Indian Missiles News & Discussions - May 2017
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
The January test of Agni-V was termed 'user-associate' test. I hope that this, coming so soon afterwards, is a complete 'user test'.

I am surprised. I was expecting an Agni III test flight given Kurups computation, based on NOTAM information, of a test flight distance a tad over 3,000 km:

^^^ I have seen no NAVAREA warning for a distance >3.000km barring the one posted by Kurup to which I have refered to.
If there is another NAVAREA warning aka NOTAM, please do post it here along with the computed distance in km.

This test was from the rail launcher. Was the last test from a road mobile launcher or what?

Does the livery of the missile signifies anything? Earlier ones used to be white ones while this one seem to be in camouflage

There is a rail track but this is NOT from a rail launcher see the TCT-5 launcher which has tires !! The TEL wheels are running inbetween the tracked linePhilip wrote:This test was from the rail launcher. Was the last test from a road mobile launcher or what?
If you see carefully four pylon legs have come down to lift the TEL to stabilize it for launchnd you can see the penultimate wheel actually off the ground !!
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Launch was from a mobile road launcher.Philip wrote:This test was from the rail launcher. Was the last test from a road mobile launcher or what?
It just appears to be a rail launcher as the deatched road mobile trailer is parked in an area that has embedded rails.
Focus on the wheels, you will find they are rubber tyres and not steel wheels.
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
OK. So the NAVAREA indicated distance is a tad over 3,000km as I had intially assumed as the diagram and NAVAREA NOTAM, though posted by different persons namely Kurup and you, are still related to the same test event. That then makes it at the far end of the range capability for the Agni III and about a generous bit over middling for the Agni V.prasannasimha wrote:This was posted by me before .prasannasimha wrote:

Strange then an Agni V has been tested for what fot it is a piffling 3,000Km range
Have I densely missed something

BHUBANESWAR: India on Sunday successfully conducted a user associate trial of inter-continental range ballistic missile Agni-V from a defence base off Odisha coast inching closer towards its early
induction in the armed forces.
Indigenously developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the weapon system capable of delivering the nuclear warhead with high precision blasted off from a hermetically sealed canister at Abdul Kalam Island of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at about 9.50 am.
Defence sources said the missile was fired in full operational configuration and it covered over 4,800 km in 19 minutes. "The successful trial is a major boost to the defence capabilities of the country. The Made-in-India weapon system proved its robustness paving the way for an early induction," said an official.
As the missile is expected to be inducted in the armed forces soon, personnel of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), specially raised to handle Agni-V, were present during the operations to get acquainted with the system and trained.
The mission team celebrated the moment as the missile pierced into the sky, spewing thick yellow and white smoke. This was the sixth test of the missile and the second this year. All the six missions have been successful.
The flight performance of the indigenously built missile has been tracked and monitored by radars, range stations and electro-optical tracking systems all through its trajectory. All objectives of the mission have been successfully met.
The missile, powered by three-stage solid rocket motors demonstrated a flawless spectacular launch in auto mode and followed its entire trajectory in the textbook manner, dropping the three motors at predefined stages into the Bay of Bengal.
"The test reaffirms the country’s indigenous missile capabilities and further strengthens our credible deterrence. It has now matured. The missile reached its destination and hit the bull's eye," the official added.
Agni-V is the country’s first intercontinental range ballistic missile which is capable of hitting targets in all Asian countries and parts of Africa and Europe. The 17-meter long, 2-meter wide, three-stage, solid-fuelled missile can carry a payload of 1.5 tonnes and weighs around 50 tonnes.
Meanwhile, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has congratulated all DRDO scientists, staff, armed forces and industries for the success of Agni-V mission.
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Tested at 4,800 km per Hemant Kumar Rout.
However converting ground track based on information in the NAVAREA NOTAM gives a tad over 3,000km .

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Looks like it travelled at 4,2 km/sec on average to cover that range , typical IRBM speedDefence sources said the missile was fired in full operational configuration and it covered over 4,800 km in 19 minutes.
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Hemanth Kumar Rout can only be believed if one assumes that India flew the Agni V for 1,800 km without giving any safety warning to Aircraft or Ships …………….
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
This flex nozzles in all stages bit seems to suggest (just extrapolating) a K4 type 3d maneuvering trajectory to defeat Chinese ABMs. The SFDR development talks about a nozzle less booster on a SAM/AAM which demands it to be even more maneuverable.
The paint scheme I believe was last seen on Prithvis operated by SFC, maybe the canister also gets some similar paint scheme.
They probably surprised themselves by reducing the testing turnaround time to 6 months, the last test was in January 2018. Doklam effect?
And another observation, the MH370 search ended probably just a day before near the target zone. Now China seems to support the search if any new "leads" come up.

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
maybe 4800km is distance through air while 3000km is the ground track. Could be a high angle shot to test flying time but not max ground range
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Looking at map only a 8000km kind of shot would safely clear the australia to south africa air and sea lanes. Ior is a gigantic place
3000km is parallel to indonesia
3000km is parallel to indonesia
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Flex nozzle based booting phase manuvering could somewhat help mask spacebased sensors by reducing their accuracy of estimated azimuth and elevation. That is first key to cue abm radars to narrow down the search volume. But that is not much of an handicap to abm systems during warlike condition.vasu raya wrote:This flex nozzles in all stages bit seems to suggest (just extrapolating) a K4 type 3d maneuvering trajectory to defeat Chinese ABMs.
What all stage flex nozzles do offer is greatly reduce weight of velocity correction package on the RV / mirv bus. IOW better nail to tail ratio of warhead.
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
^^^ add to above, all flex stages also enable testing all flight stages on shorter test range without using classic depressed trajectory . But that is side benifit.
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Congrats to all those involved with Agni-V induction into SFC, we have entered into a new era with a clear statement to join big boys.

Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
Would the operationalization of A5 be very different from 3 or 4??
Re: Indian Missiles News and Discussions - May 2017
This is the second A5 test within 165 days of he last one. Seems government wants a missile group commissioned to induct this missile in operational role ASAP.The norm till now was 3-4 successful development and user trials before the A series missiles were inducted. After 6 successful tests of A-5 i hope the trial launches are now over. All efforts should now be towards the next logical step for India (A-6) with MIRV
