China on Wednesday slammed remarks by former Maldivian President, Mohamed Nasheed, who has called for a review of all agreements that Male had inked with Beijing.

“Whether the cooperation between China and Maldives can work out or bring benefits to the two countries is all up to what the two peoples say. It cannot be smeared by certain individuals,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang asserted
in response to a question. The Foreign Ministry bluntly warned that Beijing “will oppose… if certain people try to harm China’s interests”, while promising that China “shall continue cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual benefit, abide by the market rules, laws and regulations”.

On Tuesday, China signalled its expectation that the newly elected government in Maldives will continue to back the Beijing-led Belt and Road Initiative as well as the Free Trade Agreement reached with the outgoing administration of Abdulla Yameen.
That FTA was a sham and must be scrapped forthwith by the new government.
I think that the noose already measured for Abdulla Yameen's neck is indeed looming larger now.

Are there any trees in male or will it be just a lamp post??

Can't stop a guy's wishful thinking now, can you??

Nasheed is the guy in exile in India. Why would he be meeting the noose?

it does warrant a new thread to discuss. It has huge implications for not only US but rest of the world too.
On the other hand it explains some pretty serious stuff like how they stole F-35 designs and come up with DSI on their own, why US has been so gung-ho about China only for the last 4-5 years.
Maybe a thread where we can discuss on cross dimensional aspects of these kind of behavior and how to avoid these in India.

Between uncle and china, if anyone who has bugged the entire digital world the most is not china. Not saying that chinese are saints. There is a reason why major microprocessor, chip makers, and software operating system makers are firmly under uncle's tight control. Looks like we are okay being bugged by uncle, but getting bugged by chinese is offensive. The day chinese or other nation figures out how to make an consumer/business electronic (computer or handheld) that runs on their own chips and software, and god forbid export it to other countries, uncle knows that the game is over.

Part of the Trade war is a result of the uber priority desire of uncle to build such a massive moat around its digital dominance that by crippling chinese economy and pushing them back by several decades to ensure they don't come close to challenging digital dominance. For the topic of this thread, India can use this news to its advantage to promote its manufacturing and digital independence at home.

And why should that be surprising? We have a positive balance of trade with Unkil, we have not fought a war with them (despite USS Enterprise incursion into BoB), we are not arming to fight a war with them, they are not infringing into our territory, by and large there is a free flow of ideas and people across our nations (visa restrictions and financial constraints notwithstanding). Maybe Unkil will keep us from ultimate glory, but our economy needs to multiply by a factor of 5x before we reach a stage where we compete with them, so we are happy to grow in Unkil's shadow till then.

Cheen looks nothing like 1945 Japan which was a TFTA warrior nation. Cheen is a short rice-eating nonwarrior nation that is aggressive during peace time but cannot fight.

If it were like Japan then Cheen would be easily dealt with. A military whose last war experience was four decades ago cannot fight period. The danger is Cheen doesn’t fight and continues on the current path of flooding the world with machines from its MIC.

We need to stop this Germany/Japan comparison with Cheen. It is bad for rational thinking and inhibits a proper counter strategy. It means we are always arming ourselves with phoren gear for an imminent war with Cheen because local stuff are too long in the making. This type of thinking weakens our MIC which is the main power on stage in the 99.9999% of the time there is no war.

The Japanese and Germans were warriors. The chinis are no warriors. Their danger is how they use their production and MIC. We need to think and match in this way.

^Agreed, war with china is going to be an economic one. The only way cheen ever fights us militarily is by forcing its dog to attack us. As such, they need to be countered with the same currency.

China pumps $109 billion into economy as trade war bites on growth – PTI

BEIJING: China's central bank said on Sunday that it was cutting the reserve requirement ratios (RRRs) by one per cent from October 15 which will inject a net $109.2 billion in cash into the banking system, amid a deepening trade war with the US that has increased pressure on growth in the world's second-largest economy.

The reserve cut, the fourth by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) this year, came after Beijing pledged to speed up plans to invest billions of dollars in infrastructure projects as the economy shows signs of cooling further.

The PBOC said on Sunday it will cut the RRR for RMB deposits by one percentage point starting from October 15. The cut will enable banks in China to release 1.2 trillion yuan cash for additional lending.

Some of the liquidity unleashed will be used to pay back the 450 billion yuan ($65 billion) of the medium-term lending facility that will mature on October 15, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

In addition, the liquidity of another 750 billion yuan ($110 billion) will be injected into the market for lending, according to the PBOC statement.

The announcement of the relaxing the RRR requirement for the banks, which are also saddled with the huge local government debt of $2.58 trillion comes amid deepening trade war with US and raising of the interest rates by US Federal Reserve, intensifying the pressure on capital outflows.

The huge case outflow from the banks was expected to help the private businesses to access more credit as their products faced an uncertain prospect in the US, which is China's second largest market after the European Union.

US President Donald Trump kicked off the trade war in June byslapping additional tariffs on billions of dollars Chinese exports, piling up pressure on China to reduce over $335 billion trade deficit in the $710.4 billion bilateral trade.

The US Federal Reserve move to increase the interest rates also sparked fears of more capital outflows from China.

The injection of cash into the economy will also boost hopes that the negative impact of higher US tariffs on Chinese exports can be eased.

The PBOC's announcement comes at the end of weeklong national day holidays which ends on Sunday.

It also comes ahead of Monday's visit here by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the second of talks with Chinese leaders on trade and security issues.

The RRR cut will fill in the liquidity gap of banks and put no downward pressure on the yuan as the country's monetary policy is not eased, the PBOC statement.

There are sufficient conditions for the RMB exchange rate to remain basically stable at a reasonable and balanced level, it said.

"The PBOC will continue to take necessary measures to stabilize market expectations and keep the foreign exchange market running smoothly," it said.

The RRR cut will cover the yuan deposits of large commercial banks, share-holding commercial banks, city commercial banks, non-county rural commercial banks and foreign banks

China to sell 48 high-end military drones to Pakistan - PTI
China will sell 48 high-end military drones to its "all-weather ally" Pakistan in what a military observer said will be the largest deal of its kind, official media here reported on Tuesday.

The cost of the deal was not revealed.

Wing Loong II, a high-end reconnaissance, strike and multi-role endurance unmanned aircraft system, is manufactured by Chengdu Aircraft Industrial (Group) Company.

The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) will also be jointly manufactured, state-run Global Times reported.

China, an "all-weather ally" of Islamabad, is the largest supplier of weapon system to the Pakistan Army. Both the countries also jointly manufacture JF-Thunder a single engine multi-role combat aircraft.

The announcement by China to permit the sale of high-end military drones comes in the immediate backdrop of India's move to acquire S-400 sophisticated missile defence systems from Russia. The deal was clinched during last week's visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to New Delhi.

The deal for the acquisition of Chinese drones was announced by Pakistan Air Force's Sherdils Aerobatic Team on its official Facebook account on Sunday, the Global Times report said.

It did not reveal the cost of the deal, when it was struck or when the Wing Loong IIs will be delivered, it said.

The air force academy aerobatics team announced that in the future, the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex Kamra and the Aviation Industry Corporation of China's Chengdu Aircraft Industrial (Group) Company will jointly manufacture the drones, the report said.

Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Group did not confirm when the deal was reached.

Wing Loong II made its maiden flight in February last year
, an earlier report by the state-run Xinhua news agency said.

A Xinhua report in December last year said Wing Loong II UAS has already obtained the largest order of Chinese UAVs in the overseas market, even before its maiden flight. But the report did not specify the buyer. {So, now it is revealed that just a province of China has ordered it}

According to the report, the system is composed of the ground station and various number of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Within 10 months of its maiden flight, multiple live firing tests had been conducted in accordance with the requirement of its customers, including stationary targets, moving targets, time sensitive targets and air-ground coordination, the report said.

A deal involving as many as 48 Wing Loong IIs, if confirmed, would be China's largest export deal for drones to date, Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, told the Global Times.

It makes sense the aerobatic team was closely involved with the deal, Song said, noting that the team is expected to train the drone operators.

The deal is trustworthy given the close military ties between the two countries and Pakistan's need for drones, Song said.

US drones like the MQ-1 Predator and MQ-9 Reaper are technologically more advanced, but Washington limits their export, Song said.

Chinese drones will enjoy more success in the international market in the future, he said, as they perform similarly at a lower cost.

"Chinese UAVs like Caihong series also has clients from countries like Iraq and Saudi Arabia," Song added.

They don't have enough manpower to monitor the LOC in light of our cross border raids. They want to use drones instead , armed with ATGMs.

Our drones were monitoring Sep 16 strikes and they did recon as well. These were places beyond LoC

So it is definitely possible. Have seen Khan optics zoom from 10KM height, in those youtube videos. At those heights, you don't have to fly within 10KM of LoC.

Saar ji just my two naya paint worth what you are talking about is conducting medium to high altitude range observation at oblique angles and various slant ranges. For this Khan has the most rfra hyoerspectral, IIR and sar/Isar tools ever built as do the euros and the yehudis to a somewhat lower extent. We no doubt benefit from the yehudi sensor packages and soon Khan guardians. That is not to say the chinese imaging tools are complete do shi$$ but they are certainly at a much lower spectrum. Having said that this does provide imminently useful observation capabilities to the pukes. As chetak saar poignantly noted these will be shredded if they attempt to cross over.

Question: How much credibility do we give this report, given that the primary source is the Facebook page of PAF's acrobatic team? There is no confirmation from the OEM or from the PAF.

Also the Pakis are bhikaris and are roaming around with a begging bowl to the IMF and Saudis. They cant affort expensive MALE drones..

The Chinese are the only ones supplying weapons to Terroristan on credit nowadays. The small export from Russians is on a hard cash basis.

India to make limited gains in the Chinese market despite US-China tariff war: Study - Amiti Sen, Business Line
India may manage to benefit from the on-going tariff war between China and the US by increasing its exports to Beijing, but the rise is likely to be limited to just a handful of items, a Commerce Ministry study has estimated.

Nonetheless, the increased need for both the US and China to have India as a reliable partner in keeping global trade and investment flows open provides India with a new leverage in negotiating the terms of economic engagement with both economies which policy makers should make effective use of, the study titled ‘Sino-India Trade-A Perspective’, advised.

“The study was commissioned by the government to try and understand the reason behind the widening trade deficit with China, which crossed $60 billion, and find ways to bridge the gap. Exploring the opportunities for India flowing from the US-China trade stand-off is an important part of the study,” an official told BusinessLine.

Of the over 600 items on which the Chinese government has imposed higher tariffs for the US, India at present exports just 44 items and there is scope for increasing sales in China of items such as fresh grapes and steel alloy, the study said.

For future engagements, the study proposed easing of non-tariff barriers in items like pharmaceuticals, fruits and meat and harnessing potential in services like IT.

Concerted efforts

“The specific lines in which India can potentially expand exports to China immediately based on its strengths and available market access in China and also those in which concerted efforts need to be made to acquire market access have been shared with the line Ministries/Departments,” the study said.

Although imposition of higher tariffs by China on about 603 items imported from the US in about four tranches presented a possibility to India to increase exports of all these items to Beijing, the actual picture is not quite rosy.

Of all the items on which China has imposed higher duties, America’s exports of about 262 items to the country is negligible while for 149 items US exports to China are less than $10 million for each item. “Increased tariffs in these lines would therefore not result in substantial opportunities for other country exporters,” the report pointed out.

Then there are 17 items, in the list of 603, where US’ exports to China are more than $10 million but India still cannot export to China despite exporting it to other parts of the world due to market-access barriers.

“While trying to find out ways to increase exports of the 44 items where it has an advantage, India could definitely focus on the 17 other items where it has a potential to export but is currently denied market access by China,” the official said.

In case anyone wants a good lulz - India needs China’s help in economic catch-up

In more serious news - Brazil’s big soyabean win turns painful
https://www.ft.com/content/0c608ae6-cbe ... 069bde0956

Gist being - brazillians are scraping the barrels clean exporting soybeans to china after they imposed a 25% duty on american soybeans. So domestic prices have skyrocketed, while prices in chicago/midwest us have fallen. Now they're looking at importing from the us and exporting to the china and think even that roundabout way might be cost effective :rotfl:

This is sort of like how china circumvents our free trade agreements and pushes low cost stuff into India.

Neutering & Defanging Chinese Threat (15-11-2017)

Post by Peregrine »

Largest car market faces historic drop as Chinese shoppers waver

China’s car sales fell for a third straight month as a slowing economy and an intensifying trade dispute with the U.S. spooked consumer demand, adding to evidence that the decades long expansion of the world’s largest market is grinding to a halt.

Purchases of passenger vehicles by dealerships declined 12 percent to 2.06 million units in September, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in a statement on Friday. That leaves the market up just 0.6 percent for the first nine months of the year, and the association said fourth-quarter comparisons from 2017 are challenging. An annual drop would be the first in at least two decades.

A slowdown in China -- where automakers poured in billions of dollars in the past 20 years to bulk up factories -- leaves the industry struggling to find growth anywhere else on the planet. A trade war with the U.S. has already prompted luxury carmakers BMW AG and Daimler AG to warn about lower profits while Chinese consumers staying away from showrooms amid a sputtering economy forced Jaguar Land Rover to shut a factory temporarily.

Cutting Prices

The slump may be the biggest auto manufacturers have ever experienced in China, said Steve Man, a senior cars analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence in Hong Kong. Weaker brands may be hit disproportionately, and such companies will need to cut prices to drum up sales, Man said. Some carmakers may also be forced to shutter factories to reduce inventories and lower costs, he said.

The slowdown comes just as global brands are making a bigger push into China, helped by the government opening up the economy. BMW on Thursday revealed a $4.1 billion deal to secure control of its Chinese joint venture, becoming first automaker to take advantage of China’s policy to let foreign companies own a majority holding of their local partnerships.

The German luxury-car maker is also among Western brands still boosting manufacturing capacity in China and expand local production of models including electric cars. Tesla Inc. is pushing ahead with plans to set up production in China to gain a bigger slice of the world’s largest electric-vehicle market.

General Motors Co., the largest U.S. carmaker, reported a 15 percent drop in China deliveries for the three months ended Sept. 30, its first quarterly report since the trade tensions with the U.S. began escalating in July. Volkswagen AG and Honda Motor Co. also reported declines in deliveries.

Demand has also been hurt by the phasing out of a rebate on purchase tax that was in place through last year. China’s car dealers are now pushing the government to come up with fresh measures to help spur demand, including changes to the way value-added tax is levied on used cars.

Not sure this is the appropriate thread for this or not. But this news has to be ironic on so many level.
Twitter: Chinese Consulate collaborated for Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata
Kolkata: Chinese Consulate has collaborated with Salt Lake's BJ Block Puja Committe to recreate Yunnan (China's province) themed Durga Puja pandal."We're very happy to collaborate with this club.We enjoy & love pandal hopping & this is my 4th year," Ma Zhanwu,Chinese Consulate General
Not sure if it is an attempt to collate soft power like Confucius Institutes, some quid pro quo with Didi or both.
We do have a sizable population of Chinese origin people living in Kolkata and they are likely to be exploited as HumInt like in other countries.
But still, the irony.. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Mike Pompeo and the new ‘Cold War’ - Atul Aneja, The Hindu
It was a day when the gloves were off. The spiralling trade war between China and the U.S. visibly mutated into what appeared to be the beginning of a new Cold War. On October 8, when Beijing was in its mid-autumn prime, Mike Pompeo, the U.S. Secretary of State, wheeled into the Diaoyutai guest house. The stately facility of elegant buildings and vast green spaces is China’s icon for high-browed diplomacy.

Soon after, he was seated opposite Wang Yi, China’s Foreign Minister, who had only months ago been elevated to the additional, and more senior, post of State Councilor. Despite the elegance of the setting, a pleasant exchange between the two top diplomats of the world’s largest and second largest economies was not in the offing. Days before Mr. Pompeo’s arrival, U.S. Vice-President Mike Pence had muddied the waters of Sino-U.S. ties. In a speech at the Hudson Institute, evocative of the McCarthy era in the U.S., Mr. Pence blamed China for most of the ailments that afflicted the U.S. — from its perceptible economic decline to the erosion of its soft power due to alleged subterranean inroads by China. Mr. Pence’s address followed what had riled China most — the imposition of sanctions on one of its companies, which had bought weapons from Russia. The battleships of the two navies also had a close brush with each other in the turbulent waters of the South China Sea, ahead of Mr. Pompeo’s visit.

A frosty exchange between Mr. Wang and his U.S. guest was thus inevitable. But the harshness of the rhetoric, in full public glare, took even veteran watchers of Sino-U.S. fractious diplomacy by surprise. In the testy back-and-forth, Mr. Wang slammed the U.S. for making “a series of moves” on Taiwan, as well as “other issues” that targeted Chinese sovereignty. He was apparently referring to the Taiwan Travel Act, which had opened the gates for high level U.S. visits, followed by last month’s announcement that Washington would sell weapons worth $330 million to Taiwan.

Mutual trust hit

“These actions have affected the mutual trust between both sides, and has cast a shadow over the prospect of China-U.S. relations,” Mr. Wang asserted. In his riposte, Mr. Pompeo, said, “The issues that you characterised, we have fundamental disagreements.”

Though apparently exercising restraint, there is a steady permeation in the Chinese state media of signs that a Cold War with the U.S. is on the doorstep.
Mr. Pence’s speech was the harbinger of a full-spectrum assault on China, minus the use of force — the blaring signpost of an imminent Cold War that could echo the decades of bad blood between the U.S. and the former Soviet Union.

Unsurprisingly, the state broadcaster China Global Television Network (CGTN) nailed an inflection point in the Trump administration’s dealings with China. “This relationship has entered a period of turbulence after the White House and the Department of Defense released the National Security Strategy and National Defense Strategy, respectively, labelling China as a ‘revisionist power’ and ‘strategic competitor’, thus basically setting the administration's tune for its policies toward China,” a commentary on the CGTN website observed. The article warned that in its all-dimensional attack, the U.S. is likely to seek its isolation by using China’s “non-market economy” status. That would be used as a tool to dissuade Washington’s allies from deepening their economic engagement with Beijing.

The hans have always shown a particular interest in Kolkata.

The chinese origin people there are all long settled migrants and are completely Indians in every sense of the term.

It is not very healthy for us to have these godless commies from the chinese consulate to mess around with the Durga Puja pandals.

There are a lot of references/quotes in this article but I fail to understand what you are trying to say, in fact whether you are trying to say anything at all.

The Chinese mission in Kolkata should have been shut down at the time they forced the Indian mission in Lhasa to shut down.

Neutering & Defanging Chinese Threat (15-11-2017)

Post by Peregrine »

Trump green-lights $60 billion answer to China’s OBOR

US President Donald Trump, seeking to counter China’s growing geopolitical influence, is embracing a major expansion of foreign aid that will bankroll infrastructure projects in Africa, Asia and the Americas — throwing his support behind an initiative he once sought to scuttle. With little fanfare, Trump signed a bill a little over a week ago that created a new foreign aid
agency — the US International Development Finance Corp — and gave it authority to provide $60 billion in loans, loan guarantees and insurance to companies willing to do business in developing nations.

The move was a significant reversal for Trump, who has harshly criticised foreign aid from the opening moments of his presidential campaign in 2015. Since becoming president, Trump hs proposed slashing $3 billion in overseas assistance, backed eliminating funding for the Overseas Private Investment Corp and taken steps to gut the US Agency for International Development, the state department agency that dispenses $22.7 billion a year in grants around the world.

The president’s shift has less to do with a sudden embrace of foreign aid than a desire to block Beijing’s plan for economic, technological and political dominance. China has spent
nearly five years bankrolling a plan to gain greater global influence by financing big projects across Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa.

Now, Trump wants to fight fire with fire. “I’ve changed, and I think he’s changed, and it is all about China,” said Republican representative Ted Yoho, who helped sell the plan to other conservative Republicans in the House , which has historically opposed foreign-aid programmes.

The effort is part of a sweeping attempt by the Trump administration to prevent China’s
economic and political dominance. Trump has already imposed tariffs on $250 billion in
Chinese goods as punishment for Beijing’s trade practices, which he says put US companies at a disadvantage. Last week, his administration detailed a plan to use expanded powers to crack down on foreign investment in the US, which was aimed primarily at making it harder for China to gain access to US technology and trade secrets.

And the administration said last week that it would sharply restrict exports of civilian nuclear technology to China. The new bipartisan push to increase foreign aid began under the Obama administration, but it was rebranded as a means of competing with China’s “Belt and Road Initiative”, also known as the One Belt One Road initiative, which has a goal of distributing $1 trillion in construction aid and investments to more than 100 countries.

China’s biggest investments are targeted to countries, like Pakistan and Nigeria, with a goal of expanding Beijing’s geopolitical power and gaining access to natural resources like minerals and oil. But it is also spending billions on projects in smaller countries that are less likely to turn a monetary or political profit. Last month, President said China would provide $60 billion in financial support to Africa, including credit lines, grants and investment financing.

The investments have raised concerns that poor and emerging nations like Djibouti and Sri Lanka could be increasingly beholden to China, which can seize local assets if countries default on loans. The US’ initiative is far less ambitious. But it “allows us, at least, to compete,” said Tom Hart, North America executive director of ONE, the development non-profit that musician Bono helped found. The new agency will supplant the Overseas Private Investment Corp, established in 1971 as a lending facility to encourage US companies to invest in developing countries, and will have twice its overall lending capacity. The new entity, like the old, is funded primarily through fees, and will provide loans, loan guarantees and political-risk insurance to companies willing to take the gamble of investing in developing countries.

Republican senator Bob Corker, chairman of the senate foreign relations committee, said the initiative represented a strategic shift. Trump seems to be learning that the projections of military power alone will not be enough to compete with China, he said. “We’re seeing what China is doing throughout Africa and South America, and people are waking up and realizing we have to have involvement with these countries

China's stock market suffers $3tn rout in last six months

The Shanghai Composite Index, China’s benchmark stock index, is now 50% below its bubble-high in 2015. The world’s second-largest market by valuation has suffered a $3-trillion rout in the last six months since the start of the trade war with the US. In comparison, the Sensex has lost over 10% since its peak on Aug 28 this year, while its m-cap is down about $262 billion (over Rs 19 lakh crore) in the same period.

China reaches out to India for joint projects in South Asia

Dipanjan Roy Chaudhury, Oct 16, 2018

NEW DELHI: China has reached out to India to create joint projects in South Asia similar to Sino-Indian joint projects in Afghanistan.

Speaking at the launch of joint Indo-China project for training Afghan diplomats in New Delhi on Monday, Chinese Ambassador to India Luo Zhaohui suggested that China-India Plus cooperation should be extended from Afghanistan to other countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Iran and Myanmar.

He further said that both sides should join under the mechanism of SAARC, to promote regional peace, stability and prosperity. Sources here indicated that India is not in favour of expansion of SAARC to include China, and BIMSTEC is being strengthened as a sub-regional organisation amid Chinese inroads.

And BCIM, or Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar, has not made much progress. Last week, China reached out to India seeking to join hands amid trade war with the US.
