It will happen only if they open society , Saudi is a closed society for all intent and purpose even small things like Women allowed to drive is protrayed by MSM as the next best thing after slice bread. What ever demonstration happening in the Shia Oil Rich region is brutally cracked down and hardly covered by any MSM media world over.

The only partly democratic region in Gulf is Iran and due to this it faces such protest event which is widely covered by MSM.

Where is the counter from Islamists in Iran? One would expect islamists would come out in greater number and take on the protestors. Islam survivies only because of the force they are willing to bring on their opponents. In this case, how much force and violence are the islamists and the govt willing to bring on. If they are not, does that mean there are not many fundamental muslims in Iran? Did Iran turn a leaf for the good?

RSS should prepare and be ready with foot soldiers on the ground to target shias for gharwapsi in India before sunnis and christians pounce on them.

The Iranian protests are very suspicious.Just like the Egyptian Cairo protests that escalated and brought down Mubarak, plus the orchestrated protests in Kiev, where western Intel agents Euro MP2s and fascist UKR forces combined to overthrow the regime which was pro- Russia.

Iran has officially been named as being on Trump's hit list, where the Israeli's too are trying to prevent at any cost Iran ending up as another NoKo. A military attempt would ignite another wider ME conflict also involving Russia a staunch ally of Iran today, which was of immense mil help in the Syrian War.Therefore the route to regime change is through internal disturbances.Iran for decades has been under intense anti-regime activity from western Intel agencies which has only increased its paranoia.

Unfortunately, US pressure on India is affecting Indo-Iranian relations, critical to us to encircle Pak and through ChahBahar Port establish its own overland road and rail trade route to Afghanistan,Central Asia and Russia. Our declining oil purchases is seeing the Iranians cancelling oil exploration tights. India cannot afford to lose its influence with Iran.We must resist totally any US pressure against our interests and resume oil purchases, much closer than buying from the US or elsewhere. In concrete terms the US apart from hot air, has done bugg*r all against Pak's malevolent terrorist pro-active global activities.

India must swiftly re-establish its relations with Iran at the highest level and smoothen out any glitches affecting closer ties.

IMO, we need to worry about internal long term security, stability than any external threats first. Some guru can show further light what will benefit India internally with regards to Iran such as their doing a mass gharwapsi.

IMO it would be wrong to call the current protests 'Anti-Islamic'. It reportedly started due to economic reasons, with continued low oil prices, crushing US sanctions and expensive foreign interventions the chickens might be coming home to roost. Once you have Venezuela type inflation, unemployment. run on the banks etc only the very hardcore will come out in support of the incumbent government - the silent majority may yet be Islamic conservative but they may not step up to defend the Mullahs when they have more immediate roti-kapda-makan issues. And of course various people (and outside vested interests) are hitching their wagon - corruption, human rights, women's rights etc. Even if the protests succeed (what ever that means) Iran is not going to turn into a 400% sekoolar, liberal, recognize gay marriage and 58 genders apart from mail and female etc overnight. I would take all this talk about the rise of Zoroastrianism and such with a pinch of salt (may be they increase from 0.001% of the population to 0.01%). And anyways most of the news is tightly controlled by western MSM/Social Media which are pawns of the US intelligence - so they can overplay/underplay any side they choose.
Also I think the regime is not really using a heavy hand - with only a handful reportedly killed till now - may be they are letting the people vent for a while and waiting till it fizzles out. They would have certainly learnt from Syria and Libya to not exasperate the situation triggering a full scale civil war possibly lasting many years turning the whole country into a pile of rubble (the most desired outcome for US, Israel and Saudis).

Iran is backbone of Shia miltia such as Hezbollah and many rag tag shia militias fighting all over ME against Sunni radicals such as IS.
In Iraq they fought along side Shia led govt with parliament legitimacy.
If Iran becomes a non Islamic country there will no more be funding for Hezbollah/Houthi et al as a result they getting crushed by Sunni radicals, whatever be their new name.
Also lets get reminded one of demands of Iran protest is my life for my iran (meaning stop funding fight in Yemen, Iraq, Jordan etc).

Still doesn't explain why it will weaken Iran? You just mentioned about it's support to other Shia groups in the ME.

on the other hand, a destabilized iran from which the eastern section is carved out unstable that can be used to
1. bypass pakistan for NATO supplies to Afghanistan
2. counter to CPEC (on which US may not be fully onboard), without disrupting CPEC and coming to direct blows with china
Looking forward to rudradev's analysis

Philip Regardless Iran, Turkey, and KSA are the three legs of political Islam. If Iran leaves Shia, then it's back to Sunni Islam of yore.
And a non Muslim.Iran can take on the other two legs without Shia baggage.

The protests have been simmering for quite sometime built on defeat in Saddam Iraq war.

With Iran gaining in importance in world media due to the protests-- a few things about Iran-
seasoned watchers many know it-

Iran population ~80 million tribe wise-60%persians, 10% kurds azeris 16% and lurs 6%
2nd largest country in ME
conversion to islam in 7th centuryt AD wikipedia
natural resources- worlds largest known gas supply and 4th largest knwon oil reserves

Arabisation never succeeded in Iran.

Greater Iran can be of importance if regime change occurs in iran

Ismail 1 founder of safavid empire ~1500s forcibly converted the muslims to shite sect. Hence Iraninans and Azerbaijans are the world 1 and 2 nd shite nations.

Interestingly Iran constitution recognizes Jews Christians and zorastrianism as 3 official minority religions- despite Israel threats by the Islamic regime.

last major protests resulting in regime occurred in 1979 when Ruhollah Khomeini (fire brand Islamic radical)backed by western powers dethroned Mohammad shah Pahlavi. This was the beginning of the current Islamic regime. From a western puppet it became a western enemy. Ironically Khoemeini was popularly backed by western powers. Ironically usa protected Mohammad shah who escaped the revolution . Due ot its refusal to hand over Shah, Islamic regime captured US embassy-- resulted in jimmy carter downfall to Reagan as US president.

There is NO proof that protesters are heading towards Supreme leader's resident. There is No proof that regime officials are fledding. This tweet is best example of intel agencies at work.

2 Jan, 2018 marks six days of protests in Iran.
Notable features are:
Protests started in the periphery and not the capital Tehran.
Now they have reached Tehran.

Usually revolutions start from capital and spread to countryside while revolts start inversely. So lets see what happens.

Protests were due to economic reasons: high unemployment and high inflation.
Now they have turned political and religious and threaten regime stability.

Carroll Quigley "Evolution of Civilizations" gives a good template to study the outcomes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carroll_Quigley

You can read the book in pdf form in the Books section.

Iranian authorities control situation in Tehran, other cities – military official
The police and internal security forces “fully control the situation in Tehran and other cities of Iran where street protests took place,” the Al Mayadeen TV channel quotes Ramezan Sharif, a spokesman for the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), as saying.

According to Sharif, “the law enforcement agencies are coping with their duties well.” “There is no need for assistance from the IRGC and interference in the developments,” the general said.

The Al Mayadeen TV network earlier reported that special units to suppress riots occupied Tehran’s Azadi, Enghelab and Ferdowsi Squares on Monday. According to the TV channel, a group of about 100 protesters appeared in the center of the city in the evening on Monday, which was dispersed by law enforcement officers. The police were able to detain one of the instigators of the street protests.

Ear to the ground from the neighborhood. Things are a little serious. People have started taking money out of the bank and investing in RE and gold. There's trepidation that a regime change or instability may result in a run on banks.

No regime change in Iran yet folks. Back to regular programming.

But it will come. And the Iranians will do it on their own. No critical mass yet, it appears to me. The resentment is gathering a lot of steam though it will hold for some more time.

China, Iran/Persia has been the happy hunting ground for the west, Brits in particular for over a century. The Yanquis let the despotic Shah down when he fled, refusing to take him in, and the regims change that brought him in was engineered by the UK/US.Khomeini's revolution was assailed by Saddam, supplied with massive western armament, including chem-weapon tech by the global experts...Germany! But Iran proved to difficult to defeat and the war needed in stalemate.Saddam refused to obey the Yanquis, was building Bull's supergun, threateningly Israel was the last straw and he paid the price. His Kuwaiti gambit, tacitly approved by the then US ambassador was condemned by the West and used to put him in his place through GW-1.GW-2 was meant to grab hold of Iraq's oil wealth for the western latter-day pirates, but failed miserably and you now see the Shiites and Iran top dog in Iraq!

Iran has brilliantly carved out its own regional and global importance despite decades of western sanctions, by assiduously building up its military/RG, and assisting its ME allies like Syria to survive despite the most intense attempts of the west to bring about regime change in Syria. If Russia has indeed warned off the US/West from meddling in Iranian affairs then this latest round of protests, highly suspicious to me, will be crushed.

Britain has over the last few centuries had one of the finest foreign policy establishments in Europe for centuries, which with their Intel agencies combined ensured that its global interests were secure. In the GW-2, in the Basra area, British agents dressed in mufti were caught with explosives, rescued after a frantic effort to prevent the fact that they were involved in alleged IED/bombings to stir the pot.

With its rapidly diminishing status, Britain and its depleted military will have to depend more upon its Intel agencies to save its interests though snooping are agent-provocateur methods.

As predicted, the protests have fizzled out after the RGs swung into action. While there is genuine worry about the eco situ, jobs ,etc. amongst the youth, there is no repression like those during the days of the Shah with his savage SAVAK security entity brutalising the population.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard: People, Security Forces 'Have Broken the Chain' of Unrest
January 07, 2018 6:26 AM
VOA News
Iranian worshippers chant slogans during a rally against anti-government protestors after the Friday prayer ceremony in Tehran, Jan. 5, 2018. t

Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) said in a statement Sunday that the Iranian people and the country's security forces played a role in ending the recent wave of unrest that the IRGC says was fomented by foreign enemies.

The group said in a statement, "The new epic of the proud, conscious, pious, and revolutionary Iranian people, along with the distinguished presence of tens of thousands of loyal Basij volunteer forces in calming the riots and the sincere endeavors of the brethren of the Law Enforcement Force and the Intelligence Ministry have broken the chain woven by America, Britain, the Zionist regime [Israel], the Saudi royal family, the Hypocrites [the banned Mojahedin-e-Karl Organization] and monarchists and eliminated the witchery of a new sedition."

Iran's parliament holds a special session Sunday to discuss the anti-government protests that began December 28 and continued into the following week.

In this photo taken by an individual not employed by the Associated Press and obtained by the AP outside of Iran, people are affected by tear gas fired by anti-riot police to disperse demonstrators in a protest over the country's weak economy, in Tehran, Iran, Dec. 30, 2017.
Iran's ISNA news agency reported that Iran's interior minister, head of intelligence and security council chief are all expected to attend. On the agenda are discussions of the root cause of the protests, as well as legal help for protesters jailed during the demonstrations.

The session was called by a group of reformist lawmakers, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. In a letter, those lawmakers called for legal assistance for the detained and condemned any outside "interference" in the protests, calling out the United States in particular.

U.S. President Donald Trump is set to soon decide whether to continue waiving sanctions on Iran that were suspended under the 2015 international deal on Iran's nuclear program. The waiver must be renewed every 120 days, according to U.S. law. Trump could decide not to renew, putting U.S. trade sanctions back into effect.

In Europe, supporters of the anti-government protesters in Iran have been gathering to show their support in The Hague, Berlin, Hamburg, Stockholm, London and Paris.

People demonstrate in solidarity with anti-government protests in Iran near the Iranian embassy in Paris, France, Jan. 6, 2018.
.
At least 22 people have died in the protests and more than 1,000 have been arrested. Hard-line cleric Ahmad Khatami told worshipers in a sermon Friday that those arrested should be treated as enemies of Islam, particularly those who have burned the flag. "There should be no mercy for them," he said.

Government official Mansour Gholami has told reporters that about a quarter of those arrested have been released, but he did not provide exact numbers.

The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting Friday at the urging of the United States.

U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley called the protests "a powerful exhibition of brave people who have become so fed up with their oppressive government that they are willing to risk their lives in protests." She also addressed the Iranian government, saying, "the U.S. is watching what you do."

In response, the Iranian ambassador, Gholamali Khoshroo, said it is a "discredit" to the Security Council to hold such a meeting on Iran in the face of the conflicts taking place in Yemen and elsewhere in the Middle East. He, along with a number of Security Council members, said the United States is meddling in Iran's domestic affairs.

Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo, front, speaks during a Security Council meeting on the situation in Iran, Jan. 5, 2018, at United Nations headquarters in New York.
After the meeting, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted, "The UNSC rebuffed the U.S.'snaked attempt to hijack its mandate ... Another FP [foreign policy] blunder for the Trump administration."

Still, U.S. intelligence officials warn Tehran is at a crossroads, noting the protests are the biggest outpouring of public discontent since Iranians took to the streets in 2009 following a disputed presidential election.

"The protests are symptomatic of long-standing grievances that have been left to fester," an intelligence official told VOA on condition of anonymity. "Will it address the legitimate concerns of its people or suppress the voices of its own populace?"

"What is clear is that these concerns are not going away," the official said.

Critics of Iranian President Nassan Rouhani say he has abandoned the poor, pointing to rising prices for key commodities like fuel, bread and eggs.

via tweeter feed from inside Iran is that unrest has spread to every nook and corner. Employees in various sectors are joining unrest and not going to factories/offices. Also people are withdrawing money from banks.
Aim is to break regime's ability to fund IRG.
Overall agitation seems to have entered a chronic smouldering phase.

Who's behind the protests in Iran - an excellent and informative piece by Elijah Magnier. Elijah Magnier is one of the more informed analysts and columnists on the Levant crisis and has been closely tracking things in Middle East for some time.

https://elijahjm.wordpress.com/2018/01/ ... -benefits/
...
Iran’s security and national interest really doesn’t need wide uncontrolled manifestations when Takfiri (religious extremists i.e. al-Qaeda and ISIS) can destabilise the country and yet blend in. Moreover, Iran is also under threat from neighbouring countries like Saudi Arabia, who promise to destabilise the country from within. This follows the victory of Iran and its allies in Iraq and Syria, as well as its support to the Houthis in Yemen that is stopping Saudi Arabia from celebrating a quick victory despite its superior fire power, siege and the indiscriminate slaughtering of civilians. Also, Israel prefers to divert attention from Gaza to the events in Iran, to turn the world’s attention away from its doings in Palestine.

The greatest danger the Iranian leaders feel is coming from Israel and from the current US administration. This has manifested especially as the defiance has been publicly declared by the commander of the Quds Force in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard General Qassim Soleimani who sent a clear message asking the US forces to leave Syria. Moreover, Soleimani declared his readiness to finance and arm Palestinian organisations in Palestine to fight Israel and stop the implementation of Donald Trump’s decision to declare Jerusalem the capital of Israel.

Trump did not stand still watching: since he is in office, the US President has been working to revoke the nuclear deal, threatening his European partners – who took a different stand for the first time against the US at the UN – if they deal with Iran and help the Islamic Republic recover its economic prosperity.

Because the war has come into the open between Iran and the US (and all its allies in the Middle East), Saudi Arabia expressed its readiness to join the efforts, along with Israel, to curb the Islamic Republic of Iran and destabilise it. This leads us to the most plausible conclusion that the Iranian hardliners – who are leading the Revolutionary Guards, the Basij and the “Axis of the Resistance” – have no interest in supporting the ongoing protests which are hitting this weak economy. These protests – to the hardliner’s disadvantage – are allowing enough space for international and regional intervention to organise themselves and support those in the street.

These Iranian protesters in the street are today composed of angry youth pushed by economic grievances: others are, and remain, anti-regime, they never accepted the Islamic Republic ruling. Some protesters are pro-Shah, and others are pro-US. All this mixture with these various titles are melting together, with different objectives and goals.
pro-Shah ? Which Shah ?

Iran is public enemy No.1 for 3 nations.Soothi Barbaria, Israel and the US for assisting Assad in defeating their Syrian gambit, using western and Gulfie/Saudi funded mercenaries, the so- called "rebel Syrians " , which one US analyst said could be counted less than 100 in the motley gang.Apart from this gang that couldn't shoot straight ,the defeat of ISIS-the Wahaabi/Soothi proxy also tacitly supported in secret by the other coalition partners like Turkey, etc.,was a humiliation. This was mainly due to Russian air strikes accompanied on the ground by the Syrian- backed pro-Assad militia forces of the Hiz, etc., assisting the ADA and the Ru Spetsnaz forces. The role of the Iranian 'Orenz of Arabia", Gen.Qasim Soleymani was pivotal to the strategy and tactics of the ground forces. He and the Iranians delivered the goods. The enraged defeated trio now want their revenge.Mission " regime change" in Iran has begun. The US have enough Iranian pro-Shah exiles to use to foment mischief on the street.Money also counts.
