North Korea’s Trump-Era Strategy: Keep Making A-Bombs, but Quietly
WASHINGTON — For seven years, Kim Jong-un has pursued an in-your-face strategy for building his nuclear arsenal: detonating blasts underground and firing missiles into the sky, all to send the message that his country’s nuclear buildup is irreversible.
Now he appears to be changing his approach, current and former American intelligence officials say, tailoring it to his reading of the man he met for a few hours three months ago in Singapore: President Trump.
North Korea is making nuclear fuel and building weapons as actively as ever, the publicly available evidence suggests. But he now appears to be borrowing a page from Israel, Pakistan and India: He is keeping quiet about it, conducting no public nuclear demonstrations and creating no crises, allowing Mr. Trump to portray a denuclearization effort as on track.
Mr. Kim’s new forbearance has helped keep a stream of warm words coming from Mr. Trump. A week ago, the president praised Mr. Kim, with whom he says he has forged a special relationship, after the North Korean leader refrained from parading missiles down the streets of Pyongyang during a military celebration. On Tuesday, President Moon Jae-in of South Korea will visit the North Korean leader in Pyongyang for their third meeting, and over three days the two men are expected to discuss a “peace declaration” that the North has said must precede any further discussion of disarmament. Looming over the meeting is the post-Singapore stalemate on progress despite Mr. Trump’s new tone of accommodation, including his openness to a second meeting with Mr. Kim. After declaring a year ago that Mr. Kim had to disarm quickly or face “fire and fury,” Mr. Trump now says there is plenty of time.
But even some of the president’s top national security officials privately concede that Mr. Trump’s declaration in June that “there is no longer a nuclear threat” from North Korea was a huge error, because it was taken as a signal by China and Russia that the crisis was over and that they could resume trading with the country. Current and former intelligence officials say new assessments suggest that Mr. Kim has carefully read Mr. Trump and concluded that as long as the optics are good, and the exchanges between the two leaders are warm, he can hold off demands for progress toward disarmament. If Mr. Kim does not conduct tests, Mr. Trump is unlikely to call out evidence of a continued nuclear buildup.
“I’m shocked at how superficial things have been,” said Jung H. Pak, the C.I.A.’s mission leader for North Korea until she left last year for the Brookings Institution. “I think the North Koreans smell dysfunction and they see dysfunction in the president’s tweets and his compliments and his willingness to meet again.”
.....
Mr. Kim’s strategy now appears to be simple: Mimic Pakistan, which conducted a major nuclear test in 1998 and deflected demands for years that it give up its weapons. Pakistan has largely succeeded. It has a substantial arsenal, and when Mr. Pompeo visited Islamabad recently, there was little public discussion of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal.

Theory is - pardon may or may not come as DT is unreliable, and mid-term results may shackled him with congressional investigations in the aftermath, and DT is always free to make his own deal/choices and throw Manafort under the bus. Plus non-pardonable state level charges are still a possibility. Weighing all odds, Manafort chose Mueller, is what is being speculated.

Their definition of racialized economics is this: “the belief that undeserving groups are getting ahead while your group is left behind.” They say Trump played on these concerns throughout his campaign and has done so as president. They say “racialized economics” was more significant than economic anxiety in affecting how whites with different levels of education voted.
and
They question other theories: They doubt, for example, that Russian interference determined the outcome of the election. The release of hacked emails in July and October 2016 “did not clearly affect” Clinton’s favorable ratings nor perceptions of her honesty, they write. They also say that, given the billions of tweets and social media postings during the campaign, Russian content was probably only an infinitesimal share of the total. Claims that the Russians turned the election should be greeted “with something between agnosticism and skepticism — and probably leaning toward skepticism,” they say.

Stone knows it, he said as much when Cohen flipped. Stone, Manafort and Black (I think) founded the lobbying industry and the PAC system. they have always been open about buying influence in washington. manafort is speaking to camera in the stone documentary talking about how they picked trump to run... stone is far more brazen though, he doesn't care, he wants to be the prince of darkness. there is some fascinating footage of stone at the back of a trump rally, watching proceedings and smiling as the base gets riled up. neither of them have any real loyalty to anyone, let alone trump - who they view very much as a stooge to attract the donations of the republican wealthy - which passes to them

True, the authorizing legislation did pass during the feverishly Interventionista regime of Clinton, high on meddling in Yugoslavia, East Timor and everywhere else.

The USCIRF was constituted in 1999. Their first report https://www.uscirf.gov/reports-briefs/a ... ual-report came out in 2000, Clinton's last year in office. It did not mention India at all (it focused exclusively on Russia, China, and Sudan as countries of concern).

It was during the Republican regime of George W. Bush that the USCIRF fully embraced its Evangelical Christian brief with regards to India and began the bashing of "Hindu Nationalism"... see the May 2001 Annual Report. https://www.uscirf.gov/sites/default/fi ... annRpt.pdf

USCIRF commissioner Nina Shea, an Evangelical activist, made the bashing of India her pet project from this point onward.

History of the US of A
Tulsa Race Riot of 1921. During the riot, white residents destroyed the prosperous black neighborhood of Greenwood, which had come to be known as “Black Wall Street.” A report by the Oklahoma Commission to Study the Tulsa Race Riot said, “It is estimated that approximately 11,000 blacks resided in Tulsa in 1921, most living in the area of the Greenwood section.” As many as 300 people were killed and 8,000 left homeless.

As The New York Times wrote in 2011 on the 90th anniversary, the Tulsa riot “may be the deadliest occurrence of racial violence in United States history.” And yet, as the Tulsa Historical Society and Museum points out, not one act of violence that occurred that day “was then or ever has been prosecuted or punished by government at any level: municipal, county, state, or federal.”

Until the Mueller investigation concludes, Trump will pardon no one as it can be seen as obstruction of justice. Mueller was hired by Rod Rosenstein after Jeff Sessions recused himself. This was May 2017. The question is, when will this investigation conclude and when will the Justice Dept. be informed that elections were interfered with? In the mean time gather up whomever you can and arrest them. Just like the botched Anthrax investigation which ruined the lives of US scientists.

Mueller is the same clown who poo pooed Home Minister Advani when he was visiting India while the US cultural center in Kolkata was attacked in 2002. Saying it was not Islamic militants when in fact HUJI terrorist members were later arrested. He contradicted the Home Ministry.

other commentators have said that the FISA application was specific to Russian actors and any US person who was incidentally involved, i.e. if a US person happened to be talking to the Russian actor under surveillance then they could also be taped. not the other way round. this has been talked about for over a year now

China Once Looked Tough on Trade. Now Its Options Are Dwindling.
By Keith Bradsher, Sept. 18, 2018
BEIJING — President Trump imposed tariffs in July on $34 billion in Chinese goods. China matched them dollar for dollar with its own.
Then he hit an additional $16 billion in goods in August. China matched that, too. Now, Mr. Trump has made his biggest move yet, announcing 10 percent tariffs starting in a week on $200 billion a year of Chinese goods. But this time, China can’t match them all — and that crystallizes a growing problem for Beijing. China’s tit-for-tat responses have so far failed to thwart Mr. Trump’s trade offensive, and with the White House amping up the fight again, Chinese leaders aren’t sure how to respond, people briefed on economic policymaking discussions say.
Chinese officials “are generally confused,” said Raúl Hinojosa-Ojeda, a trade specialist at the University of California, Los Angeles, who has been traveling around China speaking with officials, businesspeople and workers.
They don’t know what to do,” he added. “They worry that the tit-for-tat model is playing into Trump’s hands.”
China doesn’t import nearly enough from the United States to target $200 billion in American goods. But China’s leaders feel they can’t back down. They have presented the trade war as part of a broader effort by the United States to contain China’s rise. The Chinese public could see any effort to soothe tensions as capitulation.
Some hard-liners want a more aggressive stance. Lou Jiwei, who retired as finance minister in 2016 but is still the head of the country’s social security fund, suggested on Sunday that China could deliberately disrupt American companies’ supply chains by halting the export of crucial components mostly made in China. But Chinese trade experts dismiss that idea as impractical and not the government’s position.
For now, China is punting. It has said it would add tariffs on $60 billion in American goods, which would account for nearly everything it buys from the United States. It is still considering its options after that.

Manafort sort of agreed to not seek pardon anyways

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/09/ ... ump-827898
The 17-page deal doesn’t explicitly prohibit Manafort from seeking a pardon, but some lawyers said it appears to extract a promise from Manafort not to seek another form of executive clemency that could relieve him of the obligation to turn over property worth tens of millions of dollars to the government as part of the plea bargain. The agreement also says prosecutors can come after the five identified homes or apartments, three bank accounts and a life insurance policy now or at any point in the future "without regard to the status of his criminal conviction."

Another part of the deal says that if Manafort’s guilty pleas or convictions are wiped out for any reason, prosecutors immediately have the right to charge him with any other crimes he may have committed previously or confessed to during recent plea negotiations.
So the stuff he says during his co-operation under the clause of immunity, that goes away on a pardon and he can get charged for those things as well - possibly state-level charges that he confesses to.

where is the question of pardoning Manafort after the investigation concludes???

added later - this appears to be a ploy to disallow a recording of Nunes and Page discussing the quid pro quo with the Russian offer since FISA does not allow for US persons to be wiretapped. however, US persons may be incidentally wiretapped if they are talking to the subject of the FISA warrant - who is foreign

if the release goes ahead (and it seems to be) it may well count as additional obstruction

The Collapse of the American Empire?

Talk with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges, who over the past decade and a half has made his name as a columnist, activist and author. He's been a vociferous public critic of presidents on both sides of the American political spectrum, and his latest book, 'America, the Farewell Tour,' is nothing short of a full-throated throttling of the political, social, and cultural state of his country.

Trump and/or his officers must have seen those reports. If there are risk issues with agents they will know that it will backfire on him and form a legitimate case for his impeachment. In that case he will not go forward with such a move.

Consider the other scenario. What if there was no legitimate case, which Trump found and decided to show the public, and people who did are trying to cover that up by claiming security reasons?

the other scenario has been debated in the public domain for months - a FISA court can only work with a series of checks and balances and approvals at multiple levels. so when the warrant is granted it has been quite carefully vetted by internal counsel and a federal judge. the application will layout the foreign entity that is to be wiretapped, why, on what grounds, under which laws and by what methods - the latter being operationally sensitive. the defence being deployed has also been publically debated for months - the tactic being used is to sway public opinion using bluster to cover complex legal arguments. the disclosure will be used to say 'look they illegally snooped on Americans' - when the reality is that incidental collection of evidence of americans talking to foreign suspects under surveillance is within the law

what is underway here is complicated. therefore mango joe doesn't understand, which is why it is easy for rudi-g to shout loudly on fox news and direct the opinion in a given direction

I can see Devin Nunes leading the charge on this one.

The US house will begin impeachment proceedings by Feb. 2019 when it shifts to the Democrats. It is the US Senate which has a trial. However even Democrats in the senate will be reluctant to impeach as every senator considers themselves as a potential president.

Oh! SCOTUS is gonna be the Best Little (White)***** house In DupliCity!!
Yale provided Kavanaugh with many of the judge’s clerks over the years, and Chua played an outsized role in vetting the clerks who worked for him. But the process made some students deeply uncomfortable.
One source said that in at least one case, a law student was so put off by Chua’s advice about how she needed to look, and its implications, that she decided not to pursue a clerkship with Kavanaugh, a powerful member of the judiciary who had a formal role in vetting clerks who served in the US supreme court.
In one case, Jed Rubenfeld, also an influential professor at Yale and who is married to Chua, told a prospective clerk that Kavanaugh liked a certain “look”.
“He told me, ‘You should know that Judge Kavanaugh hires women with a certain look,’” one woman told the Guardian. “He did not say what the look was and I did not ask.”
Chua advised the same student Rubenfeld spoke to that she ought to dress in an “outgoing” way for her interview with Kavanaugh, and that the student should send Chua pictures of herself in different outfits before going to interview. The student did not send the photos. The conversation then turned to Kozinski’s protege and good friend Kavanaugh, who one source said was a familiar name even though he had not yet been nominated to the high court. Chua allegedly told the students that it was “no accident” that Kavanaugh’s female clerks “looked like models”. Student reacted with surprise, and quickly pointed out that Chua’s own daughter was due to clerk for Kavanaugh.

A source said that Chua quickly responded, saying that her own daughter would not put up with any inappropriate behaviour.

Chua has cancelled her classes at Yale this semester and, according to her office, has been hospitalised and is not taking calls. Rubenfeld sent an email to the Yale Law School community that said his wife had been ill and in hospital and had a long period of recuperation ahead of her.
The Guardian has learned that Rubenfeld is currently the subject of an internal investigation at Yale. The investigation is focused on Rubenfeld’s conduct, particularly with female law students. Students have also raised related concerns to Yale authorities about Chua’s powerful influence in the clerkships process. The investigation was initiated before Kavanaugh was nominated by Donald Trump to serve on the high court.
Rubenfeld said in a statement to the Guardian: “In June, Yale University informed me that it would conduct what it terms an ‘informal review’ of certain allegations, but that to preserve anonymity, I was not entitled to know any specifics. As a result, I do not know what I am alleged to have said or done. I was further advised that the allegations were not of the kind that would jeopardize my position as a long-tenured member of the faculty.

“For some years, I have contended with personal attacks and false allegations in reaction to my writing on difficult and controversial but important topics in the law. I have reason to suspect I am now facing more of the same. While I believe strongly that universities must conduct appropriate reviews of any allegations of misconduct, I am also deeply concerned about the intensifying challenges to the most basic values of due process and free, respectful academic expression and exchange at Yale and around the country.
“Nevertheless, I stand ready to engage with this process in the hope that it can be expeditiously concluded.”
In a statement, Yale Law School said it could not confirm or deny the existence of an internal investigation.
A Yale Law School official said in an emailed statement: “This is the first we have heard claims that Professor Chua coached students to look ‘like models’. We will look into these claims promptly, taking into account the fact that Professor Chua is currently unreachable due to serious illness. If true, this advice is clearly unacceptable.”
The official added: “I can assure you that we take allegations of faculty misconduct very seriously.”
Chua and her husband are towering figures at Yale and were described by one student as being the centre of gravity at the elite law school, connecting students to jobs and clerkships, and rewarding loyalty.
The couple wrote a controversial book together in 2014 called The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America. It said that a mix of feeling superior with some insecurity were two traits that led to success. It also emphasised the need for “impulse control”.
The couple have hired a well-known crisis communications expert but he did not respond to specific questions from the Guardian about Chua’s remarks or the internal investigation.
In an emailed statement, Chua told the Guardian: “For the more than 10 years I’ve known him, Judge Kavanaugh’s first and only litmus test in hiring has been excellence. He hires only the most qualified clerks, and they have been diverse as well as exceptionally talented and capable.
“There is good reason so many of them have gone on to supreme court clerkships; he only hires those who are extraordinarily qualified. As I wrote in the Wall Street Journal, he has also been an exceptional mentor to his female clerks and a champion of their careers. Among my proudest moments as a parent was the day I learned our daughter would join those ranks.”
The ***** House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Guardian was assisted in its reporting by Elie Mystal, the executive editor of the Above the Law blog. If you have tips on this story please contact the reporter Stephanie.Kirchgaessner@theguardian.com

Most of the media reports are rubbish. Unless there is clear evidence about this Judge we need not believe anything. Most of the reports suggest there is no problem as far as his qualifications to the post concerned. The responsibility rests on the people accusing someone of some serious offence etc. Let this lady come out and testify under oath in the Senate on Monday and see what happens. If she does not come then the process may go on.

This isn’t about the judge himself. If the accusations were serious he would have not become an appeals court judge over a decade ago. This is about power politics. Keeping this man out ensures the SCOUTUS remans divides 4-4. So what you ask? In February 2019, Trump will be subpoenaed by the US House. He will refuse citing executive privilege and a divided SCOUTUS will make a judgement that he must testify. The steps for impeachment will proceed rapidly. A democratic election will have been overturned.

It will demonstrate the US is nothing more than a sham democracy. The US will further have no standing to criticize other countries, especially democratic countries like India.

The president doesn’t want a war. He just wants to show he can cut a better deal than Obama

Most of the reports suggest there is no problem as far as his qualifications to the post concerned. The responsibility rests on the people accusing someone of some serious offence etc. Let this lady come out and testify under oath in the Senate on Monday and see what happens. If she does not come then the process may go on.
Most of the documents covering most of Kavanaugh’s career as part of Republican administrations have not been released to the Democrats in the Senate Judiciary committee. Some small fraction but a large number were released a day before the hearings started. So, yes, this is a sham democracy.

And why not? Iran is the actual gateway into Central Asia. Oil and gas becomes cheaper for India and the rest of the world.

My gut feeling says that Senate will confirm this judge. There may not be much evidence to make a strong case of attempted rape. Had they been one they would have come out with that evidence by now. It will be a political fight in which GOP senators will be forced to vote for their candidate. DT played this card well. The Judge is from Bush camp person and may be close to permanent class. His loss will make Bush camp further weak. They will also put their power behind him.

This will be a serious loss to the metoo gangs and there will be a reality check for them.

The metoo gangs and the Democratic Party of the US are nothing more than urban naxals.
