This Lt. Gen. Vincent Stewart is interesting. I had never heard of him before this report.

Some reading reveals that he is:
1) A marine officer of Jamaican descent.
2) A political general, rather than a military/strategic one. Last overseas deployment was Kuwait-Iraq war 1990-91. Since then, has been in Washington hanging around corridors of power.

Sound familiar?

Remember Al-Quolin Bin Powell al-Trinidadi, who traded in his uniform for the Secretary of State's office and served as a dutiful bag-carrying houseboy for his boss during the run up to Iraq War 2003? He, too, was a very active apologist making excuse after excuse for Pakistan: (they supported the Taliban only to limit Indian influence in Afghanistan, A Q Khan was a one-man proliferation network with no TSPA/ISI involvement, "the past is the past" etc.)

Caribbeans of African descent have a deep-seated hatred of Indians and particularly Hindus. Indians, mostly Hindus, were brought to the Caribbean Islands to live and work alongside the Africans as essentially indentured labour.

The Africans, who had been brought there as slaves, were forced to give up any connection to their native culture or heritage in order to "rise" socially and economically... become more "English" in their behaviour, more "Christian" in their beliefs, surrendering completely to Macaulayization in order to progress beyond the menial labour class. This forced choice was not imposed on the hardworking Indians, who achieved social and economic success in the Caribbean while still remaining true to their Hindu roots and traditions. I strongly believe this is a reason why Caribbean blacks in particular harbor a seething resentment and hatred of Hindus.
RD ji my experience has been similar from talking to some friends from these places. Additional reasons that they quoted were
1. Although Indians were kind of slave too but being indentured they traveled with their families and were not subject to the same atrocities that these blacks were and it was a case of jealous out of other being better in being pathetic.
2. Indians despite of all the odds managed to achieve prosperity in carribbeans, US and everywhere and all the more so in recent past. That too adds to this insecurity/hate. In my experience, some whites despite of being outright racist acknowledge the fact that Indians are good and carribbeans and colored folks find it hard to believe that people from a third world country are coming and taking their jobs, while not realising they or their kids are simply not slogging enough in school.

But yeah only on BRF we get to gangotri or the sea from which water evaporated

1. india's mandarins could be throwing this news to porki sources to test the reaction at home...
2. This would not be a bad idea, but seems to be no. more focussed on defensive operations around kabul
3. From screwing pakistan big time we may have to consider a large deployment on the af-pak border or an Airforce base with Su 30 stationed. Suddenly napaki's insecurities will turn out to be real. The fact they dont have and cant have any defensive (forget about offensive) infrastructure on their western border will give their army huge nightmares. Even a 10-15k force will tie their jihadis (uniformed and ununiformed)

The Paks have deployed JF-17 bandars in Ka ra and Peshawar
If the IAF deploys MKIs in Afg, the bandars are going to run away!!!

Don't say things like this, the Pakis start browning their Shalwars

Learnt from twitter that pakis lost 4 5 fighters in the aftermath of surgical strikes just patrolling their skies, we can increase their attrition just by forcing pakis to conduct more sorties and reduce their numbers.

If we want to think ourselves as a power, even if a regional one, we need to show who the top dog in this region is. The very thought of a contingent full of Tejas/Su 30, Rudra, LCH, artillery (Dhanush etc) gives me goose bumps. This will give these machines actual war fighting experience.
The fact is India is fighting a war with this pigs. It is better to fight this war away from our territory and closer to these pakistanis even if it comes at a greater monetary cost. A deployment of 15-30k along with its support will not break the bank for us, but will be more fruitful in terms of
1. active combat experience for our troops
2. war time testing of our domestic products along with refinement in our strategies
3. Significant drain on paki resources; they will be forced to cover their musharrafs and saving their lands which otherwise would have been used to attack/wound bharatvarsh.
4. Help in stabilization of Afghanistan as well.
5. Presence in Afghanistan areas closer to PoK can also make porkis shit bricks. If not those areas, even Kabul is 250Km from Peshawar and 350 Km from Isloo and they dont have any Air Defense on western borders to speak of (ignoring AWACS).
A deployment in afghanistan will make their situation like nude woman with a hanky, in northern india a phrase like "nangi sukhaiye kya and chupayegi kya"

BTW I just read that tanks are not very effective in Afghanistan because of terrain and US did not bring any Abrams initially so keeping arjun out.

That's just part of the story.

Iran is a very unreliable partner and they tend to change decisions in a snap. I can imagine them withdrawing support to get TSP to lay off the muzzie nato plan. We risk being dangerously cut off in a landlocked nation. Even accessing Afghanistan via air is a nightmare due to the geography. Just look at how much TSP has managed to abuse a super power like the US due to the Afghan geography, and US has no shortage of bases around the globe.
If things go sour between Iran and TSP, there is no doubt that Arabs and US will take full advantage to attack them on the western front and I doubt Iran will ever remove troops from that front, so they cannot guarantee supply routes to Afghanistan.

The issue with land locked nations is that you need reliable support of multiple neighbors at the very least, and no meddling from the others who have a clear geographic advantage. Something the Soviets learnt the hard way and the US has probably realized by now. I cannot begin to imagine how much must have been paid to TSP covertly to secure the NATO supply route to Afghanistan. It will be a grotesque figure no doubt.

Iran is not reliable at all. The only sure fire way is to take back whole of PoK and open a path to central asia. Rest will fall in place soon.

Afghanistan-India air corridor program first flight scheduled for 15th June.
India is serious about maintaining its influence in Kabul this time.

Without realpolitik though, I wonder if Indian influence will outlast American troops in Afghanistan.

He is referring to Haqqanis and their relationship with Pakis most likely.

Very true observation. The Amreekis found to their dismay that "their warlord" assigned to ensure that OBL does not escape from his Torah-Bora hideout, following 2001 attack on Afghanistan - looked the other way and allowed Bin Laden and his Al-Qaeda entourage to slip into Pakistan Tribal Territory - Of course for a consideration !

Rudradev, very interesting and credible idea. But it begs the question, why single out Hindus? Wouldn't these Afro-Caribbeans also resent Moslems for more or less the same reason? After all most Moslem Indo-Caribbeans also retained their religion, in the face of Christian domination and proselyitization. Was it simply a fact of Moslems being in significantly less numbers than Hindus, and therefore more visibly identifiable as 'successful' and closer to the white rulers?

Some rocket propelled grenades were fired into Indian Embassy in Kabul today. Noone is hurt.
A day ago, some news outlets were claiming that 15k Indian troops will be posted in Afghanistan. I very much doubt that story and it is more likely a paki plant but would be happy if India does actually put some boots there.

Kabul attack: Indian Ambassador Manpreet Vohra Says, “India will never be cowed down”

http://www.india-aware.com/kabul-attack ... owed-down/
In an exclusive conversation, Ambassador Vohra said, “A rocket landed in the India House compound at 10:25 am. There were no casualties. Investigations are ongoing.”

He added: “India has dealt with terror and will never be cowed down by it.”

The attack on the Indian ambassador’s residence comes less than a week after a truck blew up at the entrance to the Green Zone, inside which the Indian embassy as well as India House is located.

Indian officials in Kabul also said that Vohra was determined to send the message that India will play its part in bringing peace to Afghanistan, no matter what other political forces thought.

The incident coincides with peace talks called the Kabul Process which focuses on ways to end cross border terrorism and has representatives from 23 nations in attendance.

While it is unclear who fired the rocket, official sources believe it was likely to have been fired from a nearby hill, perhaps from Kabul’s PD 16.

US should respect Afghanistan's sovereignty: China

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/art ... 144155.cms
BEIJING: China today said the US should respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan, amid reports that America may deploy more troops in the war- torn country, which borders China's volatile Xinjiang province.

Such a move is "highly relevant to the development and security of the neighbouring region and the countries", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lu Kang told media here reacting to reports that US President Donald Trump has given Defence Secretary Jim Mattis the authority to determine troop levels in Afghanistan.

"So, we contend that any move should respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of Afghanistan and conducive to the Afghanistan's peace process," Lu said.

U.S. 'not winning' in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary tells Congress

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa- ... SKBN1941Y1

The United States is "not winning" the war against Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis told Congress on Tuesday, promising to brief lawmakers on a new war strategy by mid-July that is widely expected to call for thousands more U.S. troops.

The remarks were a blunt reminder of the gloom underscoring U.S. military assessments of the war between the U.S.-backed Afghan government and the Islamist militant group, classified by U.S. commanders as a "stalemate" despite almost 16 years of fighting.

"We are not winning in Afghanistan right now. And we will correct this as soon as possible," Mattis said in testimony to the Senate Armed Services Committee. Mattis acknowledged that he believed the Taliban were "surging" at the moment, something he said he intended to address.

Three killed in attack on mosque in Kabul
KABUL: A suicide bomber killed at least three people and wounded five more in an attack at mosque in the Afghan capital of Kabul on Thursday, security officials said. The suspected bomber tried to enter the mosque but was blocked by police, setting off a gun battle, Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said. The attacker then took refuge in a kitchen before detonating a bomb. The attack came as mosques around the city were crowded for a night of religious observances as part of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. The Al Zahra mosque is used by Kabul's Shi'ite minority, who have been targeted by suicide bombings in the past. An attack on a Shia mosque in November killed more than 30 people. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for that attack, as well as an attack last July that killed more than 80 people at a mostly Shia demonstration.

What are the chances that powers who have control over Afghanistan will collude to breakup Afghanistan? In interest of Iran? Yes. Russia? Yes. Pakistan? Yes, if the dominance of the Tajiks and Uzbeks continues in Afghanistan strategic affairs, No if it can use the Taleban/Pashtuns to extend their dominance over other ethnic groups and regions. China? Does not care. India? No. US? Yes from a long term perspective. No for short term and a possible No from a long term geo-political perspective. The 9 bases US has in the country is gold for the US and a great set of bases smack in both Russia and China's under belly. Come to think of it, it can be used against India too. The only problem is access for which they will always have to rely on Pakistan or Iran. For the foreseeable future, Pakistan has the US by its ball$ and vice versa.

Thoughts on possibility of the breakup and support for it as a "logical" end to the civil war by interested powers?

Almost 9 years ago the Pakis via proxies attacked the Indian Embassy in Kabul in 2008. We have thread in this forum.

At that time it was reported to be the largest IED detonated.

Looks like the 2017 tanker truck IED is bigger than that and the target is again the Indian Embassy.

Its a Pakistani attack to show the Sunni NATO their utility.

Anyway its a failed attack by the soosai bomber. He blew himself up and killed some kitchen staff.

The security should have shot him before he entered the kitchen.

Must be those low powered 0.223 caliber guns.

Hadley seems to have lost his marbles. Ganging up with a Paki to make US force India to talk to Pakistan wont fly.

This could be part of the prelude to NaMo visit.

if so he will find himself unwelcome in India.

And also highly overestimates the US leverage over India.

RamanaGaru,

leaving aside whether or not US has any leverage over India, it is absolutely disgusting and annoying how US still looks at TSP through the prism of India. Its alwys "improve" India TSP relations and everything is hunky dory. If you further decode this, then it means India must hand over Kashmir to TSP, India must lay off Afghanistan. And if you decode it even further, it means, India must render itself as a "South Asian" eunuch consuming American pizza and coke, accept some H1-B bread crumbs thrown at it, and we all live happily ever after.

Seems like Pakistan allows road trade fro A'stan to India, but not the other way around. So, perhaps this air corridor is more symbolic than have too much trade/eco value.

Flights over Pakistan is permitted both ways. If Pakistan stops over flights, we can do the same to them. It will prove much more costly to Pakistan even on a per flight basis.
