I dont think Russia is naive to believe that its talking to Paki Boy will some how stop its terror factory. They want to keep line of communication open with Paki unlike during Soviet mis-adventure in afghanistan where they didnt had any and paid a heavy price.

More than terrorism is the Narcotics thats comes across Af-PAK that is a real issue for CIS/Russian countries and then they get into Europe via that route. But no harm in talking and having a line of communication open ......We keep Talking to Pakistan inspite of all the terror they do to us and even trade with them , US Free Funds them and Arms them lavishly for past 10-15 years plus and talks to them. These were not small amount provided but to the tune of 18 Billion USD according to US Congress, Thats real big money !

State Spononsor of Terrorism from Pakistan is something we will have to deal with as we suffered and are still suffering a lot almost daily from it ,And the only way to deal with it is take back POK atleast and if required break Pakistan. Thats our part of Kashmir that should not be in Pakistan hand in the first place. This is very Fundamental for us to do in defeating Pakistan and its Evil Sponsor of terrorism , Short of this we will keep loosing army and civilians in 100's and 1000's due to terror strike.

As I said before and was quickly dismissed for it, the election of Trump presents an opportunity to turn all this around. I still maintain the Russians don't really want to jump in bed with the Chinese axis (which means dumping India and embracing Pak). 'Realpolitik' be damned; this isn't a video game; we're talking about entire nations comprised of human beings and govts similarly made up of people. Especially in this day and age with the internet making it difficult to control information, the feelings of the people matter.

The US deep state found this out the hard way when they ignored the feelings of the people and assumed they'd happily go along with the 'Realpolitik' of backing muslims and killing their fellow Christian Russians. The people rejected this mostly on civilizational grounds.

For the same reason, I'm convinced the Russians don't really want to jump on bed with China and "the Ummah" vs the West (and India). They could be forced into it out of necessity, but their hearts aren't in it.

If DT & Putin can facilitate a genuine reproachment I've little doubt Russia will put the brakes on moving into the Chinese orbit at India's expense. The ideal scenario is US/Russia/India axis vs China and their vassals (North Korea, Pakistan, some Sunni groups, parts of the GCC maybe). From a civilizational POV this alignment makes the most sense. It also makes the most sense strategically, if you take the long view.

Assuming the deep state / establishment / George Soros / Illuminati types don't reassert control over the US. If that happens we may indeed be f*cked.

^^^" the election of Trump presents an opportunity to turn all this around. I still maintain the Russians don't really want to jump in bed with the Chinese axis (which means dumping India and embracing Pak)."

I tend to agree. Obama cornered the Russians over Ukraine. Victoria Nuland almost single-handedly created the crisis by baiting the bear and urging Ukrainians to 'join Europe'.

The sanctions pushed the Russians into the arms of Chinese. They have deep reservations about China. They would be subordinate financially and eventually technologically. Russians think of themselves as White Europeans and there is an innate Slavic fear of 'Mongol' overlords.

If Trump can figure out a way to ease up on the sanctions without creating an uproar, it's the best way to defuse an alliance that would oppose the US in the Pacific. I think it's what Tillerson has in mind.

DT is an exception to that many in Republican and the entire democratic party due to idelogical reason want to see Russia are prime enemy , They tried to screw russia in many ways Georgia war , Ukraine coup and Sanctions , There were many sanction and restriction even before these events like Magnitsky Act , believing DT is some kind of messiah would be staying in fools paradise.

At best they can have working relations like they had during GWB era even then GWB screwed up by Withdrawing from ABM Treaty that was the corner stone of Strategic Regimes like START

Like I said Institutional wise US Estb hates Russia and see it at perputual enemy because it has the same Nuclear Warhead as US does which means according to US officials own admission they see Russia as existential threat. (along with China for same reason )

Russian long term Strategic Interest is to develop relations with CIS/CSTO/SCO and BRICS nation and develop strategic partnership with India and China plus other Friends SE Asian Nations ( Vietnam , Indonesia etc )

Russia has ZERO chance to develop relationship with US and some EU countries like UK and East Baltic ones like Poland Lithuania.

Some EU countries dont mind the transactional relationship with Russia as they are the largest importer of Russian Gas and Oil these are Germany , Italy and French .....Russia still supplies 33 % of EU Gas and much more of Oil Goes there.

Once Bitten Twice Shy , I just hope Kremlin dumps any hope of restoring relations with US , Investing effort with China , India and other nations even the semi-Hostile Saudi is a much worth effort to try

so Moscow might finally become comfortable with what’s increasingly appearing to be an irreversible geopolitical fact and concentrate more closely instead on preserving the mutually beneficial military-energy aspects of its fading strategic partnership with India while simultaneously exploring ‘compensational’ opportunities with Pakistan.
TECTONIC Stupidity of this analyst !
You missed this gem in the above article.
With Kabulov’s “Islamophiles” more comfortably in control of Russia’s South Asian strategy and the former “deep state” equilibrium with the “Indophiles” suddenly broken, the paranoid Hindutva jingoists at the head of India’s government might fret that any accelerated rapprochement between Moscow and Islamabad will be at New Delhi’s expense
I don't think this swinish propaganda hit-piece merits the level of sound critical analysis you have made in your post.

What we do need to recognize is that the momentum in Russian strategic thinking has swung decisively away from India and in favour of China and Pakistan. (F)articles like this one exist purely for the purpose of justifying this anti-India, pro-China/Pak calculus in ostensibly ethical terms... painting a picture of paranoid "Hindootva" jingoistic India vs. modern/stable China, cooperative/outward-looking Pakistan etc.

The analysis emanating from Moscow these days is practically indistinguishable, in its anti-India tenor, from what Washington (and American media) used to issue in the period 1972-2002 (or thereabouts).

^^Rudradevji,
There are so many moving parts to this situation right now and not all have stabilized now, esp with trump coming, while your theory is plausible from some signs, I dont think the writing on wall is that clear. Everyone is trying to find friends with benefits, even after a long stable relationship. My hunch feeling says trump will have a massive rapprochement with either of russia or china(less likely). In the first case china is screwed and in the second case everyone is screwed.

There are no permanent friends no enemies only permanent interests. The Russians are surprised that India is showing ballons. The FSU could wield influence by proving military hardware at friendship prices and Kashmir support at the UNSC.

They now want us to pay commercial prices for stuff that does not work/they don't buy and want us to kowtow to their Chinese financiers.

The cold war is over. One may complain about T-Rump and H1Bs but that is actually going to be a huge thing for India and those firms that recognize the need to innovate.

Ever tried to get a visa to Russia from India if you want to go on Business?

Name one Indian who heads up a Russian firm.

It is already happening , Read the New Foreign Policy Document of Russia

http://www.mid.ru/en/foreign_policy/off ... id/2542248
84. Russia will continue developing comprehensive, equal, and trust-based partnership and strategic cooperation with the People’s Republic of China, and proactively step up cooperation in all areas. Russia views common principled approaches adopted by the two countries to addressing the key issues on the global agenda as one of the core elements of regional and global stability. Building on this foundation, Russia intends to promote foreign policy cooperation with China in various areas, including countering new challenges and threats, resolving urgent regional and global problems, cooperation in international organizations and multilateral associations.

85. Russia is committed to further strengthening its special privileged partnership with the Republic of India based on shared foreign policy priorities, historical friendship and deep mutual trust, as well as strengthening cooperation on urgent international issues and enhancing mutually beneficial bilateral ties in all areas, primarily in trade and economy, with a focus on implementing long-term cooperation programmes approved by the two countries.

25. Russia attaches great importance to ensuring the sustainable manageability of global development, which requires collective leadership from the major States that should be representative in geographic and civilization terms and fully respect the central and coordinating role of the UN. To these ends, Russia has been expanding its ties with its partners within the Group of Twenty, BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and the Republic of South Africa), the SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization), RIC (Russia, India and China) alongside other organizations and dialogue platforms.

52. Russia views the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) as one of the key elements of the current security framework in the post-Soviet space. Russia seeks to facilitate the development of the CSTO into a prominent multifunctional international organization capable of overcoming challenges and threats today’s world is facing amid the growing pressure from various global and regional factors within the CSTO’s area of responsibility and in the adjoining regions.

53. Russia makes efforts to further unleash the CIS potential, establish the Commonwealth as an influential regional organization, a platform for multilateral political dialogue, as well as a mechanism for multi-faceted economic and humanitarian cooperation, and for countering traditional and new challenges and threats.

54. While respecting the right of its partners within the CIS to establish relations with other international actors, Russia expects the CIS member States to fully implement their obligations within integration structures that include Russia, as well as further promote integration and mutually beneficial cooperation in the CIS space.

Even the bilateral I do not see happening. Especially if Indian eco takes of.

http://www.janes.com/article/67399/russ ... ays-report
India and Russia are developing a new lightweight variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile for use on submarines and the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA (Perspektivny Aviatsionny Kompleks Frontovoy Aviatsii) fifth-generation fighter, Russia's TASS news agency reported on 27 January.

"We are working on the missile's light version. It should fit the size of a [533 mm] torpedo tube and be almost 1.5 times [lighter]. It will be possible to mount our airborne missile on a wide range [of aircraft]," Alexander Leonov, general designer and director of Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya was quoted as saying.

"We'll be developing it, first of all, for the fifth-generation [aircraft] but, possibly, it will be mounted on the MiG-35 fighter, although we have not carried out such developments," he added.

The BrahMos design is a co-operative programme led by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and NPO Mashinostroyenia (NPO Mash) in Russia. The original BrahMos missile is based on the Yakhont supersonic cruise missile, which is the export version of the Russian domestic P-800 (3M55) Oniks missile.

While the original BrahMos retains much of the Russian missile's aerodynamic design and manufactured components, it uses a number of Indian-made onboard systems.

All variants of the Brahmos are reported to have a range of 290 km and carry a warhead weighing between 200 kg and 300 kg.

The acronym BrahMos was coined by combining the names of the most famous rivers in the two nations: the Brahmaputra in India and the Moscow River in Russia.

The latest announcement came less than six months after India resurrected the stalled Fifth-Generation Fighter Aircraft (FGFA) programme it launched with Russia in 2007-08 by agreeing to pay USD3.7 billion over seven years towards furthering the project.

In September 2016 both sides agreed that each country would pay USD1 billion on signing the Sukhoi T-50 PAK-FA fighter developmental contract on which the FGFA is based, and USD450 million annually thereafter for the six years it will take to confirm the FGFA's final design for the Indian Air Force (IAF).

It seems that the agreement for the BrahMos-NG was signed during the October 2016 summit at Goa.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/new ... 926916.cms
The Indo-Russian agreement, signed during the bilateral summit at Goa, also includes development of missiles with smaller range that can be fired from submarines and aircraft. The deal was not made public at the summit — where other projects like sale of frigates and the S-400 air defence system purchase — were announced.
The strategic ties between India and Russia are strong and are growing stronger. However, because the partnership involves many extremely sensitive issues, the details are not being publicly divulged. This is how it should be.

If I remember correctly, Arun_S was fond of a Hindi saying: "The empty pot clatters."

I do not like to quote the whole comment but this represents some of my thought process at present. Political situation is very fluid and what will come out of all this is uncertain . India must be very smart about what it does in the immediate and medium term militarily and economically. When in doubt fall on your own people ( all out indigenous weapon development and internal markets economically rather than depending on exports like china ) u can not go wrong that way.

There is a huge barrier to entry to do any critical analysis of Russia with respect to India. Mostly due to lot of entrenched interests in giving "free pass" to Russia in many of its doings/undoings with India.
Exhibit A: Recently news from leaks showed how much Russia had and has cultivated commies and kangress inside India. The amount of influence and the depth of infiltration inside the Indian establishment is very high and continues to this day. This will never get dissected and get discussion time, as it would have if it is/was any other country.

Lucky Russians, they surely have cultivated the eco-system inside India very well. It is enviable. Only bhai-bhai all the way for some foreseeable future.
SDREs are flying blind with respect to Russia and will continue to do so for some more time. Even if they find faults later, SDREs will self-blame. Russia is a blindspot and not much of analysis will happen.

The basic thing is Russia is not interested in making India Russian orthodox. It is this religious interest influencing with national interaction that makes Indian's beware of American outreach to India since religious lobbyists end up subverting India-American relationship since they cannot tolerate pagan Hindus. Russia also buys influence in India, that is a given. Having said that, in weapons development and cooperation, India and Russia do have a huge level of cooperation and we should keep that going. A HAL person, of ex-IAF origin openly told me that Russian designers valued Indian input and adjusted accordingly. The French, would not. The Russian's have learned the value of Indian input after Brahmos, MKI etc and usage of MiG-21 etc in conflict showed them how different India was to the traditional pliant states. In return, we got cooperation on Arihant, BMD (Russians debated the designs with us, which few others would do), cheap weapons aplenty to give us a qualitative and numerical advantage vs TSP.. yes, we have issues too - mostly spares and logistical. But Russians are finally waking up. I think the future remains bright & cooperation will remain strong. India's growing technological prowess will result in true JVs & we should keep our cooperation with Russia going.

BTW, Indians are not flying blind. Level of frustration with Russian after sales support is what led to P-8I, Rafale, Israeli deals etc. Having said that, we simply cannot get Arihant level cooperation with the west until & unless we become a full client state/part of NATO (eg UK) or end up offering our own society up for grabs to the EJ (SoKo etc). Neither is palatable. Russia remains an independent power willing to share tech with India which is a plus and we should continue with that approach. PRC access remains limited to Tier 2 gear in many cases in terms of offensive systems (e Su-35 only in limited numbers after VVS gets Su-3x, Su-30MKI and PAKFA advances), and given PRC behavior, its but a matter of time before PRC throws its weight around with Russia too, and all the Sinophiles will get a wake up call.

I don't think that PRC access to Russian weapons is our main concern, in any case we have little leverage there and there has always been (for decades) a precedent of Russian tech being shared with the PRC so it's nothing new.

What is setting alarm bells ringing and stirring some avowed Russophiles is the warming Russia-Pakistan relationship. Pakis have been opening talking on their talk shows (relevant because these are talking points put out by the ISI/ISPR and parroted by everyone) about joining some kind of an axis with Russia, and there have been ominous sounding articles from Russian think-tanks as well. Combine the reportedly anti-India and pro-Paki Russian ambassador to Afghanistan, and the unfortunate demise of their ambassador to India, and this is at the very least a situation that needs to be watched closely. If Russia moves towards Pakistan, or even to an equi-distant relationship with Pakistan and India, or joins CPEC, this would be very dangerous for us. Likewise if they started selling them weapons, even relatively low-end weapons like anti-tank systems would be game changers.

Timely article.

"Christian charity set to withdraw from India after funding blocked"

"“Compassion International itself accepts that some part of the funds is used for religious/spiritual activities. Incorrect description of activities had also led to taxation enquiries.”

Officials had met with Compassion staff in January offering to help register the organisation’s partners as religious bodies, but it “chose not to pursue this suggestion”, the spokesman said.

The number of foreign-funded organisations operating in India has reportedly shrunk by nearly half in the past two years amid a crackdown by the government of Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata party.

Twenty-five organisations were denied the right to receive foreign funding in November because of “activities not conducive to the national interest”, India’s home ministry said, and more than 11,000 failed to renew their licences.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/ ... ng-blocked

That said, it is not GOTUS is pushing it. They only get involved because constituents insist and lobby to striker down curbs. The refusal to register as a religious body is interesting.

It should continue to be our main concern because Russian dependence on PRC may cause them to transfer more tech. Even if Tier 1.5 and not Tier 1, it makes a big difference for us.

Pak talks a lot about every darn thing. But what is the end-result?
Frankly, if we clear up our own cesspool politics, and also get our IS forces better hand in dealing with proxy war eg Dhanush strikes + SF etc + directed HUMINT ops.. then i think TSP is a manageable deal.

Whether whole of GOTUS pushes it or not is besides the point. Segments of GOTUS are amenable to such efforts and hence Indo-US relationship remains affected by these EJ antics.

^^^It is the point . For an example of how Russia pushes the Orthodox Church to establish beachheads take a look at this

https://www.nytimes.com/2016/09/14/worl ... hurch.html

“They are advancing pawns here and everywhere; they want to show that there is only one Russia, the Russia of Putin,” said Alexis Obolensky, vice president of the Association Culturelle Orthodoxe Russe de Nice, a group of French believers, many of them descendants of White Russians who fled Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917. They want nothing to do with a Moscow-based church leadership headed by Kirill, patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, a close ally of the Russian president."

It is against US law to push for any religion in its foreign for domestic policy. It is important not conflate the US policy of seeking religious tolerance with advocacy. There may be individuals in GOTUS who favor advocacy but they have no legal standing. As NaMo has shown, you can say Francis Urqhart.

The vast expansion of EJs in UPA admins were due to the termite queen whom nobody wanted to offend. Once we have a congress mukht Bharat, this threat will disappear.

It wasn't merely lobbysist though but many in GOTUS who wanted a white italian at the helm as versus a brown hindu.
Now its a self lickin ice cream cone - the EJ outrage industry + CAIR types + loony left + both left lib and RW senators, all peddle the caste-cows-story.

Never mind the sheer brazen hypocrisy of asking hindus to be tolerant.. while they get murdered, assauled, converted. Not even the most skilled PR shill can defend this sorta stuff.

Its not as easy to dismiss at all and will remain a challenge throughout our relationship, until the US fundamentally changes. And it won't. Even under Obama's term, we had this stuff pick up, not reduce.

^^^"until the US fundamentally changes."

Not so. It is until we WE fundamentally change.

"The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, But in ourselves, that we (prefer to believe) we are underlings."

I have had this argument with countrymenz since the 1970s. Look at the history of shooting ourselves in the foot: UNSC, Kashmir etc.etc

Waiting for the others to 'change' is the folly our 'netas' perpetrated for 60+ years. in 1985 PRC GDP was less than ours. Unlike us they were not focused on 'ToT' and import substitution. We were much more preoccupied with the 'dignity of labor' (assembly line work), R&D transfer all the wish lists. They were focused on building manufacturing capability while our IAS types laughed at them for being MNC exploited 'slave labor'.

The US is nor going to change to suit our sensitivities . We are faced today with a China that wants to reduce us to a tributary. They have the money, the resources and they have the technology. Our bravado notwithstanding, we are less equipped to deal with them than we were in 1962.

Given the colossal stupidities pre NaMo, we are left with a stark choice: we have to align ourselves with the US as a junior partner or be a junior partner with the Shanghai Cooperation with PRC/Russia as leads and us as junior followers in the same league as Pakistan.

There are no 'third fronts', no NAMs, no 'India's way. We long ago screwed up alternatives by not understanding even as we produced a lot of 'economists'.

Lot of leftist faculty in US universities and in Indian universities want us to play the junior partner to the Han.

I'm choosing the lesser of two evils. I am following the big dog that will have people like me whose Indianness does not preclude them from being CEOs (the usual Satya Nadella, Sundar Pichai, Indra Nooyi plus 100s of others).

In short I want to with the big dog that will help me not eat me. Of course, the Han eat dogs too but that's another story.

The Indian government has started looking for sites on the coast of Andhra Pradesh for setting up a nuclear power plant (NPP) with Russian assistance, Minister of State for Atomic Energy Jitendra Singh told the Rajya Sabha on Feb. 3.

“The site selection committee of the government is exploring the possibility of identifying a suitable coastal site in Andhra Pradesh for locating nuclear power plants with Russian cooperation,” Singh told the upper house of the Indian Parliament.

Negotiations are underway, but no official decision has taken yet on the site, the Ahmedabad Mirror said, citing sources in Russian state owned nuclear company Rosatom.

Sputnik reported, that the potential project will comprise of Russian made VVER Generation 3 units with 1200 Megawatt capacity each.

Jitendra Singh told the Rajya Sabha that some locals in the southern Indian state have expressed apprehensions about the safety of the nuclear power plants and loss of traditional means of livelihood.

International experts have vouched for the safety of Russian-built nuclear plants.

Meanwhile, the second unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) has reached 100 percent capacity (1000 megawatts) in January.

KNPP’s second unit was connected to the power grid of India on Aug. 29, 2016. Physical start-up of the unit commenced in May 2016 when the first fuel assembly was loaded into the reactor. In total, 163 fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor.

Rosatom constructed the nuclear power plant, which is now being operated by The Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL).

In December 2014, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed the ‘Strategic Vision’ document, which envisages the construction of at least 12 more Russian-designed nuclear power units in India.

http://katehon.com/article/five-forces- ... rds-russia
( Now we understand their Pakiroach approach and language:If there is stink,A La'whori in not far Behind! Usual Paki-kwas for FWIW)
FIVE FORCES BEHIND PAKISTAN’S PIVOT TOWARDS RUSSIA
This article is meant to explore them one by one. During the past six decades the relationship between Islamabad and Moscow was defined and redefined by changing geopolitical interests which resulted in low key ties between the two countries especially during the East Pakistan civil war in which the Soviet Union backed India and its Mukhti Bhini proxy forces against Pakistan’s state authority and later during the Soviet Afghan war. T.The trend in Washington of ‘using and abusing’ Pakistan hasn’t ended because as of this week the US Govt has imposed a fresh set of sanctions on seven Pakistani companies which hold great importance for Pakistan’s national security. It goes without saying that the bedrock of emerging Pakistan – Russia relationship is the mutual agreement and alignment of interests over the concept of ‘multipolarity’.. This new strategy by Pakistan also serves to align its regional interests with Moscow’s and helps diversify Islamabad’s foreign, economic and strategic interests in the Central Asian region hence further depleting its toxic dependence on the United States for economic and diplomatic support. Pakistan and Russia have common regional and bilateral interests stemming from the geopolitical realignment which is occurring in the wake of the US lead so called ‘War on terrorism’. Pakistan believes that a multi-polar world order is critical for maintaining both regional and international peace and stability. The instability stemming from the US lead war in Afghanistan threatens national and regional security interests of China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and Central Asian Republics, therefore Pakistan seeks greater cooperation with Beijing, Moscow and Tehran to bring about a regional solution to the war in Afghanistan, because only by returning peace to Afghanistan the violence centered justification of the continued US lead occupation of Afghanistan can be brought to an end.Peace in Afghanistan is also necessary to contain or reverse the subversive influence of the United States which has been cultivated specifically to threaten and bully our region if needed through the planned ‘permanent military bases’ in Afghanistan therefore Islamabad’s enthusiastic participation in the recently held tri-lateral dialogue between China, Russia and Pakistan hosted in Moscow to bring about a regional consensus on the future of Afghanistan serves as a tangible example of the geopolitical symmetry which has evolved between Pakistan and Russia on critical geopolitical issues.
Indian deep state has been telling itself how good it really is at ‘playing all sides’ throughout the years of the Cold War and congratulating itself to date over what it chooses to believe as a ‘dynamic’ foreign policy. While on one hand India continued to have covert ties with Washington during the cold war, continued to receive American foreign aid to a degree that it became the single biggest recipient of the US aid money in the world, it pulled the ‘non aligned’ card on the other hand and continued to assure the Soviet Union of their ‘special relationship’. Through this policy the Indian deep state kept the tabs of US aid and Soviet military equipment open at the same time. This was possible because the India was providing covert support to the US for its anti-China activities from its soil in return for the US aid and the United States chose to turn a ‘Nelson’s eye’ towards India’s ‘special relationship’ with the Soviet Union during a time when the Soviet-Chinese ties weren’t always warm. Today though, the sands of time have shifted as a significant geopolitical alignment has occurred between Moscow and Beijing which has altered the regional geopolitical landscape. The Indian deep state has decided to part ways with the regional powers to join hands with the United States through agreements like the Logistics Exchange Memorandum of Agreement or LMOA.The United States is all too eager to utilize India in order to contain the China-Russia axis which seeks a much balanced multi-polar world order. The Americans can pat themselves on the back for succeeding to make India believe that it has ‘emerged’ and therefore it can openly confront Beijing and Moscow in order to achieve its delusional objectives of hegemony in the South-Central Asian and Indian Ocean Region with support from the United States of America. The Indo-US nexus is designed to protect the world order created by the US in the 1990s which is in direct conflict with Chinese, Russian and Pakistani regional interests. This trend has been exacerbated since the Hindu nationalist Govt lead by Narendra Modi has assumed the high office in New Delhi, because it has convinced itself to dovetail Indian regional ambitions with the US global interests in a hope to hegemonize the region, even if it comes in direct conflict with the Chinese, Russian and Pakistani interests made evident by its support for the ethno-nationalist terrorist groups in Pakistan’s Balochistan province which also threatens the Russian North-South Corridor project with Iran, as well as the 51 billion dollar China, Pakistan Economic Corridor project. :rotfl:

In the view of India’s growing relations with the US, the ‘intelligencia’ in Moscow had to make the Russia-Pakistan ties independent of the ‘India factor’, which couldn’t have come at a better time for Pakistan as an independent bilateral relationship does set a very fertile playing field for the future evolution of the Pakistan – Russia rapprochement, perhaps one day even to a strategic level. Pakistan believes that its relationship with Russia has solid ground of its own, the two countries face common challenges, and therefore it would be wise for Moscow keep its budding relationship with Islamabad completely independent from Moscow’s relationship with New Delhi.Much has been written about the desire of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union to reach the ‘Warm Waters’ of the Arabian sea and the challenges it faced over the past centuries which prevented it from happening. The British Empire did everything it could to make sure the Russian Empire doesn’t realize this dream; the buffer state of Afghanistan was created to stop any attempts by the Russian Empire to gain access to the warm waters. After the British Empire faded into history, the United States was able to persuade Pakistan to reject any rapprochement with Russia, therefore again preventing the Soviet Union and later the Russian Federation from having access to the Pakistani ports. The geopolitical sands started to really shift in the 1990s when the United States imposed economic sanctions on Pakistan for its nuclear weapons program which was in a direct response to the Indian nuclear weapons program for deterrence purposes and for maintaining strategic stability in South Asia.
As Moscow hosted a strategic tri-lateral meeting between Chinese, Pakistani and Russian delegations to find a settlement to Afghanistan issue, the detractors watched with interest. This tri-lateral meeting was the third such event but first to be hosted in Russia. The purpose of these meetings is to find a regional solution and develop a long term strategic understanding between three regional capitals for finding a long lasting solution to the instability in Afghanistan and specifically to defeat the threat posed by the Afghan branch of the Middle Eastern terrorist group IS also known as Daesh. Pakistan has played a key role in creating a regional consensus through this platform as Pakistan remains the most dominant player in Afghanistan and holds the ‘key to the castle’. Pakistan has always promoted a ‘grand consensus’ as a long term solution for Afghanistan, an arrangement which opens doors for the Afghan Taliban to be absorbed into the political apparatus of Afghanistan, a proposition opposed by India. Therefore it remains Pakistan’s constant ambition to broker peace in Afghanistan by bringing all opposing sides to the table, including the Afghan Taliban as exemplified by Islamabad’s support for the deal signed between the Kabul government and Gulbadin Hikmatyar.Keeping this strategy in view, Pakistan has played its role in bridging the differences between the Afghan Taliban, China and Russia. The declaration of the meeting stated that the three partners wish to remove a number of Afghan Taliban leaders from the sanction list and hope to cooperate with them for a long lasting peace and stability in Afghanistan. Pakistan has also actively worked to broker a copper mining deal between China and Afghan Taliban in order to foster a working relationship and trust between the two parties. In this context, it can be established that Pakistan shares common interests with Russia in Afghanistan and in the Central Asian region which is important for Moscow from a security point of view and for Pakistan from an economic point of view. This cooperation is very important as it has strategic objectives and is expected to be a major defining factor for the emerging geopolitical axis between Pakistan, Russia, and China. Russian President has expressed willingness to conduct sales of most advanced Russian military equipment to combat terrorism. This is an interesting prospect for Pakistan which requires advance equipment for its counter-terrorism operations. Russian defense manufacturers also participated in the IDEAS-2016 defense exhibition in Karachi to present their offerings and to further enhance industrial cooperation with their Pakistani counterparts. Through this growing cooperation in technical and training regimes, Russia and Pakistan are ushering confidence into an emerging regional partnership for maintaining peace and stability in the region. This partnership when fully adopted will prove to be mutually beneficial for both countries and will further strengthen the bond between Pakistan and Russia.

India will take part in an international meeting on Afghanistan in Moscow in the middle of February, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Feb. 7. Other participants at the meeting include China, Iran and Pakistan, besides Afghanistan and the hosts.

“We have a common understanding that there is the need to boost efforts (for reconciliation in Afghanistan),” Lavrov was quoted by TASS as saying. “In this context, we confirmed the invitation for the Afghan colleagues for another meeting on Afghanistan’s settlement due in mid-February in Moscow, with participation of representatives of Russia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Iran and India.”

India, Russia working to resolve Afghan crisis
India confirmed its participation when National Security Advisor Ajit Doval was in Moscow, sources told RIR.

“We expect that all partners will be represented at a high level, and most of them have already confirmed their participation,” Lavrov said.

In January, Russia, China and Pakistan held a meeting on Afghanistan. It was widely misreported in the Indian and Afghan media that Moscow decided to engage the Taliban at Islamabad’s prodding.

On Feb. 7, Lavrov reiterated to his Afghan counterpart Salahuddin Rabbani that Russia condemned terrorism in Afghanistan and fully backed the present government in Kabul.

“Russia and Afghanistan are old-time and close partners, and are interested in cooperation in security, humanitarian and economic areas,” Lavrov told Rabbani. “We support efforts of Afghanistan’s leadership in stabilizing the situation in the country and in the war on terror.”

Russia had not joined UK, US and France in that resolution against JEM founder Masood Azhar. This is not a minor issue for India. Russia certainly seems to have decided to move away from India and embrace China as part of its larger strategy to counter US in the global arena. The embrace with China means Russia will have to entertain China's poodle Pakistan also. This is evident in the way Pakis are getting traction on Russian strategy in Afghanistan. India Russi bhai bhai phase is facing its strongest challenge in decades and it will only get worse from here IMHO.

Your argument fundamentally boils down to being a colony of x versus y. Most Indians would disagree and in recent years, the stranglehold of all sorts of colonizers is receding - lets see if Modi can keep that going.

India may have made many missteps but it was also actively undermined by many groups

Neither is this stark business stuff really the truth either. India didn't buckle in the 80's or the 90's and yet here we go, still worrying that somehow the PRC will roll over us and this and that. There are gaps - eg if the PLAAF were to get J-20s vs our limited number of exotic radars, our limited number of SAM systems, earlier serviceability issues.. issues are being systematically addressed. Not all will be made public either.

Even if the PLAAF was the USAAF with F-22s a dime a dozen and the IAF didn't exist. And the USN became the PLAN. They still have to take ground and hold that ground to gobble up India. Not happening, with the IA literally in every inch of Indian territory. The Seelow Heights will be a sideshow in that sort of conflict.

Every day that goes by, India moves up a notch with a competent admin at the center and its Agnis and khadi-gramudyog nukes will deter all sorts of predators.

Russian ambassador to UN Vitaly Churkin dies suddenly. Ambassador to Turkey dead, founder of RT dead mysteriously, Putin,s own driver dead in moscow in a car "accident"(if you watch the footage on u tube that is no accident but clearly deliberate).

My take on all this is that we with our terrible history of traitors within and enemies outside should have a intelligence agency where the best and the brightest of India,s sons and daughters one day soon will go to serve their motherland. India must reply to tracherous behaviour in the same coin or worse. Human nature is unchangeable ,we must protect our civilization against all enemies and choose our friends wisely not emotionally and not think in short term.It is my hope that one day Indian parents will not just be happy sending their sons and daughters to be successful businessman, doctors and engineers but also in intelligence services. India,s future depends on it.

May Vitaly Churkin Soul Rest In Peace

No more war games with Pak: Russia
Tuesday, 21 February 2017 | Vineeta Pandey | New Delhi

http://www.dailypioneer.com/todays-news ... ussia.html
In a significant decision, the Russian Government has decided not to hold any more bilateral military exercises with Pakistan. The decision was taken by Moscow given the strong reactions from India after Russia conducted a counter-terrorism military exercise with Pakistan in that country just about the time when India conducted surgical strikes along the Line of Control. Russian sources also clarified that they believe Pakistan is a breeding ground for terrorism and Moscow will strongly support India in its fight against terrorism.

“For better trust and understanding we do not plan to repeat such exercises with Pakistan as it was not received well in India,” highly-placed sources in the Russian Government told The Pioneer.

Russia conducted its first-ever military exercise with Pakistan, called Druzhba 2016. Pakistani media claimed that the exercise was to be held in Rattu in Gilgit Baltistan area of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, which was promptly denied by Russia, saying the military exercise was planned in advance to be held at Special Forces Academy in Cherat which was nowhere close to POK. Russia claimed the exercise was meant to improve efficiency of its own security forces in mountainous areas and counter-terror operations, apart from making an assessment of the situation in Pakistan.

“The Russia-Pak joint military exercise coincided with an attack in Uri, which of course was not good. But who knew that this barbaric attack would be happening around the same time,” said a Russian official.

“From our side this military exercise was directed to see how Pakistan can tackle terror problems and their level of preparedness. We know several terrorists live in Pakistan who attempt to harm India from time to time. We do not want Pakistan to be a breeding ground for terrorism. We wanted to be on the spot to assess the situation and correct it if possible,” the source added.

At the same time, ISIS is a big concern for Russia which believes that it can take help from Taliban or other terror groups in the region. “We do not want Afghanistan to have terror launch pads against Russia,” sources said.

They pointed out that late Russian Ambassador Alexander M Kadakin was the first to react against the heinous terror attacks in India and support surgical strikes.

However, the exercise took place shortly after the terror attack on India’s military camp in Uri in Jammu & Kashmir and its timing was also close to surgical strikes by Indian Special Forces against Pakistan-based terrorist launching pads along the LoC.

Ahead of India-Russia annual bilateral Summit in Goa last year, India conveyed its opposition to Russia over the joint exercises with Pakistan. “We have conveyed our views to the Russian side that military cooperation with Pakistan which is a State that sponsors and practices terrorism as a matter of State policy is a wrong approach and it will only create further problems,” Indian Ambassador to Moscow Pankaj Saran reportedly told Russian authorities while apprising them of Indian sensitivities.

The Russian side also expressed displeasure over the stories “planted” in Pakistani media to create fissures in India-Russia relationship. “Our relationship with India has been historically special and it will remain special. Nothing can come in between the two nations. There should be no doubt anywhere about this. Our priorities are clear and we will work for the interest of India,” said the source adding the time-tested relationship will stand the test of time.

Meanwhile, defending Russia’s move to supply four transport helicopters to Pakistan, sources said these are for humanitarian purpose and Russia will keep an eye if they are used in offensive operations. Officials also dismissed reports about Russia supplying Su-35 fighter planes to Pakistan or having any involvement in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.
