@UB-saar, Singha-saar,
Thanks for the info. If Deir az Zor is relieved, what comes next? Idlib? Or will they try to take full control of the Euphrates valley?

euphrates valley is #1 priority - population , oil , water, roads into iraq , strategic location. it is a must-do mission.

Idlib will be sorted out later with turkish help in double and triple crossing the affected jihadis. the russians 'manage relations' with various groups therein and will likely pay off some factions to go after the others. AQ (nusra) will be hit, that even the US agrees and the EU is fervently praying more of these do not migrate west.

though its never officially acknowledged the NYT article i posted means there are track2 links even between mortal enemies like ISIS and hezbollah and they do strike small deals if only for tactical benefits and to settle accounts later. the senior IRGC gent whose body was returned was part of a small unit (3 ppl i think) of hezbollah killed somewhere in between sukhnah and T2 in the initial days of the advance into that desert region.

i feel its likely the assad govt and isis had a track2 'deal' of sorts for neither side to bombard the civilian areas of DEZ and restrict fighting to combat unit areas only and perhaps even pay isis a ransom to keep things like limited kerosene for cooking stoves, telecom service and subsistence food to be provided ..... for a city in war for 5 years it does not look like aleppo did. amaq did not show the widespread use of hell cannons that made life hell in aleppo for years, which they very well could have used from their parts of the town. ISIS perhaps wanted to rule the town and gain subjects than rule over a wasteland.

none of it will be officially acknowledged though.

Uqayribat has fallen despite wide use of women and children suicide bombers and the last Hama pocket is now splintered into 3 parts. saa are swarming over the surrounding areas and trying to hunt down any remaining mainline units.

I would give it a week looking at rugged nature of area and extensive IEDs clearing ops.

but effectively the ISIS reign over central syrian hills is over...formalities (upcharikta) are left.

the main column from sukhnah is moving ahead on highway toward ash sholah to link up with tigers who struck cross country and on small roads. isis probably withdrew all units to euphrates. T2 should fall soon.

No updates on Twitter. RT.com says SAA "ready to enter" D-e-Z

The key Euphrates city of Deir ez-Zor has been under terrorist siege for two and a half years, after being cut off from government-held areas in May 2015 during the jihadists’ offensive on Palmyra. The surrounded city, alongside a neighboring military base and airfield, have since been supplied with food and ammunition via airdrops by Russian and Syrian transport planes and helicopters.

On Sunday, the Syrian Army attacked IS barricades on the southwestern outskirts of the city, Sana news agency reported, killing several terrorists and seizing their weapons and ammunition.

“We carried out at dawn a successful raid against one of ISIS terrorists’ barricades in the direction of the Water Resources area through crawling and infiltrating it and throwing several bombs when we almost approached the area, killing all the terrorists at the site,” one of the soldiers told Sana.

The Syrian Army units have also expanded control in al-Badia, “eliminating the last gatherings of the organization in Hreibsha area that is located in the southwest of Deir Ezzor province.” According to Sana news agency, many terrorists have fled as the army is also advancing east of al-Sukhneh toward Deir ez-Zor.

ISIL militants are still attempting to stop the advancement of the Syrian troops by relocating to the Deir ez-Zor region armor, pick-up trucks with high-caliber machine guns mounted on them, weapons and ammunition. They are creating fortifications with positions for artillery and mortars,” the Russian Defense Ministry reported Saturday.

In response, the Russian forces in Syria intensified airstrikes on the jihadists, destroying their armored vehicles, tanks, artillery positions and supply depots.

Despite massive redeployment of fighters and military hardware by the Islamic State terrorists from other parts of Iraq and Syria to Deir ez-Zor, the Syrian Army, with the help of the Russian Air Force, has been advancing toward the city on several fronts.

Two Russian contract soldiers have been killed in Syria in mortar shelling by Islamic State terrorists, the Russian defense ministry said on Monday
According to the ministry, the servicemen were escorting a motor convoy of the Russian center for reconciliation of the warring parties.

“The motor convoy came under mortar shelling by Islamic State terrorists in the province of Deir ez-Zor. As a result of shelling, one serviceman was killed and another one was badly wounded,” the ministry said. “The wounded serviceman was promptly taken to hospital but died of deadly wounds, despite efforts taken by medics.”

The men were recommended for state decorations.

instead of a low key linked x-country at brigade 137 base, the syrians are probably waiting for the main relief column with food trucks and armour from the Ash sholah side which would be around 15km off by now and proceeding with caution against mines and VBIED attacks. Gen Mohd Khaddour would be there to lead it in and I guess Tiger will fly in on his gazelle helicopter. senior govt officials from Damascus might also fly in to lift morale.

ISIS might try some surprise attack like unleashing a swarm of VBIED from north or south so none can let their guard down. they will have to clear some areas around the town to declare things safe for the residents. the eastern shore of the river with suburbs and farms will need clearing soon.

lots to do...

Peshmerga forces, a military force of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, have executed a high number of ISIS members that had surrendered to or had been captured by Kurdish units north of the recently liberated town of Tal Afar in northern Iraq.

According to reports, the number of killed ISIS members is up to 400.

If it’s officially confirmed, this will be a major blow to the public image of Kurdish forces in Iraq.

Furthermore, the mass execution could easily boost support to ISIS and to trigger a series of terrorist attacks against soft targets in the Iraqi Kurdistan.

SF does not release alleged photos of the incident. However, they could be easily found online
