Re: India-Russia: News & Analysis
Regarding the Indo-Russian strategic partnership, it is far deeper than generally known. For instance, to study the armaments of the Arihant class (India) and the Yasen class (Russia) of nuclear submarines is to be startled by their similarity (i.e, the design of the VLS tubes). This is not a coincidence.Karan M wrote:The message by Modi is classic Indian, praise the hosts. Putin's speech in turn smells of narcissism, lookie what we did for you, we rock. Sadly, if this attitude continues, India-Russian ties will continue to deteriorate, because India is seen by Russia as a captive market for Russian weapons, and how long will corruption & underfinancing stymie India's own R&D, not for long. Russia is seen as a provider of cheap natural gas wagehra. Hi-tech trade between India & Russia is literally invisible, optics wise. Sad but it takes two hands to clap and I hope Russia starts looking more seriously at mending ties with India. This is not a UPA sarkar.
It's interesting that this obvious similarity in an extremely important strategic program is almost never discussed. Draw your own conclusions.

^^ Also, if imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it's noteworthy that the latest version of the U.S.'s Virginia-class submarines (Block V, built from 2019 onwards) will have 4 more Virginia Payload Tubes than previous versions. Block V of the Virginia class is very clearly drawing inspiration from the design of the Yasen class.

Re: India-Russia: News & Analysis
It looks like Indo-Russian relations are back on track after Mr.M's visit,or rather have gathered momentum after a little slowing down. The chaos in Washington has also made him drastically curtail his US schedule according to our media today. Trump's unpredictability, uncharitable words about India over global warming, etc.,have dismayed Indian decision makers. Contrast the yo-yo realtionship with the US and the steady ,positive one with Russia. You get thepicture.Expect more Indo-Russian deals to be announced in the future.

World's first hybrid 'aeroboat' made by Indo-Russian JV unveiled.
The world's first hybrid "aeroboat" capable of travelling on land, water, snow and sand that has been built by an Indo-Russian joint venture was unveiled in Moscow on Tuesday at a start-ups event organised by Russia's state-run Skolkovo Foundation.
The aeroboat is designed to access difficult terrain, such as flooded or marshy areas where the use of regular boats is made impossible because of shallow water, patches of dry land or by marine vegetation.
t has been designed by IIAAT Holding, a joint venture between the International Institute for Advanced Aerospace Technologies and Indian firm Millennium Aerodynamics.
The aeroboat is on demonstration in and around a pond in the two-day Startup Village annual event in Moscow for technology entrepreneurs and investors organised by Russia's biggest innovation fund the Skolkovo Foundation.
IAAT Holding board member Sukrit Sharan, who is in Moscow, told IANS in an e-mail interview that they have orders for more than 25 aeroboat units from private and government buyers in India of which they have already despatched five for use in disaster management.
These are much faster and more robust than the comparable hovercrafts, he said.
"We have already exported around five units to India, both for transportation and disaster management applications. These delivered products are poised to help save hundreds of lives in India during the monsoon season when the regions experience floods," Sharan said.
"After our success with Indian disaster management authorities, Russia's Ministry of Emergency Situations has shown very strong interest in these vehicles."
While hovercrafts on average move at around 45-50 km per hour on water, aeroboats are capable of going at around 150 km or more, he said.
"The Aeroboat is also more robust than hovercrafts, and with estimated maintenance costs of $400-$600 per year, is cheaper to maintain and fuel," Sharan said.
He pointed out that it runs on a "hybrid" engine, meaning it can run on either petrol or electricity, enabling users to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency.
According to the makers, with room for 10 passengers and one crew member, the 6.5-metre-long aeroboat can handle steep slopes and embankments, and does not require any marine infrastructure such as jetties, since it is amphibious.
"Hovercrafts work on static air-cushion, whereas aeroboats work on dynamic air-cushion. This feature gives aeroboats a huge advantage in terms of speed and manoeuvrability," he said.
"It's possible to use hovercrafts, but they are very expensive to operate and also have speed limitations. Our amphibious aeroboats can provide high-speed year-round navigation, even when bodies of water are frozen like in Russia," he added.

Thanks Avarachan. What i am concerned about is the relationship remains stuck at weaponry level and there seems to be no real movement in tech beyond that...and weaponry too, we seem to be looking beyond russia, again because russian suppliers were too blase about our needs, reneged on TOT or ignored spares. I hope russia india hi tech coop takes off.

This is unfortunately a pretty classic example of Indo-Russian 'Join Development' ... lots of hype, exaggerated claims, and little or no real technology benefit to us.
This type of boat is pretty commonplace in the glades/swamp areas of Florida and other Southern US states, and probably a lot of people there can build one themselves given a bit of time and some spare parts.
Re: India-Russia: News & Analysis
For Phillip, Austin and other Russophiles, this is the first of a 4 part series of interviews with Vladimir Putin commissioned by the Showtime TV Channel and conducted by Oliver Stone. They are being released 1 hour at a time on June 12,13,14 &15. If you are a subscriber to Showtime where ever it's available you should have 2 parts available as of this post. It's interesting because it delves into Putin's life but it also give's a Russian view on the history of the last 25 years.

ldev: Thanks for posting. In Video 2 just before the 45 min mark, Putin makes a comment that few countries can wield their sovereignty others pretend and are burdened with allied status. This is so true and it is what separates a great power from an ordinary one. India should never forget these words. A cocky SOB Putin is, Russia is lucky to have him. Please do post the next two episodes, do not subscribe to showtime.

The sanctions against Russia are in response to the violation of the territorial integrity of the Ukraine and Crimea, its brazen cyber-attacks and interference in elections, and its continuing aggression in Syria,” according to the deal's sponsors.
The amendment also allows “broad new sanctions on key sectors of Russia’s economy, including mining, metals, shipping and railways” and authorizes “robust assistance to strengthen democratic institutions and counter disinformation across Central and Eastern European countries that are vulnerable to Russian aggression and interference.”
New sanctions would be imposed on “corrupt Russian actors” and those “involved in serious human rights abuses,” anyone supplying weapons to the Syrian government or working with Russian defense industry or intelligence, as well as “those conducting malicious cyber activity on behalf of the Russian government” and “those involved in corrupt privatization of state-owned assets.”

The problem of the Deep state of Khan with Putin is in the Putin words about nations not being serious and happy being allies etc. Khan thought with Yeltsin people like him Rodina will be a happy pappy of Khan. Putin ended that hope. So he is evil.Austin wrote:Deep state in US Strikes back

Lavish London mansions. A hand-painted Rolls-Royce. And eight dead friends. For the British fixer Scot Young, working for Vladimir Putin's most vocal critic meant stunning perks – but also constant danger. His gruesome death is one of 14 that US spy agencies have linked to Russia – but the UK police shut down every last case. A bombshell cache of documents today reveals the full story of a ring of death on British soil that the government has ignored.
Re: India-Russia: News & Analysis
Even if a stray dog dies in UKstan they would be blaming Putin personally for poisoning the dog with polonium ..........UKistan is a rabid dog under tight leash of Unkil and depending on what Unkil wants it would bark or just sit tight.
Re: India-Russia: News & Analysis
Last night a respected Russian journo on dateline London (BBC) said that after the Chechen terror campaign,Russia warned the West about the same, offered to help it join NATO,were rebuffed. he said that in the recent UK elections ,terror was a major factor. The other white journos pooh-pooed the same, despite the Manchester bombings,London terror X 2,and must be chewing on their tongue after last night's latest terror attack, seeming to be a white backlash.
The Cold War warriors in both the US and UK are determined to destabilise Russia by any means.Unfortunately, the Russian people well know their machinations and have put their faith in Putuin.True, there are huge problems with such vast nation.WE know what problems we too face from J&K to the NE insurgents,Naxals, now Gorkhaland on fire. But the desire top destabilise Russia is an attempt to gain control over Russia's enormous mineral wealth, which can last for centuries and redyuce its military prowess so that the US/WEst can engage militarily upon any spot on the planet without fear.
The overwhelming global ambition of the US is domination, not promoting democracy. Europe is dependent upon it for fuel, while the US wants ME fuel (which it has an element of control through its Arab Sunni allies,ever-ready to buy billions of US arms so they can maintain these despotic regimes) to replace it via the ME/Levant route which is why we are seeing so much conflict in the ME/levant. The stumbling blocks are Iran and the Shiites, supported by most Iraqis,Syrians with mil support from Russia and dpl. support from China.
This explains the provocative "colour rebellions" in the erstwhile Warsaw Pact nations, destruction of Yugoslavia and its "Balkanisation",the same tactic now being used in the Middle East,Balkanising former stable states like Iraq, Syria,LIbya and now Iran. This has forced Russia to join hands with China at least diplomatically,to resist this 21st century "crusade" (Dubya Bush used the word) by the US,and to bring to heel its most worrisome rivals. Onlky Russia can match the US in strat. nuclear terms and the fact that Putin over the last two decades has dramatically reversed the decline in Russian military capability is anathema to die-hard US neo-cons and their ilk. One US journo last night spoke of the former KGB hand of Putin, conveniently forgetting that George Bush Sr. was also a former CIA chief! US generals like "Mad Dog" Mattis can be Sec. of State for Defence, but that must be its unique privilege. The ROW must submit to Pax Americana.Fortunately, many countries like India differ, and we (fortunately) have the strongest repudiant of that deviant policy Putin as the modern Czar of Russia.

Re: India-Russia: News & Analysis
^^^ Philip, Every nation except India will do everything in their power or bag of tricks to destabilize their principal opponents to ensure capabilities are eliminated. Intentions can always change and if capabilities are capped and roll backed they benefit by kicking the can downstream. So its naïve to assume that US wont do its utmost to undo the capabilities of Russia.
And same thing with respect to Russia. Right now the 'collusion'/hacking story has unraveled the political consensus in US with Democrats feeling they got cheated of a sureshot victory! I don't know how much Russia officially did the hacking but it was a big blow to the fragile egos of the US political class.
In your statement you say Russia was forced to join hands with China but this is the old normal of Eurasia reasserting itself.
It would have happened anyway.
Robert Kaplan thinks US has only a military role in Eurasia. Political, Economic and diplomatic are all by the wayside.
Very big picture level conclusion is Putin has restored the Russian Orthodox Church and replaced the hereditary Czar system with an elected leader.
This brings it in line with the post-French Revolution Europe.
This fact is totally lost on US.
