Sushma Swaraj gives geography lesson to J&K student
NEW DELHI: Union minister for external affairs Sushma Swaraj on Thursday gave a lesson in geography to a Jammu and Kashmir student studying in the Philippines, whose Twitter bio said he was from “Indian Occupied Kashmir.”

Sheikh Ateeq had tweeted to Swaraj for help with his damaged passport on Wednesday. “I am from J&K doing medicine course here in Philippines my passport got damaged I applied for new one 1 month ago I request u pls help me to get it as i literally need to go home for medical checkup (sic),” Ateeq had tweeted on Wednesday morning from his now deleted Twitter account @SAteEQ019.

The very next day, Swaraj replied saying help was certainly possible, but his location, as outlined by him, was a problem. "If you are from J&K state, we will definitely help you. But your profile says you are from 'Indian occupied Kashmir'. There is no place like that," she replied on Thursday morning.

The tweet got a flurry of reactions on Twitter, attracting nearly 1,300 replies, 18,000 likes and 7700 retweets by evening.

Swaraj’s tweet prompted Ateeq to modify his location to "Jammu & Kashmir/Manila" barely 15 minutes after the minister replied to him. Soon after the modification, Swaraj acknowledged the change, tagging the Indian embassy in Manila, asking them to assist the student. “I am happy you have corrected the profile. Jaideep - He is an Indian national from J&K. Pls help him,” the minister tweeted. Jaideep Mazumdar is India’s ambassador to Philippines.

However, Ateeq’s Twitter profile has been deleted since. A search for his handle yields a page with the message “Sorry, that page doesn’t exist!”

the present govt was voted to power on the specific demand of dropping Art 370 and undoing the grave injustice of Art 35A.
now in the Supreme Court the Govt has changed its tune and reverted to the old appeasement policy

Appearing for the petitioners, senior advocate Ranjit Kumar said Article 35A of the Indian Constitution and Section 6 of the J&K Constitution read together provided that while a state subject, if she returned from Pakistan having migrated before 1954, would be entitled to employment and could own property in the state, Indians from others states would not be entitled to the benefits even if they were born and had lived in the state for decades. "These are discriminating provisions and must be struck down as unconstitutional," he said. .
.
Before a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud could comment, attorney general K K Venugopal said, "This is a very sensitive issue. Since the Kashmir interlocutor is meeting people from different strata in political and social spheres to find a solution to the issue, it will not be prudent to pass any interim order on these petitions at this stage one way or the other as it can be counter-productive to the process which is ongoing."

the counsels appear to be arguing that an injustice if perpetuated for a few decades should be the law of the land. how much further can they fall remains to be seen in appeasment policy.
The AG was joined by senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, who appeared for J&K, and dissuaded the bench from passing any interim order. "The issue under challenge is already covered by judgments of the SC. The challenge involves Article 35A of the Constitution of India, Section 6 of the J&K Constitution and the Presidential Order, 1954, issued under Article 370 of the Constitution. As long as they are valid, the petitioners cannot get any interim relief. There is, therefore, no urgency as these issues are decades old," Dwivedi said.

What army’s ‘restraint’ in J&K means
Lt-Gen Syed Ata Hasnain (retd)
A unilateral restraint in operations is no indicator of weakness. It is a display of confidence and will to seek peace. The concept must be such that in case of failure, the return to operations must not witness greater terrorist capability.

It would be some arrogance on my part to dispute Ata HasnainJi, but I will have to disagree with him. This is a bad move. The part that gets my goat in all these analyses is that somehow the TSP factor is overlooked. You declare a ceasefire only when you have the nemy by its b@lls and they have signaled some kind of a compromise. Now unless ModiJi got a private phone call and DovalJi has put in place a verification mechanism, that TSP is willing to compromise on its core demand of India having to let go off the valley and they will hold back pigLeTs, this ceasefire, like others before will fail. TSP will come out stronger. Even the local KM demand for secession and azaadi is as fierce as before. My take is that TSP has squeezed the b@alls of its PDP puppets and asked them to make this maneuver. Pakis are the main movers and shakers in the valley. This has not changed.

very sad news. it appears that people dwelling in the villages near the border are suffering very heavily. some unfortunate families lost loved ones. These village folks are rarely well off. They livelihood is agriculture based and I doubt they have the financial clout to migrate to safer places.
apart from the usual mealy mouthing "kari ninda" The Govt meanwhile much like preceeding govts is doing nothing -other than claiming pak is suffering heavily.

Tension flares-up on IB again, BSF jawan, 4 civilians dead; 15 injured

http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/tension-f ... 5-injured/
While India announced ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir during holy month of Ramzan, Pakistani Rangers violated ceasefire on the International Border rattling up entire Arnia and RS Pura sectors in this district with heavy mortars and automatic weapons early today, killing five persons including a BSF jawan and four civilians, one of them a couple and injuring 15 others, two of them seriously. A number of cattle also perished in the shelling while several houses suffered extensive damage.
Pakistan was reported to have suffered casualties in retaliatory firing by the BSF. Several posts of the Rangers were hit in the BSF action.

causalties
A BSF jawan was hit by splinters of mortar shell at village Jabowal in Arnia sector and attained martyrdom. He has been identified as Sita Ram Upadhyaya, 27, son of Brijnandan Upadhyaya R/o Pirtand, Giridh in Jharkhand. He is survived by his wife and two children, including a 3 year old son and one year old daughter.
A couple was killed at village Chandu Chak in RS Pura sector at about 8 am when a mortar shell fell inside their house and exploded. They were identified as Tarsem Lal, 50, and his wife Manjeet Kour, 45.

Every Indian Government has been extremely unfair to Jammu and Ladakh while pandering to the Kashmiris and Pakistanis. The Pakistanis demand Buddhist majority Ladakh and Hindu majority Jammu in addition to Kashmir. And while Indians can't buy land in J&K, Rohingyas are settling with impunity aided by the Ummah

In Jammu the current govt both at the Center and in the State garnered votes by claiming that it will undo the injustice wrought on Jammu and Ladakh through Art 370 and Art 35A. But the tall electoral claim of the politicos to undo Art 370 and Art 35A was a mere jumla. The Govt is busy in pursuing an appeasement policy towards the peacefuls.

Four terrorists have been gunned down. As I said ceasefire was for optics. There are many Kashmiri Muslims working for the Indian army and govt. In an area practically without any non-Muslims ground intelligence will be hard to get without local collaboration. And without ground intelligence you won't get the kill rates you are getting. So use your brains and stop shouting Jumla. Art 35A and Art 370 are both constitutional amendments and govt does not have numbers. The only criticism that can be made is that they should not defend it in SC.

Pak bunkers busted, assets destroyed by BSF troops along International Border

JAMMU: The Border Security Force (BSF) today said that the Pakistan Rangers today "pleaded" with them to stop firing along the International Border (IB) after being pounded with heavy artillery that also left a trooper dead across the border.

The border guarding force also released a 19-second thermal-imagery footage showing the destruction of a Pakistani picket across the border in retaliation to the unprovoked firing and shelling along the IB.

"(Pakistan) Rangers called up Jammu BSF formation today and beseeched to stop firing," a BSF spokesperson said.

"The befitting reply by BSF units to the unprovoked shelling and firing across the IB by Pakistani forces has forced them to plead for ceasefire," a senior official said.

"For the last three days, the precision fire of BSF troopers on Pakistani firing locations inflicted heavy losses and yesterday, one of the rangers was in chicken neck area," the official said.

The BSF had lost two of its jawans in this latest round of unprovoked firing on the Jammu IB over the last few days.

A number of civilians were also killed and injured in the Jammu area due to this firing incident which was seen to have increased in the wake of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's day-long visit to Jammu and Kashmir yesterday.

Jammu and Kashmir witnessed a spurt in Pakistani shelling and firing along the IB and the Line of Control (LoC) this year.

Over 700 incidents of fire and shelling were reported, which left 38 people, including 18 security personnel dead and scores injured.

What's up with the X-Army officers on twitter hailing the cease-fire..? I saw quite a few on my feed in last few days. Some of of them are usually seen cursing Modi govt on OROP and deriding desi MIC products so I can understand at least where they are coming from. But there are some who are usually quite sane. I am bit perplexed.

And some of the so-called RW folks are trying to paint is as some kind of master stroke.

My first thought when I saw that post was that his statement sounds very much like what ISPR-sponsored anchors on Paki shows would say to reassure and boost morale of their jihadi awaam. This guy sounds like he has turned into an MSA/MKB type person, and the below article bears it out:

It looks like he was RAW chief from 1999 to 2000 so Kargil might have happened under his watch too.

Security forces have new mantra in Kashmir: 'Try to catch them alive'

SRINAGAR: "Catch them alive" is the new mantra in Jammu and Kashmir as security forces, which have killed over 70 terrorists in the last seven months, shift gear to focus on finding new recruits and motivating them to return to their families, senior officials said.

The strategy of police and security agencies is to cut the "umbilical cord" by smashing the overground worker network, which is instrumental in radicalising youth and pushing them to jihad, the officials said.

"Our effort is to catch them alive and understand their grievances. After all, a 15 or 16 year old boy can't be brainwashed to the extent that he would like to be killed in a gunfight. There has to be a counter-narrative," said a senior official engaged in counter-insurgency operations.

In the run-up to the Centre asking security forces not to launch operations during Ramzan,
there was need to eliminate hardcore terrorists like Saddam Paddar, Esa Fazili and Sameer Tiger as they were the brains behind the fresh influx of cadres for Pakistan-based terrorist groups Lashker-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed and Hizbul Mujahideen, officials said.

After the elimination of several top leaders, efforts are now on to change the script.

Operations based on specific intelligence inputs will continue but there will also be increasing emphasis on catching newly-recruited terrorists alive, they said.

"We have got indication from our field intelligence that many desire to return. Some parents have also approached us and we have no hesitation in helping them resume their normal life and education at the earliest," a senior police official said.

Many officials, including those from intelligence agencies, believe the present cessation of hostilities may provide the much needed window to convince parents to woo their wards back to textbooks.

"In the last seven months, four new recruits + have been arrested while one returned," said Inspector General of Police (Kashmir range) Swayam Prakash Pani, who has been closely watching the situation in the Valley and is using his experience as deputy inspector general in south Kashmir to tackle militancy.

The aim, he said, is to create a conducive atmosphere so that people can get over the cycle of violence.

"My director general of police (S P Vaid) has also appealed to misguided youths and so I am asking them to return to their families," Pani told PTI.

Several people from various parts of the Valley have been booked in the last seven months. They were entrusted with the indoctrination of young minds and motivating them to pick up arms, officials said.

The identification of these overground workers is necessary before a crackdown on the militant top brass, they explained.

"The militants also know that their basic structure of the overground network, which used to facilitate their movement from one place to another, has been hit. You can't be holed up at one place for days together," an official said.

The multi-pronged strategy -- including encounters with militants, fighting their overground workers in courts and smashing their network of sympathisers -- has also brought down the number of videos on social media showing groups of militants roaming freely in the orchards and forests of Tral, Shopian and Kulgam in South Kashmir.

The trend is now a single militant posing in a closed room with a rifle so the location can't be identified, an official said.

"The trend of videos has ended as security forces have gained an upper hand," he added.

Most of these folks are poor families immigrated to Punjab to work in farms as labor. My own village is about 15 KMs from border and have seen how 20-30 people from the same village in their native (UP, Bihar, Jharkhand) work together taking care of sowing, harvesting, etc. They are given contract for each season and usually stay close to the land in a makeshift camp (unprotected). The BSF has a barbed lighted wire about 1/2 a KM before international border. Many villagers have to go across the barbed wire everyday which BSF let them to work all the way to the International border (They are usually sent along with 1-2 BSF soldiers). They can be easily targeted from Bakistan, Bakis too work in their fields along the border but BSF usually do not harass them. Baki rangers on the other hand are known to shot cows, etc to incite and/or mock BSF. Many chiefs in villages along the border have contacts across the border and they are involved in smuggling (drugs, opium, indian items, pan leaves, etc).

The news is on Outlook and Rediff as well. However the original report in the Kashmiri press was that he was caught in a compromising position with a girl (whatever that means, WTF two adults do in their own time is their own business) and most of the headlines are perpetuating that idea. However if you look at the actual news, nothing really happened and a hotel tried to prevent a Kashmiri man and woman from going to his hotel room and that led to an argument, which in turn brought in the police. So probably mountain being made out of a molehill, but expect the closet-Paki media to make a big deal out of it.

^^^ The story on the Major being detained seems to be made up.Deccan Herald seems to have a better report.
1. A chap books a hotel room in the name of Gogoi from Assam.
2. He arrives with a driver and a 16 year old girl from Budgam area.
3. Hotel staff asks for ID proofs, which leads to an argument. Police is called in.
4. “The army officer was handed over to his unit after his statement was recorded. The statement of the girls is also being recorded for probing the matter.”. That is no arrest, no detention by the Military Police etc. Most likely no case itself.

But this report by shady news outlets would be now used in other news papers which have an anti-Military and pro-Jehad bias.

Worrisome part is if the girl was an intel asset she should not be exposed and given to the Police. Reminds me of Maharashtra Police arresting Vicky Malhotra.

Army chief has promised exemplary action if major found guilty so far only charge on him is of being in an unauthorised area
https://www.hindustantimes.com/india-ne ... sboBN.html
The initial documents presented to the police by the woman in the row involving army officer Leetul Gogoi, and a Kashmir hotel, revealed that she was not a minor and that she had come to meet the army officer of her own volition, said a senior police officer, who asked not to be identified.

On Wednesday, Gogoi, the woman, and a local man were detained by the police.

Gogoi had booked a room in a hotel and the other two reached the hotel wanting to meet him in his room. When the staff demurred, an altercation broke out following which the police were summoned.

Gogoi was subsequently allowed to rejoin his unit, the Rashtriya Rifles.

Gogoi shot to fame after tying a Kashmiri civilian to the front of his jeep, apparently in an attempt to prevent stone-pelters from targeting his convoy.

In her statement to the police, the woman said she had gotten in touch with Gogoi over Facebook.

The woman’s Aadhar card, which was given to the police, shows that she was born in November 1999.

The senior police officer added that “the probe is still on and no conclusion has been reached so far”.

“So far there is no legal case here, but tomorrow the girl and her family can turn around and say something,” said the police officer.

Another police officer said Major Gogoi had violated the standard operating procedure with his presence in the area. “The head of his unit was not informed. He had checked into the local hotel without backup, he was moving without security. That is breach of the standard operating procedure,” said the officer. The army has so far not issued a statement on the matter.

People familiar with the matter in the Army’s headquarters said it would decide the course of action only after the conclusion of the police probe.

Former Corp commander of the Chinar Corps, Lt General (retd) Syed Ata Hasain, wrote on Twitter that the “only legal sticking point can be the Major’s presence in an unauthorised area”.

Army Major Leetul Gogoi still has lot to answer for, say Jammu and Kashmir cops, as confusion prevails over 'minor' girl's age
seems to be some confusion regarding girl's age, if minor this could be trouble though her aadhar card says she is major

according to some portals army has ordered court of enquiry

So use your brains and stop shouting Jumla. Art 35A and Art 370 are both constitutional amendments and govt does not have numbers. The only criticism that can be made is that they should not defend it in SC.

Art 35 A was added to the Constitution through a Presidential Order on 14 may 1954. It was never discussed or routed through Parliament.
Since Art 35 A was never discussed in Parliament it is not printed as a part of the Constitution after Art 35. That in my humble opinion would impinge on the privileges of Parliament. from the link below it can be observed that Art 35 is followed by Art 36
https://www.india.gov.in/sites/upload_f ... ntents.pdf

I am unsure what strength in Parliament has to do with the continuation of Art 35 A. IMVHO It is a violation of the doctrine of Parliamentary supremacy.
question is what prevents the President from rescinding the Presidential Order, i.e., The Constitution (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order, 1954.

Yes, but Art 35A is in SC. Govt usually don't interfere in matters subjudice. Once SC takes a call it is upto govt to decide what it wants to do. Legal advice will be necessary to find out if it can be rescinded just by Presidential order.

Major Leetul Gogoi court of inquiry: Slow down...slow down, sketchy facts don't rule out possibility he's being set up

Major Leetul Gogoi court of inquiry: Slow down...slow down, sketchy facts don't rule out possibility he's being set up

Before we throw Major Leetul Gogoi under the bus, it seems only fair to confirm exactly what was going on between him and this girl who no one is sure is a minor or not.

There are already conflicting reports on that score. From what we know so far, all that has happened is this officer and the girl of indeterminate age were ostensibly trying to check into a hotel in Srinagar when the police were summoned to prevent this earth-shattering development from occurring.

Not to be flip, but if hotel managements were so touchingly diligent, the hospitality industry would have ground to a halt.

One would think that this is the first time a man and a woman have checked into a hotel, an act needing a call to the cops who have been tracking the major since he hit the headlines for tying an alleged stone pelter to the bonnet of his military jeep and getting his boys out of a tricky situation.

Even the moral police in conservative systems are not so trigger happy but this check-in prompted the police to move in and save the day. The doubt that Gogoi was possibly being set up must stay on the table.

Also, in the greater scheme of things, the overreach is a minor blip and does not need the chief of the army to start giving statements of stringent intent. It is a local matter coming under local command and there is no need for the COAS to get involved to this degree.

It colours the court martial context and sounds as if an example is to be made of Gogoi for conduct unbecoming of an officer and a gentleman. He has already been sacrificed to appease some political agenda. This is not justice, it is politics.

This lady, whoever she is, was not kidnapped or bullied into accompanying Gogoi. No one caught Gogoi in flagrante delicto or in any such compromising situation. So far, the only crime seems to be that the hotel management thought it fit to call the cops on an army officer who is controversial and no favourite of the authorities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Unless we know what the motive was and who the girl is, there seems little cause to place the officer under house arrest, relieve him of his duties and establish grounds for a possible court martial. This is unholy haste and designed to generate prejudice before the fact.

We are ruining a career and a reputation with very little concern for all the facts and that is unfair and unacceptable.

CROSS POSTED FROM TERRORISTAN THREAD

This Kind Of Thing Is Very Unlikely To Happen In Pakistan !!!

Jailed Separatist Leader's Daughter Tops CBSE Class 12 Exams In Jammu And Kashmir

Srinagar: The daughter of separatist leader Shabir Shah has topped the CBSE Class 12 exams in Jammu and Kashmir, scoring 97.8 per cent marks.
Suma Shabir Shah, a student Delhi Public School in Srinagar's Athwajan, scored 489 out of 500 marks. Sama's father is lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail. He was arrested by the National Investigation Agency or NIA last year in July in a decade-old case of terror funding. The Enforcement Directorate had also filed a charge sheet against Shabir Shah that had accused him of being in touch with Pakistan-based terrorist Hafiz Saeed.
IMO, this, once again proves India's democratic credentials ! Any anyone ever imagine a similar situation in Pakiland like for instance the daughter of a Balochi or a Pashtun separatist leader, allowed to score top marks ! First the whole family would be hauled in jail , their patriotic credentials challenged !!!
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti congratulated Suma for her performance. "Congratulations to Sama Shabir Shah for securing 97.8% marks in the class 12th class examination. Her hard work & determination has helped her overcome all odds & she is truly an inspiration for the youth of our state," Ms Mufti tweeted.

Paytm Vehemently Denies Data Sharing Allegations After Sting Operation!

Cobrapost, a news publication founded by Aniruddha Bahal, who was the co-founder of Tehelka, has published a video wherein a sting operation has been shown against Paytm’s Senior Vice President Ajay Shekhar Sharma.

In the video, Sharma allegedly says that after the stone pelting incident in Kashmir last year, Prime Minister Office asked Paytm to share user’s data, to confirm and identify stone pelters.

In the video, Sharma says, “When the stone-pelting stopped there in J&K, I personally got a phone call from the PMO. They told us to give them data saying maybe some of the stone-pelters are Paytm users. Do you understand.”

This video was shared yesterday, and quickly become viral as users of Paytm expressed their disappointment and shock over this.

How can Paytm share their users’ data to Govt., without their consent, asked thousands of users.

Gilgit & Baltistan are being illegally incorporated as Pakistan's province.

Pass a law that bans any company or subsidiary from doing business in India if they are involved in any investment or usage of infrastructure in Gilgit & Baltistan without India's approval.

If they ship anything through that region without India's permission, boot them out of India pronto.

I read the whole book, end-to-end. There are no earth shattering revelations in the book. Either both of them were circumspect and wanted to just talk Track-2 diplomacy stuff or have no clue on current situation.
To me ASD comes across as another Wagah Kandle kisser while Durrani is typical Paki who thinks that they are strategically brilliant and Kashmir solution is just one step away and that step has to be taken by India. No mention of Terrorists or even acknowledgement of 26/11, Attack on Parliament, Pathankot,Uri or other terror activities.
Even on surgical strikes, he appears dismissive. Nothing in the book which a regular browser of Paki and US thread on BRF would not be aware of.
ASD for me, cuts a sorry figure. His analysis of situation even after being in IB and RAW is hardly school level. Even a troll on BRF probably would analyze and understand Paki perfidy better.

It is more and more on Kashmir and how great Mushy the Kargil killer was and How much Durrani dislikes Modi and AD.
Now suddenly ABV has become the great leader and MMS almost there while Advani could have been if he had not sabotaged Agra summit.
Don't know why Paki GHQ is up in arms for this book. There aren't even 'oh really' moment in the book. maybe they are going to get commission from the book hence the PR exercise.

If you are planning to spend money on this book, I would suggest, don't.

From the book,
"A.S. Dulat: When we talk of Kashmir, I’m confident that General Saheb and myself Culd co-opt Farooq Abdullah and the three of us could sit down together. A lot on Kashmir could be done. If, for some reason, Farooq alone is not acceptable, then co-opt two persons: Farooq and a separatist like Prof. Ghani. Two of us and two Kashmiris. We could trigger some excitement. All it requires is reasonableness."

PS: In my opinion, Punjabis who migrated from West Punjab should not be allowed to head RAW or IB for one more generation.
They tend to fall back into the notion of Mera lawhore and mera pind and my best friend Abdul.

J&K: Security forces on high alert after reports of 'large scale infiltration'

SRINAGAR: Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir have been put on a high alert following reports of large scale infiltration of terrorists in the Valley from across the Line of Control, officials said here today.

There are reports of infiltration of over 20 terrorists into Kashmir from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) recently, the officials said.

They said most of the militants are believed to be affiliated to Jaish-e-Mohammad outfit headed by Maulana Masood Azhar.

The security grid is apprehending a spike in terrorist attacks in the state, particularly in the Valley, the officials said.

The security forces have been asked to remain on a high alert and maintain vigil around sensitive security installations across the state, they said.

The officials said it is rare for such a large number of terrorists to infiltrate in one go and indicated the desperation of their handlers across the LoC to keep the Kashmir pot boiling.
