IAF chopper crashes in Assam, 2 dead
The incident took place at Sumoimari Chapori, a police officer said, adding that Defence and IAF personnel were on their way to Majuli.
The article mentions a Microlight Virus SW-80 which is definitely not a chopper. Chalk that down to DDM.

On 12 October 2015 Pipistrel won an international tender, issued by the Indian Ministry of Defence, to supply 194 light trainers to the Indian Air Force (72 aircraft), Indian Navy (12 aircraft) and National Cadet Corps (110 aircraft).[11][12] The two-seat Pipistrel Virus SW 80 aircraft, known as the Garud after a bird in Hindu mythology, will be used for training of Flight Safety and Air Wing Cadets and the entire quantity of 194 aircraft must be delivered 30 months from the day of the first delivery.[11][12] The contract includes an option for an additional 100 aircraft within the third year.[11][12]
It is a high-wing, cantilever monoplane of pod-and-boom configuration with a T-tail and air brakes. The cabin has two seats side-by-side. Its fixed undercarriage can be provided in either tricycle or tailwheel configuration. It is available in three models: the Virus 912 with a 12-metre wingspan, the Virus 912 SW 80 (for "short wing" and 80 hp) and the Virus 912 SW 100, both with a 10-metre wingspan. The Virus SW 100 has an uprated Rotax 912ULS engine producing 100 hp (75 kW). The SW 100 model cruises at 273 km/h (170 mph), which is 24 km/h (15 mph) faster than the long wing 80 hp (60 kW) version.[2][3]
The aviation journalist Paul Bertorelli has criticized the aircraft's design for lack of cabin occupant crashworthiness. However, the manufacturer points out that this kind of issue is typical of aircraft in the LSA category. The design has no history of head trauma during the accidents that have occurred.[4]

These microlights are used by NCC Air Wing. May the pilots rest in peace.
Re: Military Flight Safety
So it is indeed the parachute recovery system (more common on gliders). It would no doubt be helpful in certain conditions but obviously not in all situations.

The death of a loved one can leave any person devastated, but the wife of a deceased IAF officer displayed exemplary courage when she marched at the funeral ceremony in her Army uniform along with her five-day-old daughter.
In a picture that has gone viral on social media, Major Kumud Dogra can be seen attending the funeral in her full uniform along with her daughter on Wednesday.
Dogra’s husband, Wing Commander D Vats, was killed when a two-seater microlight aircraft crashed in Upper Assam’s Majuli district on February 15.

It’s just plain tragic for our whole family that the youngest & the most committed to the nation amongst has left us
She's moved on to a better world.
Assistant commandant Penny Chaudhary, the pilot of an Indian Coast Guard chopper that crashed at Murud in Maharashtra's Raigad district, succumbed to her injuries Tuesday evening, March 27.

The pilot had sustained head injuries during the crash that took place March 10 and was admitted to a naval hospital in Colaba, South Mumbai.
The Chetak helicopter that was on a routine sortie had four people on board – Deputy Commandant Balwinder Singh, Assistant Commandant Chaudhary, and two divers -- Sandeep and Baljeet.
She breathed her last Tuesday evening. "She died last night," a Coast Guard PRO told Press Trust of India.
Who was assistant commandant Penny Chaudhary?
Penny Chaudhary was commissioned as an Indian Coast Guard officer in 2016.
Chaudhary was a native of Karnal, Haryana.
She had 555 hours of flying hours to her credit.
Chaudhary was the pilot of a Chetak helicopter that crash-landed earlier this month at Murud in Maharashtra.
She suffered head injuries during the crash and was rushed to a nearby hospital.
She was admitted to INHS Asvini hospital in Colaba, Mumbai, where she was put on life support.
She battled for 17 days before she succumbed to injuries and passed away Tuesday evening.
Chaudary was on a routine sortie on the helicopter that also had three passengers on board.
The pilots tried to land the helicopter at the sandy part of the beach but landed on a rocky patch.
Chaudhary had suffered internal bleeding after the rotor of the helicopter struck her head.
Chaudhary carried out emergency landing after the helicopter developed technical snag.
One of her colleagues called her as "a brilliant, soft-spoken officer who was popular among her colleagues for her professionalism and social conduct."
The colleague added, "It may be recalled that the officer, with her presence of mind and professional handling of the incident, had maneuvered the helicopter for safe landing and ensured the safety of the other crew members.
"The young officer will be deeply remembered by the Coast Guard fraternity for her commendable devotion to duty and selfless service towards the nation."

That's sad. The earlier reports didn't give details about the seriousness of the injury. May she be at peace. God give her family the strength to bear the loss..

She survived the hard landing but was hit on the back of the head by the slow moving rotor blade, when she stepped out.

Crash of Mi 17 v5 at Kedarnath. All occupants reported to be safe.
https://m.timesofindia.com/city/dehradu ... 590906.cmsOne person was killed and three others injured when an Indian Air Force (IAF) cargo helicopter caught fire while landing in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath today, reported ANI.
The MI-17 helicopter reportedly caught fire after it hit an iron girder while it was attempting to land in a helipad near the Kedarnath temple.
The chopper was carrying construction material from Guptakashi to Kedarnath and crashed landed just short of the helipad. It took off at 8:00am and the accident happened at 8:20am. All six IAF personnel on board are safe though the pilot sustained minor injuries on leg.
Medical assistance is being provided by the district administration and IAF.
The IAF in an official statement said, “Today morning around 0810h one Mi-17 V5 helicopter of IAF crashed near Kedarnath. All persons on-board are safe. A Court of Inquiry will ascertain the cause of the accident.”
Re: Military Flight Safety
^^ If all on-board are safe, who was killed ?
Re: Military Flight Safety
^^ the humanities educated press reporter had lots of compassion and wanted Mi17 to be treated humanly; poor Mi17 was killed, while the evil humans survived

Here is a link to the video of the crash. Looks like the tail rotor hit some iron rod at the very last sec. Also I am not a pilot but the landing approach looks very fast. May be that's how it is done

I think the helo was in trouble before it landed
Re: Military Flight Safety
Looks like the entire tail crashed behind fuselage after hitting something midsection , seems the landing was too fast as it came near could be heli down wash
All saved and safe is the best part
All saved and safe is the best part
Re: Military Flight Safety
The speed do appears to be too fast,(especially if it had lot of cargo) resulting in high rate of descent just before touchdown.
If rate of descent is too high on touchdown, the tail section will shear off from the joint from where it is connected to cargo compartment.

looks like something happened to or inside the tailboom.Austin wrote:Looks like the entire tail crashed behind fuselage after hitting something midsection , seems the landing was too fast as it came near could be heli down wash

The investigation should be fairly straightforward since the video will be able to tell the accident investigators where to concentrate and hopefully, there was no fire after the crash.
Re: Military Flight Safety
Could even be a sudden tailwind.
Re: Military Flight Safety
It seemed like the pilot was attempting a landing flare, but the heli didn't respond, maybe not enough lift, engine pitch increased at the last moment and it landed on uneven ground not any flat surface possibly overshot the helipad.
Re: Military Flight Safety
Insufficient lift to enter hover, forward motion generates additional lift, as it approached pad altitude kept decreasing.
Imho mismatch between payload and chopper capacity of given altitude, temperature and available engine power.

It looks like he may have hit the perimeter fence.
Re: Military Flight Safety
Mi8 rolling landing
full braking on touch down maybe then can be done with short strips if hover is an issue at altitude.
