I did some Google reading. It seems that 70-90% Mosul is already in the hands of Iraqis and their getting bogged down may be incorrect. It's just a matter of last push. Thereafter Iraqis will have to get rid of Kurds and USA.

and the cia trained new syrian army has staged out of jordan to advance across uncontested desert south and east of palmyra to capture the T3 pumping station which is so desolate it makes palmyra and its famous T4 pumping statiion+airbase looks like manhattan. clearly the idea is to block the most direct route from palmyra to deZ which avoids the ISIS stronghold of sukhanah.
various arab tribes in DeZ region have been given their bags of gold to join the SDF and similarly the iraqi tribes in anbar are being goaded to attack the ISIS in al-qaim and al-bukamal on the border to complete the "great wall"

If fsa wins the race..some are jhadis hiding under cloak of nato certification...rest are sunni tribeal militias. A nato owned sunni bantustan in eastern syria to export problems in all directions to shia countries....contiguous border with iraq and jordan and close through empty desert to north saudi

That must be usa plan..to cut syria from iraq with a kurdish proto state and a sunni caliphate tied to jordan

Syria and Iraq share a long border. Most of it is inhospitable desert with hardly any human settlement. It will be 24/7/365 project for khan to prop up its sunni puppet along the border. Kurdistan towards north may have better chances but I can see Iraq, Assad and Kurds coming to some form of agreement to keep ISIS and Turkey at bay.

Yemenis face ‘life & death choice’ of treating sick children or feeding healthy ones – UNICEF to RT
‘As the battle in Yemen rages on, many parents are faced with the tough choice of treating a sick child or feeding a healthy one, a UNICEF representative told RT, following the tragic death of a seven-year-old who died of disease and malnutrition.Children are paying an extremely high price in war-torn Yemen, with 90 percent in desperate need of humanitarian care, according to UNICEF. Almost half a million are at risk of starvation.
One of the latest tragedies to come out of the country is the death of seven-year-old Jamila Ali Abdu, who died of malnutrition after suffering from worms for two years.’ And the Saudi cobbled "Muslim NATO" force is led by Ex. Pakistan COAS - Gen Raheel Sharif !

Al masdar

After the implementation of safe zones in rebel-held regions of Syria, thousands of SAA soldiers have headed to Palmyra to spearhead an offensive led by Suheil Al-Hassan, ultimately looking to lift the long-standing siege of Deir Ezzor.

Nevertheless, this large-scale military campaign requires government forces to advance some 155 kilometers through sparsely populated ISIS-held territory.

Syrian Army eyes strategic airbase in east Aleppo
By Leith Fadel - 08/05/20170

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:00 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched an important operation on Sunday that targeted the Islamic State’s (ISIL) remaining positions in the eastern countryside of the Aleppo Governorate.

Led by their elite Tiger Forces, the Syrian Arab Army has set their sights on the strategic Jirah Military Airport, which is located directly north of the Maskanah Plain.

Should the Syrian Arab Army take control of the Jirah Airbase, they will be in position to not only secure the Deir Hafer Plain, but also, enter the Maskanah Plain for the first time in four years

Krump to arm the Turds!..Oops! Sorry,Trump to arm the Kurds against Turkey's wishes.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world ... 27031.html
Donald Trump to arm Syrian Kurds against Isis despite Turkish opposition
Andrew Buncombe New York

Turkey considers the Kurds to be part of a terror group AP
The Trump administration is to directly provide arms to Syrian Kurds to help in the fight against Isis - a move that is certain to anger regional ally Turkey.

Reports said the president had approached the plan to provide heavy weapons to the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, as part of a plan to retake Raqqa, the Syrian city that is Isis’s defacto capital.

The US sees the Kurds as its most effective battlefield proxy in the fight against Isis in northern and eastern Syria. But Turkey says the group is an extension of an organisation operating inside its border which it considers a terror group.

The White House meeting w/ Erdogan is designed to soften the blow and reaffirm the alliance, while underscoring YPG is tactical partnership
11:03 PM - 9 May 2017

The Associated Press said the administration was likely to provide 120mm mortars, machines guns, ammunition and light armoured vehicles. It is not expected to provide artillery or surface-to-air missiles.

The news agency said US officials including Gen Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have met repeatedly with Turkish officials to try to work out an arrangement for the Raqqa assault that would be acceptable to Ankara. The Turks have insisted that the Syrian Kurds be excluded from that operation, but US officials said there was no real alternative.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is to visit Mr Trump in Washington next week. An Erdogan adviser, Ibrahim Kalin, has met with Thomas Shannon, a senior official at the State Department.

In Denmark, Defence Secretary Jim Mattis said he had useful discussions with Turkey and described the two countries as working out differences over a US alliance with Syrian Kurds in fighting Isis militants.
“That's not to say we all walk into the room with exactly the same appreciation of the problem or the path forward,” said Mr Mattis, after attending a meeting of more than a dozen countries fighting Isis.

“We're going to sort it out. We’ll figure out how we're going to do it.”

Tensions escalated last month when Turkey conducted airstrikes on Kurdish bases in Syria and Iraq. The Turkish military said it killed at least 90 militants and wounded scores.

Turkey has threatened to step up military action against Syrian Kurdish fighters allied with the United States in response to the Trump administration’s decision to directly arm the Kurds for an assault on the Syrian city of Raqqa, Turkish officials said.
Kurds have probably chosen US support over Russian support because Russia might have insisted on the Kurds having some understanding with Assad.
Now Us can either lose face and credibility with the kurds or upset Turkey.

Would Assad really be willing to give up Idlib and Daraa provinces for good, I wonder? Those are very significant cities and provinces; I'd have thought handing them over would be a deal breaker for Assad and even the Russians as it leaves Syria a very incomplete rump state without a future. Russia does need some reassurance Syria will still exist in 10 years on account of Tartus and their other bases there.

Syria minus Daraa and Idlib doesn't strike me as much of a state at all. More like a dying patient on life support.

Whispers speak of russia unwilling to support iran and assad on idlib offensive. The pop has been churned...normal people pushed out..radicalized hordes from all corners moved in plus uighurs and foreign jihadis. Its a hornets nest.

Perhaps russia has no stomach to call turkeys bluff on idlib. The bab al hawa border crossing in the main jihadi tunnel to turkish support.

^That should make things easier. Do a Nanking, scorch earth as no civilians to worry about. These are the areas that would form agricultural backbone.
They cannot let it go, it is not like rebels would make peaceful neighbors. Russia might be unwilling but she has no choice IMO.

True. Hope sense prevails. The al ghab plain well watered and 70km is a good agricultural resource and the countryside is good farming.

There are no major city but lot of small towns like hama countryside. Each will have to be wrested.

Even if they take 75% of idlib and clean up west aleppo the jihadis will have some hilly places up north like jisr al shughour and be less of a threat.

But assad might look to take charge of oil rich palmyra homs and deir azzor first with his limited resources. They have barely enough for 1 major push at a time. For now its east from palmyra

Tactical Superiority: How 16 Russian Special Forces Took Out 300 Terrorists

https://sputniknews.com/world/201705111 ... errorists/

A group of officers from the Russian Defense Ministry's Special Operations Forces was decorated with medals for showing unprecedented courage in the fight against terrorists in Syria; the decree to this effect was earlier issued by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During an award ceremony, a commander of the group who was awarded a Gold Star and named a Hero of the Russian Federation said that they were part of a 16-strong Russian military unit which managed to successfully repulse attacks conducted by 300 jihadists.

"We avoided casualties due to good shelter and location. Besides, we had a good advantage in terms of armament and equipment, including thermal imaging sights. All this added to our success," the commander said.

Throughout the civil war in Syria, government troops have fought numerous opposition groups and terrorist organizations such as Daesh, which is outlawed in Russia; the conflict has lasted about six years.

In March 2017, Lt. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, the chief of the Russian General Staff Main Operational Directorate, said that Russia's Aerospace Forces and Special Operations Forces played a key role in decimating Daesh terrorists in the battle for the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra.

hezbollah and the palestini refugee liwa al quds were said to be among the most dedicated fighters in aleppo.

___
DAMASCUS, SYRIA (3:00 P.M.) – On Thursday morning, over a hundred Hezbollah fighters left Aleppo in a handful of buses, traveling along the Khanasser highway en route to Homs.

Upon arrival in central Syria, the elite Lebanese fighters will reinforce the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) 5th Legion, 60th Brigade of the 11th Armored Division, 67th Brigade of the 18th Tank Division, National Defence Forces (NDF) and the Al-Badia Commandos Regiment, the latter of which is commanded by Sheikh Sulaiman Al Shawwakh.

The seasoned paramilitary reinforcements will join forces with a Hezbollah contingent already deployed on the axis, active on both the eastern Homs and Palmyra fronts.

It seems the desert hawks who are a private army of sorts funded by a billionaire brother duo were doing bits of smuggling and extortion on the side...some of their units seem like disbanded and merged into ndf or regular army. The repub guard and tiger forces not on great terms with them so never seen together. Presently holding static front in latakia..but they are well funded and have a lot of vehicles like a mech regiment

Assads current move to advance down damascus baghdad highway to al tanf border jn to curtail adventures of us proxies might see them back in favour...65km has been taken under control by saa on the highway south of palmyra front but still 100k to border. Being desert hawks they will do well in the desert maybe.
