Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
The WaPo map doesn't make sense. The site of explosion would be far from the injuries.
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
One can't even make such thing up.. the paki (foreign minister's statement) to "condemn blast" ...
And .. also (No I am not making it up)
The blast has caused damage to the residences of some Pakistani diplomats and staff, living in the close vicinity, and inflicted minor injuries to some,
And .. also (No I am not making it up)
(All that before "The people and Government of Pakistan extend their heartfelt sympathies.. yada yada.."Pakistan being a victim of terrorism understands the pain and agony that such incidents inflict upon the people and society.
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
AmberG, Some are suggesting its Iran Embassy that was the real target and pictures on Twitter of the blast crater.
Parking the vehicle near German Embassy would give plausible deniability yet damage the Iran Embassy. Need to find from the crater picture if it was closer to Iran Embassy or German Embassy.
WaPo image also shows that Iran and Turkey embassies are close together.
I am now inclined to think its the Iran Embassy as the target and rest are collateral.
NYT has better coverage.
Looks like German Embassy was the target based on proximity. OTH the truck might not have access to Iranian embassy.
So was it really a message to Ghani than these diplomats?
Also 1500 kg explosives in the sewer truck.

If its Haqqani Network it could be Indian Embassy.

So German Embassy happened to be nearby. The real target could be something else.
Afghanistan By TOLOnews.com TODAY - 9:43 PM - Edited: TODAY - 10:57 PM
Officials Say 1,500kgs Of Explosives Used In Kabul Truck Bomb
Death toll rises to more than 80 in the deadly truck bombing that ripped through the heart of Kabul early Wednesday morning.
On the fifth day of Ramadan, a sacred month of Muslims around the world, Kabul witnessed a massive explosion which claimed more than 80 lives and wounded more than 400 people – mostly civilians including women and media workers.
Sources said a truck used to empty sewerage tanks had been loaded with 1,500 kgs of explosives.
The incident took place at 8:22am Kabul time in front of the German Embassy and Roshan telecommunications company in Kabul.
The Presidential Palace said in a statement on Wednesday evening that President Ashraf Ghani organized an emergency cabinet session where he directed security institutions to assess the incident and ramp up efforts to ensure the safety of Kabul residents.
He also directed relevant organizations to share information about the incident with the people.
Ghani directed the urban development minister and the Kabul municipality to repair the damaged areas as soon as possible.
Reporting from the blast site 10 hours after the incident, TOLOnews’ Karim Amini said the area had been largely destroyed as a result of the explosion.
Major damage has been inflicted to Roshan Telecommunication Company, the German Embassy, Azizi Bank and a media outlet – all located in the diplomatic district of Kabul – between Zanbaq Circle and 15th Street of Wazir Akbar Khan in Kabul’s PD10.
The transferring of victims to hospitals continued for more than three hours, Karim Amini said.
The blast meanwhile displaced many T-walls which were erected to protect the entrance to the Green Zone in Street 17 of Wazir Akbar Khan.
The explosives-laden truck reportedly tried to enter the Green Zone which houses embassies and other diplomatic offices and residences and the Resolute Support mission compound.
According to Karim Amini, the truck was stopped by security personnel at a checkpoint and when the driver was questioned, he detonated the explosives.
The blast created a huge crater in the road similar to a previous explosion in Kabul including Shah Shaheed blast that claimed dozens of lives.
Meanwhile, reporting from Wazir Akbar Khan Hospital, in Kabl’s PD10, TOLOnews’ Anisa Shaheed said many of the blast victims were taken to the hospital including 50 bodies.
She said 20 out of 50 bodies were not recognizable due to burns they suffered in the explosion.
According to her, dozens of families had gathered outside the hospital waiting for news on the condition of their relatives. They criticized government leaders for their inefficiency in terms of preventing such incidents.
Angry crowds had also gathered outside the Emergency Hospital in Shahre Naw in Kabul.
On Wednesday afternoon, a number of Kabul residents also protested close to the scene of the explosion and called for the resignation of the National Unity Government leaders – President Ashraf Ghani and CEO Abdullah Abdullah.
Wednesday’s attack garnered widespread condemnation from inside the country and abroad.
If its Haqqani Network it could be Indian Embassy.
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
The check point was next to the gate of the German embassy. Right across the street is an offsite location used by the US embassy and stations NATO and US troops.
11 US Citizens are injured.
A total of 90 are dead so far, more than 400 are killed.
The bomb was 100% headed to the Indian embassy !
It was approx 80-90m from the German embassy gate? Can't be sure, looking at maps and videos / images, and about 225-250m from the beginning of the Indian embassy wall
approx location: Wazir Akbar Khan road, near the Y junction. 34°31'52.56"N, 69°10'43.67"E

This location of India's embassy is not correct. It is an old location.
The embassy was moved to a more secure location inside the green zone.
The Pakistan embassy marking right next to the new Indian embassy has also been moved in the post explosion image you posted.
(Maybe the Indian embassy is using the Pakistan Embassy as their Embassy Pakistan)

Afghanistan has gone a step beyond blaming the Mohammadden Terrorism Fomenting Islamic Republic of Pakistan located Haqqani Group for the Ramadan aka Ramzan month Green on Green Intra-Mohammadden suicide VBIED bombing in Kabul that killed 90. Afghanistan is now also blaming the the notorious Mohammadden Terrorism Fomenting Intelligence arm of the Uniformed Jihadi’s of the Punjabi Dominated Army of the Mohammadden Terrorism Fomenting Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Inter Services Intelligence Directorate aka ISID aka ISI for the Ramadan aka Ramzan month Kabul suicide VBIED bombing that killed 90.

I looked at pictures and videos of the blast site and estimated the location of the blast on google maps
Turns out, I was correct.
AmberG just posted the satellite pic of the blast site - before & after
Pakistan needs to be dealt with
It really could be a JDAM next!

Ghani all but named ISI (without naming Pakistan) in his message. ..
Another thing, per NY Times The German Embassy officials were lucky that -- said employees had retreated deeper into the compound after an earlier warning of a threat against them
Will be interesting to know the nature of prior warning/intelligence report -- and if that was shared with India and others..

if the consulates move all personnel into underground rooms protected by a strong door, i feel they will be relatively safe from any VBIED attack as blast will travel above ground. thats the whole idea of hiding in a trench or foxhole...even a huge blast nearby wont get to people.
perhaps they have in part already done so and the buildings above are for ceremonies and show.

Pakistan fears Indian influence in Afghanistan: US spy chiefs

Pakistan is concerned about international isolation and sees its position through the prism of India's rising status, including New Delhi's expanded foreign outreach and deepening ties to the US," said National Intelligence Director Dan Coats
"Pakistan will likely turn to China to offset its isolation, empowering a relationship that will help Beijing to project influence in the Indian Ocean," the Dawn quoted Coats as saying.
"Pakistan desires for Afghanistan some of the same things we want: a safe, secure, stable Afghanistan. One addition -- there is no have heavy Indian influence in Afghanistan," said Defence Intelligence Director Lt General Vincent Stewart.
"They view all of the challenges through the lens of an Indian threat to Pakistan. So they hold in reserve terrorist organisations... so that -- if Afghanistan leans towards India, they will no longer be supportive of an idea of a stable and secure Afghanistan that could undermine Pakistan's interests," the General said.
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
Lets see how afghan intelligence responds to these attacks. If I was one of the residents of lahore/rawalpindi/peshawar etc I would be very careful before visiting densely populated areas such as markets and shopping malls.
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
Afghan intelligence should focus on developing a pool of effective and dedicated bomb makers who can then be deployed in Pakistan as part of undercover cells in various pakistani cities. The focus should be on killing as many elite pakistanis as possible. A suicide bomber corps should also be developed to this effect. Afghans are more optimized to do this compared to us.
Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
The embassies, specially the Indian and US embassy have double walls, they are using ? a metal net to absorb the blast shockwave.
The gates have been blown off in the previous blasts.
The Indian embassy has been bombed in 2008, 2009. This current blast, was targeted at the Indian embassy, no doubt about it.

The head of Tolo News was on NPR Morning Edition and blamed Pakistan.
Immediately the NPR reporter Tom Bowman came along and blamed India for increasing Pakistani fears.
IOW he provides justification for Pakistani attacks in Afghanistan.
He did not say what was India doing that increased the Paki fears.
BTW I see same line of justifying Paki Terror coming from the DIA chief in the hearings.
It is US elite establishment that justifies Pakistani recalcitrance
All those embassies were collateral damage as the checkpoint was near the German Embassy.
The truck driver blew himself when confronted.
What these guys don't understand is Pak just did a dry run of a water tanker based JDAM and they are rushing to give them deniability.

Re: Afghanistan News & Discussion - April 2016
So what type of a bomb was concealed in the sewage tanker? From the before and after pictures one can get an idea of the explosive power. The crater depth is ~13 feet per news reports.
I think we can find on Google the size of explosive to create a 15 ft. crater for above ground explosion.
My gut feeling is they packed a 500/1000 lb. PAF bomb in the sewage tanker and set it off.
Its not a IED. It is a military explosive.
BTW only Paki gutter mind would put a bomb in a sewage tanker truck.

All that means is that there are two proposals for peace:
Indian, where Pakistan is defanged, A'Stan is stable and prosperous.
And , Pakistan, where India is excluded and an A'sthan that is under a thumb and backward. And exploited by China for resources.

For Afghanistan the solution is simple: deny Pakistan its terrorist organization. Coopt the Taliban just like Hekmatyar was coopted. This will lead to stable Afghanistan.
India solution is different as Pakistan will always be fearful and US will feed the fear.
Hence as the sage said "Give Peace a chance destroy Pakistan!"
"Delando est Pakistan!"

It is not coincidental that the fears of pakistan vis-a-vis India and her presence in afghanistan have been articulated by some amreki deep state guy in some rather public hearings.ramana wrote:The head of Tolo News was on NPR Morning Edition and blamed Pakistan.

Trump notwithstanding, the pakis seem to enjoy continued support of the amreki deep state.
The pakis also seem to think that their future has been secured by the hans via the CPEC.
Have they become cocky because all these circumstances are apparently going their way??

This Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart is interesting. I had never heard of him before this report.
Some reading reveals that he is:
1) A marine officer of Jamaican descent.
2) A political general, rather than a military/strategic one. Last overseas deployment was Kuwait-Iraq war 1990-91. Since then, has been in Washington hanging around corridors of power.
Sound familiar?
Remember Al-Quolin Bin Powell al-Trinidadi, who traded in his uniform for the Secretary of State's office and served as a dutiful bag-carrying houseboy for his boss during the run up to Iraq War 2003? He, too, was a very active apologist making excuse after excuse for Pakistan: (they supported the Taliban only to limit Indian influence in Afghanistan, A Q Khan was a one-man proliferation network with no TSPA/ISI involvement, "the past is the past" etc.)
Caribbeans of African descent have a deep-seated hatred of Indians and particularly Hindus. Indians, mostly Hindus, were brought to the Caribbean Islands to live and work alongside the Africans as essentially indentured labour.
The Africans, who had been brought there as slaves, were forced to give up any connection to their native culture or heritage in order to "rise" socially and economically... become more "English" in their behaviour, more "Christian" in their beliefs, surrendering completely to Macaulayization in order to progress beyond the menial labour class. This forced choice was not imposed on the hardworking Indians, who achieved social and economic success in the Caribbean while still remaining true to their Hindu roots and traditions. I strongly believe this is a reason why Caribbean blacks in particular harbor a seething resentment and hatred of Hindus.

Very astute observation.
Will watch out for this behaviour
There is a certain line and colouring of arguments that people in DC like.
Intelligent afsars and intel types will colour their arguments in that tenor.
We wi have to wait until the generation from the 50s-80s retires completely for new realities to sink into the SD.
But by then a rivalry with india may have started

I have had many caribbean/west indian friends from a very early age and have never encountered
any issues, lost touch decades ago
going back to 60s/70s when my father ever ecountered issues with the non melanated his west indian
friends would tell him to sit down take a back seat whilst they put things straight...
my father being a proper "mr singh" and harder than anyone else would decline the offer and do whatever
was necessary
having had very close contacts as above I am still very aware of the Indian attitude to said people.
whilst many non melanated spouses have made it into the family, black people are very unlikely to get in

The term nonmelanated is interesting, along the lines of colourless but not so blatant.
It is a renormalisation of things i.e. a quality deviating from the a norm of being 'not white'.

There is a tug of war in the Afghan government.
It is possible that Ghani might be seeking Paki help against Tajiks/Nato/Abdullah. I really dont understand this love for inclusive govt with necessarily a pashtoon head no matter how incompetent.
The Tajiks and HAzaras have suffered a genocide by Pashtoon majority ruling from Kabul in not so distant past.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/201 ... tan-over-/But on Thursday, Mr. Chaudhry noted that only Afghan intelligence officials had linked the Haqqanis to Wednesday’s blast, adding the government of Afghan President Ashraf Ghani had yet to endorse the findings.

The contrast between the admirable behaviour of cricketing minnow Afghanistan Cricket Board with the pathetic behaviour of our own cricketing behemoth Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who persist in seeking to play bilateral cricket with the Mohammadden Terrorism Fomenting Islamic Republic of Pakistan despite repeated acts of cross border Mohammadden Terrorism, cannot be starker (Sports minister Vijay Goel slams BCCI for meeting PCB officials in Dubai).
Weblink:Official statement from the Afghanistan Cricket Board about today's tragic attack in Kabul.
The ACB administration would like to offer its prayers and thoughts to the victims of today's attack in Kabul and pray for the speedy recovery of the those injured in the attack.
By killing innocent and destitute people today, the enemies of Afghanistan's peace and stability showed that they are not worthy of friendship and will not change thier stance against Afghans.
In light of the calls by the Afghan nation and existed ensecurity, the ACB hereby cancel all kinds of cricket matches agreement with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
No agreement of friendly matches is possible between both parties.
With the hope of a prosperous and developed Afghanistan.

for some reason the mainly bihari PIOs in mauritius have also deeply preserved their hindu roots. every hamlet will usually have 1-3 temples. and its uniformly like that in rural areas. its only the really rich class who live on a extinct volcanic hill in the capital who resemble the lutyens sickulars over there. ..more into big houses, mercs etc.
the african origin ppl there do not seem to be into farming - but into jobs in service sector.
the leftover french and a section of PIO constitute the economic, business and political elite.
there is a chinese community who came via malaysia..seem to be into trading and fishing.
and slowly the arab money and a few green mosques are seeping in

I feel that Afghans should perhaps have waited at least a day before blaming TSP. It looks too desperate and knee-jerk if you ask me. Even a quick investigation followed by a dossier and official accusation.
