Reko Diq, IPPs, Karkey cases: International court fines Pakistan $4 bn...
The airports of 60 countries will bar the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) planes from landing if Pakistan gets behind with paying over $4 billion fine after losing the famous Reko Diq case to an Australian company for extraction of copper and gold in Balochistan.

The World Bank’s International Court for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has fined Pakistan over $4 billion after losing the case.

It would be cheaper for them to let PIA not fly (it already doesn't, to most key international locations). Of course, defaulting and thumbing their nose at the international system will have consequences beyond just PIA landing rights.

Reko Diq, IPPs, Karkey cases: International court fines Pakistan $4 bn - Top Story - Hanif Khalid - January 2, 2019

ISLAMABAD: The airports of 60 countries will bar the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) planes from landing if Pakistan gets behind with paying over $4 billion fine after losing the famous Reko Diq case to an Australian company for extraction of copper and gold in Balochistan.

The World Bank’s International Court for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has fined Pakistan over $4 billion after losing the case.

The flights of national flag carrier will not be allowed touchdown until payment of the fine in question on time. The same court had also fined Pakistan $1.2 billion after losing the case to the Turkish power generation company Karkey. The fine is yet to be paid to the company.

The company’s ship anchored the Arabian Sea for eight months during the tenure of the then prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf but it was not supplied oil for power generation.

The ICSID has also imposed a fine of $1 billion on Pakistan in the Independent Power Producers (IPPs) case.

A conglomerate of 13 international companies had taken Pakistan to the International Court for Settlement of Investment Disputes that stood trial for several years.

The companies took the stand that they made investments in the country’s power sector on sovereign guarantees and supplied billions of rupees worth of power but no payments were made.

The total fine in these three cases makes a whopping amount of $4 billion, and if the country pays all these fines then the financial assistance received from Saudi Arabia and the UAE would go towards this end dealing a huge blow to the country’s financial reserves!

Interpol again refuses to extradite Haqqani
The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) has refused to act against former Pakistan ambassador to the United States, Husain Haqqani, sources familiar with the case have confirmed.
The government of Pakistan is now considering asking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to approach the US government for Haqqani’s extradition after second refusal by the Interpol.
As a matter of policy, the US govt doesn’t consider extradition in political cases and in the case of Haqqani it’s almost impossible that the US govt will take any action.
Try the ICJ next.

Since these paki pig t*rds can't muster these kinds of funds, can the aggrieved parties ask governments around the world to start confiscating paki embassies, consulates, high commissions and reimburse them of the proceeds?

Thanks for sharing the PDF.

If you check page no. 269 and 270, they have listed breakdown of fine and 12% compound interest rate from 2012. I roughly calculated the amount due as of today and it is around $4b.

Oh, and not to forget they will have to pay additional $22m in legal expense compensation. Page 278.

The real State of Terroristani Forex Reserves are as follows :

Please read the following Article :

09-12-2017 : After debt repayments in coming months, SBP’s own net reserves will be a mere $4.5 billion
Here is the Pertinent Paragraph :
“This is clearly double counting of $5.8 billion. In principle, it should have excluded this sum from the commercial banks’ reserves, said Dr Ashfaque Hasan Khan, former director general of Debt of Ministry of Finance.
21-12-2018 : PAKISTAN'S FUDGED RESERVES - S B P : 07.4573 - COMM BANKS : 06.5605 - TOTAL RESERVES : 14.0178

HOWEVER : PAKISTAN’S ACTUAL RESERVES - S B P: 01.6573 - COMM BANKS : 06.5605 - TOTAL RESERVES : 08.2178

How to wreck an economy - S. Akbar Zaidi

LESS than two years ago, Pakistan’s economy was being celebrated for being dynamic, resilient, and on a path to high, sustainable, growth. Numerous international journals and newspapers — always critical of Pakistan’s economic management and governance — were waxing lyrical about the prospects for Pakistan’s economy after almost a decade of struggling.

The last fiscal year, which ended in June 2018, saw Pakistan’s highest GDP growth in 13 years. Moreover, from 2013 to 2018, the growth rate increased every year, a phenomenon not seen in Pakistan for quite some time;[/b] other than the fake ‘boom’ under Gen Musharraf, which was based on, and further resulted in, gross irrational speculation in real estate and stock market prices. The Musharraf bubble in all its manifestations — cultural, economic, political — eventually broke to reveal its false foundations.

Today, the story is very different. The expected growth rate for the current fiscal year has been lowered to near three per cent, the lowest in nine years, and is expected to be lower still in the subsequent two years. Inflation has started rising again, to levels not seen for the last five years, and the rupee is worth a third less in the international market compared to what it was just a year or so ago. With lower development expenditure and lower projections for manufacturing growth, all accounts suggest that Pakistan’s economy is facing a serious crisis. However, this crisis has not been caused as much by fundamentals, as by complacency, incompetence, and utter mismanagement by the incumbent government.

The PTI government inherited an economy with the highest growth rate in 13 years, albeit strains were more than evident, especially regarding the current account and fiscal deficits. The rupee had been linked to a former finance minister’s irrational ego for far too long, and would have had to give at some point. Moreover, it was also fairly clear that if the previous government of the PML-N was re-elected, it would most certainly have gone to the IMF within days of taking office.

Read more: Why Pakistan will go to the IMF again, and again and again

This was also expected from the party which eventually won, despite their public bravado of claims to the contrary. Whatever views any economist held about the Fund, it was clear that Pakistan was on the verge of yet another IMF programme.

This so-called crisis which has taken place affecting Pakistan’s economy rests unambiguously on the shoulders of the finance and economic team managing the economy since August 2018, and especially on Pakistan’s finance minister. Decisions needed to be made immediately after taking office and a direction to addressing real and perceived, as well as potential problems, needed to be developed urgently. All that one has seen since the PTI government took over is a failure to understand how Pakistan’s economy works, what the key issues and problems are, and how they are to be addressed.

The hallmark of PTI’s economic programme in the last five months has been continued uncertainty and ambiguity. As anyone familiar with understanding how economies work would know, the core of all ills regarding economic planning and thinking is a government which has no clue about what to do about the economy, and hence, its chronic uncertainty.

The PTI economic team reflects such sentiments better than most governments in Pakistan’s recent history. Even if one disagrees with the politics of a particular political party, governments in the past have always put in a plan about what they want to do with the economy. Not all plans have worked, but market sentiment and investors have had some guidelines about what to expect in terms of direction, management and policy. Since last August, this has clearly not been the case as reflected in all markers of investor sentiment and confidence. Even international agencies have had to downgrade Pakistan’s economy’s ratings on how the economy has been managed.

Other than asking its three ‘friendly’ countries for desperate loans and deposits, there seems to be no policy, leave alone a vision, regarding Pakistan’s economy. Although the government celebrates a handful of dollars deposited with the State Bank of Pakistan by two countries, this is akin to giving someone who is completely broke and destitute and insolvent some money for safekeeping, so that they can try and look good, but are in no position to spend or use that money since it needs to be paid back and, that too, with interest.

Pakistan’s accounting books might look good for a few months because of money loaned to it, but these sums will need to be paid back. A loan is not a grant. And claiming that there are no conditions attached — whether political or military — to these loans, is naiveté of the highest order, a point raised by a senior member of Pakistan’s Senate.

Furthermore, while aggressive selective accountability against some political opponents might bring some cheer from the PTI faithful, this is bound to have negative consequences on economic activity in the short run with potential investors far more circumspect.

By saying that we may go to the IMF, or that we may not, or that we no longer need the IMF, the finance minister is stoking the already raging fires of uncertainty regarding Pakistan’s economy. He is fully entitled to opt out of an IMF straitjacket but needs to present a viable option of how he is going to address the growing strains in the economy. His double- or triple-speak, is clearly a reflection of his confusion and inability to find alternatives to bridge the foreign finance gap. The more he procrastinates, the more the damage done. And if by chance, he has found a magic wand which will rescue Pakistan from an inhospitable IMF programme, the sooner he waves it to end this uncertainty, the better.

Privatisation gone sour: Govt signed agreement to transfer PTCL properties ‘which don't exist' - Javed Hussain :rotfl:

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunications was briefed on Wednesday that at the time of privatisation of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) the then government had committed to transfer certain properties of the company which didn't even exist, DawnNewsTV reported.

During the briefing before the standing committee chaired by Senator Rubina Khalid, the secretary of Privatisation Commission said that China Mobile had placed a bid of $1.4 billion while Etisalat had struck the deal for 26 per cent stakes in the company against $2.6 billion.

In March 2006, the then government signed an agreement with Etisalat under which 3,384 properties of the PTCL had to be handed over to the company. However, the Senate body was briefed that the properties on the ground were only 3,248 while 38 properties could not be transferred, the committee was briefed.

The Privatisation Commission official informed the Senate committee, that after the government failed to transfer all properties to Etisalat — as mentioned in the agreement — the Middle East-based company has stopped the payment of $799 million to the government citing non-compliance of the agreement.

Senator Rehman Malik asked the officials what action has so far been taken against those responsible for the inclusion of false properties in the agreement. He directed the commission to brief Etisalat regarding the current situation.

The committee also discussed the reasons why PTCL pensioners had been denied the increase in pension despite orders from the Supreme Court.

The standing committee members expressed their resentment over the situation and directed the authorities to pay pensions to former employees of the PTCL by Jan 15, 2019.

In 2006, Etisalat, the Gulf Arab regions second-largest telecom firm, signed an agreement to purchase a 26 per cent stake in PTCL for $2.6bn, but the company has withheld the payment of $799mn, due to problems linked with a transfer of real estate units.

Under the contract, the government agreed to transfer the properties before Etisalat made the full payment.

Etisalat has faced increased competition in its home market after its monopoly was broken in 2007 by Dubai-based du. Etisalat, operating in 18 countries, including Egypt and India, is one of a number of Gulf Arab telecom operators that have expanded overseas after losing their monopolies at home.

Wow. Dimran really picked an excellent time to bend over to the faujis and become their pet.

To add to the abysmal state of economy, their lawyers at international courts have built a steady and heady habit of promptly flushing all their cases down the crapper.

They better replace their lawyers with some langurs sourced from local zoos. They can save up for the legal claims that the opponent will eventually lay on their a$$ess.

“Terroristani Executives – Legal Eagles – Solicitors, Accountants, Barristers, Business men etc. etc. & etc. and the Top of the Pile i.e. Armed Forces Staff – Senior as well as Junior - are so awful as Senior Executive that their services were much sought after by Terroristani Establishments eager to establish losses for tax purposes. Their prices were high, for failure often did not come easily. They had to start at the top and work their way down, and with sympathetic friends in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Karachi etc. losing money was no simple matter. It took months of hard work and careful mis-planning. A Terroristani misplaced, disorganized, miscalculated, overlooked everything and open every loophole, and just when he thought he had it made, the government gave him a lake or a forest or an oilfield and spoiled everything. Even with such handicaps the Elite of the Terroristanis could be relied on to run the most prosperous enterprise into the ground. They were self-made men who owed their lack of success to nobody.” So said Joseph Heller!

All these years 4 different govts (PPP, PML-N, caretaker and now charsi) have claimed that UAE govt owes Pakistan $800 Million Dollars. Only recently some 'anal' yst was commenting: why are we only begging for money from UAE and not demanding what they owe us?

Paki armed forces have a death grip on the pakistani system and they cannot afford to loose it as they have taken over prime properties through out the country. Just check the number of DHA (Defence Housing Authority) colonies/townships that have come up in all the major cities. The moniker DHA is conveniently used to mislead the aam abdul and ayeshas. The new fancy townships have very very few defence personnel staying in them. Just to maintain pretenses a few token houses in one of the sector are alloted to defence families and in the rest majority of the usurped land row houses/apartments are built and sold commercially  (General Kiyani's is involved in a big scandal where the DHA property was sold to private entity)

The paksitani armed forces had planned to take over the task of maintaining and operating the logistics/transportation division of pakistan railway. The real intention was to acquire the excess railway land but somehow they could not do it as the railways was (is) in a big mess and the armed forces while wanting to take control did not want to transfer the excess staff on their payroll :D

Farrukh Saleem had plagiarized the Game theory idea from BRF and wrote an article on it.

Dance not knowing, courtyard tilted.

South African pitches not good enough for Test cricket, complains Mickey Arthur
Pakistan head coach Mickey Arthur on Friday criticised the pitches for the first two Tests against South Africa, saying they were not good enough for Test cricket.
With his team facing a series defeat after two days of the second Test at Newlands, Arthur said the quality of pitches had deteriorated in the ten years since he coached the South African team.
Arthur acknowledged that the South African total did not back up his argument about the quality of the pitches but said he did not believe the pitches made for a fair contest.
He cited inconsistent bounce, with balls rearing out of cracks, which had led to seven stoppages for injuries to batsmen on Friday.
On the back of a century by captain Faf du Plessis, South Africa built a winning position, reaching 382 for six, a first innings lead of 205 runs.

Country handed over to incompetent people: Saad Rafique
PML-N leader Khawaja Saad Rafique on Saturday claimed that people who brought Prime Minister Imran Khan into power were now regretting their decision.
"The country has been handed over to incompetent people," Rafique told media persons outside the accountability court.
The Imran government has pushed the country towards a crisis
He said that the nation would soon oust the "civil dictatorship present in the country."
"Right now the prime minister is roaming all over the world with a begging bowl."

FATF set to review Pakistan case at Sydney.

Teams from Pakistan and the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) are going to hold a three-day session in Sydney beginning Saturday to discuss the issue of removing the country’s name from the Grey List. (Bhikari's are very confident - They are talking of removal from grey list instead of moving to the black list)

The meeting will review the progress made in achieving the targets set under an action plan to stop money laundering and terrorism financing from Pakistan.

A high-level delegation led by Federal Finance Secretary Arif Ahmed Khan has already left for Sydney to take part in the talks.

The delegation also includes high-level officials from the State Bank, SECP, FBR’s financial monitoring unit, interior ministry and DG NACTA.

During the talks, the delegation will present its joint committee report for FATF to the officials and brief them about the progress on the risk investment report of the force.

According to sources, Pakistan has accomplished multiple targets spelled out in the action plan of the FATF while many other targets are in their advanced stages of completion. (Translation- If you are not removing our name from grey list, then give us more time)

The members of the review committee are from China and India, with the latter having perceived prejudice against Pakistan. Keeping this in mind, Pakistani authorities have expressed their reservations over the inclusion of members from India in the task force. :rotfl: ( Lahori logic and sense of entitlement - examinee demanding its choice of examiner)

The sources further said that the three-day meeting will also see FATF’s review on Pakistan’s implementation on the action plan based on which Pakistan will present a report to FATF on January 14. (Mai-Baap allah ke naam pe grey list se nikal kar black list mein naa dalo)

I get the reason why Terroristani's dont want India in the FATF review committee. That is because By the end of September next year, Pakistan has to comply with the action plan it had committed with the FATF in June to get out of the grey list or else fall into the black list. Over the next nine months, i.e. till September 2019, the government will complete the investigation into the widest range of terror financing activities, including appeals and calls for donations and collection of funds, besides their movements and uses.

Pakistanis know that while they can fool the international communities by taking some cosmetic measures like seizing bank accounts and banning some groups they cannot do so if Indians give thier inputs. All Indian delegation has to do is to point to Hafeez Saeed and his terrorist organization openly collecting funds and donations in Pakistan and also maintaining bank accounts under different names. Indians can also give critical inputs on the hawala/drug/terror financing operations of D- Company which is under ISI protection.

Before judge: Suspect confesses to rape, murder of girl
NOWSHERA: The suspect accused of raping and brutally killing an eight-year old girl confessed to his crime in court on Friday.

Police presented 21-year old Yasir before a senior judge of Anti-Terrorism Court Mardan to record his statement under Section 164 of Pakistan Penal Code at the end of his physical remand.

He said the prime suspect was a friend of the victim’s father, adding that he was arrested from his residence.

Yawn crying :((

No gas for electricity: Power crisis worsens as gas-fired plants halt generation
Power crisis in Punjab worsened on Saturday after most of the gas-fired power plants stopped generation, leaving millions of consumers with no option but to face unprecedented loadshedding during chilly weather.

The major power distribution companies (Discos)– Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco), Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) and Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) –started observing frequent outages without any schedule due to increasing shortfall besides forced shutdowns on the pretext of protecting the system in an uneven situation.

“At present, there is no generation from all gas-fired power plants except 1,200MW Haveli Bahadur Shah (Jhang) and over 200MW Orient Power. The main issue is unavailability of gas for the plants as only 130MMCFD is being supplied to Haveli and Orient plants,” a senior official of the power ministry told Dawn.

“The total demand (on average) on Saturday remained at 10,500MW whereas the supply ranged between 7,000 to 8,000MW. So the shortfall ranged between 2,000MW to 3,000MW, leaving Discos with no option but to observe loadshedding on an hourly basis,” the official added, requesting anonymity.

He said most of the gas had been diverted to domestic sector since its demand continued rising with the increase in cold. He said the hydel power generation was also squeezing gradually due to low water flows.
