Seems Carter expectation and by that Pentagon expectation is Russia should gently remove Assad and bring the moderate opposition into Syrian government and if they are not doing that their fight against ISIL would amount to virtually zero.

Looks like Carter like John Mcain is a mentally unstable character.......Good to know that there exist people beyond Mcain who hold high office in US

Canadian doctors who have honed their skills from the battlefields of Afghanistan to the killing fields of Iraq, are now using them to save the lives US, coalition soldiers & ISIS :

“We treat anybody who comes through the front door,” said Lt.-Col Richard Morin, a physician who oversees Canada’s Role 2 Hospital at Erbil Airport, 80 kilometres east of the front lines at Mosul.

“That means all coalition forces, Iraqi security forces, civilians, and Daesh,” he said, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. “Some enemy combatants have come through.”

Nice rudaali article in New York Times.

Americans have got their chhaddhis in a twist. The neo-cons are worried over Russia and Turkey getting closer and America being shut out in middle east.
They would rather commit all foreign policy blunders themselves rather than have anyone else take a shot at them.

Satellite Images of Russian Nuclear-Capable Missiles in Syria Revealed As Kremlin Claims Military Drawdown
An Israeli-owned firm that builds all of the longtime U.S. ally’s spy satellites unveiled high-resolution images showing the deployment of Russian nuclear-capable ballistic missiles in Syria on Thursday. The images surfaced shortly before the Kremlin claimed it began reducing its military presence in Syria.Reuters notes that “Russia has previously failed to deliver on promises to pull back its forces from Syria, adding, “Moscow announced a reduction of its military deployment in the country in March last year, but continued supply runs by land and air before sending significant reinforcements in October.”In remarks reportedly aired on Russian state television Friday, Gen. Ayoub emphasized the importance of Russian military support to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in “the war on terrorism and the need to develop military cooperation” with Russia even after “the victory over terrorism.”The following day, images captured late last year by an Israeli satellite revealed the deployment of two missile launching vehicles and six nuclear-capable “missile elements” hidden under camouflage nets in and around Russia’s Hmeymim airbase near Latakia in northwestern Syria, reports Defense News, adding that the revelation affirms what Russia hawks and intelligence analysts have known since March 2016.Defense News notes that the Israeli-built Eros B satellite captured the images of “two Iskander-launching vehicles, each capable of deploying two of the 500-kilometer-range surface-to-surface missiles known to NATO as SS-26” in Russia’s Hmeymim airbase on December 28.On an unspecified day in late November, the satellite reportedly captured other images showing “six different ‘missile elements’ under camouflage nets.”

ImageSat International (iSi), a subsidiary of Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the state-owned firm that builds all of the Middle Eastern country’s spy satellites, published the images on Thursday. The head of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, on Friday announced that the Kremlin has begun to draw down its military troops fighting in Syria since September 2015, reports Reuters, noting that the reduction is the result of a fragile ceasefire deal reached between opposition groups and the Syrian government.“In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, the Russian Defence Ministry is beginning to reduce its armed forces deployment in Syria,” declared Gerasimov. “I want to congratulate the entire crew of the naval aircraft carrier group on the successful completion of their assigned tasks.”The revelation of the deployment of nuclear-capable Russian missiles by the Israeli satellite and firm comes as the Republican-led U.S. House of Representatives affirmed America’s historic support of its ally Israel by overwhelmingly voting in favor of rebuking the United Nations for passing a resolution with the help of President Barack Obama denouncing Israeli settlements.

Russian Air Power Prevails over Syria

http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/ ... over-syria
Russia has now flown more combat air sorties over Syria than the U.S.-led Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) has flown over Syria and Iraq combined. The weight of Russian airpower has enabled the Assad regime to regain significant territory from Syrian opposition forces, including the second city of Aleppo. But the situation on the ground remains complicated, with Damascus opposing a Turkish-led offensive against Islamic State (ISIS or Daesh) that is being quietly supported by Russia.

On December 22, Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu said that the Russian Aviation and Space Force (VKS) performed approximately 8,800 combat sorties for 71,000 air strikes, killed 35,000 gunmen and destroyed 1,500 vehicles and artillery pieces. Captured items included 488 tanks and armored vehicles, 475 rocket launchers and 410 mortars. Since the expedition group went in action in October 2015, it destroyed 725 terrorist training camps and 405 industrial facilities manufacturing explosives and munitions. Interestingly, VKS first deputy commander Lt. Gen. Pavel Kurachenko said that the total of combat sorties numbered more than 30,000. The difference might be explained by Kurachenko having included helicopter flights, which are often not counted by the defense ministry.

In December, the Pentagon said that about 16,500 combat sorties had been flown during OIR, about two thirds in Iraq and the remainder in Syria.

For public image reasons, VKS has not flown combat missions over Aleppo since October 2016, leaving the job of conducting air strikes on rebel positions in the city completely to the Syrian air force. Despite significant combat losses in 2016—including four MiG-21s, eight MiG-23BN/MLs, two Su-22M4s and two L-39s (as well as some helicopters)—the Syrian air force remains active with more than 100 serviceable jets. The Syrian platform of choice has been the Su-22M4 swing-wing strike fighter. Against heavily fortified positions and high-value targets in Aleppo, Syrian Su-22M4s have sometimes used 1,102-pound ODAB-500 vacuum bombs.

Another type in the Syrian inventory that is capable of precision strikes is the Su-24M, although combat attrition has halved the total to fewer than 10 operational examples. The type was employed in August 2016 on long-range missions to Hasakah to drop bombs on the Kurdish fighters when they clashed with the government forces for control of the city center. The type went into action again in December, when its home base—the T-4 (Al-Tias) aerodrome—came under attack from Islamic State forces after they captured Palmyra.

Most Syrian air force attacks last year were executed by MiG-23MF/ML and MiG-21 interceptors using free-fall bombs and unguided rockets. Since these types lack sighting systems, the accuracy has depended entirely on piloting skills. The active MiG-23 fleet is estimated at between 80 and 90, of which only a few are the dedicated “BN” strike version. A handful of Syria’s surviving L-39ZO/ZA twin-seat trainers are also operating as strike aircraft. One such jet was shot down over Aleppo in December, and two more were hit by anti-tank missiles at Deir Ez Zoir airfield by besieging Islamic State forces in January. Recentlyoverhauled airframes have been outfitted with B-8 pods for 80-mm unguided rockets, which greatly enhanced their fire power.

In the last days of 2016 the VKS bombed Islamic State targets in support of the Turkish-led offensive Euphrates Shield, which commenced in August 2016 and involves rebel groups from so-called Free Syrian Army (FSA). In early 2017, the Turkish air force and the Russians expanded their cooperation to coordinated air strikes in the vicinity of Al-Bab town in the northern part of Aleppo province.

Damascus does not support the Euphrates Shield operation, and sometimes even strikes FSA and other rebel groups when they clash or exchange artillery fire with the Syrian government troops on positions to the west and south of Al-Bab. Following the expulsion of the armed opposition from the easternpart of Aleppo city, the Syrian air force moved focus onto rebel enclaves south of Damascus and southwest provinces. For its part, the Russian air power has become more active around the ancient city of Palmyra, whichwas re-captured by Islamic State forces in December.

Following its defeat in the east of Aleppo and the western outskirts of the city in a series of decisive battles of the second half of 2016, the Syrian opposition has agreed a ceasefire in Aleppo and Idlib provinces with Damascus. This truce has largely held, enabling Moscow and Ankara to proceed with plans to arrange a lasting peace and, at the same time, increase pressure on Islamic State. But a Russian defense ministry complaint last October that “cooperation between Russia and the U.S. in the fight against al-Nusra and Daesh has not started yet,” remains valid today.

As part of a broader peace deal, Moscow has announced a reduction in its expeditionary force. The naval task force deployed off the coast of Latakia is being withdrawn. Capital ships, including the Russian navy's only carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, are expected to arrive back at Severomorsk by February. According to the chief of staff of the Russian Armed Forces Gen. Valery Gerasimov, in the course of two months Russian naval aircraft performed 420 flights and destroyed 1,252 targets.

Apart from airstrikes, Russian and Syrian air forces are using Il-76 airlifters to drop supplies to the city of Deir Ez-Zoir, besieged by Islamic State. The Iranian air force has also performed airdrops over Syria, to the rebel-besieged Shia enclaves in Idlib province using C-130Hs and occasionally Il-76s. Iranian An-74 STOL airlifters were sighted recently at Aleppo Airport, which has re-opened.

this translated SOHR report confirms the ISIS is deploying in force for a final attack on Deir azzor and also reinforcing the syrian border Al-bukamal and Al-Qaim in iraqi side against the iraqi army + hashd tribes advancing from Anas and Haditha side. SAA had better reinforce and prepare in depth for a hellacious attack on deir azzor.

------
Although the arrival of Turkish reinforcements to al-Bab and the “Euphrates Wrath” to the outskirts of Euphrates Dam… the “Islamic State” pulls more than 150 of its members towards the “Euphrates State”
08/01/2017

The activists of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights Monitored the “Islamic State” pulls tens of its fighters and field commanders of the fronts in the countryside of Al-Raqqah, and sends them to fight on other fronts, and in the details monitored by the activists of the Syrian Observatory and obtained from several reliable sources; the “Islamic state” organization pulled more than 150 members, mostly young men, from the fronts of Al-Raqqah countryside, where they were seen riding about 20 cars and vehicle coming from the fight fronts during the past 48 hours and they entered Al-Raqqah city, then they were headed to the east of Syria, and several reliable sources confirmed to the Observatory that the fighters headed towards “Euphrates State” which includes the Syrian Bokamal area and the Iraqi Qa’im area.
It is noteworthy that several fronts of the “Islamic State” organization in Syria are witnessing the outbreak of violent clashes and preparations for big military operations in them, where the “Islamic State” mobilizes its forces, members and its machines and bringing in military reinforcements of materiel and ammunition and more members in Deir Ezzor city and the western countryside adjacent to the city, several reliable sources suggested to the Syrian Observatory that the “Islamic State” is preparing for military action and an attack on Brigade 137 and al-Bogeleyyah areas at the northwestern outskirts of Deir Ezzor city, in addition to rallies in the areas of al-Senaúh and Hawijat Sakr by the organization, where it is believed that the organization is preparing for simultaneous attack on the areas of Harabesh Deir Ezzor airbase and regime forces’ controlled areas inside the city Deir Ezzor, which are besieged by the “Islamic State” since the beginning of 2015.
Also the northern, western and northwestern countryside of Al-Raqqah are witnessing violent clashes between the organization against the Syria Democratic Forces backed by warplanes of the international coalition, where Syria Democratic Forces are now about 4 km away from the strategic Dam of Euphrates, located in the northern countryside of al-Tabaqa west of Al-Raqqah, in addition to the large military reinforcements which were brought by the Turkish forces of soldiers, weapons and ammunition, along with bringing in reinforcements of the rebel and Islamic factions fighters of the “Euphrates Shield” operation, in preparation more than ever before to start the operation of controlling al-Bab city, one of the major remaining cities under the control of the “Islamic State” in the countryside of Aleppo.
The withdrawal of these fighters of Al-Raqqah fronts came after almost a month of documenting by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights for sending more than 500 members of the “Islamic State” by the leadership of the organization, including field commanders arrived from Iraq to “Al-Raqqah State” which is the stronghold the “Islamic State” in Syria, the fighters are Syrians, Iraqis, Arabs and foreigners, and about 200 of them were sent to fronts of al-Bab city and its surroundings, where its surroundings are witnessing today violent clashes between members of the organization against the rebel and Islamic Factions of the “Euphrates Shield” operation supported by the Turkish forces and warplanes, while more than 300 fighters were sent to the fronts of Palmyra and the eastern countryside of Homs.
Also reliable sources confirmed to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights that the fighters were sent after a meeting between the commander of the “Jaysh al-Sham” with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader the “Islamic State” and the Minister of War in the organization, where both of them confirmed to the commander of Jaysh al-Sham that the reinforcements would be continuous and successive from now on, after the last mentioned explained the bad military situation of the fighters and members of the organization on the fronts, where they fight against “Euphrates Shield”, the Syria Democratic Forces and the regime forces and militiamen loyal to them fighting.

Broad-based advances suggest that IS resistance is "showing signs of collapse" in east Mosul, as suggested by Brett McGurk, the senior US official in the counter-IS coalition, in a tweet on 8 January.
One causal factor was clearly the concentration of all available ISF forces in east Mosul, achieved by closing down ancillary assaults north and south-west of the city.
During a two-week hiatus the 2nd Emergency Response Brigade and 5th Federal Police division troops were shifted from areas south-west of Mosul to new positions east of the Tigris.
Map of control
These forces re-energised the ISF thrust towards Beladiyat and the bridges inside the city when the offensive was restarted on 29 December.
Another accelerant was the coalition's role in reconfiguring the Iraqi battle plan, fostering greater co-ordination between Iraqi headquarters and providing more powerful artillery and air strikes.
The latter boost in firepower required US howitzers to be deployed at the eastern edges of Mosul city.
Over 400 coalition special forces were inserted into the urban battle as advisers and strike co-ordinators, often well within the range of IS attacks.
This suggests that east Mosul may be cleared in January 2017 or early February, whilst the clearance of west Mosul may stretch well into the second quarter of 2017.

al masdar. with hopes of victory gone, and trump rule immiment, the goals of ISIS/Nusra are all aligned in causing as much damage as possible before going down.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (4:30 P.M.) - The Syrian Arab Army's High Command was in the process of planning their Palmyra offensive when the so-called "Islamic State" destroyed the single most important source of gas to millions of Syrians on Sunday.

The destruction of the Hayyan Gas Company factory has forced the Syrian Arab Army's High Command to speed up the planning of this Palmyra, a military source told Al-Masdar News on Monday afternoon.

It was initially believed that the Palmyra offensive would not begin until February or even March; however, the humanitarian crisis caused by the Islamic State's inhuman actions has forced the Syrian Arab Army's High Command to accelerate the timing of this assault.

With all of the imperative gas fields in eastern Homs under the Islamic State's control, the Syrian government no longer has the reserves to provide millions of civilians in Damascus, Homs, and Hama much needed gas during these frigid Winter months.

Moscow: The Russian Defence Ministry on Tuesday claimed that at least 20 civilians were killed in a B-52 bomber strike carried out by the US on the Idlib province in Syria on January 3.
"As we remember, on September 29 last year, the US aviation carried out an attack in the Deir-ez-Zor targeting government forces. After this attack, the Islamic State started its advance," Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov said during a Defence Ministry meeting, as cited by RIA Novosti news agency.
"The latest example of this is the January 3 airstrike, when a B-52 bomber -- without warning the Russian side -- hit a target in the town of Sarmada, Idlib Province, which is covered by the cessation of hostilities agreement. Over 20 civilians died as a result of the airstrike."

#Iraq's Air Force is wiping out Da'ish's VBIED/IED capabilities before ground forces storm western #Mosul and Tal 'Afar. Lessons learnt.

battle for hawija is also looming - a salafi stronghold and very anti-Govt

army also probing west toward Al-Qaim from staging areas near haditha dam

so 4 major fronts mosul, tal afar, al-qaim and hawija are pending - this will extinguish the caliphate in iraq

Libyan National Army Commander Marshal Khalifa Belqasim Haftar on Wednesday visited the ‘Admiral Kuznetsov’ aircraft carrier, RIA Novosti reports, citing the Russian Defense Ministry. During a video conference, Haftar discussed with Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu the fight against international terrorist groups in the Middle East. Haftar is aligned with Libya’s eastern parliament and government. He has been fighting a two-year military campaign with his Libyan National Army against Islamists and other opponents in Benghazi and elsewhere in the east, Reuters said.
