I think it is a gross failure of the Indian Diplomatic Corps that this garbage happens in today's US circles. I mean, associating another term for the present elected Govt of India, with "communal violence" and calling that "intelligence"? WTH is the Indian Amb doing? I know... sitting at the airport in DupleeCity to travel to chai-biskoot-rasgolla in the Deep South to get away from the snow. If the planes are taking off from National airport today.

Shouldn't the GOI TAKE that statement as an expressed INTENTION to star communal violence, and point to the Haas School's (People's Republic of Berkeley) blatant program to train Indian urban Naxals to conduct communal riots? Sad to see that the DipCorps has again sunk into their 1990s incompetence. Modi's Ekshternal Aphairj Mantri-Alaya is the problem?

Surprised that the US hasn't enlisted NATO for Talks With Taliban. The French are the experts in Surrender Negotiations, with their experience of surrendering to all, hain? And the Germans, twice in the past century. Would fit right in with the Pak Army's own record.

Spotted discussion on the topic of the disparaging :x US characterisation of Indian Elections rather late, starting with the above post.

For good order X Posting excerpt dealing with “South Asia” from the WORLDWIDE THREAT ASSESSMENT of the US INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY, January 29, 2019 to this thread also from the India-US Relations News & Discussions thread, the Terroristan thread, Afghanistan News & Discussion thread besides the Neutering & Defanging Chinese Threat thread.

Truly Hack Thoo disparaging stuff regards India from the US Government :x :
SOUTH ASIA

The challenges facing South Asian states will grow in 2019 because of Afghanistan’s presidential election in mid-July and the Taliban’s large-scale attacks, Pakistan’s recalcitrance in dealing with militant groups, and Indian elections that risk communal violence.
Afghanistan Stalemate
We assess that neither the Afghan Government nor the Taliban will be able to gain a strategic ilitary advantage in the Afghan war in the coming year if coalition support remains at current levels. Afghan forces generally have secured cities and other government strongholds, but the Taliban has increased large-scale attacks, and Afghan security suffers from a large number of forces being tied down in defensive missions, mobility shortfalls, and a lack of reliable forces to hold recaptured territory.
Pakistan Recalcitrance
Militant groups supported by Pakistan will continue to take advantage of their safe haven in Pakistan to plan and conduct attacks in India and Afghanistan, including against US interests. Islamabad’s narrow approach to counterterrorism cooperation—using some groups as policy tools and confronting only the militant groups that directly threaten Pakistan—almost certainly will frustrate US counterterrorism efforts against the Taliban.
Indian Elections and Ethnic Tensions
Parliamentary elections in India increase the possibility of communal violence if Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stresses Hindu nationalist themes. BJP policies during Modi’s first term have deepened communal tensions in some BJP-governed states, and Hindu nationalist state leaders might view a Hindu-nationalist campaign as a signal to incite low-level violence to animate their supporters. Increasing communal clashes could alienate Indian Muslims and allow Islamist terrorist groups in India to expand their influence.
India-Pakistan Tensions
We judge that cross-border terrorism, firing across the Line of Control (LoC), divisive national elections in India, and Islamabad’s perception of its position with the United States relative to India will contribute to strained India-Pakistan relations at least through May 2019, the deadline for the Indian election, and probably beyond. Despite limited confidence-building measures—such as both countries recommitting in May 2018 to the 2003 cease-fire along the disputed Kashmir border—continued terrorist attacks and cross-border firing in Kashmir have hardened each country’s position and reduced their political will to seek rapprochement. Political maneuvering resulting from the Indian national elections probably will further constrain near-term opportunities for improving ties.
India-China Tensions
We expect relations between India and China to remain tense, despite efforts on both sides to manage tensions since the border standoff in 2017, elevating the risk of unintentional escalation. Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an informal summit in April 2018 to defuse tension and normalize relations, but they did not address border issues. Misperceptions of military movements or construction might result in tensions escalating into armed conflict.

DT wins my thanks for this: for once a POTUS is calling out the idiocy in "Intelligence". They should stick to conducting coups in Central America.
Seriously concerned that they are going to destabilize Indian elections - to be already calling the elections "divisive". Compared to US election? :rotfl:

ramana, google for a New Yorker article with the name Kapoor. Hatchet job to beat all hatchet jobs. I wonder why the victims don't sue their knickers off. The hate-campaign is getting into full swing - and it sure ain't from the DT-Jugend, but from the Peaceful and Diverse ones who are showing their true colors - all monochrome.

Agree. Chance are that it will be orange man again. Not that he is popular, but an independent candidate (perhaps the coffee tycoon) may kill the chances of donkeys. The whole china trade war is going well in the short run (not sure if it is positive in the long run). I watched the khan/panda trade war update today afternoon. It was quite entertaining. It was tough to determine where DT's chest thumping ended and trade war update began. There is a strong chance that once China trade war stuff moves to the back burner, heat will turn on India. But there is not enough time to start that with election in India this year and election in massa next year. The way Chinese are cornered, India will be forced to make defense purchases, rewriting Indian e-commerce policy in favor of modern east India companies and much more. All those Chinese in the meeting today would be replaced by Indian diplomats in 2021.

I am not so sure sir. Unlike China we are not that dependent on exports to khanland. Our trade surplus is also not that badly one sided. Any intelligent khan move even under DT will be to increase the trade than sanction threats etc. True that they will try to push us but they will be foolish to push us too much knowing that we anyway are interested in two way trade increase in the first place.

Of course a lot depend of who wins in Indian in 2019.

$117400 salary is been declared low income by government in San Francisco. Just imagine
San Francisco families making $117,400 annually now considered low income
Dan Simon/CNN
CNN
(CNN) — Are San Francisco families earning $117,400 a year really considered low income?

That’s what the latest data from the US Housing and Urban Development Department seems to suggest.

No doubt San Francisco has seen both its incomes and home prices soar in recent years, thanks largely to money flooding in from the tech boom. But the figure from HUD, which is income for a family of four, requires a bit more explanation.

Every year, HUD sets income limits that determine who can qualify for housing assistance, including Section 8 vouchers, public housing and other assistance programs. The calculation is also used to set eligibility for affordable housing built by developers who receive tax credits.

The formula takes into account an area’s median family income, as well as its housing costs. Those who make 80% of the formula amount are considered “low income,” while those earning 50% are “very low income” and those making 30% are considered “extremely low income.”

In the San Francisco metro area, which includes Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo counties, an income of $44,000 or less for a family of four is considered extremely low, while the upper limit for having a very low income is $73,300.

These numbers are certainly eye-popping — and they have been rising swiftly. In 2014, the extremely low income limit was $33,200, the very low was $55,350 and the low was $88,600.

Home prices have been rising at an impressive clip, too. The median home value in the San Francisco metro area was $947,500 at the end of April, while the median rent was $3,300 a month, according to Zillow, a real estate marketplace.

Only 15% of San Francisco county residents could afford a median-priced home in the first quarter of 2018, according to Paragon Real Estate Group. That compares to 57% in the United States overall.

All this, however, doesn’t mean that those earning six figures in San Francisco can now qualify for public housing or vouchers, a HUD spokesman stressed. In fact, those receiving federal housing assistance are typically making around $18,000 a year, according to the agency’s data.

Also, the poverty guideline in the city is $25,100 for a family of four — as it is across the continental United States, since it doesn’t take into account the cost of living. That’s the figure that matters in determining eligibility for many safety net programs, including food stamps, Head Start and some parts of Medicaid.

But San Francisco’s high HUD income limits do allow middle class workers to qualify for affordable housing developments, said Susan Popkin, an institute fellow at the Urban Institute.

“Teachers, firefighters, people who work in restaurants commute crazy hours because they live so far out,” said Popkin, recalling that a Lyft driver who is also a nurse at a hospital once told her he sleeps in his car during the week because his home is too far away.

Berkeley-Stanford Alert. This is at the core of the "Intelligence" tiff.
"If we wind the clock back two years, I'd say 99.5%-plus of the ISIS-controlled territory has been returned to the Syrians. Within a couple weeks, it'll be 100%," acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan told reporters this week. But he also noted, "ISIS is no longer able to govern in Syria. ISIS no longer has freedom to mass forces. Syria is no longer a safe haven. We've eliminated the majority of their leadership. We've significantly diminished their financial capabilities."

CNN's Zachary Cohen contributed to this report.
He doesn't ACTUALLY claim that it was the US that "returned the 99.5% of territory to the Syrians" and doesn't specify WHICH Syrians. Could be the Moderate Child-Beheaders.

So the claim is that a few guys sitting in Al Tanf - and a few B-52s pulverizing the civilians in Raqqa - are what "returned 99.5% of ISIS-controlled territory ****TO THE SYRIANS***". Savor that for a moment. Now it is essential to GTH out of there before there is any incident that shines too much light on what actually happened.

But the Intelligence Chief went public and claimed that ISIS might return - because, if they do, it will be blamed on him as an "Intelligence Failure" otherwise, by the WHOTUS. So he is doing a big-time CYA. White House does not like that, because it contradicts the POTUS' claim of Victory. If the POTUS does not claim VICTORY b4 withdrawing, he is seen as a WIMP.

Wonder why the intel/pengaton guys think that ISIS will return - some new scam in the works between Israel, KSA and USA?
Overall, looks like the entire General Staff of the Pentagon and CIA are rotters.

Makes the French look herrowic in comparison.

What they are really worried about is not ISIS but Assad getting back all the territory still occupied by the moderate beheaders which the Americans and Saudis supported. But he can't say that, so has to mention ISIS. They are also worried about what the Turks might do to the Kurds once the Americans leave. They can't say that openly as well since Turkey is still a NATO ally.

The "elephant in the room" is that US foreign policy has been utterly corrupt and EXTREMELY so since BO took over. Makes even the stupidity of Dubya pale in comparison. They have now managed to *uck up the entire Middle East and North Africa: Libya, Syria, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Mali, Sierra Leone, Egypt, and then tried the coup in Turkey, and got Qatar and KSA to fall out.

OTOH, Russia has got back into the ME in a huge way, first time since the Afghanistan intervention of 1980. And the point is that now Russian assistance is vital to keep the ME from totally blowing up. At the same time the WHOTUS has to pretend to be Tough on Russia - while the Mueller Probe and the dozens of Probes now brewing in the House all scream at Russia.

To their credit the DT admin has avoided any really major cockups, despite the pressure to destroy Syria, bomb Iran, etc etc. They seem to be doing with an increasingly unstable high-wire dance.

Enough to give anyone schizophrenia. Or about 5 different personalities.

Oh, and it is shortly going to become very clear that Pakistan has won in Afghanistan and the Taliban will sweep into Kabul in good time.

This is about the Blackface storm currently blowing in Virginia.
The accused are the Dem. Governor and Attorney General.
The accusations:
Gov. Ralph Northam said he was in a picture in his medical school yearbook of two people -- one in blackface, the other in KKK robes. He then recanted and said he wasn't in that picture. But he added that he *had* darkened his face to look more like Michael Jackson for a dance contest in 1984.
State Attorney General Mark Herring, in a statement released Wednesday morning, acknowledged that he, too, had appeared in blackface at a party. "In 1980, when I was a 19-year-old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time, like Kurtis Blow, and perform a song," Herring said.
At the same time the Lt. Governor
A woman named Vanessa Tyson accused Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax of assaulting her during the 2004 Democratic National Convention in Boston. Fairfax angrily denied the allegations. Then on Wednesday Tyson released a statement, in which she said in part "what began as consensual kissing quickly turned into a sexual assault."
OK b4 I get banned... I am posting these here because of the fast-growing implications. The 2004 thing appears to be more recent than the 1970s accusations against the SC Judge candidate, but 2004 is still a long time ago, and it is close enough that one cannot claim that there was no environment to make the accusation right away rather than 15 years later.

The other two "cases" are that someone went to a fancy dress ball or equivalent party. Hardly a KKK lynching session, which is my point. And there seems to be utterly no voice of moderation or sense asking: "So WHAT?" Is this guy MORE of a racist than his cohort? In Medical school?

For someone who sees the realities up close in Ulan Bator, it is pretty amazing that the discourse is on the equivalent of mosquito bites while ignoring the tigers tearing the body apart. Racism is blatant in things that really matter - and the worst "perps" are often the most "diverse" and "PC": utter snakes. Very often diverse in gender as well.

Why relevant to India? Ha! Imagine the sheer potential for unseating pretty-much the entire political leadership and all other leadership in India, if this standard is followed. The other day someone posted on WhatsApp that Rajeev G and Sonia G thought as with one brain - hers. Someone immediately pounced on that and said: "Ha! Offensive. The Group Admin can be jailed for this!"

Laughable, right? Or is it?

Is free speech dead? Satire punishable by death? And the Statute of Limitations utterly dead as a concept? The Presumption of Innocence equally so? And is there any better discourse on these things than there is in the mob-ruled US of A?

While we are at it, Peter Sellers is dead and gone, I believe. So he can't be sued, but didn't he appear with a brown-faced costume as an Indian student/actor in a California movie? How is that different?

And right on cue comes this article - see the name of the lead character there. Yes, it is US domestic politics, but I hope everyone can see the relevance to India. This so-called Millennial Movement has much in common with entities in India who are also going to be major players in India in the immediate future. Urban Naxals? Not really. These are more like CPI(M)/DYFI taking over the INC.
“I am talking about the radical conservatives in the Democratic Party,” said Saikat Chakrabarti. “That’s who we need to counter. It’s the same across any number of issues—pay-as-you-go, free college, “Medicare for all.” These are all enormously popular in the party , but they don’t pass because of the radical conservatives who are holding the party hostage.”
I think they are behind the troubles of the donkeystanis in Virginia (c above).

They want to take the Dem Party far to the left - and maybe, just maybe, capture the hope and enthusiasm of the younger generation, while the old hopeless generation gets in their red pickups and loads up their shotguns and spreads the Rebel flags and rides for the Unspeakable Side. The ones likely to fall in the ditch are the Middle-Of-The-Roaders/Fence-Sitters, now described as Conservative Dems.

IMO the result will be a refugee exodus from Donkeystan to Elephantstan, as happened in the Deep South in the 90s, enabling urban elephants to sweep to power in the metros and Capitols. Check names such as Zell Miller, (Democrat) Lt. Guvnor and then a very popular Guvnor of Georgia, who became a Republican Senator before he retired. (Passed away a few years ago).

IOW, look for California and New York to go elephant if this keeps up. OTOH, if the JDs are really successful, they may attract an avalanche of the Elephant Hitler Jugend to their ranks, and that may sweep an ultra-left POTUS and COTUS to power in Nov. 2020.

Either way, not necessarily hopeful signs for the USA. And some ominous lessons/portents for India - these ppl are using technology that may be semi-Indian in origin, but equally dangerous in their power in USA and India.

Abortion as a cultural issue has gone off the deep end too. Forget Roe vs. Wade and what the Supreme Court might do...

Ralph Northam should be remembered for advocating the slaughtering of deformed babies
"If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that's what the mother and the family desired. And then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother. So I think this was really blown out of proportion,"

every US politician from town hall councillor to POTUS talks fervently about "building our schools" to match that of OECD top end avg, but has anyone found a soln to poorer towns generally having much worse schools than richer towns? OECD does not stop rich people clustering together as they wish but do they somehow run the schools in poorer towns better ?

is US schooling really poor? imo its pretty ok - they have good ITI type vocational training system, community colleges and feed into labour force IF manufacturing can be brought back. and their rich towns have top notch schools . not everyone can or should get into ivy league as not that many jobs are there.

Huge debt due to education costs, health care crises are moving khanland into leftist heaven in one or two decades. Freebee culture is coming to stay soon. Dems are slowly going towards socialist mode. But it may not change the nature of the deep state. If anything it will become more powerful than ever. Neo Conservatism will become establishment thought. GoP will find it very hard to win white house. Only Senate may have some GoP hold for some more time but in the end it will also fall to Dems.

I would support universal Medicare except that the prevailing wisdom, with the present structure, is that the insurance and drug companies would rob the nation into bankruptcy. Unless there is an outright revolt against medical costs (across the board slash by a factor of 10, Lenin-like) and bringing in open global Telemedicine competition like in the EyeTee industry, I see no way out. But I wonder if these Mao-Youth (MY) in donkeystan have any clue how to do this IF they get power. Medical Care is IMO THE big issue that looms for everyone. You can't just go into the woods and live in a cashless society because if someone falls ill and you DON'T take them to the ripoff medical system, you will get arrested and the SWAT team will come and kill you if you resist. If you take someone to the medical system, they get their claws into you. BO-care was a good start but lost steam at about 5% of Task Completion. Bringing unlimited global competition is the first requisite I believe - THEN the greed will have to be attacked.

one of the reason is the high cost of malpractice insurance that doctors and hospitals have to buy.
reason being courts and juries quick to side with alleged victims and giving them huge compensation.
the courts are pretty swift there and no much backlog

then ofcourse the pharma cos are as cozy in deep state as are the defence ones. under the guise of IP protection and research costs, they price meds for huge profit.

With many states enacting tort reform, the malpractice premiums and payouts have gone down significantly in the past decade or so. http://truecostofhealthcare.org/malpractice/

This is what Trump wants. His " Mission Accomplished" moment in Syria! He's trying to achieve that in Afg. too, but there's little chance with the Paki- Taliban JV.In fact the US has shamelessly started to butter the backsides of the Pakis by participating in their latest naval exercises. So much for the great "strategic partnership" with India and exercising with the IN, trying to form an anti- Chin " Quad".Truly does the Yanqui speak with a forked tongue.

The US is in an interesting bind in A'stan. If they don't bring the Pakis in again, the other players are (sorry India is not going to get militarily involved*): Russia, China, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and ****tra la la!****** IRAN!
*: DT's frustration with Indian refusal to take the Afghan hot potato was reflected in his rant about NaMo going on and on for hours about the Library that India set up in Kabul. IMO NaMo was stalling, like the Naranatha Bhranthan eating his rice one grain at a time. Eventually DT gave up.

17 years makes it one of the longest ever wars, even going by the lengthy stds of hybrid wars like vietnam whose war of independence was 1945-1955 and resulted in partition of the country. the overt american war in vietnam started in 1955 and ended in 1975. before that americans were helping the french.

And yet the outcome remains the same as it was for the Vietnam war.

Gotta love US deep state thinking.

unlike vietnam which is a old and mature civilization and could recover from the devastation unleashed on it by the euros, afpak as i explained in another thread is the "spaces between the boundary" of two old civilizations - india and persia and has struggled to function as a modern nation state vs old tribal and ethnic lines and deep resource scarcity - water, food, arable land - for its size the pop is quite low (35 million) . plus its settled mode of buddhism & hinduism was uprooted by islam and the place became a crossroads of armies from every direction moving through to plunder and pillage, a lot of afghan tribes also joined this bandwagon and headed south or west. all their tribes are militarized and pretty much none are the peaceful unarmed farmers or herders you would see in india or persia. anyone can be a part time taliban.

the long term soln maybe a partition of afpak into a pathanistan comprising SE af + northern TSP, a shia dominated stan adjacent to iran and a russian/indian managed northern alliance-i-stan in north afpak - ethnically and culturally uzbek and tazik people. the harazas can join or relocate to this third pocket. the flow of the fight and trade , social relations is along these fault lines for a long time now.

the talibs get their own country to rule over and enforce 'true islam' while the other two can get iran and russia/india to build themselves into more viable states. a federal structure with Kaboul being a brussels type EU HQ to set a few guidlines for the 3 new STANs may also be viable.

Iran will get its base in Herat, Talibs can build one in Kandahar GHQ. USA can build its bases in jalalabad , khost and khyber. russia already has its bases in NA. Cheen is there in aksai chin and adjacent tracts like hotian. they can all party together there until the end of time, periodic plots and loud blasts ringing through the dark night.

its like those planets the starship troopers try to invade. none can govern it or impose their will on it.
