Given the capabilities of DRDO wrt missile programs, I doubt if there are any technical challenges regards to development of these two missiles. If anything these are low ball for DRDO. The main reason would be " paise khatm ho gaye". Indeed with elections now approaching there would be all sorts of paucity of funds for various projects.

What's happening to Nirbhay, no test in 2018. All sorted? Given the troubled history it had, I would expect multiple tests prior to induction. Although, it is possible that it is not declared to public!

I mentioned it while back that Nirbhay will likely get the ax simply took too long and shift to hypersonic missiles is all the rage now. This should be case study of how not to run a program fault lays with all parties involved ( underfunded, snail pace dev cycle, overambitious, changing design etc).

The subsonic missile concept isn't dead yet. It should get superceded very quickly with a stealthier frame.

Very sad if true but not surprising given that there was zero tests in entire year after it was claimed that the hump was crossed in 2017

This should be the K4 or K5 I presume... any news if it is from a submarine or a platform?

Its a bit facetious to claim that subsonic cruise missiles are dead. Low flying CMs like the Nirbhay are practically undetectable and are very effective against a wide variety of land targets. Not every land target is going to be protected with a S400 type system.

I am also worried about the lack of Nirbhay tests, given that the design issues had been sorted out.

P.S. Hypersonic missiles cannot loiter, which is also one of Nirbhay's USP's

Nirbhay will be tested with the indigenous engine. I presume that this is the cause 9f the delay
Cruise missiles will be useful in the forseeable future

Maybe they are waiting for the Manik engine to mature. The last test was carried out using a Turbojet engine, instead of turbofan. Not sure if any of the turbofan engines procured from Russia for the Nirbhay are still remaining or not. Maybe they want the next test to be the final config Manik engine.

Could also be that they are now looking to change the design to a more stealthy design, like the Russian Kh-101, that evolved from the old Kh-55.
The KH-55 had a drop down engine, whereas the KH-101 has a much more stealthier design with the engine incorporated within the airframe.
Nirbhay too has the engine inside the airframe, no tests this year are puzzling and disapointing.
If the project is capped as a tech demonstrator, it will adversely impact ADE too. It might even be disbanded/merged with ADA or HAL or other labs.

Wouldnt there have been tests with old/imported engines to iron out the software/navigation algos and tons of other checklists given the multiple failures of all those in earlier tests(engine never had a issue in earlier failure to be a showstopper) ?

A smaller version of Nirbhay for air launch from Su30, able to carry 3-4 of them at once, giving 600-800km range would very useful against targets in Tibet.

Glide post firing(like SAAW), then start the engine. In this scenario, the ladakh test makes sense..

As fatr as I can remember they finished using the procured engines from Russia and were planning to use the indigenous engine.

Subsonic CM are not dead but hard to fathom developing one and may be seeing induction at 2025 or 2030 at the current pace as transition to UCAV, hypersonic missiles or stealthy CM are being happening. Addition of features such as loitering is what complicated Nirbhay development cycle rather than keeping it simple and adding those features in next iterations.

It's shame ADE didnt follow Brahmos or even Astra programs and simply focused on getting it out the door and add additional features later in cycle.

As for ADS using S-400 to shoot down cruise missiles is a overkill, Russia primary advertises Panstir for that purpose

Getting a plain vanilla LRCM should be our immediate focus...probably our ability to extend the range of barahmos overtly after MTCR is working against Nirbhay. Rather than aim for the sky.. we should first perfect and induct a Mk1 version and then continue on adding bells and whistles...

Maybe the usual desi chicken and egg problem of user being completely uninterested unless it is a product which is "contemporary" and matches everything out there and scientists biting off more than they can chew to envice user interest

Given that hemant kr rout beat me to writing, posting what i was writing..pardon the formatting as it is copied from MS word and can't paste table...ramana sir, was keen to send this to you..

As the year 2018 comes to a close, one cannot help notice what a busy year India had in testing its missiles, old and new alike. DRDO performed a staggering 29 tests of various missiles and munitions, based on publicly disclosed information. These ranged from MBRL like guided Pinaka Mk2 with range of 70Km to three tests of Agni 5 with a range of at least 5000Kms. While Agni 5’s “officially” stated range of 5000 km keeps everyone guessing, the importance of night trials of missiles should not be missed. We conducted multiple night time tests of Agni 1 and Prithvi 2. Repeated trials of missile systems, including those that have been already inducted potentially provide the following benefits
a. Life Cycle Data: Real world data on component reliability and life cycle planning, and more accurate life cycle planning & estimation
b. Tracking data: Useful for modelling the path under different conditions to minimize the need for future testing
c. Testing New Components: Possibly testing new sub-components on an already proven system thereby de-risking a completely new system or easy to isolate the effects of new components rather than going in for a full system
d. Training: operator training for a wider base, repeated training for same base providing more familiarity in real world situation under different scenarios
e. Identifying failures: Missiles are complex systems and a lot can go wrong. It is always better to fail in a controlled environment and rectify in peacetime rather than in wartime. Just as Pervez Musharraf found out during the Kargil war when he was informed that the successful missile launch he supervised was failure and the missile could not even be found and Pakistani missiles’ guidance systems don’t work as boasted .
f. Strategic Signalling: Indicating to our opponents that the nation is ready for all scenarios and our production capabilities are in robust. Also, this sustained made us forget the days when every green painted missile with the name of an invader made common Indian shiver. Now all we hear from Pakistan is cries of capping Indian missile programs by UN and powers that be. That is the power of persistence and incremental improvement in scientific fields. Pakistan imported missiles and may not even know where the missile will land, even during peaceful tests. India persisted with own technology and now can make missiles are one of most accurate in their own class of missiles. It must be noted that this accuracy makes us do with lesser yield of nuclear weapons thereby minimizing the required yields of weapons.

Few nations in P5 can lay claim to such wide range of missiles and with this level of rigorous testing. This testing enables us to be claim our rightful place on the high table of most powerful nations in the world. It also reminds our enemies to think twice before any conducting any mischief. It is a stern warning to those coveting our land or aiming to destabilize our nation, that India is ready 24*7 for all types of conflicts across all environments in land, sea and air.

When viewed in conjunction with the very high intensity exercises conducted this year, viz., Ex. Gaganshakti, Ex. Crossbow, Ex. Bahubali and other exercises involving almost all the P5 nations within and outside India mark the rapid emergence of India on the world front. It indicates that India will not shy from applying doctrines with intense punitive measures to give more than a bloody nose to its opponents.

It must not be ignored that all this has been accomplished by our DRDO scientists on a shoe string annual budget of ~2Bn USD, with ~30% on the missile programs. Current DRDO budget is roughly 5% of our total defence budget which is 1.65% of our GDP, a petty number when compare. Further, all these accomplishments have been made in light of technology denial regimes that have long stalled our access to critical technology & components, freely sharable across western nations. So special thanks to all DRDO scientists from myself and all other Indians on their behalf. You guys rock! Keep up the great work. Every Indian is proud of your great contribution in defending our motherland.
A lot has been accomplished and quite a lot is still needed, I am eagerly awaiting further tests of Nirbhay, the tests of Shuarya, HSTDV, Rustom 2 are long overdue. Hope 2019 will see successful tests of these missiles and showcase the maturity of Indian missiles.
On the other hand we should ponder why India can is world leader in these complex areas, in spite of all the challenges but hasn’t tasted similar levels of success in areas where imports are permitted.
The role of media should also be highlighted in highlighting these successes. While S-400 deal and controversies around Igla and Rafale purchase captured the attention of print and TV media, few journalists apart from Hemant Rout and Saurav Jha managed to look beyond their political proclivities and some technical stuff beyond the copy paste reports of previous years. While they did the best job in media, they were no match for few posters on Bharat Rakshak Forums (BRF), especially the Indian missiles thread. Haridas, JayS, Indranil and Ramana deserve a special mention for dropping bread crumbs wherever appropriate. Would like them to thank for their making BRF forums a great place to learn and enjoy for over a decade.

Haridasji

Thank you for explanation. Any graphics from you soon, missed seeing them for comparative purposes when discussing missiles and launch platforms.

For a paper I'm writing (for a think tank with the same kind of orientation as BRF) can Missile gurus here help me understand what quantity of the following missiles we should have deployed by the end of 2022. This is in a `best case scenario' assuming no delays in trials/ procurement etc.
Thanks.

SRBMs - Prithvi & Brahmos regiments or approx. no of missiles.
SAM's - Akash, Barak & QRSAM.

This is operational details. No one will be having this kind of info and anyone having the information, should not be disclosing it on public forums.

You can check publically available information about the orders placed for the various missiles and then estimate. Order details for missiles like Prithvi and Land based Brahmos will not be available. For Brahmos you might find the number of regiments raised, same also maybe for Prithvi, but it will not have absolute number of missiles. Also, for Prithvi no info about the version.
