DEHRADUN: Indian cyclist's qualification for the Olympics may still look a distant dream, but secretary general of Cycling Federation of India (CFI) Onkar Singh, believes they can realise it in the 2020 Olympics scheduled to take place at Tokyo in Japan.

In an exclusive chat with TOI, Onkar Singh said, "We have chalked out a meticulous roadmap with an aim to qualify for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. We are getting continuous support from the government and I am confident that by that time we will have the potential to grab a medal at the Olympics."

He also revealed that 80 budding cyclists from across the country are being imparted world-class training at cycling academy inside Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium and was established in support with Sports Authority of India (SAI) and World Cycling Centre in Switzerland.

"We have a state-of-the-art infrastructure at the academy and all the 80 cyclists have been provided best cycles, spares and complete attire of cycling including kitting, shoes and helmets from our side. Our federation is working with utter sincerity and concerted vision to help our cyclists dominate at international level. Scientific training is being provided to them by expert's coaches," secretary general of CFI told TOI.

With special focus on track events, the cycling federation is now planning to procure tailor-made cycles from England for top ten cyclists in the country. "We want to give our cyclists best equipments in the world so that they can compete with the best in the world. Government has agreed on our proposal to buy new cycles. Each cycle will cost us around Rs 10 lakh," Onkar Singh told TOI.

He further added that India's young cycling sensation Deborah Herold from Andaman will motivate hundreds of young children to take up professional cycling in future.

He said, "Deborah has created history by qualifying for the 2016 Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Track Cycling World Championships for the first time in India's history. Earlier, Deborah had become the first Indian female cyclist to reach the heights of fourth place in the UCI individual world ranking."

Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand part of task force to prepare for next three Olympics

India’s lone Olympic gold-medallist Abhinav Bindra and national badminton coach Pullela Gopichand on Monday found a place in an eight-member Task Force of the Sports Ministry to draw up an action plan for the next three Olympic Games.

Just days after the end of the Rio Olympics, where India won just two medals, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the setting up of a task force which will help plan for the “effective participation” of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympics — in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

Bindra, Gopichand and former Indian hockey captain Viren Rasquinha were the only three former sportspersons named in the task force. The other five members of the task force are School Sports Promotion Board head Om Pathak, hockey coach S Baldev Singh (Coach of Sardar Singh), who runs an academy in Shahabad, G L Khanna (Professor and Dean of Exercise and Physiology at Manav Rachna International University at Faridabad), journalist Rajesh Kalra and Sports Authority of Gujarat Director General Sandeep Pradhan.

Announcing the task force, Sports Minister Vijay Goel told reporters that “the tenure of the committee will be for three months or till the time it submits its report”.

He said the job of the chairman of the committee will be given on rotational basis while Pradhan will be the convener.

The main job of the task force will be to suggest a comprehensive action plan including short-term, medium-term and long-term measures for effective participation of Indian sportspersons in the next three Olympic Games. Other points included in the terms of reference were to suggest effective methods to identify core probable/medal prospects for 2020 Olympics, their coaches and support staff; to suggest effective talent identification system for 2024 and 2028 Olympics; to identify components of world class support system for elite sportspersons and ways to significantly improve standards of coaching; to suggest ways to create and upgrade sports infrastructure necessary to train top-level athletes and to make suggestion regarding foreign training and exposure of top-level athletes.

Asked to whom the task force will submit its report, Goel said, “The report will be submitted to Sports Ministry. But since the Prime Minister has approved the committee, the final report will be submitted to the PMO.”

Asked why there were no representatives from some Olympic medal-winning sports, he said, “This task force is not a representative body where people of several disciplines will be there. This task force is open for all, whoever wants to give ideas, he can give.

“If I start including people discipline-wise, so many names will come up and there will be no end. This committee can call any expert, Indian or foreigner, coaches or former sportspersons in various fields. Anybody can give suggestions to this task force and moreover anybody can come and give the suggestion directly to the Sports Minister.”

Goel said all the suggestions and recommendations of the task force will be applied to Asian Games and Commonwealth Games also. “This task force will basically recommend what would be the best practises for the preparation of the next three Olympics and so these can be implemented to Asian Games and Commonwealth Games also,” he said.

Asked if the government will help 1998 Asian Games gold medallist boxer Dingko Singh, Goel said, “We have been constantly helping him and we will give more help. We have spoken to him. He applied for Rs 50,000 and we gave him. If he sends the bills to us, we will reimburse them. But there is process and system in the government, he has to apply.

“The ministry is not in a position to know what is happening to sportspersons, active or former, all the time. We come to know about them sometimes from media reports or sometimes from other sources. Till the time we are not told or no demand comes from the sportspersons, we cannot help them,” the minister said.

Goel also revealed some significant initiatives and changes to be made in the existing programmes and in the implementation of the Sports Code. He said the earlier practice of sportspersons under the Target Olympic Podium (TOP) Scheme choosing the training venue and schedule on their own, will be reviewed.

“The TOP Committee will select medal prospect athletes and plan for their training. Recently, we have re-constituted the TOP Committee. It will identify around 100 top athletes and they will start preparations for both the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games next year.

“This TOP Committee will decide whether we will have individual athlete-based or programme-based approach in future. Earlier, individual athletes go for training according to their choice but we are now going to see whether it can be changed, deciding where and how the athletes will train. Of course, we will consult the athletes,” Goel said. He added that the TOP Committee will submit a report in two months.

Goel said the ministry will start a talent identification programme for youngsters of 8-year-old or below. “We will give scholarships to these children for 5-8 years, so that they can train continuously. We will finalise the amount but it can be Rs 5 lakh to 1000 children.”

The minister also said that the Committee constituted recently to review the Sports Code will decide some important issues, including whether the Lodha Committee recommendations can be applied to National Sports Federations. “Sports Code review committee will submit a report within one month. It will study the Lodha Committee recommendations and suggest whether they can be applied to National Sports Federations (NSFs) after their consent.

“The committee will also look into whether the Sports Code will be applied at the state and district levels, and whether it will be applied to only the president and secretary of NSFs or should it be extended to all other office bearers,” said Goel.

“The government does not want to infringe on the autonomy of NSFs but they are slowly starting to understand that they have to function with accountability and responsibility,” he added.

Got it!! it is here
http://www.indiatimes.com/sports/8-ways ... 22213.html

1. The task force made a point strongly that all recommendations should apply to Para athletes as well. Towards that, the report itself has been titled "Preparation of 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games"

2. Set up an Empowered Steering Committee to drive all initiatives. This body will be solely responsible for ensuring proper preparation for Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This body should also have full financial autonomy

3. An internationally acclaimed High Performance Director (HPD) be appointed to work with the Empowered Steering Committee

4. Removing cap on salary for Indian coaches and support staff. Former athletes should be encouraged to return to coaching/support staff/technical field through deputation from various organisations. While this happens, they should retain their seniority in their respective organisations

5. Pradhan Mantri Gold Card should be issued to the elite potential athlete & their coaches as an identity of being a 'National asset'. This card will also provide facilities for emergency quota for air/train/bus tickets and hassle free access at various places

6. A special cell within ESC should be established to take care of all the logistical issues for athletes, so they can concentrate on training alone

7. Sports Science to be accorded top priority. It must play a key role in assisting HPD, Coaches to deliver results. It will ensure all sportspersons have access to the latest in the world, be it medicine, nutrition advise, anti-doping, etc. Athletes should also have access to a 24x7 NADA helpline where they can seek advise on any doubt

8. Primacy of Athletes and Coaches to be maintained at all times. ESC and HPD to work towards creating an environment that allows them to deliver. Would include infrastructure, equipment, training camps and all else

-----------------

I do not like this plan it is very vague and it took them 3 months to come up with this!!

I am not sure whether sports medicine is taught in Indian medical colleges or not., but here in USA sports medicine is the number one thing that is available at all levels from 5 years old and above.

A NFL like american football team has one sports medicine M.D doctor for every 4-5 athletes and each team (50-60 athletes) has a team of sports medicine doctors, trainers, physio-therapists, nurses, etc.

Prannoy beats Chen Long. Srikanth through too. The Korean remains the main challenge. The Japanese is unknown. All the female seeds except the Korean has lost. Saina and Sindhu lost to much lower seeds.

Congrats to Prannoy . Beating two world #1s on successive days . I hope they both make it through their semifinals . After Singapore it would be wonderful to have two Indians contest one more fonal , this time at a 1st tier super series premier , not a 2nd tier super series like Singapore Open was.

Prannoy is in awesome form. Looks like new coach made impression on him. Commentators were equating Prannoy's style with Hidayat's.
Really nice to see him beating two world #1 in back to back matches. His first super series semi appearance.

India going to play Canada on 06/17 which defeated Pakistan 6-0 ! Should be interesting, I hope boys won't repeat mistakes did against Scots in first half.

Indian junior wrestling doing good so far winning two bronze in GR and one gold, one silver & one bronze in WW with more weight categories matches scheduled with FS 's weight categories on weekends.

Prannoy vs Chen Long was a great game to watch. They seem to play similar games. Not quite Lin Dan god level play, but effective blend of power and guile. Prannoy basically out-Chen Longed Chen Long :)

Regarding Hockey World League Semifinals, we are the host of the Finals, so we make it through regardless of how we perform in the Semifinals. But still it would be nice to win games and make the knockout rounds to maintain our ranking.

Taufiq Hidayat's coach Mulyo Handoyo currently helps coach the Indian team. Also, Prannoy is one of the few on the circuit to have a backhand smash, a shot that was a Hidayat trademark. He played it multiple times against a startled Lee Chong Wei. Hidayat in his prime was probably the only guy who could reliably beat Lin Dan. Even LCW has a mental block against Dan.

BAI is doing an excellent job in singles. We have also hired a good Indonesian doubles coach, but we're much further behind in doubles and it will take time for results to show. I want us to see us medal in Thomas Cup, Uber Cup and Sudirman Cup by end of decade.

Not the prettiest win, but a win is a win. His opponent Son Wan Ho is the world #1 after all. It's sad Prannoy didn't make it an all-Indian final. He wore himself out beating everyone else . Indian mens singles is looking up again. I hope Srikanth rides the wave of new confidence to a win here , and more to follow.

and India defeats Canada 3-0 in their second match (hockey)

ontinuing with their impressive run, India blanked Canada 3-0 to register their second consecutive win at the Hockey World League Semi-Final, in London, on Saturday.

India scored three field goals through S V Sunil (5th minute), Akashdeep Singh (10th) and Sardar Singh (18th) to pocket full three points from the Pool B game at the Lee Valley Hockey Centre.

The win virtually secured India's place in the quarter-finals of the tournament.

India had earlier defeated Scotland 4-1 in their opening encounter on Thursday.

The sixth ranked Indians will play arch-rivals Pakistan in their next pool match on Sunday.

India meant business from the onset and secured their first penalty corner as early as in the opening minute of the game, but Harmanpreet Singh's effort sailed over the goal.

Two minutes later, India's last match hero Ramandeep Singh's shot from the top of the circle was saved by David Carter in front of the Canadian goal.

India's persistent attacks resulted in the first goal in the fifth minute when Sunil scored from a narrowest of angles after his initial shot was saved by Carter.

India doubled their lead five minutes later through Akashdeep who neatly deflected in a Ramandeep pass.

India continued in the same vein in the second quarter and increased their lead in the 18th minute through Sardar who pushed home from a Ramandeep pass.

India earned their second penalty corner in the 25th minute but Jasjeet Singh Khular's try went wide of the target as Roelant Oltmans' men went into the breather with a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Three minutes into the second half, Canada earned a penalty corner but India goalkeeper Akash Chikte made three saves in quick succession, first denying Keegan Pereira twice and then palming away Scott Tupper's shot.

Minutes later, India secured their third penalty corner and skipper Manpreet Singh's try from a variation was brilliantly kept away by Carter.

The Indians continued to press hard and garnered two more penalty corners but failed to capitalise on the chances yet again.

India won the game today, but coach Oltmans would be worrying about his team's poor conversion rate from penalty corners.

Meanwhile, in the first match of the day, China defeated Korea 5-2 in Pool A.

Inaugurating the new world class synthetic track at the Usha (PT Usha) School of Athletics here via video conference, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the expansion of the sports industry will also help in the growth of the country’s economy.

Congrats to Kidambi. He's become more deliberate and mature now. Winning another of the Big Four SSPs will surely boost his confidence. His first was his famous win in the China Open, beating the legendary Lin Dan in the final. I hope he wins All England or the year's World Championships next .

On Badmintoncentral, Indonesian fans are calling the loss of Mulyo Handoyo, their famous coach, to India, a big mistake. Since he joined 3 months ago, Sai Praneeth and Kidambi made the Singapore Open final, and subsequently Kidambi won Indonesian Open, while Prannoy made the semis.

London: A clinical India demolished a hapless Pakistan 7-1 to register their third consecutive victory and seal a place in the quarter-finals of the Hockey World League Semi-Final, here today. It was a complete performance by the Indians who dominated their arch-rivals throughout the match to post a facile win and zoom to the top of Pool B ahead of The Netherlands.

Dragflicker Harmanpreet Singh (13th minute, 33rd), Talwinder Singh (21st, 24th), Akashdeep Singh (47th, 59th) and Pradeep Mor (49th) scored for India at the Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre, while Pakistan's consolation goal came from the stick of Muhammad Umar Bhutta (57th).

India are atop Pool B with three wins from as many games, just ahead of The Netherlands, who are placed second. Pakistan, on the other hand, are at the bottom of the pool after losing all three matches they have played so far.

India will next play The Netherlands on Tuesday, while Pakistan will face Scotland tomorrow.

India hockey team players wear black arm bands

India hockey team today wore black arm bands during its match against Pakistan at the Hero Hockey World League Semi-Final to condole the deaths of martyrs in the recent attacks on the Indian army.

The Indian team support staff also wore the black arm bands. India eventually thrashed Pakistan 7-1 in this match. The hockey fraternity in India has always been vocal about the pride and respect it has for the Indian soldiers and always condemned such barbaric acts.

The players have often taken to social media to show their condolences for the martyrs of the country. In fact, PR Sreejesh had dedicated the team's victory at the 2016 Asian Champions Trophy to the soldiers, where they beat Pakistan in the final.

"The players of the Indian hockey teams have always shown tremendous belief and support for the Indian Armed Forces who guard the safety of our nation. They are proud of the nation's soldiers and are often inspired by their dedication and sacrifice," said Mohd Mustaque Ahmad, Secretary General, Hockey India.

"As sportsmen, the Indian hockey teams have always shown solidarity and compassion towards the soldiers and have often dedicated their victories to the Indian Army. Today, the team strongly felt the need to condole the recent attacks carried out in Jammu & Kashmir where Indian soldiers lost their lives.

"It was a unanimous decision to wear black arm bands to condole these deaths and they wish for peace to prevail in the state of Jammu & Kashmir," he added.

Captain Manpreet Singh said: "We wanted to win on the field today to show not only our proud nation but all the world that we will stand up and fight for what we believe in through sport."

Shame on the entire team except pandya and bhuvi. These Jokers had the gall to come and even talk and captain saying they are proud of their performance. They should go and hide in a dungeon after this shambolic display humiliating India , morons.

India did not play in the first part of the match. Only the Dutch were playing. Unless it was strategic to save energy - although one would prefer to face England over Argentina in the SF given current rankings I feel Oltman is very defensive when playing higher ranked teams. the attitude is India can't beat them. So the team goes into sleep and by the time they wake up they are a few goals down. Harinder OTOH is always playing to win no matter what the ranking is. His boys can run from start to finish of the tournament. I was very disappointed with the strategy unless it was to save energy.

NEW DELHI: Indian football coach Stephen Constantine is sure that the side under him will breach the historical best FIFA ranking of 94 in the next few months, as he trains his guns on taking the country to a third Asian Cup.
Owing to seven international wins on the trot since last year, the Indian team is currently sitting at exactly 100th spot, and Constantine said by the time the Asian Cup qualifiers end in March next year they should be placed better than the 94th achieved in February 1996.
"I am not very good at mathematics. But if we are 93, I would be the happiest man. That would be the historical highest. I am going to do it. I don't know if it will be on July 6 (next FIFA ranking date) but I am going to do it. I don't know if that (Kyrgyzstan win on June 13 in Asian Cup qualifiers) will push us that far but I hope to make history at the end of these qualifiers," Constantine told PTI in an interview. India beat Kyrgyzstan on June 13 in Bangalore to place themselves on course to qualify for the Asian Cup in 2019. The qualifying round matches will continue till March next year. India's next match is against Macau on September 5.

If India qualify for the 2019 Asian Cup, it will be only the third time they would make it to the flagship continental tournament after 1984 and 2011.

When told that India used to be in the 20s among Asian countries but are now at 11th spot just below the likes of China and Qatar, Constantine said in a lighter vein, "Not in their lifetime (people must be thinking this can happen)."

"I said at the very first press conference that there are going to be dark days. At that time, we have not beaten Nepal for two years, we were at 173rd in FIFA rankings then. During the World Cup qualifiers we were not a team, we had so many new players, from different systems, different coaches, different philosophy.

"You cannot change all of these in three, four or five games, that is not possible. It is not overnight. The average age of the team is from earlier 30 to 23 now, you have a team of the future now, for at least five-six years," said the coach who has given debuts to more than 30 players in his just over one-year stint.

Impressive performance from Srikanth lately. He beat World #1 Son Wan Ho all over again in Australia. Then Sai Praneeth, who had beaten him in Singapore. And then rising Chinese star Shi Yuqi, who's currently ranked much higher. Will likely face Chen Long in the final. He's going to get a lot of ranking points for making three finals in a row. He's practically embarrassing the world #4 in this match:

The striking feature of Kidambi's 2014 China Open was unbelievable net play. He seemed to make impossible shots at will at the net. He couldn't replicate the same kind of play in some of the later matches he lost after the China Open. He seems to have re engineered his game quite a bit now. He is more of an all court player now. His defense was excellent, so are his smashes and he still has his net play though he doesn't use it as much. Except for a couple of points, he pretty much avoided it until the second game.
