OTOH though, if he had been bumped off, it might have caused even more chaos and hurt them more, though Benazir might still be around. Personally, I thing Benazir would have been 10 times more dangerous than Mushy to India.
Don't get GOI mandrains wrong!
They Luuved Mushy in power. He was almost a RAA agint.
After Lal masjid, GoI was almost going to award him with a padamshree or some such valuable decoration.
It might have happened too, if doval-ji had been NSA :rotfl:

No wonder they went all out to save his musharraf.

Which BTW, brings us to a more pressing state of affairs. I count GoI and elements in India as one of the four fathers of El Bakistan.
That abomination can never be decimated until its protectors in lootyens delhi are around.
Every Paki PM gets intel from RAW, those guys always want to know what their COAS and ISI chief are upto.

The fauj on their part actively spy on all Indian embassy staffers, their families and kids, as they do with their PM, and his extended family. Their mistrust and deep psychosis knows no bounds. One can imagine the heartburn that must have happened in aabpara and pindi when the current PM Sharif called up Modi from Sri Lanka or when the two held an animated conversation in New York and Raiwind, without any fauji being within an earshot

SSridhar wrote:China should ensure Pakistan avert debt default: Chinese media - Economic Times

"A surge in the country's deficit would make it vulnerable to external shocks and would increase Pakistan's chances of a debt default. As a major creditor and the largest investor in Pakistan, China has an obligation to safeguard its investments in Pakistan and ensure it can recoup its loans," it said.
So they will pay Pakistan so that Pakistan can pay them back for the loans that they have already provided to Pakistan?

Sooner or later they are bound to realize that they are not investors in Pakistan but sugar daddy to a middle-aged diseased crack h0e

They are mostly mijjile maalishing and paalishing, and making components used for 'other' ujej, all under the strict watchful Fauji eyes.

The best part of SUAR-CO is that it isn't just a cooked up insult. The space agency's name actually checks out against that acronym :rotfl:

Pakistan cancels licenses of weapons issued to Hafiz Saeed and his aides

Is it Chini pressure, or are they serious this time, about "reigning in " Suar Saeed !

See, massa gave the SUARCO guys sounding rockets, and taught them to launch them into the stratosphere back in the 60's.

So they used all this wonderfool knowledge of raakitery and made the super duper Hatf-1 and 2, arguably the only missiles they truly indigenously developed, albeit by stealing a sounding raakit's tech.

Image
This azeem shahkaar of Raakitery :rotfl: was mounted on this thela - no TEL, which was developed pindigenously by Wah ordinance factories.
It had truly advanced guidance system for that era back in the 80s, and one could specify one of the 4 directions it would fly to: North, East, South and West, and the raakit would fall some 30-70 kms in that general direction. With Hatf-2, they improved the guidance and it could now accept NNE, NEE etc type of guidance - truly remarkable !

Mirza Aslam Beg must have been 400%ly bissed when he saw that the kafir yindoos instead of dhoti shivering were :rotfl: and promptly ordered Xerox khan to fly to beijing and pyong yang to get better looking raakits.

SUARCO makes components for the mijjile guidance these days.

The rest all raakitery of the Islamic Republic of El Bakistan is Chinese (Solid Fueled and cruise) or North Korean (Liquid Fueled)

Jamaat -ul - Ahraar Claims Attack On Charsadda Court .

3 bombers killed during attack on Charsadda court: officials
Security forces killed three suicide attackers who attempted to wreak havoc at a local court in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's Charsadda district, officials said Tuesday.DSP Charsadda Fayaz Khan said five civilians have been killed in the attack, which the proscribed Jamaat-ul-Ahraar (JuA) has claimed.Director General Inter-Services Public Relations, Major General Asif Ghafoor tweeted, "Chief of Army Staff lauds security forces' response to Charsada Blast. First tier Police response has saved many lives. Shares grief on loss of lives."
t was not immediately clear how many people were inside, but hundreds of people including lawyers, judges and citizens normally attend such district court complexes every day.Upto 10 ambulances were dispatched to Charsadda from Peshawar, where the Lady Reading Hospital has been put on high alert.
Charsadda is a nearly 40 minute drive from KP’s provincial capital Peshawar, and has been a target of terror attacks for nearly a decade.
n the last 10 days, over 100 people have killed in terror attacks in Sindh, Balochistan, KP, Fata and Punjab. On Feb 13, a suicide blast on Lahore's Mall road saw 13 people dead and 85 injured. The banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility. In another incident on Feb 13, two Bomb Disposal Squad personnel were killed in Quetta while trying to defuse a roadside bomb at Sariab road. On Feb 15, five people lost their lives in a suicide blast outside a government office in Mohmand Agency. JuA had claimed the responsibility for the attack. In a separate suicide attack on Feb 15, one person died as a suicide attacker targeted a judges' vehicle in Peshawar. TTP claimed the attack. On Feb 16, in what is said to be the worst attack in the recent surge of terrorism, a suicide attack on the Lal Shahbaz Qalandar Shrine in Sehwan saw over 85 people dead while more than 200 were injured. The responsibility for the attack was claimed by the militant Islamic State (IS) group. The same day, on Feb 16, an IED blast in Awaran, Balochistan left three security officials dead.
In a separate news report, the head of the Lal Masjid, the "famous" Maluana Ghazi has distanced himself from claims by Jamaat -ul- Ahraar that the "attacks" were made in his ( Ghazi's ) name

Dunno about the TTP, but to me, it seems more like the United Jeehard Front people are trying to send the state a message with regards to the protective custody of its leader - half-is-suar saeed.
Even a sham 'protective custody' apparently dents the echendee of Mr Saeed, hence this reaction.

This reaction is duly noted for future reference by interested quarters. Ahem!

Is Jammat - Ul - Ahraar The New Kid On The Block ?

From August 2014 to date, Jamaat ul Ahrar has been found involved in 116 terrorist attacks in Pakistan
By Muhammad Amir Rana
POSTED IN FULL.
Since its establishment in 2014, Jamaat-ul-Ahrar has proved to be a lethal terrorist group, by perpetrating some of the most brutal attacks in Pakistan. While the leadership is currently based out of Afghanistan, Ahrar has networks in Bajaur and Mohmand agencies of the Federally Administrative Tribal Areas, as well as support structures in others parts of the country. The militant outfit is the brainchild of Omar Khalid Khorasani — an ambitious Taliban commander and a former member of the Pakistani Taliban’s Shura - who parted ways with the Taliban after they pursued peace talks with the government.
From August 2014 to date, the group has been found involved in 116 terrorist attacks in Pakistan, against diverse targets ranging from security forces, tribal elders, and minorities to sectarian communities. Last year, Ahrar launched an operation titled “al-Raad” (Thunder). Shortly after, it orchestrated attacks on the Charsadda University, the Christian community on Easter Day in Lahore, Quetta’s Civil Hospital, Session Courts in Mardan and on an FC camp in Mohmand Agency.
Earlier this month, it launched “Operation Ghazi”, and has since planned and executed eight gun and bomb attacks.
Fellow Jihadist , Abdul Ghazi ( of the notorious Lal Masjid )is "up in arms" by the "misuse" of his name
The group’s strategy, it seems, is to employ back-to-back attacks, to create more impact and panic, rather than long intervolved attacks. In the last few years, the Pakistani Taliban’s seemingly weakening capabilities has strengthened Ahrar, although the group has a tendency to accommodate new ideological, political, and operational trends.Khorasani is among the ideologues of the tribal Taliban movement; he also worked as an editor of the Taliban’s quarterly magazine Ihya-e-Khilafat. Previously, he was associated with several Pakistan-based militant organisations, including the banned Harkatul Mujahideen and Jaish-e-Muhammad. ( So, at one time, they were all "lapdogs" of the Deep State; but now they are coming back to "bite" their masters, as according to them, the Goberment is not green enough !)
For the young leader, the siege of the Red Mosque was a turning point. (He even renamed a mosque in his native village Ghaziabad in Mohmand Agency after it in 2007).For Khorasani, the siege of the Red Mosque was a turning point.Soon, Khorasani took up arms against the state and killed pro-Afghan Taliban commander Shah Khalid in 2008.
Both Daesh and Ahrar are products of the same narrative. Khorasani and his close aide, Omer Asim, who later went on to become the head of the Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), reportedly disagreed with the strategies of the global and regional militant leaderships. The men were instead heavily influenced by extremist strategist, Abu Bakr Naji and Abu Musab al-Suri, as well as Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Naji’s published work includes, “The Management of Savagery: The Most Critical Stage Through Which the Umma Will Pass,” compiles lessons learned from previous extremist initiatives, as well as proposes a future direction for the movement. While, Suri’s 1,600-page book, “The Call to a Global Islamic Resistance,” which both men have read, advocates ‘leaderless jihad’ and strategies such employ lone-wolf attacks.
In 2014, when Daesh announced the establishment of a so-called Caliphate in Iraq and Syria, Ahrar was expected to be one of the first groups to declare allegiance. Yet, surprisingly it wasn’t. Instead, Taliban commanders from the Orakzai Agency of FATA swore fealty to Daesh. Although, these commanders were allies of Ahrar they were known to be more sectarian in nature. It was easy for them to join the ultra-sectarian international movement, especially at a time when their parent group, the Pakistani Taliban, was facing an internal crisis.
Later it emerged that the Jamaat ul Ahrar leadership was wavering between the Afghan Taliban-Al Qaeda alliance and Daesh. It was difficult for Ahrar to maintain ties with two rivals, Al-Qaeda and Daesh, at the same time, while remaining loyal to the Afghan Taliban.
In the meantime, the Orakzai-based Taliban commanders, by declaring allegiance to Daesh, were also able to capture the title of Khorasan. Previously, Ahrar had reserved the title for itself, claiming to be the first troops of the ‘Islamic State of Khorasan’. They believe that the time has come for the establishment of an ‘Islamic state’ in this region, comprising of parts of Central Asia, Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. ( No Ghazwa - e- Hind here  )
Khorasani aspires to make his group part of a broader Khorasan movement, which is why it is interesting to note that Ahrar has been cautious not to associate itself with one terror group. While it welcomed the establishment of Daesh, it also accepted Ayman al-Zawahiri’s extension of al-Qaeda in South Asia. Ahrar’s acceptance of al-Qaeda in its region could also be due to Asim’s appointment as the head of the new group.
Khorasani’s decision to not join either the AQIS or Daesh has raised its credibility in militant circles as an independent entity. Although, he is still the man most sought out by militant groups to unify them at times of disagreement. Maybe, the Pakis should request Massa to add Khorasani on their drone "hit list"

Ganja Sharif Should Cut Down On His Foreign Travels And Concentrate On His PM Job

Over 400 bureaucrats still await long-delayed promotion !
ISLAMABAD: Amid an inordinate delay in the promotion of over 400 senior bureaucrats, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to consider the recommendations of the Central Selection Board (CSB) to clear the backlog in a few days. The last promotions to top bureaucratic slots were made in May 2015, following which scores of officers superseded by the CSB obtained restraining orders from the courts. The case is still pending adjudication in various tiers of the judiciary.Sources privy to the development said the Prime Minister Office was likely to approve a summary on the promotions in a couple of days. They said the matter was delayed due to the prime minister’s other engagements, including official visits abroad. ( and the Panama mess !)
Moreover, some officers said the PM Office had referred the cases to the Intelligence Bureau (IB) for officers’ security clearance, ( euphemism for loyalty to Ganja Sharif? ) which was taking some time.
In a recent calling attention notice, MNA retired Capt Mohammad Safdar, the prime minister’s son-in-law, criticised the PM Office and particularly PM’s Secretary Fawad Hassan Fawad, for taking decisions regarding the promotion of government officers in grade 20 and above on the basis of his own personal opinion. He suggested that a parliamentary committee be formed to deal with the promotion of officers in grade 20 and above. He said the decisions should be taken on the basis of the officers’ performance and track record.

Pakistan-born author Tarek Fatah targeted at Delhi Urdu festival
Pakistan-born writer Tarek Fatah, now a Canadian citizen, said on Monday he was heckled and attacked by a mob at an Urdu poetry festival in Delhi.Fatah, 67, said even the police sided with the crowd of some 100 frenzied mainly young crowd until a deputy commissioner of police reached the scene and apologised.Fatah, a liberal who is also the founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress, said he had gone on Sunday to Jashn-e-Rekhta at Janpath as a visitor when he suddenly came under attack.
“I am happy as a 67-year-old I was able to confront 20-year-old Urdu jihadists. Hundred howling hyenas let loose on me,” he tweeted.
He said the crowds dubbed him as a “kutta” (dog) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and kept screaming “Death to Tarek Fatah”. All the while, although he was ringed by a hostile mob, Fatah refused to leave.Fatah said he was kicked and attacked from behind by the crowd. The Canadian alleged that instead of protecting him, the police “manhandled me, claiming I was the reason why the crowd was upset and that I should leave the premises”. Fatah has ruffled some feathers of late with his provocative statements against Indian secularists and the pro -Pakistani fifth columnists and the Mullah Brigade still living in India !
Fatah accused the organisers of abandoning him and said he suspected it were they who sent the mob after him.

New Book About Ruttie Jinnah Offers Insight Into Her Troubled Life

The real Mrs Jinnah: New book offers insights into the life of misunderstood, fascinating Ruttie Petit
“What put it into her silly little head to suddenly fall in love with a man old enough to be her father?” mused Sarojini Naidu’s son Jaisoorya, in a letter to his sister Padmaja. He was referring to a scandal that had shaken Bombay’s high society and political circles in 1916, when Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the 40-year-old leader of the All India Muslim League and eventual founder of Pakistan, fell in love with a rich 16-year-old Parsi woman named Ruttie Petit. Truth is that this scum DJinnah took advantage of his family friendship with the Petit family and seduced an innocent young girl for his nefarious needs !

The breadth of Ruttie’s short but incredibly full life, however, cannot be underestimated, which is why Reddy’s painstaking examination of her epistolary friendships is a crucial undertaking. By unearthing details about Ruttie’s idiosyncrasies and making sense of them, this book provides a much-needed window into the life of a misunderstood and fascinating Indian woman.
The Islamic credentials of this so-called "Quaid -e-Azam" was just a sham; by no stretch of the imagination ,can this dog and ham loving person, responsible for so much harm, can be called a "Muslim " ; thankfully , the Paki Aam Abduls are kept in the dark about this personal aspect of his sordid life !

The pakistanis probably executed people from the same tribe as the TTP leadership. They might have identified some of the suicide bombers, and then carry out a genocide on the people from the tribe.

That is how they claim a 100 'terrorists' killed.

This I suspect is another one of the Punbaji army's ongoing pashtoon genocide

Pakistan bowing to Trump-Modi pressure on terrorism, says US President's Indian-American acolyte
WASHINGTON: Pakistan's abrupt defanging of terrorist leader Hafiz Saeed is a result of behind the scenes effort by the Trump administration led by a "new and tough sheriff in town" and a "skilled and receptive partner" in New Delhi who, together form a "mortal threat to Islamist terrorism everywhere," US President Donald Trump's Indian-American acolyte Shalabh Kumar has said.

"Test Tube Babies" And Paki Sharia Law .

Federal Shariat Court declares test tube babies legal
ISLAMABAD:
The Federal Shariat Court (FSC) validated on Tuesday the option of using ‘test tube baby’ method for conceiving babies. In its verdict, the court declared “if a baby is born through mechanical/medical process where the sperm belongs to the actual father and the egg to the actual mother and the child is born by the actual mother…the procedure would be legal and lawful”.It clarified, however, that in all other cases, “the surrogacy procedure would be unlawful and against the injunctions of Quran and Sunnah”. If not, I.O.W. the "produced offspring" would be considered a Kaffir and treated like a pariah for the rest of his life , with no chance of going on hajj, no chance of marrying a Muslim etc etc
A full bench of the FSC comprising Chief Justice Riaz Ahmad Khan, Justice Allama Dr Fida Muhammad Khan and Justice Zahoor Ahmed Shahwani, in exercise of jurisdiction under Article 203-D of the Constitution examined the issue of surrogacy in light of Islamic injunctions. Is the "respected Allama" a member of the Islamic Brigade; should not Fazl and Qazi be "on the bench" when it comes to dealing in matters Islamic :D
The court directed for appropriate amendments in Section 2 of the Contract Act, 1872 ( are they living in the 21st century or are they still stuck in the so-called golden age of Malsi  ) and in Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), calling for suggestions in this regard by August 15, 2017
There shall be punishments for the couple which arranges a surrogate, the surrogate herself, as well as the doctor who maintains the sperm bank or egg bank, and those who carry on the surrogacy procedure, the court said. License of any doctor involved in the un-Islamic procedure of surrogacy should also be cancelled, the FSC ordered. In 2013, the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Pakistan said test tube babies were allowed in Islam but with certain conditions.
Enquiring readers would like to know if "Saudi Mullahs" were "consulted" on this very important "Islamic matter"

Paki Racial Profiling Targeting Pushtuns !

Punjab police’s blatant racial profiling
LAHORE: In a clear display of racial bias, citizens have been asked to report any persons of Pashtun descent to the Punjab police as part of an ongoing crackdown launched against terrorists in the province after the February 13 Mall Road bombing.Claiming that people belonging to the Pashtun ethnicity are gathering intelligence for terrorist outfits in disguise, the police have warned the public regarding the dangers posed by these ‘suspicious’ characters.
According to the IGP office, the government had directed the Punjab Police to begin an awareness campaign asking the public to report any suspicious persons or activities. The move had been an attempt to utilise public intelligence on the ground to counter possible terrorist threats. However the campaign has fallen through in a whirlwind of ethnic discrimination with the police force singling out Pashtuns by asking people to keep close tabs on them. Where is the pseudo Pashtun, Imran Khan in all of this; is he not complaining at this blatant targeting of his ethnic brothers
The IGP office spokesperson, when speaking to Pakistan Today, has claimed that no specific person, group or ethnicity had been highlighted in their directive which simply asked for increased vigilance through public monitoring. However, upon further inquiry, he did admit that district police departments had, indeed, been asked to have “these people [Pashtuns] checked”.
An example of the Punjab Police’s anti-Pashtun rhetoric was seen in a popularly circulated pamphlet issued by the Mandi Bahaudin police department. The circular asks the public to be extra vigilant and to keep an eye on any persons “appearing to be of Pashtun or Afghan heritage.” It goes on to describe how these suspicious characters could be found working as “tea & dry fruit vendors, and as salesman of children’s toys or household items.”

PRO Mandi Bahaudin, Abdul Rauf, elaborated on the circular saying the directive to act against Pashtuns had come from the Punjab government. He further said that a threat alert had alerted them to possible Pasthun terrorists gathering information for banned outfits whilst disguised as everyday roadside vendors or salesman. He said that the move had been pushed to the extent that announcements had been made in mosques asking people to stay alert regarding any suspicious activity coming from Pashtun quarters. While he said he was not at liberty to give details regarding the success of the campaign, the officer did say the move has “come to fruition already.” The day is not too far away, when the "only Pakis" left in Pakistan, will be Pakjabis !

The gates of hell
Cyril Almeida — Updated 2 days ago

BUT why has it happened? They’re bellowing at Afghanistan, screaming blame and abuse.

But the louder they yell, the more insistent the question: how have they managed to get it so wrong?

Let’s talk about the boys a bit.

The wave, this fresh orgy of violence, is rooted in Afghanistan. There’s no real reason to doubt that.

The chaps claiming responsibility haven’t hid their general location and the boys, for all the dabbling in manipulation, tend to build their decisive tales around a kernel of truth.

But parse the story a bit.

There’s essentially two parts to it: the chaps behind the attacks are Afghan-based and they’re supported and facilitated by the Afghan state.

The first part is troubling enough. Afghan-based or Pak-based, the sweep of the violence necessarily suggests a network revived.

Culminating — or has it? — with the wretchedness at the shrine, the rat-a-tat of the violence necessarily implies failure.

One, yes; two, OK; three, maybe; four, why? The almost military precision of the strikes makes it worse — we didn’t know a wave was coming and we were powerless to stop it.

It’s the second part of the story though where things get really ugly.

Afghan-based and Afghan-coordinated — how in the hell did we miss that?

A bunch of determined militants can probably perform the marriage between suicide vest and bomber without necessarily getting detected.
This mess we’re in now, this business of having a rival in Kabul instead of an ally — we helped make it happen.

But they apparently get foreign-state assistance and facilitation, and our state couldn’t figure out what was on its way towards us?

The louder the yelling, the harsher the bellowing, you can guess there’s something else going on too. In the long war, among the many casualties, the truth may be the only repeat victim.

We missed a wave whose provenance we knew — if the boys weren’t thundering, and so visibly, on the warpath, awkward, uncomfortable questions would bubble to the surface.

Why is this happening now?

Just recently we were strutting around, smug that we are part of a new power troika on Afghanistan — us, the Russians and the Chinese.

A troika of pragmatists, unlike the Americans and the Afghan government, with their woolly ideas of peace and governance.

A clever tale, but with shaky foundations. The Ghani opening had once been real and it was eventually spurned by us. This mess we’re in now, this business of having a rival in Kabul instead of an ally — we helped make it happen.

There’s no good reason why we did it, why we didn’t seize what could have been a historic opportunity. No reason other than our inability to shut the door on the past.

The smugness abroad was complemented by a bungling at home.

The last stretch of Raheel and co was mired in uncertainty and then spilled into turmoil.

What was only whispered then is now an open secret: Raheel thought he had several good years left and didn’t want to go home.

An extension was wanted, but it was wanted in a way that fit the self-crafted legend of the chief: a selfless decision prompted by the government’s entreaties.

But Nawaz delayed and eventually demurred. The final weeks were chaotic.

From it emerged a new chief who had neither been groomed nor favoured by his predecessor. He has, though, benefited from a favour Raheel inadvertently did him: a delay in an expected late-term shuffle.

Out have been swept many from the Raheel era and in has come a new cohort, with several getting unexpected posts and promotions.

All of this to say, did the boys mess up because they were distracted?

A late-term chief and his team heavily invested in politics transitioning to a newly installed chief with a team that didn’t expect to be there — there’s much that could go wrong.

Like missing a wave of violence that the boys ought to have seen coming.

Maybe the raging against Afghanistan is genuine. But its utility is definitely suspect and its potential impact deeply problematic.

On utility, flip the perspective around: you’re sitting in Kabul and seeing the Pakistan beast roar after being prodded.

Bloody good, you’re thinking, it worked. We should try more of the same.

But you — with the Afghan perspective — are doing the prodding to achieve something; to get Pakistan to put pressure on the Afghan Taliban.

On that Pakistan isn’t budging. It’s part of this fancy new troika that’s exploring alternative scenarios on Afghanistan.

So it’s an impasse — again. Except now at an elevated level of conflict: Afghanistan prods us, we prod Afghanistan.

And we’ve just shown them that we can miss, in the boys’ own telling, a state-sponsored wave.

On impact, the Afghanistan, Afghanistan, Afghanistan raging is threatening to fracture the fragile public consensus against the militants.

Once again, militants are mere pawns of perfidious neighbours instead of an autonomous evil that threatens the nation from within.

Once again, the real problem is not the militants and their malignant agenda, but the nefarious lot backing them.

The unthinking fracturing of public consensus is being wrought at a particularly dangerous moment.

The militants waging war on us are evolving to a uniquely dire point for the country’s fault lines.

Kill an unfathomable number of kids and you’ll unite Pakistanis. That was APS.

Kill a bunch of Sufis, Shias and Christians and you’re probing deep into the wounds and unmentioned schisms that lace this land.

Yelling Afghanistan, Afghanistan, Afghanistan deflects blame. But it may also help open the very gates to hell.

In Pakistan, tolerant Islamic voices are being silenced - William Dalrymple
Last week, only three days after a suicide bomb went off in Lahore, an Islamic State supporter struck a crowd of Sufi dancers celebrating in the great Pakistani shrine of Sehwan Sharif. The attack, which killed almost 90, showed the ability of radical Islamists to silence moderate and tolerant voices in the Islamic world. There are no moderate and tolerant voices in the Islamic world.
If only the Pakistani government could finance schools that taught respect for the country’s own indigenous and syncretic religious traditions, rather than buying fleets of American F-16 fighters and leaving education to the Saudis. Instead, Pakistan is increasingly coming to resemble a tragic clone of pre-9/11 Taliban Afghanistan – a place where violent radicals are welcomed with open arms, where groups like Isis are rapidly gaining influence, and where moderate Muslims and religious minorities are subject to persecution and murder. If only the Pakistani government could finance schools that taught respect for the country’s own indigenous and syncretic religious traditions, - These syncretic religious traditions have been destroyed by the syncretic religious traditions of Islam - rather than buying fleets of American F-16 fighters and leaving education to the Saudis. FWIW Indian contracts act is also dated 1872. The act was passed by British and have continued on with amendments from time to time I guess.

Waiting for Saladin
IRFAN HUSAIN — UPDATED Jan 14, 2017
irfan.husain@gmail.com
I HAVE a confession to make: in all my travels, Saudi Arabia has never figured on my itinerary.

And with good reason. Why would I go to a country that deliberately destroys its historical heritage, flogs and beheads people, and treats foreign workers worse than slaves? With so many pleasant places to choose from, Jeddah and Riyadh are very low down the list.

But if retired general Raheel Sharif chooses to spend his twilight years there, who am I to object? Frankly, his post-retirement plans don’t interest me much. As far as I’m concerned, he did a good job as army chief, and has called it quits on the appointed day. Time to move on.

To judge from all the hysteria about his reported move to Saudi Arabia, one would think he’s stabbed us in the back. But hey, folks, lots of people get jobs abroad and move. In fact, most Pakistanis would jump at the opportunity to make some serious bucks overseas, even if it is in a cultural wasteland.

So why so much angst over Raheel Sharif’s new job? Some commentators and regulars on social media have made the point that, as a retiring full general, he doesn’t lack for money or property. But when has that ever stopped the well-off from wanting more?

Then there’s the chorus complaining that the 34-nation military alliance he is supposed to lead exists only in the figment of the Saudi royal family’s imagination. So? Surely our retired hero is due some rest and recreation: why should we object if he gets paid a vast amount?

I suspect the real reason so many people are worked up is that they had projected their image of a national saviour on Sharif, and are now shattered at his decision to take the familiar route to the Oily Land. Our history is littered with figures we built up into facsimiles of Saladin, only to be disappointed when they came crashing down to earth. :rotfl:

Why so much angst over Raheel Sharif’s new job?
This perpetual search for a saviour who would solve our problems has been a regular refrain, with dictators being welcomed, only to be exposed for the ambitious, ruthless men they really were. Currently, millions have pinned their hopes on Imran Khan. While wishing them luck, I would only point out that changing institutions and attitudes is very hard work, and doesn’t happen overnight.

Even bloody revolutions are no panaceas. Clearly, those who, until recently, were urging Raheel Sharif to take over have not learned from our coup-littered history. To his credit, Raheel Sharif spurned the invitation as he probably knew that he had no answers for all that ails the country.

In Pakistan, institutions have been so enfeebled by years of misrule that it is relatively easy for a dictator to bend them to his will. The higher judiciary might be showing its teeth now, but for decades, it was the main facilitator for military rulers. The bureaucracy was more than happy to salute the new dispensation, and the media was easily subdued.

With this background, Raheel Sharif’s many fans were rooting for him to either get an extension, or simply take over. I wonder what has happened to the shadowy organisation that pasted the general’s face on walls from Karachi to the Khyber Pass. I do know that TV chat show hosts and columnists who were urging Sharif to stay are now having to eat humble pie. Chilli sauce, anyone?

But ultimately, this search for a messiah says more about us than it does about Raheel Sharif. After all, if he has accepted the job, he would be doing what most in his position would have: take whatever is coming his way.

Many pundits have superimposed a regional/sectarian view on to his future role as a generalissimo on the Saudi payroll. The Saudi-Iranian proxy war has been invoked, and Pakistan’s own Shia-Sunni tensions have been made part of this discourse. Saudi Arabia’s vicious bombing of Yemen has been advanced as yet another reason for him to refuse the role of commander of the ghost battalions of the Sunni coalition.

But since when have mercenaries questioned the cause they are paid to fight for? When Saudi Arabia announced the formation of a 34-nation coalition, some of the member states — Pakistan included — expressed their ignorance of the honour conferred on them by Riyadh. After this, the so-called alliance practically disappeared from the scene until Raheel Sharif’s retirement.

I suppose our ex-army chief will first have to go around a reluctant Muslim world to drum up support for the hare-brained scheme. And no doubt there will be a Saudi princeling in the background with an open chequebook.

Here’s when he will learn the Saudi way of fighting wars. And as he recedes into a well-paid obscurity, his days of being a hero to the Pakistani people will quickly fade away.

Bottom of the class
IRFAN HUSAIN — PUBLISHED Jan 28, 2017

THREE months ago, when I accepted an invitation to join a panel discussion organised by London’s Democracy Forum, I had no idea it was a very pro-India outfit.

The subject was — what else? — terrorism in Pakistan. But when I saw Dr Christine Fair’s name on the list of panellists, I had a fair idea of what to expect. An associate professor at Washington’s Georgetown University, she has made a name for herself for her sharp critique of the Pakistan Army and our intelligence agencies, and their allegedly active support for jihadi militants.

Some of us in Pakistan have argued along the same lines, but Dr Fair has consistently got under the establishment’s skin as she publishes in the United States, and often speaks at high- level forums there. In a recent article by her (‘Pakistan’s unending war on civil society’ in the webzine ‘War on the Rocks’) she wrote that the security apparatus provides state support to militant groups banned by the UN, the US and others.

Our politicians are not known for decisive action.
“The US needs to hold this state accountable. It should apply sanctions, deny security assistance payments, and limit the provision of military equipment and training … while offering Islamabad no advantages in its incessant warmongering towards India,” she wrote.

Being familiar with Dr Fair’s views, I found little that was new in her tirade delivered via Skype. But there was one section of her talk made me sit up and take notice: basically, she made the point that the Pakistani state had failed to act seriously against the terrorist threat because few of the victims were from the elites.

I have often wondered why successive governments have been so slack in cracking down on the jihadi militias that have been rampaging on our soil for decades now. I know one reason is the support many of them receive from our intelligence agencies. But why have civilian leaders not acted against the hard-line madressahs, or stopped hate speech in mosques and TV chat shows, or, indeed, cleaned our school and college curricula of their extremist content?

It’s true that our politicians are not known for decisive action, just as our bureaucracy has not set any records for rapid implementation. But had a majority of the 60,000 or so of the victims of terrorism been members of the upper echelons of society, I’m sure the state’s response would have been very different.

As an example, look at what happened in the aftermath of the two attempts on Musharraf’s life in December 2003: the suspects were rapidly tried, found guilty and executed. And it took a major Taliban attack on a Peshawar army school to get a consensus on military action, and the approval of the National Action Plan. Had the over 140 victims been from a Peshawar slum, I doubt very much that such a determined response would have been crafted by our leadership.

This attitude merely reflects other aspects of life in Pakistan. Our state hospitals and schools are in a shambles because our elites use private facilities. Quacks and madressahs thrive in the vacuum created by the state’s abdication of its responsibilities. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that an educated and healthy population is essential for any nation’s progress.

Yet we continue to ignore these basic needs because our children don’t have to go to schools where little education is imparted. Or, if they are sick, don’t have to go to hospitals where they would have to wait endlessly to receive third-rate care.

It’s the same depressing story for clean drinking water and sanitation. Again, these problems don’t exist for our entitled ruling classes. Bottled water and tankers for the lawns and swimming pools of the rich are the order of the day. And yet, waterborne diseases and poor sanitation account for the vast majority of diseases afflicting millions of Pakistanis.

Everybody is aware of these issues, and yet government after government has refused to tackle them. Punjab has done a bit better than the other provinces, but the Sharif family’s preoccupation with their ‘mega projects’ has diverted attention and resources from more pressing needs.

One excuse is that the security forces have siphoned off a large chunk of the funds available, leaving little for the citizenry. While this may be true, it is not the whole truth: year after year, millions of rupees allocated to education and health in the budget are surrendered because our bureaucracy was unable to spend them within the financial year.

The reality is that the military, the bureaucracy, the political class, feudals and businessmen all grab the state’s resources and deprive the poor of their share. As long as this loot continues, expect to see Pakistan at the bottom of the table for human development.

Pakistan Army on Wednesday launched 'Operation Radd-ul-Fasaad' across the country, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations, the army's media wing.
Radd-ul-Fasaad — which translates roughly to 'elimination of discord' — aims at indiscriminately eliminating the "residual/latent threat of terrorism", consolidating the gains made in other military operations, and further ensuring the security of Pakistan's borders, read the statement.

In most countries army is for fighting outside the country. But In Pak it is used running the country and fighting its own people

J &K 'rights breaches': EU panel supports India
NEW DELHI: Human rights 'breaches' in Jammu & Kashmir should be settled through domestic Indian institutions, said David McAllister, who is leading a delegation of MEPs from European parliament's powerful foreign affairs committee. "We understand this is a sensitive issue," he said, marking a significant change from traditional EU position of moralizing to India on human rights issues.

McAllister leads a group of four MEPs to India where they met union ministers, national security adviser Ajit Doval, vice chairman of NITI Aayog Arvind Panagariya and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan among others. This is the second among three successive groups from the EU to engage with India in preparation for the next EU-India summit expected to be held later this year in New Delhi. The committee is charged with bringing out a report on EU-India relations which will cover everything from defense and security to human rights in time for the summit.

The group consisting of Zeljana Zovko (Croatia), Cristian Dan Preda (Romania), David McAllister (Germany) and Urmas Paet (Estonia) had initially included Amjad Bashir, Pakistan-origin British MEP from Yorkshire, and a well-known critic of India. However, while four of the EU delegation arrived in New Delhi, Bashir was reportedly denied a visa by the Indian government. Speaking to Pakistani media, Bashir said "I alone find myself still without the necessary piece of paper. Our political group has taken the matter up with the parliament's authorities. ... There has not been a word of official explanation from the Indian authorities, but through unofficial channels I have been told it is because of my stance on Kashmir.."

EU's decision to come without Bashir, and to take a more "understanding view of J&K could impact positively EU-India relations. In the past, India has felt EU has taken Pakistan's side on this issue. For the past year, Pakistan has embarked on a diplomatic offensive to rally world opinion against India on J&K.

I am so bored, because everyday in every Pak rag, it seems all the Pak so-called analysts are harping on the same talking points. However, I got quite a chuckle from this opinion piece.

The scope and scale of the author's stupidity and idiocy are staggering though, out of fairness to him, I am sure the ISPR was the ghost-writer of this article.

What had me chuckling, beyond the same-old wornout statements: Pak is the biggest victim of terror, Indian and Afg are responsible for all terror in Pak, Fauj is good etc, was his use of high-fallutin' strategic language (Kinetic Ops, nonKinetic Ops) and especially applying macroeconomic theory to terrorism. So now, not only are there good terrorists and bad terrorists, there are also supply-side terrorists and demand-side terrorists. LMAO. :rotfl:

For saying Hafiz Saeed is threat to country, Pakistan's defence minister is being called 'India's mouthpiece'
NEW DELHI: A day after he said that terrorist Hafiz Saeed is a threat to his country, Pakistan's defence minister is being called "India's mouthpiece" by a variety of political and religious leaders there who believe Saeed "is a patriotic leader", reports The News International.
The minister, Khwaja Asif, said yesterday that Saeed, the mastermind of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, " pose(s) a serious threat to society and has been arrested in the larger national interest+ ." Saeed was put under house arrest on January 30 and was named under Pakistan's terror act on Saturday.
Asif's statement "makes him sound like he's India's defence minister, not Pakistan's, said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Mahmoodur Rasheed, even as he condemned the statement against Saeed. Rasheed said Islamabad has adopted "a defensive policy as far as India and the US were concerned," The News International reported. PTI is the party founded by cricketer-turned politician Imran Khan.
And Defence of Pakistan Council chairman Maulana Samiul Haq said the defence minister - who made the comment while in Germany - "should have "raised the issue of atrocities being committed by the Indian Army in Kashmir." The Defense Minister ( who has a very "loose mouth") would not have the "guts" to make this kind of statement on the soil of Pakistan .
None of this is likely to please Saeed who in December urged the Pakistan government to not make friendly overtures to India.
"The Pakistani government should not look towards India's friendship. Blood is being shed in Kashmir. Therefore, it is Pakistani government's responsibility to solve their problems," he said, PTI reported.
