This shutdown of govt thing is probably uniquely american, isn't it? don't think any other country has this sort of stare downs that's part of legislative and government process.

i hear stories of people afraid to travel to avoid issues getting back. potential problems in filing for extensions and getting many audits etc.

i know one friend, who sends family to india for marriages etc, but does not travel himself.

his logic is - if they get blocked, he'll sell everything and move. if he gets blocked, they are all effed.

This trend of being harsh on immigrants was started under Obama regime. It will be misleading to think all this immigration related crackdown started under Trump. Obama being darling of the media could do no wrong.

Kinda like drug addiction in Punjab is suppressed by MSM now that there is a CongI govt but was highlighted by MSM when Akalis held the reins

I had a friend who had similar approach. Later on it got slipped that his H1B is expired or something of that sort. Not sure if that can affect travel or not. There was no GC filing for him until then.
On a lighter note did your friend consider traveling with his family

as a data point, certain fields like EE/CS students from the "good" institutes in india are being paid well locally.
eg amzn, msft types start off with a cash of 20 + stock of 20.
low pay level product cos like csco offer 10+10.
samsung intel etc are in middle or top bands probably.
the likes of ola, uber, practo money losing but cash rich , well funded cos etc also pay handsomely.
i know of several cases where people with 5 yr exp have breached the 50L CTC.

now compare that to a h1 life .... stuck for 20 years in GC queue @ mercy of gotus and the employer. living in terror of RFE and notices. the vast majority of h1 jobs via consultants and services cos are also pretty poorly paid - ridiculous figures like 100k in San jose which cannot permit bringing family also. so the bonanza of a onsite placement aint what it used to be anymore unless one can live like a sadhu.

maybe for top10% of h1/f1 applicants who can get through the lottery/20k cutoff and get into cash rich FANGM cos it makes good sense ... but rest of it may not be as lucrative anymore from EECS pov.

other branches i guess would have a even hard time finding h1/f1 jobs in "core" engg fields .... sometimes a Phd is mandatory like R&D scientist in pharma or NIH. and there again citizens will be preferred.

20% of IITian are joining PSU, 10% into teaching, baki 70% are joining industry or going for studies (management, MS etc).... probably the boom in MS grads from india that occurred in 2000-2010 era is now over. people were taking 40-60L loans for MS.

for those of top caliber who are set on Phd, I think it makes sense to go out on f1. but the get-rich-quick F1->H1 and H1 schemes have run out of steam. it was bound to happen at one point.

presently 300,000 desis are stuck in the GC queue. when will it clear FCFS to give fresh ones a chance at getting it in reasonable time.

the old scheme of services cos here to retain people saying "we will start your onsite H1 processing" aint going to work that well anymore.

the plunder and rape of the chindian intellectual resources to enrich their own system had to stop at some point due to other currents in the host society ...

^^What you have said is mostly true except that outside of IT industry, the pay is still low due to immense competition and jobs are hard to come by in desh, especially in mech & aero industries. So a lot of mech/aero & other core engineering students (at least in BLR) have their eyes set on Germany for Masters & beyond. I am not aware of how good & easy it is out there to get jobs as a foreign national & make it, but most of them are ready to struggle for it "there" vs here in desh.

true, unfortunately the manufacturing high end hubs soko, japan, cheen, germany either have enough people or simply do not like immigrants/indians moving in. japan seems intent on keeping its own people at high end, while bringing in ppl from mongolia, vietnam and other nearshore nations for low end.

there are not enough welcoming+growth hotspots in the world to absorb our vast legions of young and educated.

in the end, India must develop its own sectors and provide a outlet for their needs and expectations.

nobody owes us anything, and we owe nobody anything. koi desh kisi ka bhai nahi hai.

some of my cousins kids who passed out of middle rung ITvity colleges in india are struggling to even get a foothold in industry , let alone dream of riches. their parents who are univ professors, doctors, govt engineers had a much easier entry into jobs and gradually building their own homes and getting cars. not flashy lifestyle in a tier2 metro but solid, well set and sustainable with no downturn. some of them will get pensions also. the doctor can work well into old age until she remains interested. all of them also have good inherited property as their parents (my uncles) were the first generation of fairly well off people in the city.

And those suffering the most are fashion and luxury brands. And Apple is part of that group of companies. Over the past ten years, Apple has gone from being a technology company to becoming a fashion brand. Apple product launch events were jam-packed with fashion influencers and designers such as Virgil Abloh. Jony Ive hobnobbed with Anna Wintour, the Vogue doyen. And like many other fashion brands — such as those owned by Chanel, LVMH, Kering, and Richemont — it bet the farm on China. With a booming middle and upper class, like every big fashion brand, Apple benefited from the largesse of the Chinese consumer.

The trade war — which has gone from being a tweet to a tornado that has ripped the roof off one of Silicon Valley’s stalwarts. Trade wars obviously have a consequence, and Apple is suffering like every other luxury and fashion brand that has been too reliant on the Chinese consumer. Like Apple, they too have been puking on the side of the proverbial Wall Street. Tiffany, for instance, is down almost 14 percent over the past three months. Coach is performing even worse, almost as bad as LVMH, the company that owns Louis Vuitton, Loro Piana and a whole bunch of others.

The policy is to encourage self deportation. For visa employees, renewals are dicey. More so if someone needs to travel to 3rd country to get a visa stamped. Screws are slowly being tightened since 9/11, and cumulative effect is getting to be quite large.

Faith & Tradition Meet The Constitution in ****istan

Just as a self-test from my prejudices as a Mongolian used to the great wind-swept spaces between my ears, I am going to (a) write down my pre-fact-check predictions and (b) go and check the facts.

Pre-Judice:
a) The Doctor is originally from Bakistan onlee.
b) He is a Texas Republican because it suits his ****-headedness better, since he shares their prejudices against everyone else.
c) He knows whom to baksheesh.

^Fact-check:

1)
"Dr. Shafi is a board certified General Surgeon and has been in practice since 1998. He also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Surgical Group of North Texas and is the Medical Director at Baylor Scott & White Quality Alliance, where he works on improving the quality of surgical care. Dr. Shafi went to medical school at Aga Khan University in Pakistan, and completed post-graduate training at the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Shafi has been married since 1992, and his wife also has a graduate degree in healthcare management. They live in Southlake, Texas, with their three children. When he’s not taking care of patients, Dr. Shafi enjoys reading"
2) If u think Grapevine, TX is way out in the Boonies, well... it is metro Ft Worth, home to Bell Helicopters and a host of other high-tech companies.
By Meagan Flynn
December 5, 2018

The first time Shahid Shafi ran for a seat on the city council in Southlake, Tex., in 2011, advisers assured him a Muslim in post-9/11 America who spoke with an accent and emigrated from Pakistan would never win an election in Texas.
It’s a story that Shafi, a Republican trauma surgeon, likes to tell because he didn’t believe them. He won the Southlake City Council seat on his second try, in 2014, has since served as a delegate to multiple Texas GOP conventions and, in July, was appointed vice chairman of the Tarrant County Republican Party, located in Fort Worth.
Shows pic of him with grinning TX guvrnor Greg Abbott, which means baksheesh running into $$M.
O’Brien, who declined to speak with The Post, has publicly asserted that Shafi promotes sharia law and is affiliated with terrorist groups while offering no evidence other than that he is a mosque-attending Muslim. In lengthy tirades on Facebook reviewed by The Post, she has accused Shafi of being a “fake Republican” who perhaps became one at the urging of the Muslim Brotherhood so that he could infiltrate the party — again, without any evidence.
“This is, unfortunately, not the first time that people or my political opponents have tried to use my religion against me to distract the voters,” Shafi, who has fiercely denied O’Brien’s assertions, told The Post. “And unfortunately, I don’t think it will be the last either.”

NYT on the good doctor:

Texas Republicans Rally Behind Muslim Official as Some Try to Oust Him Over Religion
By Adeel Hassan
Jan. 10, 2019
Republicans in the third-most-populous county in Texas voted overwhelmingly against the removal of one of their party leaders from his post on Thursday.
The vote was not over qualifications or any misdeed by the party leader, Shahid Shafi, a surgeon and longtime Republican who was appointed vice chairman of the Tarrant County Republican Party six months ago.
It was over whether Dr. Shafi’s Muslim faith disqualified him from the job. The vote — and the bitter clashes leading up to it — came as Democrats have been heralding the arrival of the first two Muslim women in Congress last week.
“Religious liberty won tonight,” Darl Easton, the Republican Party’s county chairman, said after Dr. Shafi was supported, 139 to 49, in Thursday’s vote. “And while that makes a great day for the Republican Party of Tarrant County, that victory also serves notice that we have much work to do unifying our party.”
Dr. Shafi, who emigrated from Pakistan 29 years ago, sailed into his role in July, with a single dissenting vote. Since then, Texas Republicans have tried to smother the brush fire lit by Dorrie O’Brien, who cast the lone vote against him and who began to agitate for his removal soon afterward. Ms. O’Brien was one of the 269 Republican representatives eligible to vote, each one representing a voting precinct in the county. On Thursday night, those precinct captains voted in a two-and-a-half-hour executive session behind closed doors in a church.Mr. Easton said the vote demonstrated the party’s allegiance to the Constitution and its prohibition of religious and racial discrimination.“This vote reaffirms the commitment by a majority of Tarrant County Republicans to our core values and moral compass,” he said.
Ms. O’Brien had spent the last several months persuading precinct chairs to oppose Dr. Shafi, and she was able to gain another 48 dissenters by Thursday night. One of them, Dale Atteberry, was upset with the results and quit after the vote. “We don’t think he’s suitable as a practicing Muslim to be vice chair because he’d be the representative for ALL Republicans in Tarrant County, and not ALL Republicans in Tarrant County think Islam is safe or acceptable in the U.S., in Tarrant County, and in the TCGOP,” Ms. O’Brien wrote on Facebook in December.
This was not the first effort to block a practicing Muslim from a Republican leadership role in Texas. In 2016, a local precinct chair tried unsuccessfully to prevent another Pakistani-American from becoming a precinct chairman in Harris County, which encompasses Houston and is the fourth-largest county in the nation.

Federal shut-down is affecting 80,000 fed employees badly, which includes TSA staff who are working without pay. How long can it continue - is hard to say.
A couple of things as mentioned above:

1. BO deported hundreds of thousands LatAm refugees with midnight flights packed like sardines taking off from southern airports. But those were poor refugees / asylum seekers, and the media turned a blind eye. But BO didn't touch the highly educated f1, h1 folks, and they sailed a smooth boat.
But things are different now. Even after getting h1 visa, the labor certifications are rejected left and right for the highly educated foreign employees. Those who have their labor certifications done are now waiting for a 20+ yrs of GC line.... You can get a sense just by looking at the marriage market. Suddenly no one wants to touch the H1b visa holders with a 12-foot long pole.

2. Due to the fed govt shut down, agencies like NSF, NIH, DOE, etc. - the agencies which dole out billions of $$ are closed. If this continues for
another two months (hypothetically) then all universities would feel the pain, and it'll have much wider ramifications in the economy. At the same time, this shut-down is strengthening DT's base like never before. If he can hold on to his 30% solid base then he will sail through easily in 2020.

3. Engg / IT sector jobs will be getting out of reach of desi folks in the US, because a vast number of 2nd gen immigrant population are going in that path. I mean, these are well-educated with immigrant values, pampered by their parents are smart enough and they can run the US economy smoothly without much dependence on foreign born US educated folks. There will still be some (but not much) jobs available in academics, but that's changing too. In areas like Bio / Chemm / Physc / Math it is becoming a norm to do post-doc work for 2 - 12 years before you settle for a faculty position. This is mostly untenable for the desi folks. Some still lingers on, but stringent visa norms are on the way to discourage them.

true. the h1 visa is a train to nowhere now in terms of gc unless one can file in eb1 typically after phd.
the one loophole still being exploited for langotia yaars by small international cos in L1a. unlike a eb1 where they can ask for qualifications , a L1a needs nothing more than 1-2 years of being a "people manager" :D small cos can easily arrange to show more reports to inflate the executives status too.

And I do believe that he **WANTS*** to make this happen because he knows very well that the difference between a 99th percentile and an 80th percentile is a factor of 100K in productivity and innovation. He knows the Oiropeans and Kangaroos and Kiwis and Singaporeans are out eating US' lunch for the next decades, even as Eleven prepares for war of all kinds, while the ICE babucracy sits around yada-yada-ing, caught in knots in each other's undies.

BO would spend 1,000,000,000,0000 tear-bringing Inspiring Speeches On The Need 4 Reform. The present crop of democrats taking over, sorry they couldn't even budge Ass-e-Pelosi from the kursi.
DJT would just give the order and fire anyone, right up to 4- or 5-star Jarnail, or billionaire CEO or Toughest Elephant Senator, from appointed positions in a flash.
Fear Is The Key
Getting back to the timing, I wonder if the Declaration of State of Emergency will include giving him powers to scrap the entire ICE system and replace it with a corporate merit-based one. At the end of WW2 the military managed to "process" a few million applications, without benefit of email or supercomputers.

Another "loophole" of sorts is for people whose spouses were not born in India. Even if the spouses are on H-4, not H-1 the primary GC applicant can use their spouse's birth country on the application to jump the queue. I have a few friends whose wives were born in the gulf and used this route to get GC very quickly while the others have to wait the usual 10-20 years.

The H-1 - GC route is still extremely lucrative for anyone with the above advantage or if they're themselves not born in India (even if Indian citizens). Only problem is for India and China born folks which is the majority of applicants. Trump can promise "path to citizenship" but that path already exists. It is torture for most desi folk unless they get rid of the country specific quotas for GC. This, neither the republicans nor the democrats will ever do because that will cause a flood of applications from India and China to get approved and lead to even more applications.

People need to read and weep. Really sad.
In 2005, LaVena Johnson, a 19-year-old private first class, died of a gunshot to the head on a base in Iraq. Johnson’s death was found to be a suicide. After her father saw her body, however, he questioned the finding. She was right-handed, but the entry wound was on the left side of her head; she had a black eye, a broken nose, and teeth that had been shoved in; most disturbingly, her vagina had been severely burned with chemicals.

this is bound to happen when fighting far away from home, for diffuse threats that do not form a immediate danger to your own, society, family.....the CT bush war is a draining marathon with elusive targets and unclear friend and foe.
we have many cases of people shooting their colleague or officer with service weapon on being denied leave or mistreated on such stressful postings.

long term mental health and PTSD is the reality of todays never ending CT wars both internal and foreign. at any given time in india, 1000s of paramils are onsite in naxal areas, and 1000s of army in terrorist infested tracts of JK.

a short overt war kills more people but the enemy and objectives are much more clear and so is the endgame.

the US army is imo no more or less prone to men of low character joining the ranks and hoping to profit on the side. any large bureaucracy will always tend to passing the buck and CYA. so it follows.

With the quality of donkeystanis opposing, she should win the nomination easily. In an ideal world.. and if merit had anything to do with it, post-John Kennedy.
Probable strategy is to get the hard experience now, and do a serious run in 2024. Maybe as Republican, when the u-no-hu wont be running.

What this will do is to get a few discussions on things that need discussing, like facts. By someone who is honest and competent.

Those two qualities say why she should be as far away from DupleeCity as she can be. Maybe move to Guam or Diego Garcia?

And this from our "Making America Great Again" series.
after someone reported that the 6-year-old boy appeared to have a heavy object in his pants. {NO, it would have been a bad mistake to think that was some candy..This is America}
Columbus police didn't disclose whether the gun was loaded Friday when it was safely taken from a student at Columbus Africentric Early College. A photo shared by police showed bullets with the seized firearm.
Police say the boy won't be charged because he's so young. They're investigating where he got the weapon.
WBNS-TV reports a principal said in a letter to parents that the student "will face appropriate discipline" but didn't specify what that would be. Principal Tyree Pollard reiterated the Columbus schools' zero-tolerance policy on weapons and urged families to talk with children about keeping such items out of schools.
