Austin, You might have already read the report and hence posted the link here.
In future can you also post a sentence or two about the article.
Just good practice.

FICV program, properly planned and executed soon, can also fulfill the light tank requirement with a Main Gun System in a 20-22 ton solution that shares a lot of common parts with the ICV (hopefully tracked and not wheeled). Not to mention the usual ATGM, mortar carrier, command vehicle, ambulances, etc. More they delay on the main program, more likely they are to make ad hoc purchases of MGSs to equip the MSC.

Point taken Ramana , Sometimes it is better to post the link so that one can read it fully and posting few sentences will not give the full contextramana wrote:Austin, You might have already read the report and hence posted the link here.

Pakistan intends to purchase Russian tanks T-90
Well there goes the Army's argument for T90 anymore."We are interested in T-90 tanks and this will not be a one-time purchase, but a long-term commitment," Khurram Dastgir Khan said.
Earlier, Islamabad stated that it intends to increase military-technical cooperation with Moscow and is studying various systems of Russian weapons for new purchases, including T-90 tanks
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
If true it means the Pakis have something really Lacking in the Chinese tanks and more importantly we can really push for Arjun now.
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
I hope Pakis buy T90.

Wonderful! The Russians can sell them the "export" version, with much lower armour and specs.which the Soviets used to sell to ME nations, well knowing that they were vulnerable to western espionage and Israeli capture!
But then I thought that Al Khalid the great was so good that one of it could simultaneously destroy 3 Indian MBTs of whatever design?
In the meantime, they can sell us the Armata or assist in a JV for the FMBT whatever!

The Bheeshma is an "export version" too. So they can definitely sell it too.

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
Just for the record, there was a time when we both operated the T-54/55s and the Pakis the T-59, the Chin clone. If I remember correctly, out MBTs were fitted with dummy bore evacuators on the barrels for purpose of easy identification on the battlefield. We also upgunned the tank with the 105mm gun of the Vijayanta too instead of the std. 100mm main gun.
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
Correct. Original 100mm wasn't that great.
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
Would some admin like to look at where this thread is going?
Post 1:Pakis will buy T-90 - Russian news source about that impoverished country
Post 2: Aha - Indian army will want Armata
Post3: But never Arjun
To me this is the sort of hahahahahahahaha! talk that a bunch of people may have during a booze up. But nothing is contributed to the thread other than a sneaky derision about the Indian army. It's almost like we are outsiders sniggering at a faltu plodder army reacting to another faltu army's purchase. Perhaps some of us ARE outsiders in many ways. I don't know
IMO this is wrong. I wish we had not kicked out Akshay Kapoor - at least he would have looked in and deleted the crap.

Hakeem,
Thank you for reporting. Clean up performed.
Others,
Argue with facts, especially when you are discussing our forces. T-14 has not been ordered, not even sought!
Akshay Kapoor sahab is a little busy and a little exasperated. But he is here.

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
UVZ, Punj Corp tie up to service T-72, T-90 tanks of Indian Army.
Russian firm UVZ and Punj Corporation Pvt Ltd (PCPL) have tied up to undertake repair and maintenance of T-72 and T-90 tank engines and radiators in India.
JSC URALVAGONZAVOD (UVZ), which makes main battle tanks, has also appointed PCPL as its sole representative to undertake the repair and maintenance work in India, the companies said in a joint statement today.
An agreement to this effect has been signed between both the companies in Chennai earlier this month, it said.
Indian Army and the Indian Ordnance Board would be able to meet the critical material and logistics supply gaps for T-72 and T-90 Tanks through Indian Rupee procurement.
Awadhesh Mishra, CEO of PCPL told that this agreement would result in an expected business of around Rs 1,000 crore every year as there is a big backlog of repair work of these tanks in India.
The UVZ has said that for all the maintenance and repair activities undertaken by the PCPL including supply of required spares, the UVZ would provide full technical support, personnel and ensure conformance to quality.
It said that India has over more than 4,000 tanks and its serviceability and maintenance has been a major cause of concern.
Igor Kolikov, the Deputy Director General of UVZ has said the requirement of a suitable and simpler mechanism to improve the serviceability of tanks has been a long pending demand of the Indian government. This has now been initiated through the participation of Indian private industry. (so this was only done now after a long time for fear of losing business in the future)
Mishra said the establishment of a Private Service Centre is the first step in realisation of the Technical Service setup in India and reinforces the commitment by the UVZ to improve the overall serviceability of the UVZ products in India.
Suitable quality control and mobilisation of personnel as per OEM (original equipment manufacturers) guidelines shall be enforced to ensure timely delivery with greater degree of self-reliance, Mishra said in the statement.
UVZ and PCPL have also decided to cooperate in implementation of the "GOCO" (government owned, contractor operated) model for operation of the Army Base Workshops in keeping with the "Make in India" initiative of the government, it added.

Interesting. What prevented the MoD to come up with a solution to keep the armor rolling with Avadi, the Army Base Workshops?

Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
It's the equiv. of the Yanqui lobby peddling F- 16s for the IAF! But seriously, I doubt that the Russians would endanger the voluminous def. relationship with us by selling their top drawer MBTs to Pak. which are still in production for the Ru army. Pak may be attempting to offer the carrot of a T-90 buy, but the same MBT is in production over here. Have they lost faith with their UKR and Chinese products then? Some soiled clothing in the Paki armoured corps watching the IA's steadily increasing numbers of T-90s,Arjuns and upgraded legacy T-72s outnumber them more by the day.

^^It is the desi eqvt to say, I want to marry Aishwarya rai or Angelina Jolie, They can intend or wish what the want, but russia is not going to fund it through their tax payer's money like US so they can talk all they want ot
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
Battle scarred T72. Note that the side ERA has take a hit and while one tile may have worked as expected, the rest of the tiles are ripped off by the explosion, leaving that side vulnerable to any new shots.

As well as a another example of just paying lip service to indigenisation and not walking the talk. All plans up in the air as they say.Funding indigenous projects always gets the last priority.Kersi wrote:You mean T 14 Armata family has not yet completed all the trials ?
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
Babudom reigns supreme as always. The pvt. sector will get cheesed off and close shop if they are not rewarded for their efforts.Mediocrity of the DPSUs preferred over merit, becos babudom has little control over the budgets and expenditure of the pvt. sector. The ball is in the court of the def. Min. and Govt. of the day. They have to crack the whip and walk the talk about the "make in india" mantra.
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
I know you will continue posting on this line for a few more years about PSUs, but here are a few thoughts:
my previous post on the experience of private naval yards
Based on my conversations with service folks and private sector, this is not just babudom alone, even the force has grave concerns with the day-to-day financial jugglery of the smaller companies
Simply put, smaller players who are agile and innovative, cannot deal with the finances (huge capital locked up by erratic orders of defense departments), unless state has rich coffers like a Germany, France, Scandies, UK etc and support them tacitly (as khan alleges, correctly, in the case of Airbus ). Our smaller firms' woe with stiff financial guarantees required by the military as well as MoD is the same reason why Khan's big three defense majors are constantly acquiring smaller ones who have developed promising tech or won contracts, as well as consolidating the legacy projects of medium size ones since late 80s. This "consolidation and M&A" approach by khan's MIC coincides with the end of cold-war and the gradual ascent of Pentagon's bean-counters in prevailing over cold-warriors' constant spending patterns
Only way out for us is to gradually do M&A and shore up PSUs to deliver. Eg: the gunsmiths of OFBs seem to be slowly bucking up, though the ammo part is still patchy
They are doing that, arent they? A huge amount of Tier2 items and even frontline systems like SP artillery are gradually being done that way. Only those capital items that need huge financial guarantees are still handled by big public sector facilities, because when pakis amass troops over the boundary, we cant have smaller companies say "we cant deliver without huge financial bailout, because we had to shift operational funds to a civilian arm of our company!!". This constant rolling of operating capital by smaller firms other than the Tatas, Reliance, L&T to cause the services to go back to PSUs.Philip wrote: Mediocrity of the DPSUs preferred over merit, becos babudom has little control over the budgets and expenditure of the pvt. sector

Valid points HNair. Pip yard's inability to deliver a case in point. However, the pvt. entities like Mahindras, Tatas, etc. are far more capable of delivering an FICV than smaller firms. They have a strong track record in the auto industry and have developed their designs/variant like Tatas.
Re: Armoured Vehicles Discussion Thread - August 9, 2014
The F mag has an article about the IA's future plans for its
armoured corps. It is emulating the Ru family of Armata AVs, with a 50t MBT, with a remote turret. ICVs and a new fire support AV like the new Ru Terminator .This AV is in between an MBT and an ICV giving fire support to the MBTs which in recent years have become vulnerable to deeply entrenched RPG and ATGM ground forces as the Israelis discovered, suffering heavy losses of Merkavas in the last Lebanese spat. This AV armed with ATGMs and a heavy cannon is meant to take care of these forces especially in urban warfare.A family on AVs based upon a new chassis including specialist AVs is planned. The piece gives a detailed dxplanation of the Ru armoured warfare doctrine which the IS wants to emulate.
