Nato is with the "official" govt in tripoli...the gang of islamists who were the foot soldiers of qadhafis removal.

I stand corrected per a 2016 dailymail UK report UAE has a base to help him from the air ::
===
Haftar and Tobruk have received backing from neighbouring Egypt as well as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Fellow Gulf state Qatar backs Tripoli.

Islamic State has taken advantage of the chaos to set up a foothold in parts of the country. -> ie Sirte region

===
no idea why KSA+UAE and Qatar are split over who to support. all of them are in same camp over Syria.

two large tribes Tebu(Toubou) and Tuareg run the show in the sahara - these are ancient peoples whose warlike exploits and running the trans-sahara slave & trade routes were well known in middle ages too. and in the west atlas mountains I guess the Berbers rule the roost. all are heavily armed and want no central authority sitting in comfy cities ordering them around.

Al masdar

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:25 A.M.) - The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) had a rough night in east Aleppo, thanks in large-part to the Syrian Arab Army's rocket battalion.

ISIS was attempting to reinforce the Al-Bab countryside from their positions in the Deir Hafer Plains, when the Syrian Arab Army's rocket battalion caught the terrorist convoy heading through the village of Umm Al-Mari, south of Deir Hafer city.

According to a military source in east Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Army's rocket battalion scored a direct hit on 5 vehicles carrying Islamic State reinforcements, killing and wounding a large number of these militants.

Umm Al-Mari, which is located approximately 3km from the Syrian Army's positions is located along an alternative supply road to the Islamic State's front-lines in the Al-Bab Plateau.

in other news a russian bomber put down a 6 storey building in Idlib, killing some 25 turkestani jihadis....so it looks like idlib has been declared a free fire zone for the russo-usa combine with no turkish objections. usa drones are waging daily strikes there on the roads.

For those interested, an obit on Ayatollah Rafsanjani... not heard much of, of late, but a very very important guy in Iran for three decades. His passing will have an impact on the Levant, in subtle, long-term ways. A slightly less efficient policy flow is likely in the short to medium term.

Saudi Arabia does not support Muslim Brotherhood but Qatar does. The Saudi royal line is a target for the islamists (like Osama) so they have decided not to support `muslim ummah`. But they support sunni islamists to counter shia Iran elsewhere(strategic imperative).

If the United States wants to invite Kurds to the upcoming Syrian peace talks it might as well invite the Islamic State jihadist group too, said Turkey's foreign minister Saturday whose country views Kurdish fighters in Syria as extremists.
A US Central Command tweet insisting its Kurdish allies were not linked to outlawed militants whipped up a storm Thursday, with Ankara asking if Washington had "lost its senses".

In other news
Massive attack by IS in Deir aur Zor

Dozens of people have lost their lives when Daesh Takfiri terrorists launched a fresh offensive on the eastern Syrian city of Dayr al-Zawr, the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says.

The Britain-based monitoring group said at least six large explosions shook the city, located 450 kilometers northeast of the capital, Damascus, on Saturday as the extremists and government forces engaged in fierce fighting with each other.

The multi-pronged Daesh attack started from Baghaliyeh neighborhood near the northwestern flank of the city.

Palmyra

Over 10 000 SAA soldiers are going to mount offensive to free Palmyra and restore gas supply to Damascus. (This is a diversionary chaal: real chadm yudh will happen some where else, that is why SAA has been engaged in Pamyra).

Russia cements military position in Syria with upgrades to naval and air bases

Shelling continues in rebel-controlled areas near Damascus, despite a fragile ceasefire
Russian President Vladimir Putin greets his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad upon his arrival for a meeting at the Kremlin in Moscow Getty

Russia plans to improve and expand its naval and air bases in Syria, the Interfax news agency reported on Sunday, citing an unnamed source, as Moscow cements its presence in the Middle Eastern country, its only overseas military deployment.

The source told Interfax that Russia will start repairing a second runway at Hmeimin air base near Latakia, while the Tartus naval base will be upgraded in order to handle bigger ships such as cruisers.

President Vladimir Putin has announced a partial withdrawal of Russian forces from Syria, where they have been helping forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. But Moscow wants to retain a permanent presence both in Hmeimin and Tartus.

The source also told Interfax that Russia will still deploy S-300 surface-to-air defence systems and Bastion coastal missile launchers in Tartus.

Russia sends 12 more warplanes to Syria despite announcing withdrawal

Violence continued in the water-rich Wadi Barada valley on Sunday despite a fragile ceasefire, with opposition activists saying government shelling struck a village in a rebel-controlled area near Damascus.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said shelling in Deir Qanoun village killed at least seven and injured more than 20, with some in a serious condition. The activist-operated Wadi Barada Media Center put the toll at 12.

Fighting has raged in the valley that provides the Syrian capital with most of its water supply, restricting the flow since 22 December, despite talks to stem the violence.

The Lebanese Hezbollah group, which has fighters on the side of the Syrian government, said pro-government troops seized a hill overlooking the water source in the valley.

US/West struggling to take Mosul and replicate the Russian-led alliance in Aleppo!
US Generals Try to Save Face in Mosul After Aleppo Liberation

© AP Photo/ Maya Alleruzzo, File Politics 17:55 14.01.2017

The recapture of Mosul from Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) has become a matter of honor for Pentagon generals following the Russo-Syrian coalition's success in Aleppo. However, despite the optimistic prognoses of the US Secretary of Defense, the liberation of Mosul is likely to drag on for months, retired Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok writes for Gazeta.ru. It appears that during the next phase of the Mosul offensive, the US-led coalition would not only seek to deal a heavy blow to Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) in Iraq but also to restore the reputation of the Pentagon's generals following Russia's success in Aleppo, Gazeta.ru's military expert, retired Colonel Mikhail Khodarenok believes. "Three months ago, when the operation to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists began, the outgoing US Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter said that it could be complete before 2017 begins. However, this has not happened yet and there is still a long way to go before the terrorists are defeated," Khodarenok noted in his recent op-ed. A member of Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) carries a rocket launcher at the University of Mosul during a battle with Daesh militants, in Mosul, Iraq, January 14, 2017 © REUTERS/ Ahmed Saad Iraqi Forces Liberate Campus of University of Mosul From Daesh Terrorists However, this fact has not prevented Carter from giving reporters yet another prognosis: during a January press briefing, the US Secretary of Defense assumed that Mosul could be recaptured from terrorists before Barack Obama leaves office. According to the retired colonel, the liberation of Mosul is meant to become the US' response to the success of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Russian military forces in the Syrian city of Aleppo. "The coalition's major efforts are now focused on the liberation of the eastern part of [Mosul], blocking Daesh's communications from the south and north-west, undermining the terrorist group's command system and reducing their combat capabilities through massive air strikes," the retired general noted. Iraqi Special Operations Forces (ISOF) run with their weapons during clashes with Islamic State militants in frontline near university of Mosul, Iraq,

The US Department of Defense reported Thursday that the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service (ICTS) has already retaken 70 to 80 percent of eastern Mosul. According to Rudaw, on Friday the Iraqi forces managed to liberate two more eastern Mosul districts, Faisaliyah and Nasr, on the eastern edge of the Tigris. Citing Iraqi Joint Command, the media outlet added that the 15th and 16th divisions of the Iraqi Army have also liberated the northern parts of the Hadbaa and Mudaraa districts in northern Mosul. Still, Khodarenok expresses concerns about the challenge posed by Daesh to Iraqi military forces in heavily fortified western Mosul. As of yet, terrorists have managed to resist the offensive, although the US-led coalition forces have provided considerable air and artillery support to Iraq's army. Eader of the Islamic State group, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, delivering a sermon at a mosque in Iraq © AP Photo/ Militant video, File Daesh Leader Baghdadi Sleeping in Suicide Vest - US Coalition Furthermore, despite the fact that the total number of the coalition soldiers is three times that of the jihadists, the street fight in Mosul could drag on for months, especially in the western parts of the city, the military expert warned. Some senior Pentagon officers share a similar stance. "I had a good chuckle when I heard Ash Carter say last week that ISIS' 'days are numbered'. In fact, its months are numbered. This whole idea that the battle will be over by the time that Trump is inaugurated is a fantasy. This is going to go on for a long time," a senior Centcom officer told Mark Perry of Politico.com in mid-December. Iraqi Army soldiers celebrate as they hold a flag of the Islamic State group they captured during a military operation to regain control of a village outside Mosul, Iraq (File) © AP Photo/ Hadi Mizban Iraqi Army soldiers celebrate as they hold a flag of the Islamic State group they captured during a military operation to regain control of a village outside Mosul, Iraq (File) In this photo residents of Mosul and the nearby villages are seen being accomodated in the Hazir refugee camp

Over 144,500 Iraqis Displaced Amid Operation to Liberate Mosul From Daesh Meanwhile, the Iraqi Armed Forces, including the elite "Golden Division," has suffered significant losses on the battle field. It is regarded as the most capable fighting force of the Iraq Army. Citing his source in the Pentagon, Perry emphasized that the battle for Mosul has been so intense that the Golden Division's veteran battalions have lost up to 50 percent of their fighters. "If that rate stays constant, the division could become combat ineffective in a little over a month, and perhaps even sooner," the Centcom officer noted as cited by the journalist. It appears that the terrorist group is well aware of the actual operational capabilities of the coalition forces, Khodarenok suggested. Apparently therefore, Daesh commanders have "easily" ceded the south-eastern part of Mosul and dispatched their forces to Palmyra, Deir ez-Zor and al-Bab in Syria, he noted. To complicate matters further, the Mosul offensive has pushed Iraq to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe, the military expert noted. Since the beginning of the operation last October, more than 144,500 people have been displaced, the United Nations migration agency reported Friday. According to the agency, 144,588 people have been displaced between October 17, 2016 and January 12, 2017. Moreover, between January 5 and 12, some 12,354 Iraqis have been forced to more, the UN official website says.
