Combiflam. That he was having a gala time at the Games has been reported by all athletes I’ve spoken with – hanging out by the pool, drinking from 3 pm.

Ask Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra about what’s happening on ground at Rio, and he says, “The only athletes who get supported in India by the establishment are the ones who’ve made it to the Everest level. The ones at the grassroot are left to fend for themselves. It’s only after you win, that you get any government attention. This sort of system and planning cannot produce champions”.

Solution is to kick out the government. The top companies (TATA, Bajaj, Reliance, etc) should fund the athletes at grassroots level (5-15 years old)

get the government out of the loop - works in the US and UK cases, both have built a formidable sports-industrial-complex/war machine using private funding (or at least the public's money obtained outside taxation)

athletes get financial support to live, they get access to excellent facilities, coaches, sports medicine, and increasingly data analytics

there is even the case this year of the female cyclists being advised not to wax their bikini line to prevent saddle sores... the result of extensive data crunching apparently! even the british press are calling it a soviet style central planning machine! every single - and i mean every single member of the UK cycling team has won a medal... thats scary

Congratulations to PV SINDHU for her historical performance, winning the silver, playing outstandingly. God bless her and Sakshi Malik. Our girls have made us proud.

I was listening to the commentary on AIR, which was halted in the crucial third game at 10 all, because of news and ads! Imagine this lack of sensitivity, even though the Information Minister is a former Olympic medallist. How can we develop a sports culture?!

A couple of points.

Here us the British experience: Rio Olympics 2016: How did Team GB make history?

In the very early stages I used to be involved with the Olympic Development Program (ODP), in the US. It is a national feeder system with a 12 year cycle. Used to be for girls. Plenty of politics, nakra, noise, etc. But it worked. So, they are currently training girls in the 10ish range to play in the world cup in the year 2027.

I would hope that the new cities that are being proposed, in India, would include a robust sports component right from the start. Perhaps one city in each State concentrate on a particular sport? And set up a feeder system to route the best to these centers of excellence?

What India needs is a change in its culture. At the moment funds will not help the situation ad much.

Will any ministers or officials lose their jobs over this type of organization? The government has to perform as well.

Kicking out the government is no solution in the Olympics unless the games are modified to allow private participation.

I could have died in Rio, says marathon runner Jaisha
There was no water for us, neither recovery drinks nor food. Only once in 8kms did we get water (from the Rio organisers) which did not help at all. All the countries had their stalls at every 2kms but our country's stall was empty

1 - Trim the fat and get rid of some ministers. It has definitely become just another way for well connected people to go on free trips.

2 - Accept that Indians are fairly uninterested athletically. In other cultures it is normal for serious and competitive athletics to be an important aspect of school starting from ages 12-14, with a chance for performing as an amateur at the university or higher level with big rewards. Until there's a cultural interest in developing physically, which will probably eventually happen, you can't manufacture greatness out of thin air with government spending. A few million kids in the US would be sprinting and hurdling since they were 12, so that diamond in the rough who will get you one of the three medals is easier to spot.

3- Support the competitive athletes and don't put overwhelming pressure on them. There are only three medals.

India is beating Azerbaijan Team 1 in the 5round: http://chess-results.com/tnr232875.aspx ... =30&wi=821

India has scored an unbeatable 2.5 out of 3 games. India is winning the 4th board as well. Worst case outcome would be 2.5 to 1.5, and best case 3.5 out 4. It is more likely to be 3.5 or a 3.

India will climb up in the standings after round 5. Azerbaijan Team 1 were 4th seeded and India 9th seeded. Good show so far.

Strong performance indeed from our men's team at the Chess Olympiad . We beat both the Azeri teams plus Anish Giri-led Netherlands . Next up is the 2nd placed US team. We're doing well mainly due to strong board 2 and 3 performances. The men are doing vastly better than I expected, while the women seem to be doing worse than their seeding so far.

Hmmm looks like the very narrow defeat to ukraine has dented bronze prospects. US and Ukraine are not catch able and should win their matches tomorrow. Can't see Russia loosing to Italy, which means 4th place is the best team India can do this time. But not a bad effort to draw Russia with Hari taking out Karjakin.
Womens team not very consistent. Loosing to the likes of Azebeijan and managing to draw Ukraine. Final match against US lets see if they can pull of a surprise.

:-? Indian men finish 4th and women finish fifth. Not a bad performance by any standards but seems like missed opportunity by both.

Indian men not being able to hold Ukraine cost them bronze while women lost to 16th seed azeris. Could have won bronze in both if had been a little consistent.

Hold Ukraine ? I think we lost out momentum in the round before that, losing badly to the US team filled with imports. Just two points from those two rounds combined, where we could have picked up at least another 1.5pts . Before the round against US we were in the lead.

The mens team performed well though - three nobodies, no Anand or Sasikiran. No Humpy on the women's side.

The loss to US imported team was inevitable. 3 in top 10 against just Hari who is no 11 currently !! Against norway today again a blunder by board 4 but then again result would only have been clear 4th position vs 4th on TB.
Womens team really missed Humpy and Tania is not consistent.

I saw some clips from the kabaddi world cup and was dumbfounded - the packaging and vibe was so modern, that it looked nothing like what I expected. Here's more about it:
The improbable rise of kabaddi
How did this indigenous sport become a prime time sensation?
Chaturvedi wants to lose the ‘rural’ tag kabaddi is branded with.

“We have called it a rural sport and neglected it,” he says. “It is India’s game, and unlike something like Australian Rules football and American football, which are also niche sports, there wasn’t enough pride in playing kabaddi. It used to be a big game but then there was no money in it. Which meant not many people took to it. But tell me any sport which has so many high points in such a short time. In kabaddi, there is action every 20 seconds.”

The explosiveness of kabaddi is what makes it so television friendly. While the TV avenue was largely unexplored earlier, Charu Sharma, a TV sports commentator and the director of Mashal Sports , the company that ideated the Pro Kabaddi League, first spotted the game’s potential during the 2006 Asian Games in Doha. It took time for the League to actually take form, but once Pro Kabaddi hit the TV screens in 2014, it became an immediate phenomenon.

“Kabaddi is naturally compatible for television,” says Sharma. “Firstly, it is played indoors, in a controlled environment. The playing field is compact, which means the cameras don’t miss much. It is a robust sport and the players are athletic specimens. It is gripping action, and TV is a slave to that.

“There are some sports, for example hockey, which are great to watch on the field. But they are somehow too fast for television.”

Kabaddi still needed a few clever tweaks to make it even more viewer-friendly.

In co-ordination with the IKF, the 30-second rule (where no raid can exceed 30 seconds), the do-or-die raid (every third empty raid) and the super tackle (an extra point when three or less defenders make a successful tackle) were introduced. “There were times when even kabaddi got too fast for TV,” says Sharma. “We had to make the players who were eliminated take the long way round to go to the bench so we could use those seconds to show replays in slow motion!”

Once Star Sports came on board, in 2013, they decided on the look and feel of the game on TV and in-stadia. They dragged the game from dusty ad-hoc playing fields to blindingly neon-lit stadiums with thumping music, building the atmosphere further with aggressive media and marketing.

A lost opportunity gives motivation to find new paths. In this case Star Sports lost to Sony TV after fierce bidding, the rights to broadcast IPL. IPL being the ad revenue generator was a big loss for Star Sports in the just born & upcoming Sports Broadcasting arena in India. Losing the rights to the league for India's favourite sport's league meant Star Sports was left far behind Sony which was not even a direct competition back then in Sports Broadcasting (Sony Six started after IPL). Star Sports didn't have anything else to show except for highlights of old cricket matches like World Cups, Natwest Trophy etc. Forced into a corner for revenue generation, the Broadcaster starting looking at other sports to have their own leagues, out of which Kabaddi League came out to be. Sony also started with their own Kabaddi league but here Star Sports with better Sport Event Management & experience gave a better & more successful league than Sony. This gave a big boost to Kabaddi viewership & interest in the sport. I remember last Kabaddi World Cup held by Govt. of Punjab & comparing it to this year's event, the difference is mammoth. Heve a look:

Image
Kabaddi World Cup 2014. India vs Australia.

Image
Kabaddi World Cup 2016. India vs Argentina.

Kabaddi is just one of the sports. Star Sports has started Indian Super League for football (which is now world's 4th largest league in terms of average stadium attendance), Hockey league, Badminton League. Finally some good choices for people, who are not big fans of cricket to watch some other sports with relevance to India. If it were Star Sports which got the contract to broadcast IPL on TV, who knows if all these leagues would've started or with same vigour & intensity.

India beat Pakistan 3-2 to win Asian Champions Trophy 2016 title
India's hockey team gifted the country on Diwali its second Asian Champions Trophy hockey tournament title after defeating arch-rivals Pakistan 3-2 in the final at the Wisma Belia Hockey Stadium on Sunday.

India's two second-half goals from Rupinder Pal Singh (18th minute) and Affan Yousuf (23rd) were cancelled out by Aleem Bilal (26th) and Ali Shan (38th) but Nikkin Thimmaiah (51st) scored the winner for the reigning Asian Games champions.

Congrats to the women's hockey team for winning the Asian Champions Trophy , a week after the men won theirs . First time any Asian country holds both men's and women's titles . They finished the group stage in second place after losing their only match to the top ranked Chinese 2-3 , whom they beat 2-1 in the final , with the winning goal coming 20 seconds before the whistle .

Did you know that India has a national ice hockey team.

They play in Leh, Ladakh at 14000 ft above sea level.

Only a few people around the world know this. Its almost a well kept secret.

Western players from Canada and Europe travel all the way to this site to play ice hockey against the Indian team.

Roelant Oltmans is doing a good job. He's only contracted as the coach of the senior team, but he's actively tracking the juniors at this WC too, so he knows the best options to feed into the senior team. He's seen in the video cheering and working with the junior head coach. Sign of a man who cares about his craft and achieving success in the long term, and not just about making some money.
