there can be two theories -
one is overtraining physically before tournament and feeling the residual effects of accumulated fatigue in the later stages - happens to the best in all sports. alberto salazer a top5 marathoner was famous for his huge mileage in training, then one year he got into a duel to the death in the sun with another guy in boston marathon, had a immune system collapse and could never race much at the top again. he found a second calling as the coach of galen rupp and mo farah later

the other is as you guys say not being as physical fit as the japanis - japanis traditionally have good mental patience and good in marathons...they are known to take some little 1km circumference park and run dozens of times around it, a task which would kill lesser people out of boredom. they have people who run many many marathons a year vs 1 or 2 for a regular elite. anything long and aerobic suits them well.

either be explosive & decisive like Lin Dan or tricky and fast like Marin is the way to crush them.

https://rw.runnersworld.com/selects/due ... e-sun.html
its worth a read...both men, mighty warriors who ended up nearly killing each other.... read about salazar's problems after that effort....

afaik Sindhu's sessions start at 4am and end in the evening - 2-3 sessions a day...she is not undertrained .... maybe a fresh look is needed where she lacks

https://deadspin.com/yuki-kawauchi-can- ... 1821725233
as I said, the japanis are able to sustain huge aerobic loads and remain somehow injury free...could be genes optimized for it .... or something in diet and lifestyle that helps

you are comparing nominal GDP to PPP GDP. not correct. its 10.4 vs 2.2 India, 2.8 for UK, 1.8 for canada and 1.5 australia...totalling up to 8.3 among the big4. the next is south africa which languishes at 384b.
I know what I’m talking about here :) My data is correct . Your response is the one that goes off on a tangent talking about nominal figures . All my data is PPP, which is far more relevant simply because the commonwealth is a few rich countries and many much poorer ones, across which a pound buys VASTLY different things. In PPP terms, India already comprises over 2/3rds of the commonwealth economy. By next CWG, we'll probably be close to 3/4ths of commonwealth PPP GDP *and* ~40-50% of nominal GDP.

Fellowship shmellowship. That's what the Afro-Asian Games were meant for. If we want something like that *we* run it, not show up at the party of 3 white people (UK/Aus/Canada).

Asian games were started by Chacha Nehru in 1952 headquarter in Delhi and now India have very less clout with the Asian Games Federation.

"The Asian Athletics Championship was not realised due to "unsettled conditions" and economic difficulties of participating nations, but a meeting was organised at the Patiala House, in Delhi, among the representatives of nine Asian nations, on 12 and 13 February 1949. The meeting was attended by the representatives of Afghanistan, Burma, Ceylon, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand. The drafted constitution, presented by the sub-committee, was again revised as per the Olympic Charter—the constitution of the International Olympic Committee—and accredited. To avoid the ambiguity generated by the literal meaning of term "athletic", sub-committee rectified the primitively proposed title of the federation from Asian Amateur Athletic Federation to Asian Games Federation. Afghanistan, Burma, India, Pakistan, and the Philippines became the first five members of the Asian Games Federation after signing the constitution in its full term; the other four attendees also signed it, but it still needed the ratification by their governments or their National Sports Associations. The federation elected Yadavindra Singh as the president, Jorge B. Vargas as vice-president, and G. D. Sondhi as secretary treasurer.[5]"

Most of our best sports are in the later stages of the event.

Funnily enough, Sanjita Chanu lifted 192kg in the 53kg weight class to win her gold. Mirabai Chanu lifted 196kg (!!) in the 48kg class to win hers. That tells you just how far Mirabai has progressed. Four years ago they were both the same 48kg weight class, but the younger Mirabai only won silver with 170kg. She has rocketed past her competition and could even beat the next weight class at this level now.

From the live feed, it was clear that despite lifting her personal best 86kg + 110kg, she was not putting everything into those lifts - her form was solid, and she took it slow and steady to avoid any mistakes. No sign of 'this is almost at my limit, I have to give it everything' in her effort. I think she currently can do 205kg total at her very limit. That sort of number would get her an Olympic gold, and she needs to do 205-210 to ensure gold at Tokyo 2020 against the Chinese and Thais.

Technically Deepak Lather is 18, but he only turned 18 a week ago , so he’s a weightlifting prodigy - a national record holder, national champion and commonwealth medalist at an age when people are not even out of school. He can go far with proper training - to world standard . His clean and jerk technique is a squat and jerk style like the legendary Pyrros Dimas .

Another gold from Sathish Sivalingam, who successfully defended his 77kg title from 4 years ago.

Absolutely shocking and biased umpiring giving Pakis 2 penalty corners with 0 mins left on the clock and allowing them to equalize. There was absolutely no evidence of any foot in the video and the gora commentators also clearly said that there was no foot involved.

Pakis being Pakis will now think they are very good for any opposition. Watch ahead now for the fun to begin.

Absolutely our fault from playing good in the first 30 minutes to totally lackluster afterwards. The coach said this was not the Indian team he knew....

Another weightlifting gold - Poonam Yadav wins 69kg .

Shooters are 1-2 in the qualification rounds of both men’s 10m air rifle and women’s 10m air pistol . Two golds and silvers in the final from them would be nice .

Unbelievable!! Singapore have Feng Tianwei and Yu Mengyu. They are basically exiles from the world dominating Chinese National Team, who have won every Olympic gold for decades. I saw the final pairing and thought 'no chance of gold'. Feng in particular, is the commonwealth games singles champion in Delhi 2010 and Glasgow 2014, and won silver in Beijing 2008, plus bronze in London 2012 in addition to Singapore being former world team champion. Still one of the world's best players. Can't believe we beat them. This is like the amateur US team beating the Soviet Union in ice hockey in miracle on ice.

india womens hockey beat the olympic champion ENG team 2-1

we had some bad moments of being under pressure and a miss in last stage when ENG pulled their goalie into a field role... but generally our forwards were more skill full and used width of the semi circle well. the ENG girls looked very fit somehow did not combine that well.

Another gold from Jitu Rai in 10m air pistol shooting. And a silver from Pardeep Singh in 105kg weightlifting. He was robbed of the gold - he lifted more than the winner, but his lift was overruled by the jury even though the judges gave it green light. I hope the Indian delegation protests and tries to get it reversed.

The air rifle shooters disappointed. Both men and woman. only a bronze in mens, and just silver and bronze from the women. C'mon shooters. No one cares about your useless games record scores in the preliminary if you keep flubbing the final. The only thing that matters is gold!

Pretty good so far. Mehuli Ghosh is a new find. She just won the World Cup. She lost in the shoot-out shot. Lack of experience. Sindhu is injured. IMO she should not play in the CWG singles as WC and AG will be next and she should take care of herself. Saina and Shivani should be sufficient to take on the competition. The main challenge for the boxers will come from the British isles.

Weightlifting has been peculiar. Some winners. Some in the team who can't even lift 70-80 Kgs. May be talent pool is not that big. Also it seems they have send select few to CWG in athletics. May be saving them for AG.

We are not historically competitive in heavier weight categories in weightlifting. Our men's performance in 95kg and 105kg are an anomaly, having never done so before. We usually never medal in anything higher than 85kg. This time we won men's golds in 77kg and 85kg, women's golds in 48kg, 53kg and 69kg, bronze in 94kg, silver in 105kg (would have been gold if Pardeep's lift was not overturned controversially) and 4th in superheavy >105kg .

In any case, CWG weightlifting standard is far removed from AG and OG standard. In the last world championship, there were a grand total of two medals from the commonwealth - Mirabai Chanu's 48kg gold, and the highly controversial NZ transgender man-turned-woman lifter winning a silver in woman's category.

Plus, as Sathish Sivalingam and Rahul Ragala said, the weightlifting team's physio was not approved in time, so the entire lot were carrying injuries and helping each other. 5G 2S 2B from that group is a miracle under the circumstances.

Trivia: the legendary Kunjarani Devi's CWG record in 2006 was 166kg - good for that level but nowhere near world level. Her protege Chanu's new record a decade later is 196kg and she can probably top 200kg in training, enough to win an OG/WC gold. Huge strides at the lower end, particularly in women's.

the giant TSPian in the 105kg had a great fall in clean and jerk . in the 3rd lift he kind of lifted to knee height like a powerlifter, stood there a moment and could not even snap it up to chest position.

To continue on my rant about the commonwealth games, here's one more factor that affects our results, and underscores why our presence there is unnecessary:

CWG medal count evolution by sport
Swimming: 15 golds in 1958 -> 32 golds in 1990 -> 50 golds in 2018
Cycling: 5 golds in 1958 -> 11 golds in 1990 -> 26 golds in 2018
Athletics: 29 in 1958 -> 42 in 1986 -> 58 in 2018

Weightlifting: 7 in 1958 to 30 in 1990 to 16 in 2018
Wrestling: 8 in 1958, eliminated in 1990 (10 afterwards), 12 in 2018
Shooting: not present in 1958, 21 in 1990, peaked at 44 in 2010, down to 19 now, eliminated for 2022

We cannot win as many medals as we did in the 2000s because our main sports have been decimated of medals, while swimming/cycling have gained. Both those are focus sports for UK/Aus for Olympics, and CWG is essentially a dry run for them. India gains nothing from participating in an event where our best sports are being cut to the bone or removed.

Another Gold in Shooting by Heena Sidhu. India now looks solid in number 3 position.
Has anyone saw the Boxing match of Naman Tanwar, he has beaten the shit out of opponent without losing much of sweat and only 19 years old.

I kind of agree with Suraj, without shooting it will underscores our presence.

But if we look from different perspective, it is time to invest in Athletic and not only in Swimming alone but also in Aquatics as whole and create a good medal worthy contingent, CWG can be the good testing ground for Aquatics and Athletics. These two have about 100 Gold in OG (Tokyo 2020).

Similarly AG can be the testing ground for Shooting and Archery, Tokyo OG has 20 medal of these, seems like even OG has also reduced the shooting medals.
