KARACHI: The army commander and ruler of Roman Empire, Julius Caesar enlarged the Empire, expanding it from Africa to Europe. A patient of epilepsy by birth, he, reaching the Court, often fell unconscious. After the demise of his first wife, Julius Caesar married a girl, named Pompeia. One day Pompeia held a festival in the commemoration of goddess Bona Dea. No man was allowed to attend the festival, but a young man Clodius disguised himself and was able to reach Pompeia. Doing so, he was apprehended and tried for touching her. However, Caesar could not present any proof against him during the trial, and thus the court set him free. Nevertheless Caesar, saying that his wife mist be above suspicion, divorced his wife. It gave rise to a famous proverb: ‘Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion’…. Commenting on the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif by Pakistan’s judiciary, a Saudi newspaper alluded to this proverb, saying that Nawaz Sharif had forgotten this norm that ‘Caesar’s wife must be above suspicion’. Pakistani Prime Ministers have been removed from offices in different ways. Sometime the revolt of powerful circles exiled them; sometime the judiciary sent them home packing, they were ousted by their own parties, or murdered or sometime hanged or intrigues brewing in the House forced them to resign. So, none of them was allowed to complete his term. On the other hand, none of the powerful persons was brought to book. International media has seen the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as a political volatility. The influential newspapers, magazines and think tanks have declared it precarious for democratic values, political stability and economic progress of the country. This verdict has also highlighted an important proposition of Pakistan’s political saga that its 70 year old history has not seen any Prime Minister completing his five year term. Instead of strengthening the democratic process, the judiciary has also reinforced the powerful circles. This verdict has set forth a dangerous precedence.

According to the NYT report, when Mullah Akhtar Muhammad Mansour , then Taliban leader, was killed in an American drone strike, he sensed hours ago that something was not right. When he came home from a secret visit from Iran in May 2016, he called his relatives and brother while driving in a remote area of Southwestern Pakistan to let them know that he was about to die, reports claimed. “He knew something was happening,” a former Taliban commander, who is close to Mullah Mansour’s inner circle, said in an interview. “That’s why he was telling his family members what to do and to stay united.”Taliban commanders do not give interviews but it was a rare case as this one agreed to sit for interview on the condition that his name and location would not be made public. This fellow agreed for interview as he had escaped from insurgent’s rank and his life was under threat.
His statements offered insights into final hours of Mullah Mansour’s life and why and how he was killed revealing dangerously widening rift with Pakistani sponsors, reported NYT.The account was complemented and supported in interviews with two senior Afghan officials who have conducted their own investigations into the Taliban leader’s death — Haji Agha Lalai, presidential adviser and deputy governor of Kandahar; and Gen. Abdul Raziq, the police chief of Kandahar Province.Growing number of western security analysts and Afghans on both sides of war contented after more than a year that Pakistan was the mastermind behind Mullah Mansour’s death as it wanted the removal of the Taliban leader it could not trust, according to NYT report. There were similar reports about the time of his death ! This just confirms what was suspected earlier .
“Pakistan was making very strong demands,” the former commander said. “Mansour was saying you cannot force me on everything. I am running the insurgency, doing the fighting and taking casualties and you cannot force us.”Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada an Islamic cleric with no military experience became leader of the Taliban after the demise of Mullah Mansour. Yet Afghanistan has seen little reprieve with his death, as hard-liners within the movement took over and redoubled their offensive to take power. There is little chance of anyone speaking out, the former commander said. “Ninety percent of the Taliban blame the Pakistanis,” he said. “But they cannot say anything. They are scared.”While preparing for an ambitious offensive across eight provinces in Afghanistan last year, Mullah Mansour wanted to expand his sources of support, they said. The report further claimed he relied for main financing of Taliban group on Arab Gulf states, Pakistan’s intelligence agency and Afghan drug lords. Moreover, he also sought weapons from Iran and Russia and also met with officials of both countries. This also confirms the oft repeated cliche that "you can rent an Afghan, but you cannot "own" him"
Mullah wanted to get Taliban out of the control and reach of Pakistan that’s why he formed relations with Iran, according to his former associate and Afghan officials. He wanted to negotiate peace in accordance with his terms that’s where his different views from Pakistan gained momentum, NYT said. Mullah Mansour had refused to follow orders from Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, to destroy infrastructure and to increase the cost of the war for the Afghan government. He opposed the promotion of Pakistan’s hard-line protégé Sirajuddin Haqqani to be his deputy, and he had dodged Pakistan’s demands to push its agenda in negotiations.
He says that Mullah Mansour was seeking new protectors as his disagreements with Pakistan were growing.“There were reports that he may have wanted to escape,” General Raziq said. “We knew one month before that Mansour was ready to make peace.” General Raziq also said Mullah Mansour feared assassination by Pakistan. “He told his relatives that ‘relations with Pakistan were very bad and they might kill me.”Mullah Mansour was alone on the day he was killed. The Paki Deep State has no qualms about eliminating Afghan Taliban leaders , who do not follow the "Pakistani Agenda". Hamid Karzai's father was a victim. And so is Hamid Karzai still in the cross-hairs of the Paki Deep State, because of his nationalistic views and his friendship with India !
For many in the Taliban, Mullah Mansour’s death represented a devastating betrayal by their longtime patron and sponsor, Pakistan that has split and demoralized the ranks.About two dozen senior commanders from Mullah Mansour’s Pashtun tribe have defected to the Afghan government or moved into Afghanistan in fear of further retribution from Pakistan.
The strike against Mullah Mansour was the first time a top Afghan Taliban leader had been killed inside Pakistan, which has provided a sanctuary for Taliban leaders throughout their 16-year insurgency against Afghanistan. At the time, President Barack Obama and other American officials and diplomats expressed satisfaction.“He was a prime target for the Americans and the Afghan government,” General Raziq said. “He was a terrorist.”

Would not be surprised if this "demand" came from the WB or IMF - as a pre-requisite to grant more loans to the insolvent Govt !To the displeasure of the bureaucracy working in Punjab, the Ernst & Young (E&Y) has been assigned the task of calculation of work load as well as the distribution of the superior executive allowance to be given to the senior and junior officers working in Punjab, The Nation has learnt. The Punjab government would pay approximately one billion rupees to the firm for its services, said the sources. The Secretary Finance Hamid Yaqoob Shaikh didn’t respond despite repeated attempts.
So, the already "underworked" Pakjabi Bureaucrats wanted to "drink more at the already depleted public trough"E&Y, one of the ‘big four’ accounting firms and one of the largest professional services firm is a multinational professional services firm headquartered in London. One of the four service lines of the E&Y includes an advisory role in Actuarial, IT Risk and Assurance, Risk, and Performance Improvement. Official sources in the Punjab Chief Minister’s office told that the provincial hierarchy could not satisfy the chief executive ( Shahbaz? ) on its proposal to allow executive allowance to other senior officers both from the federal and provincial services.
A proposal in the tenure of former Chief Secretary Punjab Khizar Hayat Gondal was floated and presented to the CM Punjab. In the presentation, the CM Shahbaz had made a query as how all the officers may be given equal allowances irrespective of their job nature. Then the officers presented a B-Plan that addressed the query but the CM Shahbaz was not satisfied. It was conveyed to the CM that officers performing hard assignments in big departments could be given more allowance as compared to those working in small departments like Zakat department etc. So, the "clever brother" is nickle and diming the "poor" bureaucrats , while there is no check on the "commissions" that he and Ganja are collecting on the millions and millions dollars worth of contracts that is being handed out in the name of the so-called gamechanger CPEC !
“The CM Punjab didn’t agree with the B-Plan as well and directed the concerned to hire the services of a well-reputed firm to calculate work load of departments as well as officers,” official sources said.“The job assigned to the foreign firm could be done by a committee comprising of the senior officers to save the huge amount of money being paid to the foreign firm,” said one of the senior secretaries in the Civil Secretariat. India based Consultancy Firms (with a solid reputation!) would have done the job at 1/10 the price charged by E&Y ! The fun will start when the E&Y preliminary team sent to Pakiland will inevitably include some Yindoo and RAA members (unless the Pakjab Govt specifically requests that they be "excluded" for national security reasons !
“We were demanding a small part of the amount being given to the firm hired for the purpose of calculating work load, ” said the officer adding the committee had held meetings with the officers and collected data. “It will waste time and money to the loss of the competent officers” he feared. It is to be learnt that the Punjab government notified an allowance to the chief secretary, administrative head of the government, to be given Rs 400,000 while the IGP Rs 375,000 other than their salaries. So, So, there is already a sense of loss of morale on this decision to outsource the study . Pay one billion to save "a couple of millions" . "Cutting your nose to spite your face" kind of situation !
Meanwhile, the executive allowance for other positions like administrative secretaries, Senior Member Board of Revenue (SMBR), P&D chairman, additional chief secretary, Anti-Corruption Establishment DG, CMIT chairman, director generals, additional secretaries, deputy secretaries were to be given handsome allowances after the nod of the CM office. A handsome amount of Rs 45,000 to Rs 300,000 was to be given to officers falling in different categories. While all this is being decided upon, the awaam are forced to drink contaminated water and "donkey meat" is openly sold in La-Whore market !
He said the Punjab government wanted to give the allowances to its top officers for the sensitivity of their job nature. They were 24/7 engaged officers but get much less than they deserved, he asserted. He said that junior officers of the S&GAD in different companies, authorities, and projects get in millions or lacs contrary to the administrative boss who was responsible for all the matters of the provincial government. Whether the "recommendations" of the "famous" consultancy firm (E &Y ) will be actually implemented is another question, in view of the current political turmoil and the departure of Shahbaz from provincial politics. . Most likely the report will be prepared and will gather dust like the earlier reports about "loss of the Eastern wing", and the report about OBL.

SHIKARPUR, Pakistan - The confession of a Pakistani teenager who was captured moments before carrying out a suicide attack has given police a rare glimpse into a militant network they say is behind the recent surge in sectarian violence.
Usman's testimony, a copy of which has been seen by Reuters, describes a web of radical seminaries and training and bomb making facilities stretching from eastern Afghanistan, where the young man was recruited, to Pakistan's southern Sindh province. Afghan Taliban suicide bombers make a reverse journey- recruit and train in Pakistan, and cause havoc in Afghanistan !
Hundreds of people have been killed in attacks on Pakistan's small Shi'ite community, heightening fears in the Sunni-dominated country of an escalation in sectarian bloodshed that has been a persistent threat for decades.Pakistani police believe the network, which Usman says aided him on his 2,000 km journey, has also helped Islamic State spread its extremist agenda in South Asia, even without proven operational links with its core in the Middle East. Now the "snakes", earlier groomed in the backyard are coming back to bite the "snake trainers"
Usman's confession does not name Islamic State directly, but police say they believe the network that recruited and trained him was behind five deadly sectarian bombings in Pakistan, four of which have been claimed by the group based in Syria and Iraq. Pakistan denies Islamic State presence on its soil. !
"ISIS (Islamic State) has no formal structure (in Pakistan). It works on a franchise system and that is the model that is being used in Pakistan," senior Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) officer Raja Umer Khattab told Reuters. By that he said he meant Islamic State could claim attacks as its own, even if it had no direct role in coordinating them. The "Franchisor" ( if you may call it that !) is of course, the Paki Deep State or AKA ISI
Usman, 18 at the time of the thwarted attack, is currently on death row in the town of Shikarpur, where he was caught. Reuters was unable to contact him for this story, but Usman's court-appointed lawyer said the family had shown no interest in the case. "I am not sure if an appeal has been filed against the sentence, since no one from his family ever turned up to even meet Usman," advocate Deedar Brohi told Reuters, adding that his client had been sentenced by an anti-terrorism court in March. "Family's interest" in the son, may also "invite" Deep State's harassment of the family !
Under interrogation, Usman, arrested last September, described his recruitment in the eastern Afghan province of Nangarhar, where U.S. and Afghan forces have been fighting a local offshoot of Islamic State estimated to number a few hundred fighters. Originally from the Pakistani valley of Swat, his family fled to Nangarhar after his father, a member of the Pakistani Taliban, was killed in a drone strike. Usman told investigators he came home one day to find his brother sitting with an older man. "My brother said that you should join jihad ... you should become a suicide bomber," Usman said in the confession. The elder brother was probably brainwashed under the auspices of Malsi !
He left that day and traveled with the older man by bus to the Afghan province of Kandahar, where they crossed into Pakistan's Baluchistan province. From there, they rode a motorcycle to the remote desert town of Wadh in southern Baluchistan, where Usman began his training and stayed at the home of a man called Maaz.
"In our room, Maaz took out explosives from a bag and prepared two suicide jackets," Usman told investigators.
Police suspect Wadh is where several militant movements, including al Qaeda, the Pakistani Taliban and other local banned groups, have been active. The media wing of Pakistan's military did not respond to requests for comment for this article, including how militants could use Wadh as hub. An intelligence official, who declined to be named because he was not authorized to speak to the press, denied Wadh was part of a militant network.
"No training camp in Wadh or safe (haven) for militants now," the official said in a Whatsapp message.
After about a month in Wadh, Usman said he traveled by motorcycle with an escort on dusty back roads to Shikarpur. A few days later, he was dispatched with his explosives vest to attack a prayer meeting attended by Shi'ite Muslims. The attack failed when one worshipper spoke to Usman in the local Sindhi language, which he could not understand. A crowd gathered and grabbed him before he could reach his detonator. So, it was only by "chance" that the attack failed !
Police investigators, who spoke about the case on condition of anonymity, said Usman's confession helped them identify several key militants including a suicide vest maker and the man who oversees the network - a former Pakistani intelligence services asset named Shafiq Mengal. "Our intelligence shows that he has 500-1,000 militants working under him and is living in the mountains," said a senior police official. Reuters was unable to contact Mengal or independently confirm the assertions of the police official. But his father, a prominent Baluch politician during the military regime of General Zia ul Haq in the 1980s, said his son had no links with militant networks. So, now he has "switched sides" and opposes the Paki Govt !
"Shafiq has not given shelter to any terrorist outfit and their activities," former Baluchistan chief minister Naseer Mengal told Reuters. However, the older Mengal added that his son had been active in supporting Pakistani security forces in battling Baluch separatist groups. "Shafiq fought against those elements who challenged the writ of State and were involved in target killings of innocent people and security forces," he said.
An internal police profile of Mengal seen by Reuters said he attended an elite school in the eastern city of Lahore before completing his education at a madrassa. According to the document, prepared by a Baluchistan police official, Mengal "was set up by the intelligence agencies to counter separatist Baloch militants" that fight the government in Baluchistan. Another "Ahmed Saeed Omar Sheikh", the triple agent and killer of Daniel Pearl. Only this time, the "would be agent" himself turned !
The report said that, more recently, it appeared Mengal shifted his efforts to helping jihadists. The intelligence official said Mengal no longer had any association with the military.. The armed forces have launched several major offensives against groups including al Qaeda and the Taliban in recent years, but they have also been accused of using militants as proxy fighters in Kashmir and Baluchistan - a charge they deny. But no one believes it
Police said another important suspect in the network was Hafeez Brohi, already on Pakistan's wanted terrorist list. He comes from Shikarpur, and it was at Brohi's residence that they said the teenager stayed before the failed attack.Usman did not name Brohi directly but said a man named Umer Hafiz, who police officials say was actually Brohi, took him from Wadh to Shikarpur by motorbike.Usman's police case file also identifies Brohi as one of the main suspects in the failed bombing. Case files seen by Reuters on several other sectarian attacks in Shikarpur also single him out.
The town itself, some 250 km east of Wadh but several times that distance by road, is seen as an increasingly important center of sectarian extremism, according to officials from the counter terrorism department. Two local Shi'ite mosques were targeted by attacks in 2015. Several new madrassas have been built in the area in recent years, and members of the Shi'ite minority suspect that they are used by Sunni hardliners to spread religious intolerance. "The madrassas are concentrated in remote villages," said Syed Atta Hussain Shah, the imam of the Shi'ite mosque in Shikarpur. "Preachers show up from elsewhere and stay in these madrassas and deliver hate-filled sermons."
Police officials said they suspected Brohi was the point man for the network in southern Sindh province and was involved in the bombing at Sehwan Sharif shrine that killed 90 people - the most deadly attack in Pakistan claimed by Islamic State. Brohi has been in hiding for the last three or four years, according to CTD officials. Usman was sentenced to death in March along with 10 militants in absentia, including Brohi. Shikarpur, once known for its Sindhi Hindu traders, used to be a crossroads or hub for trading . Now it has become another hub for killing Shias !
A Pakistani political party that once promised to cleanse the upper echelons of government from corruption is now falling apart over graft allegations among the members of its provincial administration.Four years ago, the Pakistan Tehreek-e Insaaf (PTI), or the movement for justice, swept the polls in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province promising to end big corruption and create a model for good governance in a country struggling with predatory politicians and crooked civil and military bureaucrats. The party’s firebrand leader and cricketer-turned-politician, Imran Khan, promised to eventually create a “new Pakistan” in the image of a “new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.” Imran Khan has been known to make bombastic statements . Some say that he suffers from "foot in mouth" disease
Not to mention "enriching" the provincial madrassahs by "bribing" them with "grants" to ensure that they make "no trouble" for PTI !Today, however, the party’s provincial administration is a mess. Its lawmakers and cabinet members accuse each other of graft. Such accusations imperil PTI’s provincial administration and cast a dark shadow over its fortunes in the parliamentary election scheduled for next year.As the chief minister or most senior elected official in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pervez Khattak is a target of mounting criticism. Former cabinet colleagues and PTI lawmakers are blaming the former contractor of making big bucks and enriching his relatives during his stint in power.
Ziaullah Afridi, a former minister for mines and minerals in Khattak’s cabinet, accused him of awarding a multimillion-dollar mining contract to a relative in violation of government rules. He also accused the chief minister of orchestrating a major financial scandal in a commercial bank operated by the provincial government.
Afridi wields a strong personal grudge against Khattak, who ordered his removal from office and arrest on graft charges in July 2015. Afridi spent several months in a prison and still faces several court cases. However, Afridi says he was sent to prison after confronting Khan with alleged evidence of Khattak’s corruption. “I told Khan several times that Khattak and his cronies are involved in large-scale corruption and that they are earning a bad name for the party and for him,” he told RFE/RL’s Gandhara website. “But I was always discouraged.” Immy is himself accused of corruption by his political opponents , so it is in his own interest to keep all of this "under wraps"
PTI is now embroiled in a major scandal after one of its female lawmakers, Ayesha Gulalai, accused Khan of sending her lewd text messages and doing little to stop Khattak’s corruption in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Gulalai also accused Khattak of acting like a mafia boss.“Khattak has nepotism in place, with his relatives benefiting from his stint in power,” she told journalists. “When I went to Imran and provided him with evidence of Khattak’s corruption, he cast it all aside.” As press reports have indicated , the feud between Gulalai and Imran has blown into a full fledged "he said, she said" battle in the court of (Paki) public opinion. The ( Paki ) jury is still out as to who is believable and who is not !
PTI insiders paint a grim picture of their party’s cohesion. They speak of increasing dissent against Khattak’s leadership. While lawmakers Javid Nasim, Qurban Ali Khan, and Ikramullah Khan Gandapur had expressed grievances against his leadership, Pakistani daily Dawn recently reported that key cabinet members Atif Khan and Shahram Khan Tarakai turned against him. The two also met Khan to convey their grievances. Immy has too much on his plate now. What with Nawaz's exit, his dirty laundry (private life) being openly discussed in public , and the suspicion that he has become a poster-boy and a cheer leader for the Paki military!. The last thing he wants is an "internal party revolt"
Khattak, however, is a political survivor. He is known to frequently change political parties by often joining ruling parties. He rejects corruption allegations against himself and is confident he will survive the revolt among his party’s ranks.“Nobody can bring down my administration,” Pakistan’s Geo News TV quoted him as saying on August 7. “I was the one responsible for propping up and toppling governments [in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa].”.PTI spokesman Fawad Chaudhry told RFE/RL’s Gandhara that Afridi presented no evidence in support of his allegations.
The party, however, faces a bumpy road ahead in the run-up to parliamentary elections next year. Voters are likely to judge its anti-corruption rhetoric in the light of its performance in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Immy's eyes are on the PM ship at the Federal level !
CheersOne myth that is paraded as a fact is that military rule has always ushered in an era of progress and prosperity for the country. The latest statement of the myth has been put forward by the former military ruler General (r) Pervez Musharraf.

On August 5, IMEWE, one of six international underwater cables responsible for bringing internet to Pakistan, was cut near Jeddah. With SEAMEWE 4 and TW1 already offline due to technical issues, the internet went down throughout the country.
Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), that regulates IMEWE and SEAMEWE 4, along with SEAMEWE 3—with the rest managed by Transworld Associates (TWA)—experienced choked bandwidth. “We require an NoC from the Ministry of Defence to allow work on any underwater cable,” ( Fear of RAA ) said a PTCL official. “It took us a month to get that for the cable that had been broken for a while.”
According to experts, cables can routinely develop faults. “There are land cables, sea cables and there are satellite links as well. It’s normal for there to be cuts in the cables,” said Khurram Ali Mehran, the PR director at the regulatory Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). “The traffic is then rerouted elsewhere, which takes time.”
With IMEWE, SEAMEWE 4 and TW1 offline, most of the data burden fell on the newly inaugurated 25,000km AAE-1, which started working July 2. “Such alternatives are critical. Government organisations and the Armed forces do not lose their connections, because they already have backup from TWA,” the TWA official said. “That’s the sort of mechanism that we need to devise for the rest of the country as well.” Hope the Foreign Cable Companies are demanding 100% upfront payment from the insolvent Pakis , before they "open the "internet pipeline"
Khurram Ali Mehran reiterates that work is already in progress. “There was a time when Pakistan only had one cable coming, now there are alternatives available. There is another cable coming from China to Rawalpindi.” The $44 million Pakistan-China Optical Fiber Cable Project, a part of CPEC, which includes an 820km long cable between Rawalpindi and Khunjrab will be inaugurated in two years. ( Chini blothel to the rescue !)
Much like other projects affiliated with the corridor, the overarching influence of Beijing is generating concern among rights groups. “Knowing China’s track record on surveillance and tight control over the internet through censorship, it is imperative that the Pakistani government makes transparent the terms of reference of this new proposed cable via China,” says Usama Khilji, director of Bolo Bhi. The long term plan, Pakistan is working towards is to emulate China style internet censorship, to protect "Malsi" and the so-called Paki Ideology !
“Nevertheless, this poses a further threat to internet freedom in Pakistan, especially after the introduction of the draconian PECA 16 (cybercrime law) that we see is being used to silence political dissent apart from its necessary use for punishing harassment over the Internet.” ( Chini input on this was most likely sought !)
However, Khurram Ali Mehran says linking a technical question to freedom of expression is ‘bizarre’.“China’s help in constructing the optical fibre cable is like a building a pipe that allows the flow of water – or a gas pipeline if you will,” he says. “What you do with the gas or water is your business.”
As per provisional results of much-delayed sixth population census, Pakistan has amassed a population of 210.31 million, thus registering an increase of 70.87 million since 1998, reported Roznama Dunya on Friday.
If population of Azad and Jammu Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan is also included, then figures augment to mammoth 210.90 million.
OK, who had 210 M? I will have to check my previous posts. Also, didn't some paki claim that KPK could not be fully counted because of raddi-und-fasad?When approached for confirmation, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) neither declined nor confirmed the news.
If you ask Steve Bannon how he got the idea that Muslims in the Middle East are a civilizational threat to America, he will say that his eyes were first opened when he served on a Navy destroyer in the Arabian Sea. At least that’s what he told the journalist Joshua Green, whose new book about President Donald Trump’s senior counselor is a best-seller.“It was not hard to see, as a junior officer, sitting there, that [the threat] was just going to be huge,” Bannon said. He went on:
We’d pull into a place like Karachi, Pakistan – this is 1979, and I’ll never forget it – the British guys came on board, because they still ran the port. The city had 10 million people at the time. We’d get out there, and 8 million of them had to be below the age of fifteen. It was an eye-opener. We’d been other places like the Philippines where there was mass poverty. But it was nothing like the Middle East. It was just a complete eye-opener. It was the other end of the earth. That’s Bannon’s version. There are a few problems with it, however.
The port of Karachi was not run by the British in 1979. Karachi, which is the commercial hub of Pakistan, had a population that was well short of 10 million (it was about half that) and is not usually considered part of the Middle East. But the biggest problem is that the destroyer Bannon served on, the USS Paul F. Foster, never visited Karachi while Bannon was aboard. According to this author, Bannon made all this up !
Six sailors who served on the Foster with Bannon told The Intercept that the vessel did not stop at Karachi during its 1979-1980 deployment. The recollections of these enlisted men and officers are supported by the ship’s deck logs, which show no stop on the way to the Arabian Sea and are available to the public at the National Archives. And a map of the Foster’s port calls that was published in its “cruisebook” shows stops in Hawaii, Guam, the Philippines, Christmas Island, Hong Kong, and Singapore — but not Karachi. It turns out that Bannon, who has drawn a large amount of criticism for his exclusionary stances on race, religion, and immigration, has also inaccurately described his military service, simultaneously creating an erroneous narrative of how he came to an incendiary anti-Muslim worldview that helps shape White House policy. This author, of course implies that the "Muslim Threat" is exaggerated !
It’s not clear whether Bannon’s account of visiting Karachi is an intentional fabrication or a false memory that reflects his subconscious fears, or something else entirely. Whatever the reason, it raises a lot of questions. Bannon did not respond to several inquiries from The Intercept. A close friend of Bannon’s who is in regular contact with him, and spoke on the condition of not being named, said Bannon had not read Green’s book and that the quotes attributed to him had not been checked with him. Green, the author, told The Intercept that the interview with Bannon occurred in 2015 and was recorded and transcribed. Whatever may be the merits of this, important to know that Islamic Threat is real, although the Bannon trip might be "imaginary"
