So far this year, the company is said to have delivered nine of its F-15 Eagle fighters, 31 F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, along with EA-18G Growlers. By moving at a pace of manufacturing of four every month, the Super Hornet/Growler will provide a total of 47 airplanes in 2014. However, the F-15 has no monthly delivery program the company delivered two planes in January, April & June respectively and one in February, March & July and not any in the month of May or August

In 1984, Indian Air Force could have 'inflicted major damage' on Pakistan's nuclear facilities, CIA believed
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/indi ... 865788.cms
Surprisingly, the CIA document also says that MiG-29s - which India at the time was awaiting delivery of - had "medium-range capability superior to" that of the F-16s, which were and still are made by the US. Notably, Pakistan possessed F-16s.

Jaguar will have Fly by wire?? I mean, this will be a serious upgrade. Why not order couple of new squadrons as well?

When did they close the line? I thought they were making it even a few years back. Didn't AKA order a batch of 20?

The Jaguar line was converted to the Hawk assembly line. See the last paragraph of this report from 2008 when the last Jaguar was delivered. http://www.livemint.com/Companies/1T5mn ... -jets.html
Not sure where they will perform the re-engining. I mean where are the Darin upgrades being performed?

My understanding is after Hawk Assembly is complete, the infrastructure will be used for Jaguar D3 upgrade

I'm not getting this need to upg jag engines. Iirc ahuja sahab had done some analysis on this. Its not like the bird becomes an a2a fighter all of a sudden. Alas if iaf had gotten the more versatile viggen or mirage f1 instead. More importantly we'll be doing an upgrade so late in the jags life that it will be retired within 10 years of the reengine. Like the lush upgrade....finished in 2010 and retired 2016. Only this time it is much more expensive.

Rather spend dollars on more lca, used mirages, fulcrum etc. Plus the likelihood of a solah coming in.....the jag with darin 3 stands is good enough without engine upgrade seems like.

It is about better hot and high performance, not air combat. It will do better in the Himalayas and over Tibet. Also take offs with heavier loads from higher altitude airfields

Humph

It says
So far, we have no intensions (sic) to place any order for the upgraded version of Hawk trainers,” said a senior IAF officer
And that sentence means "IAF says no"

I am willing to bet that the IAF will eventually get old Hawks modified with slats and new caakpits.

May be a limited nos can be ordered for SKAT.. The additional turning and climbing performance would be useful for an Aerobatic team and it also lets the squadron perform some combat roles, instead of getting disbanded during combat..

Balaji...that's a great idea. A good way to market the aircraft (and the Indian Air Force) to other friendly nations. Just because the IAF said no, that does not necessarily mean the door to shut to other nations.

The combat hawk is a perfect candidate for air policing duties + pilot training ofc for SLAF.
Would fit their budget too.

Unlikely to be used in a MANPAD infested environment against well defended targets, should work for strafing weakly defended or lightly armed positions

A forward position of an infantry company would hardly have an "infestation" of MANPAD's, I believe. Those well defended targets would be the Battalion and company headquarter positions which would be a bit behind the frontline where CAS is required, especially in the hills. In any case, they come equipped with CMDS to handle the presence of MANPAD's.

Lt Gen Mahmood assured us that air support was not envisaged and that his forces could take care of enemy aircraft, if they intervened. “I have Stingers on every peak,” he announced.
The results achieved by the IAF in the first two days were dismal. Serious restraints seem to have been imposed on the freedom of action of IAF fighters in what was basically a search-and-destroy mission. Lt Gen Mahmood’s rant about a ‘Stinger on every peak’ seemed true. It was obvious that the IAF had under-estimated the SAM threat. The mood in Pak Army circles was that of undiluted elation, and the PAF was expected to sit it out while sharing the khakis’ glee.

Philosophical question:

How does any air force discover whether any area has manpads or not?

The only way to do it if intel and recce do not give any inputs is to go into the area with flares and find out. Staying out of the area is out of the question.

In 1999 the IAF went in and found out - but I suspect the helo and MiG 21 did not have flares. That was a deficiency

Think current recce pods afford a capability to stay out of Man pad range and get operational data.
The precision bombing capability too..

Biggest threat man pads would pose would be to attack heloes on a strafing run and low flying aircraft trying to avoid radar detection in the mountains by flying low..

IAF could hardly commit to Combat aircraft for next EPP years based on perception of manpad alone.

The combat hawk hardly has any capability to execute tasks of a fighter aircraft. And I am not even talking about war.

Let's take routine peace time policing for example;

IAF is regularly called to interrogate civvie aircrafts who are off course or some issues with identification or wrong communication codes etc. Modern wide body aircraft fly high and fast - hawk cant simply catch-up.

The only operations use case is coin, for which IAF does not deploy fixed wing aircraft. The rare instances of coin aircraft firing in anger involve helicopters and not fighters since 1957.

Combat hawk should be marketed as a trainer. When push comes to above I bet air force will throw it in to ops but that's different.

This should have been in the air at Aero India 2017.
An upgraded IAF MiG-29 UPG remained on static display.

This was a massive let down personally.. To see such a capable bird sitting like a hangar queen.. I guess they did not want to reveal the changes to the flight envelope due to the upgrade, if any, or they have still not examined the flight envelope fully to put this bird through her paces in a public display..

and electronic warfare aircraft capable of sustained jamming i guess like the Growlers .no use against heat seeking missiles though .. you definitely need intel on the ground

Looks like may not happen with F125.
Although Jaguar with HAL engine would be interesting. Worth trying even if nothing happens.

The above page shows Jaguar will be used till 2034. 25KN priority for HJT-36, and then plan to scale it up for Jaguar upgrade.

Another Super Hercules damaged in Ladakh, India now has only four - By Rajat Pandit on TOI
NEW DELHI: A C-130J 'Super Hercules' aircraft being flown by the commanding officer of the elite 'Veiled Vipers' squadron of IAF has been left badly-damaged after it crashed into a pole and other structures while taxing on the tarmac in the high-altitude Thoise airfield in Ladakh recently.

Sources say the IAF is now conducting a high-level court of inquiry (CoI) into the unusual mishap after relieving the pilot, Group Captain Jasveen Singh Chatrath, of his command of the 77 Squadron (Veiled Vipers) based at Hindon airbase on the outskirts of New Delhi.

Looks like the base design had issues and the Group Captain who is acknowledged as being an excellent pilot otherwise, hence had a mishap. Also, why don't we get more C-130 Js? Are we going to wait till they too are out of production?
