At least 35 people have been killed in a suicide car bomb attack in a busy square in Iraq's capital, Baghdad, security and medical sources say.
Sixty-one other people were injured by the blast in the predominantly Shia Muslim eastern district of Sadr City.
Another car bomb later exploded in the car park of the nearby Al-Kindi hospital, killing three people.
The jihadist group Islamic State said it carried out both attacks, targeting a "gathering of Shia" in the first.

they probably need to disregard NAto dictates and end the mosul circus quickly. this will free up units to patrol and clean other areas rather than everyone camped around mosul only. iraqi security esp CT units has been denuded for the mosul campaign and IS/AQ have duly taken advantage using sleeper cells, uncleared desert areas and weapon caches.

A fragile truce:
Rebels in Syria halt talks over peace negotiations
Syrian rebel groups said on Monday they had decided to freeze any talks about their possible participation in peace negotiations being prepared by Moscow in Kazakhstan unless the Syrian government and its Iran-backed allies end what they said were violations of a ceasefire.
In a statement, the rebel groups also said that any territorial advances by the army and Iran-backed militias that are fighting alongside it would end the fragile ceasefire brokered by Russia and Turkey, which back opposing sides, that came into effect on Friday.
"The regime and its allies have continued firing and committed many and large violations," said the statement signed by the mainly moderate rebel groups operating under the umbrella of the so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA).

http://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-mideas ... KKBN14K08XWestern officials from a coalition providing air support, training and advice to the Iraqi military have hailed the recovery of the army and police, which dropped their weapons and fled Islamic State's blitz across a third of the country in 2014 despite billions of dollars in U.S. support.
"They don't have to be as good as us, they just have to be better than Daesh," one U.S. military official told Reuters earlier this year, using an Arabic acronym for Islamic State.
That marginal advantage, though, means the Mosul campaign is likely to drag on for many months and could wreak significant destruction.

Vice President Nouri Maliki said that volunteer forces fighting against ISIL Takfiris in Iraq can help in combating the terrorist group in Syria after defeating it in Iraq.
In a press conference in Tehran on Monday, Maliki said Hashd al-Shaabi, the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), may provide their help in Syria after cleansing Iraq from the Takfiri insurgents.
“If we can be successful against Daesh and liberate our soil, we can go into Syria if our brothers there need help against Daesh,” Maliki said, using the Arabic acronym of ISIL.
Meanwhile, the former Iraqi PM rejected possibilities of a Mosul division after defeating ISIL.
“The city is home to diverse ethnic and religious groups, including no less important Kurdish elements as well. There is real concerns on the prospects of the city after defeat of ISIL and many countries see the city as an option for their expansionist policies. Currently, the active political forces in Iraq are working to fashion a sort of political unity for the city,” Maliki told journalists as quoted by Anadolu news agency.
Before visiting Tehran, Maliki emphasized that Iraqi security forces along with fighters from Popular Mobilization Units and Kurdish Peshmerga are resolute to put an end to ISIL’s presence in Mosul and eventually eliminate the terrorists from the Iraqi soil.
Iraqi army soldiers, supported by pro-government Popular Mobilization Units (commonly known by the Arabic name Hashd al-Sha’abi) and Kurdish Peshmerga, launched a joint operation on October 17 to retake Mosul from Daesh terrorists.
The Iraqi forces’ advance has, however, been slowed down due to the presence of hundreds of thousands of civilians, many of whom are prevented from leaving Mosul by ISIL terrorists.

Re: Levant crisis - III
The Iraqi's have made such statements even before the Mosul operation started and for a time I was hopeful. But Mosul seems to be turning into a meat grinder and the PMF may not have any strength left after it is taken to do a hot pursuit into Syria. Unless it is only the Iraqi army that is suffering most of the casualties in Mosul and the PMF is merely playing a supporting role and conserving its strength.Singha wrote:Al mannar lebanon

BEIRUT, LEBANON (3:10 P.M.) - The Russian Air Force launched several airstrikes over the eastern countryside of Aleppo on Tuesday, targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham's (ISIS) defenses near the key city of Al-Bab.
According to a military source in Aleppo City, the Russian Air Force carried out a large number of airstrikes over Al-Bab today, hitting several Islamic State targets near the Al-Farouq Hospital and Jabal Aqil.
These Russian airstrikes on Tuesday provided the Turkish Army necessary air cover while they were advancing on the Islamic State's positions in western Al-Bab.
The Russian Air Force will continue providing air cover to the Turkish Army, as long as they attack terrorist groups operating inside of Syria.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (2:35 P.M.) - A large force comprised of mostly Syrian Arab Army (SAA) soldiers arrived in the southern countryside of Aleppo this morning after a long deployment inside the eastern neighborhoods of the provincial capital.
These soldiers from the Syrian Arab Army's Republican Guard are expected to take part in the upcoming southern Aleppo offensive that will include allied forces from Hezbollah, Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary).
What sets southern Aleppo apart from the northern countryside is its large presence of jihadist rebels that are not included in the nationwide ceasefire deal setup by the Russian and Turkish governments.
The entire Aleppo-Idlib border is filled with jihadist rebels from Jabhat Fateh Al-Sham (formerly Al-Nusra Front), making this operation permissible for the Syrian Arab Army and their allies.
The primary target for the Syrian Arab Army during this offensive will be the villages located along the Aleppo-Damascus Highway (M-5 Highway).
If they are successful, the Syrian Arab Army will be able to make their first major push into the Idlib Governorate since their expulsion from the provincial capital in late April 2015.

since there is no element of deception or tactical surprise here, a crushing amt of artillery has to be arranged to ease the way to M5 highway.
a day of wrath, a rolling wall of fire, a balrog party....
there is not much point in urban fighting over every village and hill. it is 40km to Idlib from SAA lines.
this offensive is however going to leave the fate of fuah and kafraya in precarious state.....they might get massacred even if the opposite rebel enclaves in ghouta face same risk from the iranians camped outside - UN and MSM pressure will be brought to bear to uphold human rights and overlook this atrocity if the JFS does it....."we are better than them". afaik one rebel enclave has no civilians and some 150 fighters, the other one has civilians too and 100s of rebels.
we have already seen what happened in the evac of 1500 old, sick and wounded ... nubl hezbollah had to apply boot to neck of jihadis to get even that slight co-operation .... there should have been a 1:1 for deal in east aleppo - 50k people incl jihadis left and fuah+kafraya has 40k survivors , throw in the rebel enclaves in ghouta also if they wanted to leave - another headache gone.
