On the bmpd side, we recall that the company "Kronstadt", part of AFK "Sistema" (called Transas until 2015), is engaged in the creation of the Orion UAV in the framework of the development work (ROC) "Inohodets". The created UAV belongs to the class of medium-altitude apparatus of long flight duration. It is assumed that the maximum flight duration will be at least 24 hours, and the ceiling - about 8000 meters.

In October 2011, the Russian Ministry of Defense entered into a contract with the Transas company for the development of the "Inohodets" experimental design for the creation of a reconnaissance UAV with a mass of about 1 ton. In 2015, at MAKS-2015, the former president of the Transas group of companies Nikolai Lebedev said that the actual takeoff weight of the Orion UAV is 1,200 kilograms, the payload weight is 300 kilograms.

According to the known data, the flight tests of the first prototype UAV "Orion" were launched in the spring of 2016. It is known that in the summer and autumn of 2016 the prototype apparatus was tested at the aerodrome of the Flight Research Institute named after M.M. Gromov in the Zhukovsky.

ZHUKOVSKY, July 20. /TASS/. Russia will develop a family of air-launched precision cruise missiles before 2020 that will be capable of striking targets at a distance of up to 1,000 kilometers, Tactical Missiles Corporation CEO Boris Obnosov said on Thursday.

"Work is under way on a new family of items with a range of 200km, 400km, 600km and 1,000km. That is why, work in this area is being carried out. I believe that before 2020 we’ll surely roll out this family of items [missiles]," Obnosov said at the MAKS-2017 airshow, responding to a question about whether Russia was developing the analog of the US JASSM high precision long-range cruise missile.
As the Tactical Missiles Corporation head said, one missile can’t engage all the targets. "In some cases, it is inefficient to cover a longer range," he said, explaining the need to develop a whole family of missiles.
The US JASSM high precision cruise missile is intended to strike well-protected stationary and relocatable targets in any weather conditions and at any time of the day from distances off the enemy’s air defenses’ reach. It has a radius of operation of 370 km (JASSM-ER has an operational radius of up to 1,000 km). The missile is capable of delivering 450kg warheads.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed off on a new state policy strategy for his navy that views the U.S. as aspiring to dominate the world’s oceans in a threat to Russia.

The strategy, in effect as of Thursday—the day Putin signed it—sheds more light into where Russia’s fleet sees potential for international friction and conflict. Among the direct naval threats for Russia falls “the striving of a series of governments, above all the United States of America and its allies to dominate the oceans, including in the Arctic and also to reach an intimidating supremacy with its naval forces.”

The strategy outline, binding until 2030, adds to previous statements from Russian navy officials who have designated the Arctic a priority development area for Moscow. The Arctic and the globe’s resource-rich northernmost are the subject of claims by Russia and four other countries, all of whom are U.S. allies.

In the 22-page navy document, intended as the policy foundation for future Russian military activities, the Kremlin’s ambitious self-image is clear. “The Russian Federation continues to retain its status as a great naval state, whose naval potential ensures the defensive of its national interests in any part of the World Ocean,” the paper declares.

The document claims that other countries are trying to “limit Russia’s access to resources at sea and its access to vitally important naval transport communications,” a copy of Putin’s decree on Russia’s official legal documents database said.

The picture painted by the new strategy is one of a wider conspiracy to “reduce the effectiveness” of Russia’s navy through “economic, political, legal and military pressure on Russia.”

Meanwhile the world is in for a rough ride by 2030, the document warns, predicting “an unstable military-political environment, characterized by the increase of global competition, rivalry in the world power centers” due both to the rise of extremism and international power plays.

Russia’s navy is “one of the most effective tools of strategic (nuclear and non-nuclear) containment, including in preventing a global strike,” Putin’s decree said.

Russian Helicopters unveils Mi-171Sh-VN gunship

The Russian Helicopters holding, a subsidiary of the Rostec state corporation, has unveiled a new variant of the Mi-171Sh (Hip-H) utility helicopter reconfigured for special operations. Designated Mi-171Sh-VN, the helicopter was unveiled at the MAKS 2017 airshow at Zhukovsky, outside Moscow.

The Mi-171Sh-VN is designed to be more combat effective and survivable than the basic model. “The helicopter has been developed based on combat experience, including in Syria,” Russian Helicopters CEO Andrey Boginsky told Jane's . It will be marketed worldwide as the Mi-171Sh.

According to its official specifications, the Mi-171Sh-VN has a maximum take-off weight of 13,500 kg, a maximum payload of 4,000 kg, a ferry range of 1,065 km, a service ceiling of 6,000 m, a maximum speed of 280 km/h, and a cruising speed of 260 km/h. The aircraft has a crew of three and can transport up to 37 people. The Mi-171Sh-VN is powered by two engines with a power output of 1,900 hp each. It has composite main rotor blades and an X-type tail rotor.

Why Russia's Once Superpower Navy Is in Big Trouble

If Moscow built every ship that they had promised to build over the past decade, then the Russian Navy would indeed become a world class fleet. The Russian national security state thrives on the announcement of big projects, but not so much on their fulfillment. The actual record of Russian surface ship construction is, by international standards, rather grim.

The biggest successes of Russian shipbuilding have been the Admiral Grigorovich (4,000 tons) and the Admiral Gorshkov (5,400 tons) frigates.

The former have endured construction times of roughly seven years; the latter of nine or so years. Two Grigorovich frigates have entered service, with four more under construction. The first Gorshkov should enter service sometime later this year, with three more on the way.

By contrast, it took the British about six years to construct the Type 45 destroyers; the Americans about four for an Arleigh Burke; the Japanese four years for an Atago; and the Chinese about four for a Type 052D.

All of these ships are roughly twice the size of the frigates Russia is struggling to complete.


The twelve ships of the Lider class, a proposed 17,000 ton destroyer, could easily replace the existing cruisers and destroyers of the fleet, but there is little indication that the Kremlin plans to lay these ships down, much less complete them in a reasonable timeframe. Russia’s recent economic crisis has made naval construction an ever harder sell.

The speed with which Russia churns out diesel-elec subs is astonishing,esp. Kilo 636.3s,the latest avatar of the kilo.It took just 14 months from keel-laying to float out the Krasnodar which also took part in Kalibir missile strikes against ISIS in Syria on its way to home port! Russia is building several (12) new Kilo boats for its various fleets,delivered all 6 Vietnam's Kilos ,with Indonesia another prospect.If the IN is serious about a rapid increase in sub numbers,acquiring at least on lease,a few more Kilos will help plug the huge gap in comp. with China/Pak.

Krasnodar’s passage has continued four months, which is a certain record for the Black Sea Fleet, the commander said, adding that in the future submarines will have longer passages.

A keel-laying ceremony for Project 636.3 diesel-electric submarine (SSK) Krasnodar took place on February 20, 2014 at the Admiralty Shipyard in St. Petersburg. The submarine was floated out on April 25, 2015.

Russia's Black Sea Fleet
The Project 636.3 (Varshavyanka-class) covers the third generation of diesel-electric submarines that are among the most noiseless underwater cruisers in the world.
They are capable of developing a surface speed of up to 20 knots and dive to a depth of 300 meters. They have a cruising capacity of 45 days and a crew of 52.
The Project 636.3 submarine displaces about 4,000 tonnes in its underwater position.
The first series of six such Project 636.3 Varshavyanka-class submarines have already been delivered to the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
Six Varshavyanka-class submarines for the Pacific Fleet are planned to be built before 2022.

Russia reveals Il-22PP special missions aircraft
Russia has shown for the first time its new Ilyushin Il-22PP Porubshchik special mission aircraft. The ‘escort jammer’ aircraft made its public debut on the occasion of the 105th anniversary of the Russian air force over Kubinka on 12 August.

The Il-22P is a signals intelligence (SIGINT) and stand-off-jamming platform that has been built around a converted Il-22 ‘Coot-B’ airframe, which is itself a theatre-level airborne command post and radio relay aircraft based on the Ilyushin Il-18D turboprop airliner.

While the Il-22PP retains the airframe and power plant of the Il-22, it has four large fairings located symmetrically on both sides of the fuselage. These contain antennas of the L-415 electronic countermeasures (ECM) system made by the KNIRTI institute of Kaluga. Another antenna is fitted to the tail, while a further antenna is located under the fuselage. A fixed pod beneath the fuselage contains 16 32-round 26 mm UV-26M chaff/flare launchers for self defence; two more 14-round 50 mm (2-inch) launchers are built into the under-fuselage. The aircraft has a livery resembling that of the civilian Aeroflot airline, although it carried the inscription ‘Russia Air Force’ and the red star marking. It also has the inscription 'Il-18' on the nose.

According to the Myasishchev design bureau, which is responsible for the conversion, "the airplane is intended for detection and suppression of state-of-the-art secretive and jam-proof systems of combat control of various functions". These are "radars, guidance channels of surface-to-air missile systems, mid-course flight path correction channels of cruise missiles, as well as tactical data exchange networks such as Link 16.

Just posted in the IN td.,deal for the extra Talwars almost over.2+2 being negotiated.2 to be completed in Russia and 2 built in India.That would make 10.Building a couple more would bring down costs as this FFG appears to be the workhorse of the IN.

Any idea of the IA's future combat soldier and his equip? The last titbit I read was maily about providing the helmet with better protection.Nothing about body armour,etc.

MOSCOW, November 5. /TASS/. Russian Ground Forces’ military intelligence officers will receive the specialized version of the Ratnik equipment, the Defense Ministry’s press service told journalists on Saturday on the occasion of the Intelligence Officer Day in Russia.
"Active work continues in the Ground Forces to equip intelligence units with the newest technical means of intelligence, special small arms, equipment of the new generation," the press service said. They include Orlan and Eleron drones, radiolocation stations and intelligence systems Fara-VR, Sobolyatnik-O and Strelets, as well as "Ratnik military equipment specially adapted for intelligence units," the defense ministry noted.
The Ratnik is a system of advanced protective and communication equipment, weapons and ammunition. It comprises around 40 protective and life support elements, such as bulletproof helmets and body armor, waterproof overalls and hearing, eye, elbow and knee protections among other things. MOSCOW, August 23. /TASS/. A contract for the delivery of Russia’s advanced Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets to Indonesia has been fully agreed, Indonesia’s Ambassador to Russia Wahid Supriyadi said on Wednesday.
"All of the contract’s details have been agreed. The Indonesian defense minister is set to invite a Russian representative to sign the contract. This is a matter of time," the envoy said, noting that the deal should be concluded before the end of this year.

The Su-35 is a Russian-made multipurpose generation 4++ super-maneuverable fighter jet equipped with a phased array radar and steerable thrusters. It can develop a speed of up to 2,500 kilometers per hour and has a flying range of 3,400 kilometers and a combat radius close to 1,600 kilometers. The fighter jet is armed with a 30mm gun and has 12 hardpoints for carrying bombs and missiles.

TASS highlights Russia’s extensive efforts to create state-of-the-art naval technologies

MOSCOW, July 28. /TASS/. Russia’s Navy is gradually upgrading its hardware, as new surface ships and submarines are built and naval aviation planes enter duty. Alongside the well-reputed naval technologies some fundamentally new ideas or dramatic solutions unduly neglected in the past are coming to the forefront.

Planes

At Russia’s just-ended MAKS-2017 air show Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov broke the news that the Defense Ministry was discussing with aircraft manufacturers the possibility of creating a vertical takeoff and landing plane for an aircraft carrier of the future.

"The Defense Ministry’s plans, the long-term ones likely to be implemented toward the end of the 2018-2025 state program for armaments, include a project for building a new aircraft carrier. A new generation of planes is to become available by then… Also on the Defense Ministry’s plans that we are discussing with our aircraft manufacturers is the creation of a short takeoff and landing (STAL) aircraft. Possibly, it will be a vertical takeoff and landing plane," Borisov said.
The United Aircraft Corporation has not yet received any terms of reference for such planes but UAC chief Yuri Slyusar says he knows about such plans.
"We are waiting for the customer to formulate proposals. We are aware of such plans. For now the work on finalizing the plane’s shape and the expected technical parameters has not been completed yet," Slyusar said.

Yak-141 supersonic vertical takeoff and landing jet

The Yakovlev Design Bureau worked on a multirole supersonic vertical takeoff and landing jet Yak-141 for many years since the mid-1970s. The plane made its first flight in 1987. The original intention was Yak-141 would arm the group of heavy aircraft-carrying cruisers The Novorossiysk, The Baku (eventually turned into The Admiral Gorshkov), The Tbilisi (The Admiral Kuznetsov), The Riga (The Varyag) and The Ulyanovsk. Yak-141 made its first landing on an aircraft carrier’s deck in 1991. In 2003 the project was closed down.

GEV or ekranoplan
Research is in progress again into such an unusual means of transportation as the ground effect vehicle GEV (also known as the flying wing or ekranoplan). Research into this aircraft technology in the Soviet Union and Russia has been conducted all the time only by one organization - the Alekseyev Central Hydrofoil Design Bureau - which delivered its unique missile-carrying GEV vehicle Lun (Russian for Harrier) and the amphibious vehicle Orlyonok.

Earlier, the chief of Russia’s Naval Aviation, Major-General Igor Kozhin, said that the Defense Ministry hoped to have at its disposal someday a GEV able to carry a payload of up to 300 tonnes.
"I believe that by 2020 we will have a real platform capable of rather effective operation… It will carry 240-300 tonnes of cargoes. It will be a unique naval transport vehicle in its own right," he said.
General Kozhin said the Russian Navy was in the process of altering the GEV development concept, adding that the flying wings were well applicable over the sea and ocean surface but far less effective over rivers.

The Alekseyev Design Bureau’s board chairman Georgy Antsev has told TASS the work on a future universal military GEV was still in the sketch design phase.
"The Defense Ministry is conducting extensive research in this field. The Alekseyev Bureau is creating a universal GEV platform. We’ve conducted some research and today we can present several projects at our own initiative - several platforms capable of carrying 80-tonne and 60-tonne payloads," Antsev said.

Helicopters
The work on a future naval helicopter Minoga (the project was first presented to the public at large in 2015) is proceeding on schedule. Kozhin told TASS that the Kamov Design Bureau in 2020 will produce a fundamentally new helicopter for the Russian Navy.
In the long term Minoga is to replace the multi-role deck helicopter Ka-27, whose main task is to spot, track and destroy enemy submarines. Kozhin said the project had already emerged from the sketch design phase. The helicopter’s dimensions will fit naval standards and its fuselage will be equipped with weapons-carrying modules.

The project is in the technical design phase. The helicopter’s configuration and composition and its individual parts and mechanisms are acquiring the final shape. According to sources in the defense-industrial complex and its takeoff mass will be smaller than that of the Ka-27 (the latter’s maximum takeoff mass is 12 tonnes).
Kamov’s general designer, Sergey Mikheyev, has told TASS, he hoped Minoga would begin to be produced serially in about ten years from now.
"This is not a rumor. A decision has been made that Kamov, a manufacturer with great expertise in making deck helicopters should get down to work on this project. Research and development has just begun. I believe it will take ten years," Mikheyev said.
Drones
The Russian Navy expects the defense industry to provide a universal helicopter that might be used as a drone.

"We are looking into this matter. In principle, we have certain ideas and technical solutions regarding the creation of a universal helicopter - a base platform that can be promptly rearmed for performing different tasks - from submarine chasing to assault operations.
New generation helicopters will have unmanned configurations.
"Creating unmanned deck aircraft is one of the major challenges facing the specialists of our leading design bureaus," Kozhin said without disclosing any dates.
A new generation of patrol planes is about to materialize soon to replace the current Ilyushin-38N. All in all the Russian Navy’s aviation component is to get about 100 new aircraft by 2020. In 2016 it obtained ten planes of different class and 20 upgraded deck helicopters Ka-27.

Amphibious assault ships
Advanced research into ships for the Navy’s surface component is focused on several major projects, including a new generation amphibious ship included in the program for armaments extending till 2025.
Nevskoye Design Bureau CEO Sergey Vlasov earlier told TASS several types of such naval ships had been proposed. The most promising one is in the pre-project research phase. Its look will be fundamentally new in contrast to classical naval shipbuilding traditions.
Amphibious ships vary. There are helicopter carriers, multi-purpose amphibious ships and helicopter-carrying amphibious dock ships. I reckon it will be multi-role amphibious ship, something like Mistral, but of a somewhat different shape," he said.
Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov told the media Russia’s first helicopter carrier would hopefully be delivered by 2022 but avoided specifying the type of the ship. Apart from the unnamed Nevsky Design Bureau’s project another project often mentioned is the helicopter carrier Priboi, proposed by the Krylov Research Center. A model of the universal amphibious ship Priboi with a displacement of 14,000 tonnes was first displayed at the forum Army-2015.

Destroyer
The 2018-2025 state program for armaments incorporates design work on a future destroyer called Leader. As a source at the international naval show in St. Petersburg told TASS the ship would begin to be built in 2025.
The project Leader is being developed at the Northern Design Bureau in St. Petersburg. The Defense Ministry has already given its consent to the ship’s sketch design.
The Leader’s parameters have not been disclosed so far. According to sources in the defense industry the ship may have a displacement of 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes. The destroyer may armed with Kalibr or Oniks cruise missiles and the naval configuration of the S-500 missile system. The Russian Navy’s Deputy Chief Viktor Bursuk said the ships of the Leader project will have a nuclear power plant.

Submarines
In the submarine segment fifth-generation subs, to be designed and built under the 2018-2025 state program for armaments, are of the greatest interest. Some of the submarines will be nuclear powered and others, non-nuclear ones.

The vice-president of the United Shipbuilding Corporation for naval projects, Igor Ponomaryov, says a preliminary project of a fifth generation non-nuclear submarine has been finalized and coordination of the technical design aspects of the project is underway.
The Russian Navy’s deputy commander, Vice-Admiral Aleksandr Fedotenkov, earlier said the project would be codenamed Kalina. Fifth generation non-nuclear submarines will first be built for the Northern and Baltic Fleets. Two types of non-nuclear submarines are being made for the Russian Navy at the moment - project 636.3 Varshavyanka and 677 Lada.
At the recent international naval show in St. Petersburg it was announced that two Lada submarines had been ordered. With this time this small and quietest submarine in the Russian Navy will constitute the backbone of the non-nuclear submarine force.
The image of a future fifth generation nuclear submarine Husky and its sketch design are to be finalized within two years. Currently, Russia builds a series of multirole fourth generation submarines Yasen and strategic missile-carrying submarines Borei.

Russia tests sixth-generation fighter elements on fifth-generation jet

Separate elements of Russia’s sixth-generation fighter are already being tested on fifth-generation - Sukhoi PAK FA fighters (Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation), Vladimir Mikheyev, advisor to the First Deputy Director General of Concern Radio-Electronic Technologies (KRET, a subsidiary of Rostec State Corporation) told TASS in an interview Monday.
Back in early March reports stated that work on the sixth-generation fighter aircraft had begun, with the fighter’s manned and unmanned versions under development. The fighter prototype is expected to perform its maiden flight prior to 2025. That said, KRET is currently working on electronic warfare (EW) systems for the new warplane. Meanwhile, Russia is testing the fifth-generation fighter PAK FA (also known as T-50) that had carried out its maiden flight in 2010. State tests for the T-50 are scheduled to be completed in 2016, and in 2017, followed by mass deliveries of these fighters to the army.
"Standalone solutions that will be applied in the sixth-generation fighter are now being tested on the fifth-generation jet as well as on the ground-based equipment. Separate elements of the flight and navigation system have already been installed on PAK FA", Mikheyev said.
According to him, the sixth-generation fighters will be fitted with a unified electronic warfare system, which will serve as a radar, an electronic warfare system, a data transmission system and as communications equipment. Additionally, it will function as a navigation system and as an IFF transponder.

"The PAK FA radar station should operate both as a locator and reconnaissance system, and the electronic warfare system for its part should engage in radio detection and location. That is, integration and redistribution of functions on the PAK FA is already happening," the KRET representative said.
According to him, the use of integrated avionics is tested on many aircraft. As an example, he cited the US fifth-generation fighter, the F-35.
The PAK FA aircraft is a stealthy, single-seat, twin-engine jet fighter, and will be the first operational aircraft in Russian service to use stealth technology. It is a multipurpose fighter designed for the air superiority and attack roles. The fighter is planned to have super-cruise, stealth, super-maneuverability and advanced avionics to overcome the prior generation of fighter aircraft as well as ground and maritime defenses. The PAK FA is intended to be the successor to the MiG-29 and Su-27 in the Russian Air Force and serve as the basis for the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft being co-developed by Sukhoi and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force.

MURMANSK, August 30. /TASS/. The AS-34 deep-submergence rescue vehicle (DSRV) of the Northern Fleet’s Search and Rescue Department has set a submersion record, having reached a depth of 1,000 meters during tests. This is a record-breaking level for the Northern Fleet’s DSRVs, Head of the Search and Rescue Department, Captain 1st rank Vladimir Gorban told reporters on Wednesday.
"The AS-34 deep-submergence vehicle has hit a depth of 1,005 meters in the northwest Norwegian Sea. Never before has a Northern Fleet’s rescue vehicle reached such depths," Gorban emphasized.

The AS-34 was taken on with a submersion depth limit after the tests. This was due to the fact that the tests were carried out in the Motovsky Gulf where the depths are not particularly deep and vessels cannot submerge to lower levels there. However, technical specifications for special-purpose submarines like the AS-34 make it possible to operate under heavier pressures.
So, a decision was taken to carry out tests in the Norwegian Sea. The training program included an obligatory set of exercises for surface and underwater maneuvering, underwater navigation and search for "sunken" objects at near ultimate depths.
A thorough preparation preceded the test. The equipment was checked for both the DSRV and the Georgy Titov rescue vessel. The AS-34’s crew - five people led by Captain Lieutenant Roman Yevmenov - had also been trained.
The AS-34 reached a depth of a little more than 1 km on the first try. "The rescue vehicle has performed in the best possible way. All systems and mechanisms were operating without any failures, and the crew acted in a highly professional way," Gorban noted.
The DSRV will soon be used in exercises to provide help to a submarine lying on the sea bed that will be carried out in the Ein Bay of the Motovsky Gulf in the Barents Sea.

MOSCOW, August 31. /TASS/. Russia’s Defense Ministry has received another Tupolev Tu-160 (NATO reporting name: Blackjack) strategic missile carrier after its repair and upgrade, the press office of the Tupolev Aircraft Company, part of the United Aircraft Corporation, said on Thursday.
"The Tupolev Company transferred a Tu-160 plane to the Defense Ministry of Russia on August 28. The strategic missile carrier underwent major overhaul with the first-stage upgrade," the company said.

The Tupolev Aircraft Company also transferred two more modernized Tu-95MS (Bear) strategic bombers to the Defense Ministry.
"First-stage modernization work was carried out on the turbo-prop strategic missile carriers. In early July, a Tu-22M3 was transferred for operation after its repairs and upgrade at the enterprise. The modernized Tu-160, Tu-95MS and Tu-22M3 aircraft have undergone the required ground-based and flight tests in full," the Tupolev press office said.
All the required work has been conducted on the aircraft transferred to the Tupolev Company for modernization and all operational acceptance flights have been performed and the aircraft have been delivered to their aerodromes, the press office reported.
Tu-160 and Tu-95MS strategic bombers
It was reported in 2015 that Russia had made a decision to resume the production of Tu-160 bombers in their upgraded Tu-160M2 modification and reschedule the development of the new-generation bomber PAK DA (Perspective Airborne Complex of Long-Range Aviation) to a later term.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that the serial production of Tu-160M2 bombers should begin in 2023. The Russian Aerospace Force intends to purchase no less than 50 such aircraft. The Aerospace Force commander-in-chief said earlier that the Tu-160M2 might take to the skies for the first time already in late 2018.

The Tu-160 is the Soviet strategic missile carrier armed with cruise missiles that can carry nuclear warheads. Along with the Tu-95MS missile carrier, the Tu-160 makes part of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces along with the ground-based missile systems and submarines.
According to data from public sources, the Russian Aerospace Force currently operates 16 such aircraft built during the Soviet period. About a half of these bombers has already undergone repairs and modernization.
The United Aircraft Corporation reported earlier that the Russian industry would modernize over ten Tu-95MS strategic bombers in 2015-2016.
Russia’s Aerospace Force currently operates several dozen Tu-95MS bombers armed with Kh-55 strategic cruise missiles.

The Xian Aircraft Corporation (XAC) H-6K bomber proved its capabilities during the Aviadarts 2017 competition held earlier this month in China, edging out the Russian Tu-22M3/M3M Backfire in the bomber category. Chinese analysts credit the win to newer navigation systems and targeting radar, as well as rigorous aircrew training.

Legacy TU-22s are being upgraded,as well as Blackjacks and Bears.Read the report.New avionics,EW,are being fitted bringing the aircraft upto current stds.40-50 new Blackjacks alone to be built.Dozens of Backfires and Bears still exist,many in mint mothballed condition.Like the Akulas,we could lease a dozen modernised Backfires for 10 years and either upgrade our Bears if possible,or return them to Russia who are still using them."Old lamps for new".It would really be a champagne/vodka and caviar moment when India gets its own strategic/maritime bombers.
