To maintain pilot proficiency

Typically if pilots flew the full complement of hours required to maintain proficiency, we would quickly exhaust airframe and engine TTL of Sukhois and Jaguars. Hence pilots occasionally fly micro lights.

The Indian Navy operates a large number of offshore patrol vessels for the same reason.

China does it better by manufacturing lots of less capable but useful J-10s and Su-27 copies.

Their larger economy also permits them to use those much costlier (compared to microlights) jets.

Is it true that Sukhoi, Mirage and Jaguar pilots would also fly MiG-21s as well to achieve the same result you described above?

Sukhoi squadrons initially also flew MiG-21 for the same reason. Mirage 2000 and Jaguar have good serviceability rates, so they didn't. Now with depleting airframes across all classes of aircraft, microlights are flown. Also helps the pilots earn flying bonus that is an important part of a pilot's salary

http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Galle ... 0.jpg.html

Check out the above photo. No 20 Sq inducted Su-30MKI in 2002 but also flew MiG-21 Bison 2004-5 for this very reason.

Even US is facing the same problem with F-22 pilots also flying F-16. With F-16 retiring, they want to use the Light Attack for "seasoning" pilots

https://twitter.com/majorgauravarya/sta ... 2332277761 ---> Since 1947, over 1000 IAF aircraft have been lost in “accidents & losses”. More than 80% of these losses are “non-battle” losses. I don’t know how many pilots have lost lives. MiG aircraft are called “flying coffins”. No one cares. Soldiers don’t matter. They are expendable.

The screen shot is from Bharat Rakshak only. Database updated till 2015.

http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Datab ... isting.php

Here is list by Aircrafts
http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Datab ... tcount.php

210 accidents of MiG21 listed. All Mig Accidents: 210 + 37 + 4 + 42 + 15 = 308

From another news Item from 2012.
The Rajya Sabha was informed that over the past 40 years, India had lost more than half of its MiG combat fleet of 872 aircraft. The minister disclosed that "482 MiG aircraft accidents took place till April 19, 2012".
The BR database lists 9 M2K losses..!! I was under impression we have lost only 3-4 till date. And 46 Jaguar losses.

But frankly, such loss numbers are there is history of every AF. I am reading a book on John Boyd. The trainee pilot losses on single Fighter Base, Nellis AFB used to be as high as 70 in single year during Korea War. On an avg one crash per week was the norm the book says. I am sure that had nothing to do with bad quality airplanes or ignorance for pilot lives. This matter needs more nuanced analysis than outrage or hyperventilation if the problem is to be solved.

Sir ji your last line is the key to understanding this very important topic in military aviation. I am currently reading through the f104s tenure with the Luftwaffe and its beyond belief to say the least!

We also would need to properly understand the tempo of training opa conducted with hours of flying etc as well as nature of ops. Not to mention that data needs to be overplayed with numerous other considerations such as type of aircraft, locations and many other factors....just my 2 naiya paisa worth.

What exactly does this statistic help prove? It only exposes the ignorance of whoever asked the question in RS. IAF operated five different types of "MiGs" over several decades. Some like the Mig-21 had several different subtypes with different engines and avionics. This is like somebody in US government asking what is the crash rate of the USAF Lockheed Martin fleet or MD fleet over the last several decades.

Might as well ask combined crash rate of "Dassault" fleet over last 50 years and add up crashes of Ouragans, Mysteres and M2k's together. I'm sure the M2k will become the flying coffin next.

I think there's more to this crash thing, here's my CT
1. self flagellation
2. opportunities for more western imported stuff (read money for corrupt stakeholders)
3. lifafas in different forms to be received by journos. That's why these things get highlighted.
Of course no one talks about the details, but it is more surprising that very few talked about even a comparison with any other AF, be it US.

On a related not a story to tell. I had a colleague whose brother ejected out of a crashing Mig 23 in my pre BRF days. Once i ranted like most guys about IAF and she bluntly asked me to 1. shut up at that time, 2. research 3. and then speak about it. Such is the pride among these folks. My humiliation from that simple and usually calm lady led me to BRF. Before that I only used to read the news headings and the BRF monitor that would figure in the google search. Her brother now flies transport aircraft, much against his dream of flying fighter jet.

I googled the name of the Jaguar pilot. Full name is Wing Commander Rohit Katoch. Below is a link of a video of the pilot, after the crash. His service record on BR's IAF website does not list much ---> http://www.bharat-rakshak.com/IAF/Database/27218

https://twitter.com/ajitkdubey/status/1 ... 7462372357 --> Every time a crash happens, villagers rush to help the pilots. Same help was provided to Wing Commander Katoch when his Jaguar crashed in Kushinagar due to technical defect. Jai Hind, Jai Hind Ki Sena and Jai Hind ke Log!

It was a Mirage 2000 trainer.

https://twitter.com/followmkp/status/10 ... 3836987392 ---> Mirage 2000 while take off, developed a technical snag and couldn't take off and hit the wall near LCA gate at Yemalur. Pilots injured and taken to hospital for further treatment. Sqn Ldr Negi and Sqn Ldr Abrol evacuated to hospital with injuries.

Apparently one of the pilots landed on the wreckage after ejection.

Also, general note for posters, please don't mimic the toxic world of Facebook and Twitter and start blaming HAL for the crash. We don't know what happened. Videos of the crash site show a lot of kites circling around though.
