Good news. Yameen is lost as per the reports. If he accepts the results is another question.

A good beginning has been made. Lets watch the follow-up.

If NOW the mandate was to be subverted for any reason it *should* invite a *direct and overt* intervention from India. Keep the danda ready.

Maldives government acknowledges opposition victory
"Candidate of the Maldivian Democratic Party... Honourable Solih, won the election, having received 134,616 votes," the foreign ministry said after India and Sri Lanka welcomed Solih's victory in Sunday's poll.

Yameen has yet to comment personally. Before the vote his main political rivals were either in prison or in exile and critics say he has muzzled the media.

Results from the electoral commission showed Solih, the joint compromise candidate of the weakened opposition, as the clear winner with 58.33 percent of the vote ahead of 41.7 percent for Yameen.

State media, which before the election gave very little coverage to the opposition, also showed Solih declaring himself the winner.

The US State Department on Monday called on Yameen to "respect the will of the people".

Regional superpower India, competing with China to retain its influence in the region, was the first to "heartily congratulate" Solih.

"This election marks not only the triumph of democratic forces in the Maldives, but also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law," the foreign ministry said.

"In keeping with our 'Neighbourhood First' Policy, India looks forward to working closely with the Maldives in further deepening our partnership."

Maldives president concedes election defeat
COLOMBO: Maldives President Abdulla Yameen Monday conceded defeat in elections and said he would arrange a smooth transition for president-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

"I have accepted the results from yesterday," Yameen said in a televised address to the nation after Sunday's election gave the joint opposition candidate 58.3 per cent of the vote.

"I accept the defeat," Yameen said. "I will enable a smooth transition."

The election in Srilanka and Maldives gives a lesson to our neighborhood leaders that using the China card to show "bravery" against us has it's limit. We have ways to facilitate their downfall, which is not overt.

The commies in Nepal will be watching..

And it is a also a lesson to our chattering editorials, who went to town about failure of GoI.

GoI kept quite and let the Maldives president mess it up. For every anti-India hero in our neighbourhood, he/she gets 5 years, where things can either ways. So we need to hold our horses.

Like Rajapakse, Yameen got overconfident and underestimated his unpopularity. The key Q now is to work with the new rregime to send the Chins back to Beijing.Unfortunately in SL, we dropped the ball and the village bumpkin who became pres. let the Rajapakse clan off the hook and never brought them to book despite their being so many scams and misdemeanours to punish them which the people wanted.

The tadpole tyrant in Male must not be allowed to do a " Rajapakse", Rajapakse now struts around in Delhi hoping his son will get " blessings" from the PM and we will root for whichever clan member stands for pres. at the next hustings. The big difference between the Maldives and Lanka is that in Lanka it is a coalition of opposites, that have come to power, whereas in Male the election was more straightforward.

What we will nos see is a Chin attempt to dig in even more strategically in SL now that their bum- chum in
Male has been routed and rogered .The GOI must not lose a moment to consolidate its ties with the new dispensation and support it to the hilt so that it can bounce the Chins back to their own backyard from ours.

More good news from Male :

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/wor ... 939680.cms
Positive news for India started to trickle in hours after Yameen conceded defeat with former president Mohamed Nasheed defeat with former president Mohamed Nasheed declaring, in an an interaction with TOI, that Indian military choppers, which Yameen wanted to remove from the archipelago, must stay put in the Maldives

Equally significantly, Nasheed said the new government will audit all infrastructure projects in the archipelago in light of the alleged "land grab" by the Chinese under Yameen. He said ostentatious infra projects comprising "concrete and and steel had failed to catch the imagination of the people"

Apart from the audit of projects, Nasheed said the new goverernment will also look into how much money had come into the Maldives in the recent past.
"I am optimistic that China will understand Maldives’ reason for doing it given what has happened recently in countries like Sri Lanka and Malaysia," said Nasheed, as he thanked Inndia for its support to the joint opposition.

New Maldivian Govt To ‘Reassess Chinese Projects’
The new Maldivian government will work closely with India to ensure the security of the Indian Ocean sea-links, said Ahmed Naseem, former Maldivian Foreign Minister in a video call with Strategic News International. Naseem, who is currently in Colombo with other opposition leaders including former President Mohammad Nasheed, said the new government would reassess the cost and implications of Chinese projects in the island nation. He said he did not anticipate any attempt by defeated president Abdulla Yameen to subvert the election result.

India Maldives’ closest ally, new President tells Narendra Modi
n an interview to a local television channel on Tuesday, Solih said Modi had called to congratulate him on his victory Monday and invited him to visit India soon. The PM also referred to the slump in bilateral relations and urged him to help fix it, Solih said. “I told him that India is always the closest ally to the Maldives, and guaranteed that it will remain that way.”Solih said when he stressed the importance of India’s assistance in helping develop the Maldives, Modi had pledged full cooperation.Delhi-Male relations had nose-dived after Yameen refused to accept a Supreme Court ruling in February ordering the release of nine senior political prisoners. Instead, he declared Emergency and jailed several judges and opposition politicians. Yameen’s decision to allow massive Chinese investments in the Maldives also sparked concerns in India’s strategic circles.China on Monday hailed the election verdict, but also hoped the new government would stick to the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) signed by Yameen and “maintain consistency and stability of their policy and create an enabling environment and atmosphere for the Chinese operation there”.The controversial FTA, which is yet to come into effect, was rushed through the country’s Parliament without debate last year.

Maldives opposition: President attempting to stay in power
The Maldives' opposition alliance says President Yameen Abdul Gayoom is working on ways to remain in
power despite having conceded defeat in the presidential election + earlier this week.

Joint opposition spokesman Ahmed Mahloof said on Wednesday that government officials say Yameen is planning to
complain to the Maldives Election Commission about how the vote was conducted and try to pressure it to delay
releasing the final results, due Sunday. Mahloof said Yameen is also trying to get police officers loyal to him to prepare
intelligence reports saying the election was flawed.

India notches a win over China as tropical island changes leadership
Solih’s party is on track to reinstate freedom of expression, implement judicial reforms and clamp down on corruption, Alyssa Ayres, a senior South Asia fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, said in a note.As his pro-democracy government is more politically aligned with New Delhi, Solih will likely repair ties with India and “veer back to the more traditional close regional partnership,” Ayres stated.India welcomed Sunday’s election result.“This election marks not only the triumph of democratic forces in the Maldives, but also reflects the firm commitment to the values of democracy and the rule of law,” the country’s Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.Still, Solih has made clear that his country won’t be subject to the whims of foreign powers. When Indian parliamentarian Subramanian Swamy tweeted in August about India staging a military intervention if Sunday’s election was rigged, Solih objected to the the rhetoric and insisted his country’s sovereignty was “paramount.”

Chinese state media changes tune on India, Maldives
China’s Global Times, which has for months been goading India about regional dynamics, softened its stance Tuesday by saying the two powers could work together in the Maldives. The Beijing-based tabloid, which has been said to reflect what party leaders think but cannot say, has criticised New Delhi for its zero-sum mentality, warned it against military intervention in the Maldives and told it to stop provoking the upmarket holiday destination.President Abdulla Yameen lost last Sunday’s election by more than 38,000 votes. He was widely seen as being China’s preferred candidate for having courted loans and investment in excess of a billion dollars, with his closeness to China coinciding with worsening India ties. The Global Times said Beijing had come up with a constructive “two-plus-one” mechanism – China and India plus another South Asian country – as a demonstration of sincerity.“The mechanism can not only enhance mutual trust between China and India, but prevent other South Asian countries from being caught in between,” said an editorial under the name of Long Xingchun.“This aims to harmonize relations between countries and serves the interest of all relevant parties, and is worth a careful consideration by New Delhi. Perhaps the two powers can have a try in the Maldives first.”
It is not clear what this mechanism is, if it exists or has been formalised in any way by China.A foreign ministry spokesman said earlier this week that China respected the choice made by people in the Maldives, in response to a question about expectations for the future development of ties between the two countries. The Global Times said Yameen’s defeat had little to do with China and everything to do with his trampling of human rights, a crackdown on the opposition and the undermining of democracy and rule of law.“For instance, with opposition leaders and judges arrested by the Yameen government, the opposition party got united amid public concerns about damage to democracy and the rule of law. Foreign policy on China and India did not take center stage during the election. Neither did Solih and the opposition make any remarks hostile to China during the campaign.”
China had no intention and no need to shut out India from the Maldives, said the article.“In the meantime, the Maldives may lend priority to India in its foreign relations, but won’t constrain itself to India. Their disagreement is a bilateral issue that has nothing to do with China.”

China can take this so-called 2+1 mechanism and shove it. Just because we showed them who's the boss, they are trying to play nice by couching some patronizing shite in some very polite sounding words. Nothing stops the incoming govt from defaulting on their Chinese loans, and the Chinese know it, so they are trying to cover their bases.

I don't understand the reporters telling us it was a surprise victory. Was Abullah so popular that no one expected his defeat?

He jailed the entire opposition. Common sense tells me he was digging a hole and will loose the election.

Which is why I had no doubt that physical intervention was not required. If he was popular, he would have won the election, so there is no question of us interfering in a nation's legitimate political process. If he was not popular, he would loose. So for all the scenario, none of them required sending in the paras.

It was a surprise just like the last Lankan presidential election as the voters kept their " bullets" for the two despots well hidden. With the opposition in jail and a heavy-handed attitude by those in uniform on the street, people kept silent., waiting for their revenge.

Now that he has lost, ye tadpole has to hand over power and there are suspicions that he may use the militarily to
usurp power .It's why the international community has been approached by the Maldivian opposition for the release of their leaders and handing over of power.India must have its mil. assets on standby to preserve democracy in the Maldives if the Chinese and Paki p*mp tries more tricks to escape justice.

He may also be trying to find a way of escaping from the island using a Chin or Paki sub.

If the reports about IN and US warships on standby in case the despot tried to undermine the election through violence, it indicates that we were determined to act positively after giving so much rope to the regime which failed to clean up its act and allow a genuine democracy to flourish and played a very dangerous game by inviting the Chins to settle down in this v.strategic area of the IOR.

How does it matter??

Just let them default on the loan and take it from there.

Who will enforce the loan repayment?? The hans??, the pakis?? and from whom exactly in the new govt will they grab an island or two or three as collateral??

Both India and the US have clearly shown their hand and US & IN warships are close by and will remain in the vicinity until the transfer of power takes place. The new govt should try the creep immediately and hang him publicly, using piano wire to form the noose.

Is it any wonder that the hans are now asking India to join up with them to "benefit" the maldives?? ( with the added incentive of a third asian country which looks like the pakis, to play role of the disinterested and impartial third party in the mix??)

The hans are increasingly running into a series of black swans, US trade war, trump,
indonesia, maldives, and black swan eggs may be hatching in the near to medium term in srilanka and nepal.

trump's masterstroke of the threat of withholding IMF funding to chinese debt trapped countries has buggered the hans and left their projects in a possible limbo with the affected countries only now coming to terms of the serious repercussions of IMF refusing them funds.

Did the slit-eyed " yellow peril" ( pardon ye colonial connotations) Chins invite India to work with them in the Maldives when they began their atoll squatting, India ousting from contracts, etc. and conspire with our other mortal enemy, Pak to turn the Maldives into their vassal entity?
India should assist Male in giving the Chins the Asian equiv. of the " bum's rush", cattle class as the first act of the new regime and publicly tear up the debt with the dragon , saying that the loans it received were mischievously obtained, utterly corrupt and aimed at enslaving the nation.
