Looking at the Ru ABM radar system, what open info is there about our equivs if any? W would need at least 3 systems like an inverted triangle placed within the Indian "triangle" to provide a 360 deg. coverage.

we have no ABM of that size -- building sized.

the ones we have are transportable like green pine on the backs of trailers.

less aperture, range etc than the ones fielded in usa, russia, japan...

Cold War history. How a brave Russian SSBN captain saved a Typhoon class SSBN from disaster.
http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/18 ... nk-in-1991
The Harrowing Tale Of The Nuke-Laden Russian Typhoon Class Sub That Almost Sunk In 1991
The quick thinking captain that saved the vessel and the world from disaster was never decorated for his actions.
BY TYLER ROGOWAYFEBRUARY 6, 2018

A man whose quick and bold thinking likely saved the world from a nuclear disaster has died. The Barents Observer reports that Igor Grishkov, the 67 year old retired Russian Navy captain, passed away in Severodvinsk, located along the frigid White Sea. Grishkov had lived there since retiring from the Russian Navy.

27 years earlier, then Captain Grishkov was in command of one of six of the deadliest weapons the Soviet Union ever created, the massive Typhoon class nuclear ballistic missile (SSBN) submarine TK-17. It was during the most turbulent time in Russian affairs since WWII when TK-17 slunk beneath the waves in the White Sea, not far from the place of his death, that Grishkov was faced with one of a nuclear submariner's worst nightmare scenarios.

The near catastrophic event remained deeply classified for decades, but today we have a decent idea of what happened on that fateful day in September of 1991.

IMAGE FROM FACEBOOK VIA BARENTS OBSERVER
Igor Grishkov

TK-17 was ordered to execute a test launch of one of its 20 SS-N-20 Sturgeon (locally called the R-39 Rif) submarine-launched ballistic missiles. Like their host submarine, these three-stage solid-fuel ballistic missiles were absolutely massive in size, weighing a staggering 185,000 pounds and able to carry up to ten multiple independently-targeted reentry vehicles (MIRVs).

PUBLIC DOMAIN
A early photo of a Typhoon class SSBN with a graphic comparing it to a football field.

A test missile, which had inert warheads, was loaded into one of TK-17's vertical launch tubes before the submarine headed out to sea. Once launched, it would fly thousands of miles east, impacting on Russia's missile range on the Chukotka Peninsula. The exercise was largely a display of continuity, strength, and stability to a world which had just witnessed a failed coup attempt against Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev. In reality, the Soviet Union was in a state of collapse, and by Christmas of that same year it would disintegrate in full.

Foreshadowing events to come politically for the USSR, the test launch turned into a harrowing failure. On September 27th, 1991, TK-17 moved into launch depth position and ran through its pre-firing sequence. As the launch clock clicked down towards zero, instead of the 53 foot long, 23 foot wide missile boosting its way towards the ocean's surface it exploded while still cocooned inside its launch tube. The silo door that covered the missile tube was totally blown off.

The submarine shook violently and alarms rang—it seemed as if the TK-17 was doomed. Such an event would be horrific for the boat's crew, but the loss of control of the vessel's twin nuclear reactors and the live nuclear weapons it carried could result in a nuclear incident of massive proportions. In essence, the loss of a Typhoon class SSBN was the sum of Soviet Navy's fears.

BELLONA FOUNDATION/WIKICOMMONS
A picture of a ice covered Typhoon class SSBN likely taken sometime in the 1980s.

Grishkov acted quickly and decisively, ordering up an emergency blow of TK-17's ballast tanks, a move that would send the 574 foot long submarine porpoising to the surface.

The action was completed successfully and TK-17's crew was able visually examine the submarine's long forward-set missile farm. What they saw wasn't good. There were a series of fires raging near where the test missile had detonated.

The missile's solid fuel propellant had scattered across the submarine's upper surface. The rubber anechoic coating that helps the submarine from being detected acoustically was set alight and the fire would rapidly spread. 19 other missiles sat tightly packed in two neat lines of ten under and near the blaze.

Heat and ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads are a bad combination.

Once again, Captain Grishkov acted quickly and decisively, ordering a counter-intuitive maneuver for a submarine that is damaged in ways that crew couldn't fully understood at the time.

Dive! Dive! Dive!

His plan was to put the fire out in a way only a submarine can, by submerging the vessel and starving the flames of oxygen. Grishkov knew that the stricken missile's launch compartment would flood, and possibly other sections nearby, and alerted the crew to this possibility, but he had to make a decision that would save the boat from sinking, even if it meant taking on new types of damage and even possibly casualties.

GEORGES DEKEERLE/SYGMA VIA GETTY IMAGES)
A Typhoon class sub sits in port.

The crew carried out the snap order far quicker than it could normally have been accomplished. When the boat was ordered back up to the surface again the fires were extinguished. The plan had worked and TK-17 wouldn't become the embarrassment of a crumbling empire or the cause of an international crisis and environmental catastrophe.

The stricken submarine and its crew of 160 limped back to Severodvinsk where its burnt skin and badly damaged launch tube were repaired under a shroud of secrecy. The tube would never be used again and was permanently sealed off. TK-17 would go onto serve for 13 more years before being sidelined in 2004.

Grishkov was never pronounced a Hero of Russia or given an award for staving off disaster, the impact of which is hard to fathom, especially at such a turbulent time in Russian history. The Kursk tragedy nearly nine years later, which had clear parallels to the incident aboard TK-17, was controversially handled in a standoff manner by Russia, and the country wasn't undergoing anywhere near the political turmoil as the Soviet Union was in the fall of 1991
Three of the six Typhoon class boats produced still exist, with just one remaining in active service. The other two, seen here in a 2013 satellite image, which includes TK-17, await the scrapper's torch and the removal of their nuclear reactors.

Would Russia have reached out for help if one of their prized Typhoon class boomers sunk? Would embarrassment and the sensitive technology held within the relatively new submarine—the most advanced fielded at the time of the incident—kept the Soviet Union from telling the world of the disaster before it was too late? How would the overthrow of the Communist Party just months later have impacted a response effort, especially if it was highly classified at the time of the political transformation?

Thanks to Captain Grishkov and his crew we don't have an answer to those questions.

The lack of adulation towards Grishkov was largely due to the sensitive nature of the incident. Although some of the Russian Navy brass wanted to decorate him for his heroic efforts on that day, instead the powers that be chose to keep the incident secret. In turn, neither the captain or any of his crew, who all survived the incident, would ever receive the recognition they deserved.

SEVEROMORSK, RUSSIA - JULY 15, 2017: The Dmitriy Donskoy (TK-208) nuclear ballistic missile submarine leaves for St Petersburg to take part in a ship parade marking Russian Navy Day.

As for TK-17, the vessel has been sitting idle (take a look inside!) in Severodvinsk next to her sister-ship TK-20 awaiting decommissioning and disposal of their volatile nuclear reactors. A single Typhoon class submarine remains in Russian Navy service, the first one ever built, the Dmitry Donskoy TK-208.

It's mission?

PAK DA/Izdeliye 80 (©Butowski/Air&Cosmos/bmpd) . 145 tons, 30 tons payload, 15000 km range, 2 engines with 23 tons thrust based on NK-32-02. https://bmpd.livejournal.com/3088125.html

Image
Product 80 is a "flying wing" takeoff weight of 145 tons and a payload of 30 tons. PAK YES is almost twice as light as Tu-160 and is located between Tu-22M3 and Tu-95MS. Tu-160 weighs 275 tons, Tu-95MS-185 tons and Tu-22M3 weighs 124 tons. The head of long-range aviation Anatoly Yakovlev said that the PAK DA will be a plane created according to the "flying wing" scheme with subsonic speed and a range of 15,000 km without refueling. The aircraft will be equipped with two engines "Product of the Russian Federation" with a thrust of 23 tons, created on the basis of the engine NK-32-02 ("product P"). The company ODK-Kuznetsov began its development in December 2014.

During a press conference in December 2014, Anatoly Yakovlev said that the prototype PAK DA will take off in 2019, and the aircraft will go to the combat units in 2023-2025. However, in 2015 the idea of resuming production of the Tu-160M2 was accelerated and the PAK DA program was postponed to a later date. Deputy Defense Minister Yuri Borisov said that because of the Tu-160M2 program, the PAK DA project "will be postponed somewhat." It can be assumed that the plans for PAK YES have shifted to the right about five years.

ok so I guess thats what he meant by "nuclear powered missile" . Nice. i was wondering about the conventional propulsion and fuel needed - impossible in a normal size chassis. atleast he was environmentally kind enough to show the flight path over the sea onlee and did not cut across Amazonia to reach the west coast . the deep state and conservative think tanks in DC will react with paroxysm of rage by tomorrow - how dare he, (while we psst push ABM defences and radars into poland and baltic states) :D

After delivering all its warheads, the missile could then spend weeks flying over populated areas at low altitudes, causing tremendous ground damage with its shock wave and radiation from its unshielded reactor. When it finally lost enough power to fly, and crash-landed, the engine would have a good chance of spewing deadly radiation for months to come.

Reminiscent of APJAK's reusable hyper missile. If developed as Putin has said, it changes the strat. game dramatically.Nobody has anything similar esp. the underwater nuclear rocket torpedo meant to take out enemy ports , barring the US's stealth bombers. In fact this missile makes one wonder whether the PAK-DA is required at all, but armed with a v.heavy payload of LR PGMs,makes sense.

Old Cold War ideas getting a rethink. SLAM was a 1960s program and as the link provided earlier shows had its engine tested before the project was abandoned because of the escalatory nature of such a weapon. The Secret Projects Forum has a very informative thread on the program. Maintaining a deterrent beyond a triad (adding the underwater torpedo and a potential LR Nuclear powered GLCM) is going to be expensive but all the best to Putin as he funds all these programs and also looks to build up conventional capability.

these things are far cheaper than say 10 next generation SSBNs to replace the delta-IVs now nearing EOL dates...more of the Borei2 class.

the Sarmat wont be cheap but again a bargain vs the cost of a SSBN and the assets needed to sanitize the bastion areas. they could even use refurbished SS18 silos as they go into EOL.

An SSBN gives you other survivability and deployment advantages that something like this does not. You can also place those weapons much closer to the intended targets so there is that aspect as well.Is Russia giving up anything in terms of legacy capability or are these over and above? Do ICCMs do away with ICBMs, and this Undersea weapon do away with SSBNs in the future? Short of deploying cruise missiles around the world, on land, you are essentially just creating an ICCM which is not a new idea..Many such ideas have been considered before and are usually not worth it as long as your current deterrent with ICBMs is not threatened. One can literally go back into the 1950s and 60s and find scores of such concepts on both sides, and even prototype components or AURs that tried to add additional dimensions and new novel delivery systems. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOQvcoGFL80

The Avantgrad Glide Vehical is very interesting , it travels atmosperic flight at intercontinental range at more than Mach 20 , He mentioned while it travels it expereince temp of 1500-2000 * C and uses new composite materials it like a burning meteor

The Cruise Missile and Drone is more of a question of miniaturization of nuclear reactor that is small enough to fit into a cruise missile or a UUV.

all these are disruptors and supplementary plays.
Rus is building out a full complement of Sarmat, Yars and Rubezh ICBMs to replace the Topol/Topol-M and has funded enough Boreis and Bulava to retain sea based deterrence albeit only in bastion areas as they lack the numbers to spread net wide under the sea.

found some details of more information on system from president speech

Saramat :
With a weight of over 200 tons, it has a short active phase of the flight, which makes it difficult to intercept the missile defense; the range of a new heavy rocket, the number and power of combat blocs is greater than that of Voevoda. "Sarmat" will be equipped with a wide range of high-power nuclear weapons, including hypersonic ones, and the most advanced missile defense systems

According to him, the new complex "is capable of attacking targets both through the North and through the South Pole." "Sarmat" is a very formidable weapon, because of its characteristics, it does not interfere with any even promising missile defense systemsVladimir Putin , the Russian president

Aviation Complex "Dagger"

The most important stage in the development of weapons was the creation of a high-precision hypersonic aircraft-missile system. Since December 1, 2017 in the Southern Military District (SE), the hypersonic complex "Dagger" was on alert duty. According to the president, his unique flight performance allows delivering missiles to the point of discharge in a matter of minutes.

In the course of the president's speech, the test frames of this system were demonstrated, which shows that the role of the high-speed carrier aircraft is performed by the supersonic fighter-interceptor of the long-range MiG-31 (developed in the RAC "MiG"). In the video, he delivered the rocket to the point of discharge, while it flew at a hypersonic speed (exceeding the speed of sound by a factor of 10) and maneuvered on all sections of the flight path.

This allows it to also securely overcome all existing and, I think, prospective air defense and missile defense systems, delivering to the target for a range of up to 2,000 km nuclear and conventional warheads Vladimir Putin Russian President

Underwater drones

Putin touched on the topic of unmanned weapons systems, which are being actively designed and created in the world. This technique has been developed in Russia as well - an unmanned underwater vehicle capable of moving at an extremely large depth with unlimited range. "I would say, at a very deep depth and at intercontinental range with a speed that is a multiple of the speed of submarines, the most modern torpedoes and all kinds of even the most high-speed surface ships," the president said. Such drones have low noise, high maneuverability and are practically invulnerable to the enemy. Putin called this development "just fantastic."

According to the president, unmanned underwater vehicles can be equipped with both conventional and nuclear munitions. This will allow them to hit a wide range of targets, including carrier groups, coastal fortifications and infrastructure. He also said that in December 2017, a multi-year trial cycle for an innovative nuclear power plant was completed to equip this autonomous uninhabited unit. Putin specified that the nuclear installation has small dimensions and at the same time an ultra-high power capacity, with a volume of 100 times less than that of modern nuclear submarines, has a large capacity and two hundred times less time to enter combat mode.

"The results of the tests made it possible for us to start creating a fundamentally new type of strategic weapons equipped with high-power nuclear munitions," the president concluded.

A cruise missile with a nuclear power plant

Russia has developed a small-sized super-power nuclear power plant that can be placed in a cruise missile, which will provide it with virtually unlimited range and invulnerability for anti-missile and anti-aircraft defense.

"We started developing such new types of strategic weapons that do not use ballistic flight trajectories at all when moving towards the target, and so the missile defense systems in their struggle are useless and simply pointless," the head of state said, noting that these prospective weapons systems are based on the newest unique achievements of domestic scientists, designers and engineers.

One of them is the creation of a small-sized superpower nuclear power plant that is housed in a cruise missile hull, such as the newest Russian airborne missile X-101 or the American Tomahawk. At the same time, the new missile provides dozens of times more flight range, which is virtually unlimited.

According to Putin, "a low-flying low-visibility cruise missile carrying a nuclear warhead with virtually unlimited range, an unpredictable flight trajectory and the ability to bypass interception lines is invulnerable to all existing and prospective systems for both missile defense and air defense."

At the end of 2017, a successful launch of the new Russian cruise missile with a nuclear power plant was held at the Central Test Site of the Russian Federation. In the course of the flight, it reached the set power, provided the necessary level of thrust. The launch of the missile and a complex of ground tests allow us to proceed to the creation of a fundamentally new type of armament - a strategic complex of nuclear weapons with a missile equipped with a nuclear power plant

Hypersonic "Vanguard"

Another technological breakthrough is the creation of a strategic missile complex with a fundamentally new combat equipment - a planning wing unit, the tests of which have also been successfully completed. It is called "Vanguard". The complex is able to move in dense layers of the atmosphere with a hypersonic speed of over 20 Mach. When moving towards the target, it performs deep maneuvering - both side and height, which makes it invulnerable to ABM and anti-aircraft defense systems.

The use of new composite materials has made it possible to solve the problem of a long-term controlled flight of a planning wing block practically in conditions of plasma formation. He goes to the goal as a meteorite, like a burning fireball. The temperature on its surface is 1600-2000 degrees, but the winged unit is reliably controlled. Vladimir Putin Russian President

However, we can not show the true appearance of this product "for obvious reasons", Putin said.

Putin is like Castro. An American pres. once asked the CIA about the veracity of a statement by Castro. The CIA said that it was true because "Castro never lies".Same with Putin. He says what he means and means what he says.

Hats off to Russian scientists. From Sputnik on, they've been leaders in rocketry and with even existing innovative systems like Klub, BMos,Shkval,Zircon, etc.,are ahead of the pack. My worry is that the dismayed Chins who were mincing around celebrating their great military modernisation, will now embark post haste upon similar programmes using freelance Ru scientists if available.India should steadily pursue its hypersonic programmes, esp. the reusable missile.

Figured out this is solid fuel aero ballistic missile like Shaurya or islander big and dimensional small enough to be launched from mig -31 like aircraft mind you mig-31 is the largest fighter aircraft by mtow in RuAaf , when launched it flies high aero ballistic trajectory and then manoeuvres to sweep dive at target , a speed of mach 10 means they are using new high energy dense solid fuel but no ramjet or scramjet here

Thought so. Did not see any air intake or typical wedge shaped front end of scramjet
They might be using tech or parts of the new vl aam that mig31 carries i think its called k39

Here is test footage from Dagger launch from Mig-31 and post impact , I wonder if they could be carried by flanker class Su-34 and MKI , Considering MKI center carriage is test with 2.5 T Air Launched Brahmos

This has been Roosie method ever since Putin came into his own - respond to NATO conventional superiority by initially reviving and maintaining strategic forces (topol, borei, delta etc.) and simultaneously developing asymmetric response via the above programs, which have now fructified. Conventional weapons development otoh has taken the backseat and been incremental - e.g Su 35, MiG 31/29 upg versions, now the backfire etc etc. Although here too they have achieved a degree of resurgence what with about 100 new Su-30s, 50 odd Su-35s, few Pakfa on the cards, some corvettes etc., however, this resurgence is most visible in their conventional missile programs - SAMs, AAMs, ASMs, CMs.

The message is clear - their response in face of non-US conventional threats will be conventional (IOWs China, Turkey, Israel ityadi better not mess around), in face of overwhelming conventional superiority (and this could include Cheen in due time), however, response is potentially EOW scenario, period.

Almost Paki in nature, but has deterrence value nevertheless. So far, it has ALWAYS worked. I'm surprised, India won't use it more aggressively.

An Air Launched Iskander is an apt description and it is obviously optimized for this role so is smaller and goes farther because of it. In time, I expect a longer "hang time" via a BG payload like what DARPA will be launching later this year or next year of off a bomber. I am actually surprised that so far, the Chinese have not done this given their rocket artillery and similar strategy of holding large flotillas at risk. Perhaps they don't have something like a MiG-31 that can operate with that weapon and envelope. I have been baffled as to why either Israel or the US simply didn't field something like this earlier given that they have a number of Air Launched Ballistic missile target programs on record..they don't even need this to be a carrier killer with this much range (could be something in the 500-1000 km range and potentially smaller).
