Remember the good ol' days (last year's yaawn! article thought so) when pakis regretfully believed they would grow to 240 Million momeens by 2030? At current 2.1% growth rate, that figure is likely to be 271 Million yahoos by 2030, if we are to believe the recent census (which not many people do). With 60% of the bulk being young and restless, imagine the possibilities (note the operative word)! Yay!

Deep State's "Strategic Asset" Being Treated As "Leper" By Election Commission Of Pakistan

ECP refuses to recognise JuD’s political front
ISLAMABAD / LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday refused to recognise the Milli Muslim League (MML) — a political front of the Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) — as a legitimate political party and warned electoral candidates not to use the party’s name in election campaigns. Times are tough for Pakistan. POTUS is making threatening noises. The unexpected BRICS declaration on terrorism caught the mandarins in Isloo by surprise. Asif is busy "seeing assurances" from Chini fliends. The last thing Pakistan needs, right now is putting a "stamp of approval" on JUD
In Lahore, the returning officer (RO) for the by-poll in NA-120 restrained Sheikh Mohammad Yaqoob from displaying photos of the proscribed organisation’s leaders on his campaign banners. A spokesperson for the ECP clarified that Mr Yaqoob, who was contesting the by-poll as an independent candidate, had been allotted the symbol of an energy saver. He said action would be taken under the ECP’s code of conduct if Mr Yaqoob failed to comply with the returning officer’s directives. The "fair name" of Pakistan cannot be allowed to be sullied !

Pakistan PM opens China-backed fifth nuke plant - PTI
Power-starved Pakistan on Friday received a major boost as a China-backed 340 MW nuclear power plant in its Punjab province was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi.

The fifth nuclear plant C-4 plant is located at Chashma in Mianwali district of the Punjab province. The project has been completed with the support and cooperation of China.

No outages after November

Mr. Abbasi said that the nuclear plants were a source of cheap energy and Pakistan would work on setting up more such plants. He said the government was completing all energy projects on a fast-track basis to tackle the chronic energy shortages. He has already promised that there would be no power shortage after November.

Chashma already has three nuclear power plants known as C-1, C-2 and C-3, which are contributing to the national grid along with a similar plant in Karachi.

Pakistan is also building two more nuclear power plants in Karachi known as K-2 and K-3 aimed to give a major boost to civil nuclear energy after completion.

Pakistan has been grappling with power shortage and the unusually long hours of power outages has been haunting its people for about a decade.

Cooperation in many areas

Mr. Abbasi thanked China for extending cooperation {more accurately in proliferation} in the nuclear field. Pakistan and China are actively cooperating in many other areas, including construction of roads, motorways, airports and upgradation of Pakistan Railways.

Many projects were initiated under the $50 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Pakistanis are breeding like rabbits
They won't do population control because they are too damn uneducated and ill-educated, and islamized
They can't even feed, bathe or dress their current population, but want a Fauj for difa against India !
They won't educate their children, because they don't want to spend on education - they want to spend on their Army officers aiyashi
They give money to their terrorist groups - both the ISI/Army and the Civilians in each province. Give them a free hand to generate funds on their own.
Now that deeper than himalaya and higher than oceans lizzard freind has joined the kafir, hindoos in passing a resolution against Pakistan's favourite jihadi terrorist groups, all retard fauji experts, bureaucrats and serving ministers have descended on their TV shows, trying to literally defend their terror loving ways. Every one is trying to earn Sawab!

These guys are just paying lip service to eliminating Jihadi culture, which has permeated every aspect of their society
Talking about education: Most of their kids don't have formal education, and go to Madarsas, where the first thing they probably learn is "Kill all the Kafirs"
The kids who are lucky enough to go to school, get exposed to an islamized - anti-science, curicullum, and then the wonderfool Pakistan Studies. Pakistan Studies was intended as a political indoctrination tool against Hindu India for the school kids, but is now duly islamized as well

Pakistan will continue to shock the world by dropping from one depth to another, from one crisis to another. The Pakistani Army and the Bloody Civ-lians are doing this to Pakistan and the awam with their eyes wide open

How come all these pious not making a beehive towards China through karakoram? Chini 12 trillion GDP.. UK 3 trillion GDP.

Pakis take risk to go all the way to English Channel & Germany.

On the other hand, it is so easy to jump on a truck and cross over to Xinjiang.

It is time Pakis migrate enmass to Chiniland.

Chini gave the crown jewels to Pakis, least they can give something back, which have quite a lot.

Well said by the Duke in the 60s! BTW, he was the Spanish Ambassador to Pakistan. While the Duchy originated in medieval Italy, the 20th-century title Duque de Amalfi was revived by Alfonso XIII of Spain.

Sunni Terrorist Fragments of Unstable Pakistan - June 20, 2017

Post by Peregrine »

House in Order

Foreign Minister Khwaja Asif has grabbed headlines with his statement that “we need to bring our house in order, to prevent facing embarrassment on the international level”. He went on to admit Pakistan’s “mistake” in participating as a “proxy” in America’s war in Afghanistan against the USSR in the 1980s. “We have baggage. We need to accept that history and correct ourselves.”

Khwaja Asif wants a “new foreign policy” to cope with a regional situation in which Pakistan faces isolation and censure. Following US President Donald Trump’s blunt criticism of Pakistan as “part of the problem” of Afghanistan, the recent Brics Summit has now, for the first time, listed Pakistan based non-state actors like the TTP, Haqqani Network, LeT, JM, etc, as terrorist groups. This means that key regional stakeholders China, Russia, America, India and Afghanistan have jointly put Pakistan on notice. Until now, China had gone the extra mile to protect Pakistan at international forums from being targeted as such.

Pakistan’s formal reaction to these twin developments has been two-fold. First, the civil-military leadership has united to reject the allegation that Pakistan is sponsoring terrorism and needs to do more to stop it from hurting neighbours India and Afghanistan. In defense, it is reiterating evidence of a huge loss of soldiers and civilians in fighting terrorism on its soil sponsored from across its eastern and western borders. Second, it has hastily-convened a Conference of Foreign Envoys to formulate an appropriate policy response arising out of recent regional developments. Khwaja Asif’s statement deliberately reflects the thinking of the core elements in the Foreign Policy establishment.

But the equanimity with which Khwaja Asif has articulated a public “mea-culpa” and the consequent need for a new foreign policy is striking. Not so long ago, much the same sentiment was echoed by a couple of civilians in a meeting of the National Security Council that provoked the ire of the military establishment whence it came to be named “Dawnleaks” and destabilized the administration of Nawaz Sharif. Now the same military establishment had nodded approval to the same civilian leadership to publicly announce a review of the same “national security” doctrine in order to assuage the concerns and fears of the international community.

Pakistan’s defense of its contribution to the war on terrorism is accepted on one count and rejected on another by the regional stakeholders, including China. The world acknowledges that Pakistan’s military has waged a relentless war against the TTP, IS and assorted religious extremist groups terrorizing the people and state of Pakistan from bases inside and outside Pakistan. But it rejects its assertion that groups based inside Pakistan such as the Haqqani Network, LeT, JM etc that are attacking both Afghanistan and India but not Pakistan have its implicit and explicit support. Therefore when Khwaja Asif demands a change of foreign and national security policy, it is obvious that he is referring to policy regarding the Haqqani network, Let, JM etc with whom Pakistan’s regional neighbours and the international community are concerned and not the TTP, IS etc. The “do more” international mantra is directed at the former and not the latter. The significant new development is that this is now acknowledged by the foreign policy community of Pakistan.

The problem, however, is how to “do more”. The Haqqani network, like the rest of the Afghan Taliban, was provided safe havens and nurtured originally for leveraging the Afghan civil war to Pakistan’s advantage. Now it is clear that far from being to Pakistan’s advantage it has become a liability for Pakistan. The problem is how to oust it from Pakistan without pushing it into the arms of the TTP inside Afghanistan or IS inside Pakistan and reinforcing terrorism inside Pakistan.

Much the same sort of problem bedevils action against LeT and JM. Both were nurtured to leverage an advantageous solution to the Indian occupation of Kashmir. Now even the Kashmiris are not prepared to accept help from such Pakistan-based jihadis because it means tarring their struggle for Azaadi from both India and Pakistan. The problem for Pakistan is how to disband them without pushing them into the arms of the TTP as happened when the Musharraf regime decided to merely close the tap on jihad in 2005.

Pakistan’s resolve to neutralise the LeT, JM and Haqqani network would doubtless be strengthened if Afghanistan were to commit itself to eliminating the TTP based in Afghanistan and end support to Indian proxies terrorizing Balochistan. Likewise, if India were to demonstrate a sincere readiness to resolve the Kashmir issue to the satisfaction of the Kashmiris at least, the need for Pakistan to retain jihadi leverage would vanish. But neither India nor Afghanistan are prepared to take such steps.

For these reasons, a mutually advantageous and trusting regional approach to terrorism is the need of the hour. India and Pakistan must normalize relations, First and Foremost Clapistan must put an end to its perpetration of Terrorism in India! Pakistan and Afghanistan must act against anti-each other’s terrorists. And the US, Russia and China must assist them all to resolve their mutual problems instead of ganging up against Pakistan.

USA Plays Down BRICS Declaration. Instead Asks Pakistan To "Change Its Approach To Terrorism"

Pakistan must change its approach to terrorism, says US
WASHINGTON: While encouraging members of the BRICS alliance to continue playing a constructive role in stabilising the world, the United States reminded Pakistan on Wednesday that it “must change its approach” to terrorism.
For the first time, BRICS termed militant groups allegedly based in Pakistan a regional security concern and called for their patrons to be held to account.“We encourage the BRICS Forum to contribute constructively to global governance and stability,” said a spokesperson for the US State Department when asked to comment on the BRICS statement. It is diplomatese for "refrain to criticize Massa"
The US official also welcomed BRICS’ condemnation of North Korea’s recent nuclear test and then reminded Pakistan of the need to fight all militant groups operating in the South Asian region, including those that Washington claims are based in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata). Indirect reference to the Haqqani Group
“As the (Trump) administration has said, Pakistan must change its approach. We look to the Pakistani government to take decisive action against militant groups based in Pakistan that are a threat to the region,” the State Department added.
The groups mentioned in the BRICS statement included the Afghan Taliban, militant Islamic State group, Al Qaeda and its affiliates, the Haqqani network, Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Hizbut Tahrir.

Isloo Jamaatis Stir Up "Rohingyas Boiling Pot"

Red Zone sealed as Islamabad braces for Rohingya rally
ISLAMABAD – Thousands of people Friday marched on Islamabad to protest the persecution of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, prompting the security forces to seal the most sensitive area of the federal capital, Red Zone.
Religious organisations, political parties, students and members of the civil society are holding a demonstration in the Aabpara area, demanding to march onto the diplomatic enclave and the removal of obstructions in their path. The "faithfools" must have been "fed" the weekly Friday potion of "Malsi in danger" in Burma and action needs to be taken ASAP
The main procession will be taken out by the Jamaat-e-Islami, whose chief Sirajul Haq is expected to lead the rally. The "top guns" of Malsi roped in for the occasion !
On Thursday, the senator gives 24 hours deadline to the government to expel the ambassador of Myanmar otherwise his party workers would storm “red zone” in Islamabad.“If the government does not expel Myanmar’s ambassador till Friday, our workers will cross the red zone,” a statement quoted Sirajul Haq as saying while addressing a function of women. Hope that the ambassadors of other Buddhist countries like Thailand, Sri- Lanka , Korea and Japan keep a low profile, lest they also become a target of these fanatics !
The capital’s administration blocked all entry routes into the Red Zone to avert any potential move by the rally’s participants to enter the Red Zone, which houses the Diplomatic Enclave as well.Police have blocked the rally’s participants to further advance. Negotiations are ongoing between the local administration and the protestors. Around 7,500 police personnel, including officials of Rangers and Frontier Constabulary, have been deputed in Red Zone.. Islamabad Traffic Police have issued a route plan to ensure that commuters of the twin cities are not disturbed as a result of the protest.Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal, in a statement, urged protesters to remain peaceful, saying the sanctity of the Red Zone should be respected.
“Pakistan’s standing in the world will be hurt in case of any incident of violence in the Red Zone,” said Iqbal, adding that it is Pakistan’s national duty to safeguard diplomatic missions. Pakistan's standing, IMO, has hit rock bottom !
On Thursday, the federal cabinet, which met in Islamabad with Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in the chair, passed a resolution condemning the persecution of Rohingya Muslims under the direct patronage of state institutions of Myanmar.
It also called upon the United Nations to take the lead in stopping immediately the cold blooded and callous genocide of Rohingya Muslims. :((

Has he checked with Naveed Mukhtar and Asif Bajwa?
Unless he has done so before opening his mouth, he is going to a) get a cold shoulder, b) a solid rebuke if he persists, and if he still persists c) a new foreign minister and a midnight knock on Khwaja's door

Senior US Journalist says HBL New York closure may be a part of American plan to “put the squeeze on Pakistan”
NEW YORK – The closure of one of the country’s biggest banks, Habib Bank Limited (HBL) might be a part of US’s plans to “put the squeeze on Pakistan,” said senior American journalist Michael Kugelman on Friday.
Writing on Twitter, Kugelman claimed that the closure of bank and fine, which is the largest ever imposed upon a Pakistani bank is perhaps an early indication of Washington’s latest policies aimed at pressurizing Pakistan to give up its alleged support and shelter to terrorists. Will the Paki State get the message is another thing !
“This is no small matter,” he added. The fine liable to be paid within 14 days. The fine is still far smaller than the $630 million that the regulator had earlier assessed.
The New York State Department of Financial Services said in a statement that the fine was being imposed for failures to comply with laws and regulations designed to combat illicit money transactions. The bank was also ordered to surrender its license to operate in the state, effectively removing it from the US financial system.
Last month, Trump had infuriated Pakistan when he accused Islamabad of providing terrorists safe haven and threatened to suspend aid.
A day later, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters that Washington would consider cutting aid to Pakistan, increasing the use of drone attacks within its territory and stripping the South Asian country of its status as a major non-NATO US ally.US General Nicholson said Afghan Taliban leaders were being given sanctuary in the Pakistani cities of Quetta and Peshawar. The newly minted FM of Pakiland is calling for "new ideas" from his dept to turn over a new leaf. The coming weeks and months will be crucial for Pakistan to see if POTUS is just blowing "hot air" or he means real business

Panic and fear as oil slick forms off Karachi beach
KARACHI – An oil slick over a four-kilometre stretch of the beach has spread panic and fear among beachgoers on Wednesday.
According to the experts, the oil slick does not pose any serious threat to humans, ( based on conjecture not scientific evidence !) however, it will affect the marine life.
According to Geo News, the source of the oil slick is not known. It is being claimed that the slick did not originate from the Karachi Port area and has likely made landfall after being pushed by Monsoon winds from the open sea.
While the oil spill from the Tasman Spirit was fresh, its smell ( the "famous" budbhu of Krachi  ) affected residents causing nausea, headaches and throat infections, forcing those living close to the beach to evacuate further inland; the current oil slick does not pose the same threats, according to media reports.
PS: Hope that due to lack of technical expertise, the Pakis do not take the easy way out and blame India for this environmental hazard

Either of the below is possible:
1. Oil smuggling from Iran or India - the boat sank
2. Pak Behriya's ship or sub sank
3. Some oil tanker washed its tanks with sea water - these guys do that after unloading their cargo, go out into the sea and clean their tanks, screwing up the sea. Its illegal in every country except failed states, where there is no real law that is implemented

Pakistan army chief advocates dialogue on Kashmir issue - ToI
Pakistan army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa has called for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute through political and diplomatic means, a stance divergent from the approach the country's army has employed so far. {Not true. Ayub offered a 'Joint Defence' agreement with us in 1959 which Nehru contemptuously and correctly rejected as 'Joint defence against whom?'. Then, Musharraf was hailed as the last dove from Pakistan for having offered to settle 'the Kashmir dispute through political and diplomatic means'. All such Pakistani offers are duplicitous especially when they come from their Generals}

Bajwa's statement at his annual 'defence day' speech this week comes two days after Pakistan foreign minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif admitted for the first time that internationally proscribed terrorist organisations such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammad were operating from within the country.

Emphasising that peace is essential for prosperity, Bajwa added, "The welfare of millions of people of these two countries is linked with permanent peace. Instead of insulting Pakistan and using force against Kashmiris, it is in India's favour to seek resolution of the dispute through diplomatic and political means."

Without naming India but referring to it as a "neighbouring country", Bajwa said, "We did not bring nuclear weapons to South Asia. And even now these weapons are simply a guarantee of peace in answer to a neighbouring country which is high on power. It is this country which has brought unconventional war to the South Asian region."

The General said, "We have paid the price for the wars started by super powers, in the form of terrorism, extremism and economic loss. We are abiding by our policy that we will not allow our soil to be used against any country, and expect the same of other countries." The Pakistan military leadership's change of approach gains significance in light of a consolidated global fight against terrorism. Pakistan has recently come under fire from all quarters, including the US, for harbouring terrorists. {Nah, this is purely tactical to stave off cascading problems and avoid certain looming issues such as FATF etc.}

Trump's speech and BRICS declaration has clearly rattled them and this is the time to hit them and not chai biskoot. I hope Modi Govt doesn't fall for their trick. Their immediate reaction to Trump speech was to "reject" it showing their usual false bravado but recent action on Habib bank has made them realize Trump was not bluffing.

OMG, is it even possible?

Pakistan seeks changes in free trade agreement with China - DAWN
Pakistan will try to convince Chinese authorities to revise the existing free trade agreement (FTA) on the less-than-equal reciprocity principle, Commerce Minister Pervaiz Malik told Dawn on Friday.

The move is aimed at overcoming the trade imbalance that exists between the two countries.

“We will demand {What !@#} an early-harvest programme in the existing FTA that will cover 100 items of Pakistan’s export interest,” Mr Malik said.

Negotiation teams briefed the minister about the trade agreements with China and Thailand. The briefing was part of the preparation ahead of the eighth round of negotiation on the second phase of the FTA to be held in Beijing on Sept 14-15.

Mr Malik said China signed several bilateral and regional FTAs, which limited the benefit of preferences to Pakistan. China’s FTA with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries has also made the preferential treaty for Pakistan mostly irrelevant. For example, China charges 3.5 per cent duty on the import of yarn from Pakistan under the FTA while it also charges the same duty on imports from India without any treaty.

This shows the FTA has become mostly irrelevant for Pakistan. The minister said his ministry has worked out various proposals that will be presented during the upcoming round of negotiations.

The minister said Pakistan will urge China to enter into the early-harvest programme. “We also raised this issue with Pakistan’s foreign minister before his visit to China,” he said, adding that the ministry also sought help from the Foreign Office to make the treaty beneficial.

But another official told Dawn that Pakistan may not sign the second phase of the FTA as it fears that the move will further increase imports from China. Authorities in Beijing are unwilling to accept Islamabad’s demand for the revival of the preferential treatment for exportable products under the FTA, the official added.

As per the original plan, the second phase was supposed to be implemented from Jan 1, 2014. Both countries started negotiations for the second phase in 2011. The FTA covers more than 7,000 tariff lines at eight-digit tariff code under the Harmonised System (HS). Both sides have held seven rounds of negotiation on the second phase to break the deadlock.

An official statement issued after the meeting said the commerce minister showed satisfaction over the progress of the FTA negotiations. He directed the negotiating team to work vigorously to conclude the agreement in the best interest of Pakistan.

Currently, Pakistan has reduced the duty on 35pc products to zero per cent while China has reciprocated by reducing the duty on 40pc products of Pakistan’s exports to zero per cent. The official said Islamabad was also reviewing the services agreement with the Chinese authorities.

A commerce ministry report revealed that Pakistan could not utilise the concessions granted by China under the first phase.
It only exported in 253 tariff lines, where the average export value was $500 or more, which was around 3.3pc of the total tariff lines (7,550) on which China granted concessions to Pakistan.

Pakistan’s key exports to China were raw material and intermediate products, such as cotton yarn, woven fabric, grey fabric etc. Value-added products were missing despite the fact that some of these products, like garments, were included in the concessionary regime.

Pakistan elites are used to demanding from US. Pakistan elites also tend to think of themselves as TFTA and model their behavior like Americans. They will get slapped around if they try it with Chinese who seem to be getting tired of the relentless baksheesh demanded of them.

Pakistan gets $230m loans to cushion forex reserves

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has received two short-term loans worth $230 million from international creditors, meant to keep the official foreign exchange reserves at a level sufficient to provide cover to three-month import bill.

According to officials, the country received an amount of $153 million from Citibank in August. Besides, Islamic Development Bank (IDB) gave a $77 million short-term loan in July for crude oil import.

The IDB’s short-term facility is meant for import of crude oil from Saudi Arabia and the lender directly makes payments to the oil supplier on behalf of an oil importer. It partially helped lower pressure on the country’s forex reserves.

From April to May this year, Pakistan had signed three separate short-term loan agreements with the IDB valuing $700 million. Of this amount, Pakistan has already imported crude oil equivalent to $340 million.

For the current fiscal year, the government has estimated receiving $1.55 billion short-term loan from the IDB against the oil import facility.

Pakistan may soon be ineligible for World Bank loans

Sources in the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said higher than anticipated foreign remittances in August also helped keep the official foreign currency reserves above the three-month import cover level.

They said that in August, Pakistan received around $2 billion in foreign remittances, partly because of the seasonal effect of Eidul Azha.

The SBP is expected to officially announce the foreign remittances statistics next week.

During the week ending August 31, 2017, the SBP’s reserves increased by $338 million to $14.681 billion due to official inflows, the central bank had reported on Thursday.

For almost one month, Pakistan was touching the three-month import cover border line as its reserves remained at around $14.3 billion.

In order to avoid downgrading in its credit ratings and keep the tap of budget financing open from the World Bank, Pakistan has to maintain its official foreign currency reserves above the three-month import cover level.

The finance ministry is currently making arrangements for floating about $1 billion worth of Sukuk Bonds by middle of November and a better credit rating will help lower the cost of borrowing. It had also raised $1 billion last year at 5.5% interest rate – the lowest rate on the Islamic bond that it ever paid.

The government was reviewing different options to keep the reserves above the level of three-month import bill. The options included incentives for expatriates to invest in Pakistani dollar-denominated bonds, more restrictions on imports and steps that will encourage exporters to bring back export proceeds.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar on Friday held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Xiao Jie and discussed issues of mutual interests – including ways and means to further enhance bilateral economic relations.

During FY2016-17, Pakistan had borrowed a record $10.1 billion external loans that included a record-breaking $4.4 billion short-term financing.

Out of this, $2.3 billion came from Chinese financial institutions. The government took $1.7 billion from the China Development Bank, $300 million from the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and $300 million from the Bank of China.

It also obtained $445 million from the Noor Bank of the UAE, $650 million from a consortium of the Suisse Bank, the UBL and the ABL, $275 million from Citi and $700 million from the Standard Chartered Bank, London.

This was the first time in Pakistan’s history that any government has taken over $10 billion as fresh foreign loans in a single year.

Pakistan Tahreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan on Thursday called Finance Minister Ishaq Dar Pakistan’s economic hitman while criticising his economic policies.

In July, Pakistan obtained a total of $254.9 million loans, including $77 million from IDB. It received $75 million from the World Bank for project financing.

China also gave $71.5 million worth of loans for carrying out various Beijing-funded schemes. The Asian Development Bank provided $28.8 million worth of loans.

The $254.9 million loans were 3.2% of the total annual budgetary estimates of $8 billion for FY2017-18.

Sunni Terrorist Fragments of Unstable Pakistan - June 20, 2017

Where to, now? - M Ziauddin

Keeping in view the current situation in the world and the region, Pakistan will have to swiftly “change its direction,” said Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif on Thursday, September 7th, after the conclusion of the Pakistani envoys’ conference.

But do we have the time to change course before the onrushing train of world public opinion crashes into Pakistan?

On the face of it, however, it seems only an impossible Houdini act can snatch us from the jaws of the oncoming challenges. Indeed, we have missed this bus so many times that it has now stopped coming our way.

Still, there are a number of steps that we could quickly take to convey to the world that this time at least we mean what we are saying, so that those who are driving the onrushing train take their foot off the throttle for a minute or two as they take a closer look at what we are offering.

The first step that needs to be taken urgently is to remove foreign policy from national pride and link it up with national interest even if it appears on the face of it to be a move for appeasement, especially towards our enemy number one — India. The next step is to immediately proceed against all those who were allegedly involved in the Mumbai massacre of November 2008.

Those who have worked on this case believe that we have enough evidence to get a guilty verdict from the courts against its alleged perpetrators.

Next, we must stop testing China’s friendship by having Beijing block a proposal by the US to designate Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar a global terrorist.

Pakistan had the choice to go after the non-state actors (NSAs) immediately or dismantle their infrastructure gradually. The first option was considered too dangerous as the militants, it was feared, would morph into many groups once their leadership was arrested and jailed, making it impossible to monitor the splinters. So, the second option was adopted. This was based on the theory that if one tried to jump from the top of the ladder, there was this possibility of ending up with broken limbs. It was therefore decided that we would climb down the ladder one step at a time.

The gradualism theory seems to have done us no good. We seem to have lost a lot of limbs already. We have lost as many as 53,000 Pakistanis, including 7,000 security personnel and suffered a massive dent of $120 billion to the economy.

More importantly, we have lost a lot of ideological space to the distorted version of Islam propagated at gunpoint by these NSAs. This ideology has spread like wildfire from Fata to Punjab and Karachi, to rural Sindh and Balochistan.

As a result, Pakistan has become a pariah state, almost. No country wants to play cricket here and our tourism has taken a big hit. Even our most secure establishments, like the GHQ and the naval and air force installations have come under attack.

We consistently deny the presence of safe havens for the Haqqani Network in the tribal belt, or the existence of the so-called Quetta Shura or/and Peshawar Shura. But let us make doubly sure that this is what the actual truth is.

We took a long time going into North Waziristan despite the heavy price the nation kept paying all these years in terms of men, money and the all- important ideological space.

There were said to be about 3,500 foreigners in North Waziristan, about a few scores of Arabs, a thousand or so children of Arabs from Pashtun mothers, some tourist jihadists, and a sprinkling of Uzbeks, Tajiks, Chechens and Uighurs.

It used to be argued that if we tried to send boots into the region, the jihadists would use the civilian population as human shields resulting in colossal collateral damage. If we bombed them from the skies, the collateral damage would be equally enormous. Using gunship helicopters would be disastrous because the terrorists would shoot them down.

The inordinate delay in launching this war for peace has also injected a large dose of trust deficit between Islamabad and Washington, and two of our immediate neighbours — India and Afghanistan — continue to suspect our intentions and accuse us of playing a double game.

A Pakistani journalist's recent experience visiting Afghanistan
I said I was Pakistani. They said I should remove my shoes. My luggage was carefully scrutinised. And there was a very, very long list of questions. This was repeated at all subsequent security checks.

And this was just the start.
I stayed in Afghanistan for eight days. My time there consisted mostly of short interviews, off record and on record interactions, and some rather alarming exchanges with sources who requested anonymity, of course.

Each call that I made to coordinate my scheduled interviews carried an often hostile undertone.

‘…I am a Pakistani journalist.

No, I am not an ISI agent.

I am in Afghanistan for work.

I am a journalist…’

A specific hatred

The current mood in Kabul is quite anti-Pakistan, or to be more precise, anti-ISI. Most Afghans do not hate Pakistan per se, but the ISI, they staunchly believe, supports the Afghan Taliban and has vested interests in destabilising their country. While the ISI was berated by many, whenever I asked for specifics, I only got half-stories, hearsay and no evidence.

The National Directorate of Security (NDS) and the government of Afghanistan blame Pakistan for almost every security dilemma.

Indian intelligence, on the other hand, has close relations with Afghan intelligence. I learn that being on good terms with the Indian embassy in Kabul can really help you gain the trust of the Afghan interior ministry.

On the condition of anonymity, a senior politician (a jihadi in the past) told me that the national unity government in Afghanistan did not understand the importance of 'good relations' with the ISI. He stressed that Afghanistan needed to prioritise its relations in the region, which just wasn't happening.

In his view, Pakistan was not handling the matter of talks very well either. What they are doing under the table must be stopped, he said cryptically, before adding that the NDS and the government did not trust him and that he openly admitted to being pro-Pakistan.

This politician told me about his private meetings with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. He said, “Ghani panics a lot,” and that the president could not bear pressure. He further said that the MOU between Afghan and Pakistani intelligence was not impacting the trust deficit between the ISI and the NDS. For him, the solution lay in the policies and decision-making power of the Afghan government; the frequent change in diplomatic and political inclinations was damaging to foreign policy.

The Afghan journalist

I met a few Afghan journalists who wanted to work in Islamabad, but security clearance procedures were proving too troublesome.

Afghan TV channels do not have any bureaus in Islamabad, and proposals for their establishment are lying in the dust. Officials from the Afghan foreign ministry told me that they had thrice requested Pakistan’s Minister for Information, Pervaiz Rasheed that they wanted to work with Pakistan's state TV on positive image-building (an effort which could be extended to private channels), but they have yet to receive a response.

The journalist community in Kabul is of the view that the two countries should build better relations with each other. In their view, miscreants in Afghanistan, Pakistan and India are actively working to prevent this.

I was told that whenever journalists from Pakistan come to work here, they are harassed by the NDS. I believe Afghan journalists must face the same problem in Pakistan.

Security and military reasons aside, I discovered another dimension of Afghanistan's tilt towards India when I learned that over 150 Indian journalists are currently working in Afghanistan. You will hardly find any Pakistani journalists working on important stories.

With this kind of people-to-people contact, no wonder Afghans trust Indians. For my own security, I was suggested not to reveal my nationality while interacting with the local public
, though I did not follow that advice.

The Afghan social worker

I also met Afghan women social activists, who wanted bold decisions from their government. They did not believe in enforced brotherhoods and wanted a globalised, progressive and modern Afghanistan. They did however think that a pro-Pakistan attitude was never useful to them and that Pakistan had actually used them.

Fatana Gilani is a famous social activist who has been working for women empowerment for 30 years. She runs more than 50 vocational institutes for women; empowering Afghan women through education.

She said, "I love the women of Pakistan. We share the same culture. We live so close. But what about the role of the Pakistani government? Why does Pakistan support Taliban? Who created the Taliban? My efforts for women will not stop, but at the same time, I cannot ignore the factors which hinder our progress. Pakistan should not support the Taliban."

I even got access to the Afghan Taliban, though it wasn't easy, as they avoid talking to women. The aged man spoke of the Islamic State, the threat it posed, and how Pakistan may resultantly lose its influence on strategic policy in the region.

When I spoke to Afghan government officials, they avoided the camera, and the reason was straightforward: “It won't be right to give an interview to a Pakistani journalist right now.”
I got diplomatic (empty) answers to most of my questions.

For the Afghan government, a porous border is not the bone of contention; it is the alleged sanctuaries of Afghan Taliban in Pakistan which are unacceptable. My observation is that they have no solution for border management, and it’s not even a major issue for them.

Dr Rangin Dadfar Spanta, former foreign minister and national security adviser to former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, shared the same sentiments.

“Pakistan is interfering in the internal matters of Afghanistan,” he said, citing a serious concern regarding Afghan Taliban crossing over from Pakistan. The ex-foreign minister further said that he was aware of the operation being carried out by the armed forces of Pakistan, but he believed it was not against the terrorists who attack them.

I asked him if Pakistan was indeed stabbing Afghanistan in the back, how would he explain the millions of Afghan refugees living in Pakistan? To this, he responded with surprising gratitude, thanking the Pakistani nation and the government for keeping and facilitating the refugees.

Meanwhile, responding to Afghan allegations like the above, Pakistani ambassador in Kabul Ibrar Hussain was of the view that Pakistan cannot open so many fronts at the same time, as the country is already busy fighting the internal threat of terrorism in Pakistan. {A standard Pakistani subterfuge. We have to climb down slowly, we have a consensus to dismantle all terrorists, we have been the worst terrorized nation etc. etc. even as it eggs on China to defend Masood Azhar, refuses to prosecute terrorists, continues to give refuge to Indian terrorists, continues to send jihadis across the border, openly supports and funds Kashmiri terrorists, continues to flout international sanctions against terrorists etc}

Pakistan is committed for peace and prosperity in Afghanistan, he said, which is why various landmark projects funded by the Pakistan government, like a hospital (US$60 million) and a boys hostel/school (US$ 10 million), are underway.

Pakistan and Afghanistan are losing valuable time and energy in their altercations against each other. Ufortunately, all this is happening at a policy-making level, and the effect is trickling down to innocent citizens, which in turn fuels widespread suspicion and hatred.

To sum up my sojourn, I would say that the ties between Pakistan and Afghanistan are complex, but can be overcome with rationale rather than emotional responses based on the past. Those in Kabul, and those in Islamabad need to step outside of the bubbles they have decided to live in.
A Pakistani journalist's recent experience visiting Afghanistan

SS-Ji:
Thanks for posting this very interesting article by ( Paki Ayesha) Batool Rajput, originally published in DAWN on October 7, 2015. I would opine that things between Afghanistan and Pakistan have gotten even worse since. The war of words reference Pakistan's attempt to fence the Durand Line which no Afghan Govt ( even the Taliban) was ever recognized. The 2016 US droning of Taliban Leader Mullah Mansour in Paki Balochistan, the POTUS warning to Pakistan, which was "welcomed" in Afghanistan are some of the other factors contributing to the hostile atmosphere. If a female was treated roughly , one may well imagine the fate of a Paki male journo !
As I have said before , Pakis have to wake up and not treat Afghanistan as their so-called strategic backyard . ( which I do not think that they are mentally prepared to do !)
I am suspecting the interviewed "senior politician ( jihadi in the past " ) is a reference to Gulbuddin Hekmetyar ( ..." openly admitted to being pro- Pakistan" ) . Most likely is still an ISI asset IMO.
To conclude, Pakistan will only be satisfied with an Anti- India Govt installed in Kabul. This is impossible in the Afghanistan of the 21st century !

Red Zone sealed as Islamabad braces for Rohingya rally
These are crocodile tears. This pro-rohingya rally was organized by the fascist Jamaat-e-Islami whose goal is to create an islamic state in the Indian subcontinent. Two wrongs do not make a right. Has the world forgotten this group's active role in the genocide of Bengalis (many of them muslims) in E. pakistan during the civil war?

This below article came out in 2012:

Pakistan's extremists whip up frenzy over Burma's Muslims
But on the streets of Pakistan, the rhetoric runs much hotter with protesters claiming "thousands" of Rohingyas are being slaughtered in western Myanmar (also known as Burma). Online, meanwhile, a series of doctored and misidentified photographs are circulating widely in Pakistani social media and beyond that purport to show violence against Rohingyas.
Investigations by social media watchdogs, and the respected Pakistani newspaper Express Tribune, have proven that most of these claims are exaggerated or entirely false.
For example, one photo posted on a Facebook page originating from Pakistan show Buddhists dressed in their traditional red robes standing in the middle of two rows of dead bodies. The caption reads: "Bodies of Muslims killed by Buddhists." In reality, this picture is from an earthquake incident in China in 2010, where Tibetan monks came to help with the rescue efforts.

Retired Senator Cautions Pakistani Establishment To Get Serious About "Tackling Terrorism" And Making Policy Changes Or Face Growing Isolation .

Change Or Isolation?
Emphasizing the need to respond to international concerns about the presence of extremist and terrorist structures in Pakistan, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif sounded quite realistic when he favoured the path of engagement with friends and world powers instead of going for confrontation.
In a press talk after attending envoy’s conference in Islamabad on Wednesday, he felt we needed to ‘put our house in order’ to change the international perception about Pakistan.
This response to Xiamen Declaration of BRICS summit held in China and issued on September 4 is quite different from the way Pakistan had reacted to the speech of US President Donald Trump on August 22 in which he enunciated a new strategy for Afghanistan, Pakistan and South Asia.On that occasion Pakistani Foreign Minister had not only postponed his scheduled US visit but the Pakistan visit by a US official from the State Department was also delayed on the desire of the Pakistani side. IMO, the BRICS Declaration On Terrorism shocked the Paki Establishment !/quote]According to a changed schedule, Khwaja Asif was to visit more friendly countries like China, Russia and Turkey to garner support against US pressure. The pressure, this time appears to be real. Not just empty words but followed up by concrete measures, like the recent punitive action against the Pakistani Bank based in NYC.
The so called Defence of Pakistan Council – an umbrella organization of jihadist networks led by Moulana Sami-ul-Haq, the self-proclaimed father of Taliban - took it upon itself to announce in a press conference in Islamabad that Pakistan Army will not act against the Haqqani network and that Pakistani jihadists will also keep fighting against US in Afghanistan. There was no denial or contradiction of Sami-ul-Haq’s statement from official sources. After the "TTP defection" from the "Jihadi Umbrella ", the last thing the Deep State wants is another non state actor, ( like Haq ) striking it out on its own, and the terrible consequences for the Paki Awaam
But after the BRICS Summit declaration at least the Pakistani Foreign Office seems to have realized gravity of the situation in terms of the ever deepening international isolation of the country. To be fair, the foreign office not only knew this grim reality already but also had the courage to bluntly report it to a high level security meeting in September 2016. Chinese frustration with a soft Pakistani attitude towards extremist militancy was the most important specific highlight of the aforementioned report.Unfortunately, due to imbalanced civil-military relations the controversy over publishing of the report’s contents the next day in a leading English daily overshadowed the debate about national security and foreign policy. The Chinese may "use" Pakistan as a "strategic force" against India, but basically they will look out for their own interest first and now their own citizens are now becoming targets in Islamic Pakistan, which does not bode well for their long term plans for the world !
For Foreign Office professionals it’s not difficult to understand the changing dynamics of international relations particularly the monumental changes taking place in our region. But the problem is that unlike the distant past they don’t have much role in shaping the foreign policy now as foreign policy, along with national security policy, is totally dominated by the security establishment. The main job of our diplomats now is to justify and explain policies that are not shaped by foreign policy experts. The Paki FO is obviously being "used" by the Security Establishment.
quote]
Many people in Pakistan haven’t comprehended the width and depth of Chinese vision of One Belt and One Road. For them it’s just another name of CPEC. They don’t realize that CPEC is just one project in a grand strategy envisioned by Chinese leaders for the region and for the world.Starting from regional connectivity, trade and economic cooperation it aims in the long term to create a new world order.China has come to give ownership to globalization at a critical stage of history when some western countries including US are turning against it and are adopting protectionist policies. In the last few years China has boldly gone for translating its soft image into solid political and strategic influence. For example China is not content with looking at Afghanistan or India from Pakistan’s point of view anymore.China has already made significant investments in Afghanistan and has more ambitious plans for the future.
Rather looking for their own long term self interest, the Pakis are always willing to "sleep with anyone" if the sleeping partner can "help" them against India in any way . IMO, such is the case here !
Similarly, despite disputes on borders with India, China is determined to maintain and develop economic relations with India. But the most important thing to keep in mind is that the jihadist project based in Pakistan and manifested in various extremist and terrorist networks in the country and in the region is the most serious hurdle on the path of implementation of One Belt and One Road vision. How can China remain indifferent to the problem of extremism and terrorism in Pakistan in this situation? After getting frustrated with its quite diplomacy of long years to persuade Pakistan to change course, China went public along with other members of BRICS on the issue.
The case of Russia isn’t very dissimilar. It goes without saying that Russia is opposed to US military presence in Afghanistan for an indefinite period in the future, although it had cooperated with the US in its military action against Al Qaida and Taliban in the aftermath of September 11.But its most recent anxieties have been about the presence of the so called IS in the region. It is understandable because Central Asia and South Russia with big Muslim populations remains the soft underbelly of Russia; even more so after the collapse of Soviet Union. But it doesn’t imply that Russia will come around to support the jihadist project as some remnants of the Cold War mind-set in Pakistan were expecting. One has to just look at the Middle East to understand Russian priorities.
Be that as it may one has to see as to whether Pakistan turns this challenge into opportunity for getting rid of extremism and terrorism to reap the dividends of peace and prosperity or decides to stubbornly follow a bankrupt policy which stands exposed both nationally and internationally. By now it’s quite clear that even the closest friends aren’t ready to support this flawed policy. Pakistan has to make a choice and make it quite soon. There is no doubt that Pakistan has been "courting" the Russians to counter the cooling off- and the increasing pressure - with Massa. Pakistan is still looking for a "permanent friend" in its "fight" against India . First USA, and now the "dissappointment" with China !
