US Think Tank : China "Using" Pakistan To Further Its Own Interests .

Gwadar port about China's interests, not Pakistan's: US think-tank
WASHINGTON: China has both commercial and military interests in the Pakistani port of Gwadar, the US think-tank community has told lawmakers, but Islamabad of late is realising that the Chinese investment there is more about its own economic and strategic interests.
The strategic Gwadar Port in Balochistan province is being built by China under a multi-billion economic corridor. According to media reports last month, Pakistan may allow China to build a military ( naval ) base in Jiwani area which is close the strategic Gwadar port being developed by Beijing.
At the same time, recent developments indicate the Pakistani leadership has increasingly been realising that Chinese investment is more about the latter's economic and strategic interest, members of the community told lawmakers during a Congressional hearing on Pakistan by the House Foreign Relations committee. To counter Indian influence, the Paki Deep State has virtually "sold" their country to the Chinese, without thinking about the strategic consequences of their action
"Going back a decade, a lot of Indian strategists were concerned about and publicly complaining about the possibility China would build a string of pearls of port facilities and logistics facilities along the Indian Ocean rim...
"But I think they may have just come a decade too early, because what we have seen in recent years is that China does have plans for military facilities and installations," he said in response to a question from Congresswoman Ann Wagner.
"There have been reports of rising tensions. Pakistan also refused Chinese assistance for Bhasha dam because the conditions were too stringent. Pakistan's minister for shipping told the senate that 90 per cent of the revenue from Gwadar will go to China," said Aquil Shah, a non-resident scholar in the South Asia Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and Wick Cary, assistant professor in the Department of International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma. The Chinese are concerned about the safety of their nationals working in Pakistan . The expected backlash against the Chinis is likely to increase, rather than decrease !
A route through Gwadar offers China its shortest path to the oil-rich Middle East, Africa, and most of the Western hemisphere, besides promising to open up remote, landlocked Xinjiang. Indian objection to this project ( which the US agrees !) only centers around the fact that the road passes through disputed ( Kashmir ) territory

Isloo High Court Accepts Ex Fauji's Petition To Probe Mush Under NAB

NAB authorised to probe ex-army chief Musharraf over corruption: IHC
ISLAMABAD – In a landmark judgment, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to initiate investigations against former army chief General (retd) Pervez Musharraf for his alleged corruption during his tenure as president of Pakistan.
A division bench of the high court, comprising Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb, issued the directions on a petition filed by Lt Col (retd) Inamur Rahim in 2014 seeking a probe against Musharraf for allegedly holding assets beyond known sources of income and corruption practices.
The court after holding a detailed discussion on the NAO, ordered: “In the light of the above discussion retired General Pervez Musharraf is amenable to be proceeded under the [NAB] Ordinance of 1999 and thus investigated, tried or convicted there under because of two eventualities; firstly, for having held the Constitutional post of the President of Pakistan and secondly, clause (vi) of section 5(m) of the Ordinance of 1999 is attracted because he had resigned and stands retired from the Armed Forces of Pakistan”. Paki Courts are politically motivated . Decisions are based on who is pulling the strings behind the scenes. This may be the case in this matter too !
The court observed: “The bureau is vested with the power and jurisdiction to consider the complaint of the petitioner and after such consideration if it is of the opinion that an offence under the Ordinance of 1999 is prima facie made out, then it will become a duty of the latter to proceed to inquire, investigate and take all other steps mandated under the Ordinance of 1999.”
The petitioner’s counsel argued that Musharraf as army chief and president was responsible to protect the natives of Pakistan under the oath but he handed over numbers of citizens to the US to make money. He added that Musharraf in his book, In the Line of Fire, has accepted it. Rahim also accused Musharraf of injecting “corruption into the senior hierarchy of the armed forces by allotting them plots over and above their entitlements”. Ganja Sharif will be happy at this decision  [/quote
After hearing the arguments, the cour ruled: “We are satisfied that the Bureau has indeed erred in misinterpreting the provisions of the Ordinance of 1999 by refusing to consider and entertain the complaint, which had been filed by the petitioner.” "Flavour of the month" wins :D

As a human being, I would find this decision regressive and stupid, but as someone who hates Pakistan and wants to see them go down the drain, this is satisfying as they remain reassuringly retarded:

However, the film which centres around menstruation and hygiene has been banned from being released in Pakistan. According to reports, members of the Punjab Film Censor Board have refused to watch the film and have claimed that taboo subject films will not be allowed screening in cinemas. A source from the board said that all the members were hesitant to watch the film due to its content regarding women’s menstruation hygiene.

The Iran-Pakistan-India pipeline has been discussed since the early 1990s. I had said then (on a panel discussion at the obscure private conference where it was first proposed by an Iranian think-tank bloke who must be getting on in years now, I was under 25 then), and repeatedly since 1997 on BRF that this will not materialise as long as there is a "Pakistan" in between Iran and India (former member Rye will remember, he may still be here under another name). This might seem transparently obvious to many of us on BRF (not all), and I am damned sure that it is clear to our own strategic enclave. But no one seems to want to be the ones to "give it up" as a proposition - probably because of the sound underlying financial/economic logic. India will keep up the chai-biskoot on it. We have zero to lose, and no one betters us at these long-winded parleys. No one.

As I recall, when the Iranian gent proposed it, the acronym PEACE was attached to it. We had a panel disagreement in public (i.e in front of all other participants - about 150) on it. I was very young then, and I think I irritated the bloke. But he was a good human being, and later we chatted about many things and the difficulties for any aesthetic life in Iran at the time - he was struggling to get his daughter violin lessons, as she loved the instrument. Very human situation. The Iranians are a people of civilisation, a wonderful culture, and have many many similarities with our own. One day, I am certain they will come out of this poisoned daze they find themselves in.

Even then, like now, they will neither be our particular enemy, or our particular friend. We will likely engage cordially and in a civilised manner.

Leading human rights lawyer Asma Jahangir passes away in Lahore
Renowned senior lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir passed away in Lahore on Sunday, DawnNews reported. She is survived by a son and two daughters. The family told DawnNews that she suffered from cardiac arrest and was shifted to a hospital, where she passed. She was 66.
Known for her outspoken nature and unrelenting pursuit for human rights — as well as for remaining undaunted in the face of extreme pressure and opposition — Jahangir will be remembered as a champion for the disenfranchised and for her services towards building a democratic and more inclusive Pakistan. Asma was one of the relatively sane voices in Terroristan !

Paki Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar On An Ego Trip

SC orders removal of security barricades outside Sharifs' residences, other sites
LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar ordered the removal of security barricades from several key sites in the city, including the residences of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The orders came on Sunday as a three-member apex court bench began hearing its suo motu case on several issues of public welfare, including provision of clean drinking water, for which Shehbaz was present in the court's Lahore Registry. The court ordered the authorities to remove barricades outside Nawaz's Jati Umra residence, Shehbaz's Model Town residence and office, Governor House, Aiwan-e-Iqbal, the residence and seminary — Jamia Al Qadsia — of Jamaatud Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, residence of late Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, Qilla Gujjar Singh Police Station, passport office and other sites. Will the "executive branch" "obey" this sweeping order is another question
The chief justice also directed the home department to assure the bench that the barricades will be removed by midnight tonight.
The chief justice observed further that it will review the issue of barricades outside offices of security agencies and then make a decision on their removal. Is the judiciary independent of the Deep State in Pakiland ?
Chief Justice Nisar admonished security officers for keeping elected representatives confined at home, observing that the "CM is an awaami aadmi [man of the people], he should say 'Shehbaz Sharif is not scared of anyone'". When the chief justice asked Shehbaz if they are right in saying this, the Punjab chief minister replied in the affirmative. Chief Justice Nisar then remarked that the point is not to indulge in politics, adding that the judiciary and executive need to work together to safeguard public’s rights.
Addressing Shehbaz, the chief justice remarked that whoever comes to power should seriously consider making him the prime minister, to which Shehbaz replied: "Why are you after my job".
The chief justice responded that "your own people are after you". The chief justice also remarked during the hearing that, "I assure you there will be free and fair elections in the country from now on. I keep repeating this". Was the Chief Justice "smoking" something special today
The chief justice is hearing several suo motu cases on issues of public welfare, including exorbitant fees at educational institutes, state of public hospitals and provision of clean water in Lahore and Karachi.

"Advisor To Finance Ministry" Warns Of Coming Cash Crunch :D

Despite promises, Pakistan unlikely to get heavy funding by June
The Express Tribune
ISLAMABAD:
Despite having firm commitments of roughly $26 billion, the government is unlikely to get any major injection from traditional lenders in the next four months, restricting its options and pushing it to rely on foreign commercial loans and Eurobonds to meet pressing external financing needs.Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Miftah Ismail told The Express Tribune on Saturday that the option to float Eurobond “still remains on the table”, although the Ministry of Finance withdrew its summary for the issue from the federal cabinet this week. The debt option is the only option available to Pakiland ! The "artificial entity" is living on daily wages. Not knowing where its next meal is coming from
Ismail held a couple of internal meetings in recent days to review the inflow of foreign financing over the next four months. However, the results were not surprising.
The Economic Affairs Division’s projections did not show any abnormal hike in foreign inflows from the traditional lenders, said sources in the finance ministry.
Inflows from the two largest lenders – the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank – were expected to remain below the budgetary projections as both the lenders would not like to give any budgetary support due to deterioration in major economic indicators, the sources said. Project lending from them will depend on progress on the schemes. Where are the Chinis in all of this ? Are they not providing any financial support to Pakiland
In November, Pakistan raised $2.5 billion from global capital markets through a five-year Sukuk and 10-year Eurobond. It borrowed $1 billion through the Sukuk at 5.625% and $1.5 billion through 10-year bonds at 6.875 %, which was 455 basis points above the 10-year US Treasury rate. The country's major assets ( roadways, buildings etc ) are mortgaged to the hilt !
Sources said the immediate available option was to tap short-term foreign commercial loans in line with the government’s practice over the past four and a half years.

Every nation, big and small, has a coterie of useful idiots. But, this octogenarian has outlived his usefulness and should have been put out to pasture many years ago. Maybe ba(w)kistan is his greener pasture.

But my comment is directed to the article in the link above. This was supposedly a "literature" festival but people were discussing economic growth models and related experiences in sustainability. Is KLF running out of new books to talk about?

US weapons sold to Pak to fight Taliban being used against India
New Delhi/Washington: India has given proof to United States that weapons like the US TOW-2A anti-tank guided missiles that were originally given to Pakistan to fight the Taliban, are now being used against the Indian Army.
The remnants of a missile that US sold Pakistan was recovered after a fire assault and brought to New Delhi to be shown as proof to US representatives. Pointing out Pakistan's misuse of US missiles is also part of India's policy to make Pakistan lose face in the global arena. Pakistan will deny, deny, deny !

Despite promises, Pakistan unlikely to get heavy funding by June

ISLAMABAD: Despite having firm commitments of roughly $26 billion, the government is unlikely to get any major injection from traditional lenders in the next four months, restricting its options and pushing it to rely on foreign commercial loans and Eurobonds to meet pressing external financing needs.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Miftah Ismail told The Express Tribune on Saturday that the option to float Eurobond “still remains on the table”, although the Ministry of Finance withdrew its summary for the issue from the federal cabinet this week.

Ismail held a couple of internal meetings in recent days to review the inflow of foreign financing over the next four months. However, the results were not surprising.

The Economic Affairs Division’s projections did not show any abnormal hike in foreign inflows from the traditional lenders, said sources in the finance ministry.

‘High debt servicing damaging country’s image’

The anticipated minimum financing gap was $6 billion for the next four months and the finance ministry had already taken more commercial loans last month to cushion the central bank’s declining foreign currency reserves, said the sources.

The external situation became precarious after imports in January peaked at $5.6 billion – the highest level in 70 years. The ballooning trade bill suggests measures like heavy regulatory duty and non-tariff barriers to curb imports had failed to work as warned by the experts. The 5% rupee depreciation in December 2017 also could not do wonders and exports rose only modestly.

The State Bank of Pakistan’s gross foreign currency reserves are already down to $13.1 billion, lower than what Pakistan had before floating bonds in November 2017.

The Economic Affairs Division had estimated receiving around $550 million more from the ADB till June this year, which would take its total disbursements to slightly over $1 billion, said the sources. However, lending from the World Bank will not touch even $1 billion this year.

In the first half of the current fiscal year, Pakistan received less than $220 million from the World Bank against annual estimate of $1.04 billion.

Project lending from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) and China will also be within projections. So far, China has given $444 million and the IDB have provided $750 million. But Chinese commercial loans are still coming.

Pakistan had firm commitments of over $26 billion from international creditors and donors that would remain undisbursed by the end of current fiscal year, said the sources.

The amount includes roughly $10 billion from the multilateral lenders, $12 billion in loan commitments by individual countries and around $4 billion in grants.

Future options

The government was keen to acquire low-cost foreign loans and for this purpose efforts would be made to improve the flow of funds from the traditional multilateral partners, said Ismail while talking to The Express Tribune.

He said external financing needs were significant at this point in time, which would necessitate tapping other options including the sovereign bonds.

The government was set to float the Eurobond this week to raise $1 billion, but suddenly withdrew its summary tabled for approval of the federal cabinet.

“The option to float the Eurobond is still on the table and the finance ministry withdrew its summary due to the likely impact of higher US Treasury rates on Pakistan’s cost of borrowing,” said Ismail.

In case the government had floated the Eurobond this week, its cost would have jumped to a minimum 7.10%.

Sources said the immediate available option was to tap short-term foreign commercial loans in line with the government’s practice over the past four and a half years.

That part is certainly true. She was also the last hope for any number of condemned Indians in Pakistan.

On the other hand, as per Rauf Klasra, a person I admire very much and probably one of 5 Pakistanis who actually has a workable plan for his country, felt that she was on the take (via civilian/Punjab government) as well.

Pakistan bans groups on UNSC terror list
Watch this space.
The federal government has amended the Anti-Terrorism Act and the president of Pakistan has issued an ordinance for this amendment.
The amendment has been brought to declare as terrorist the organisations that have been declared as such by the United Nations Security Council. Now the government will be able to take action against these organisations with this amendment.(Are you holding your breath yet?)
The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) had also issued a notification saying that all companies have been prohibited from "donating cash to the entities and individuals listed under the UNSC sanctions committee’s consolidated list".
The UNSC sanctions list includes the names of al-Qaeda, Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, JuD, FiF, Lashkar-e-Taiba and other organisations and individuals.
And, presto! JuD is now, henceforth, known as ...(pick an arabic name and insert here).

This is simply to hoodwink the upcoming FATF meeting, just like keeping Hafiz Saeed under house arrest for some months earlier.

First Pakistani woman from Hindu minority to become lawmaker - AP
A Pakistani spokesman says the first woman from the country’s minority Hindu community is poised to become lawmaker next month after the country’s Opposition party nominated her for the Senate’s upcoming elections.

Nasir Shah, the spokesman in the provincial government of Sindh Province, says the Opposition Pakistan People’s Party has asked all of its lawmakers to vote for Krishna Kumari in the March 3 elections for the Upper House of Parliament. {Would be interesting to see how many of them actually vote}

Mr. Shah said on Monday that Ms. Kumari will be the first female Hindu lawmaker in Pakistan since 1947, when Pakistan gained independence from Britain.

Ms. Kumari says she is overjoyed with the news and that because her family was so poor, she never dared to dream of becoming a lawmaker.

Pakistani parties usually nominate wealthy or influential people for the Senate.

AIDS Epidemic In Sargodha Village

Sargodha’s village declared highly sensitive after over 250 AIDS cases surfaced
SARGODHA – In what appeared to be great negligence on the part of the health department, the virus of a lethal disease, AIDS, found in over 250 persons of a village in Sargodha.
This was revealed by Chaudhry Mohammad Akram resident to Union Council 44 Bucha Kalan in an application sent to Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He stated that screening of every person of the village was conducted and the results are shocking. He said, according to report, over 250 were found infected with the sexually transmitted disease, adding that it was turning into the epidemic.
In the application, Akram urged the chief minister to send teams of the health department and doctors, specialized in tackling the disease, to the area in order to control it. Talking to an Urdu daily, the applicant’s son said that all members of around five families, including children and women, of the village, have been diagnosed with the dangerous disease. Any correlation between the "dangerous disease" and the recent ban on Valentine Day Celebrations
He said that two brothers aged between 25-30 died recently due to this virus, adding that the disease has mostly affected the women. "Islami Mards" who are the original carrier of the disease then go and infest their Ayeshas. Just wondering loud
Last year, a new national survey found that 132,000 people in Pakistan suffer from HIV. The survey was conducted using a grant from the Global Fund, ( another "outsourcing" !) and took 10 months to complete. Sialkoti statistics ?

Upper house...that's like the Rajya Sabha, where one is "nominated in direct proportion" to the seats the party has in the lower house, right? So, if PPP were to "nominate" a qadiani and instruct all its lawmakers to vote for him/her, that person should be elected, right? But which self-respecting, pious, five timer, wadhera from the Sindhi hinterlands would do that?

No big deal. It would be one if the Hindu woman ran for the lower house outside the minority quota, and won.

After hearing this anti India rant by Asma Jahangir where she likens us to a terror state, incites "liberals" to strive for Pakistan's goals in Kashmir & denigrates office of @PMOIndia with I fail to understand why NDTV is going overboard in its praise for her in every bulletin!

(Ru)ND(i)TV giving open platform to Pukis is not surprising to BR forumers. Asma Jahangir was a very big opportunist. She filed numerous PIL's against Sharif brothers against Metro project in Lahore alleging corruption and irregularities and claimed she had proof which she would give to the court. She was later appointed as counsel and legal consultant by Punjab Government and of course she did not provide any proof during regular hearings. She was criticised by the High court there for her conduct.

I am waiting for the drama of Pukis producing and handing over a lower rung and expandable haqqani abdul and claiming he is the Number 2 or 3 in the group to get the held up $2 Billion aid from Uncle Sam.

#Balochistan leader in exile, @MehranMarri suggests @AsmaJahangir was assassinated by the #Pakistan Military's #ISI just as they poisoned the late Baloch leader KhairBaksh Marri. Demands a UN-sanctioned doctor to conduct an autopsy. #WhoKilledAsmaJahangir?
We already know this. The ISI goons could never have killed her openly to be able to get away with it.Check the medicines given to her.

A zoo in zooland.

CM Khattak inaugurates KP's 'first-ever' zoo
touted as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's 'first' zoo
It will feature lions, monkeys and different species of birds
a suitable site for establishing a zoo in the city, near the Pakistan Forest Institute...bigger than the LaWhore Zoo's covered area, which is over 24 acres.
This is a first, alright. A zoo where the pakis will be the "inmates", all in their natural habitat, going about their business (of mayhem, killings, rapes, blasts, production of kids, and fighting for scraps of food and lotas of water). A must for chini lenders and construction workers to visit, safe in their convoys as they transit through any habitation left standing after raddi and fassad.
