They help by allowing greater speed via AB and you may have contingencies where you need to fly low to maintain surprise and avoid EW radars. You have more options as you could always jettison them if required.

More than likely the Phalcon is in the mix too. The Indian subcontinent airspace is quite busy from early morning.

Drop tanks may be needed depending on the payload.

Indian Mirage are fitted with ATLIS II pods and BGL 1000 Kg laser-guided penetration bombs. They are very effective and low error rates. The impact would be ginormous not like this.

The point is if Baki army is acknowledging this much then much more than just entering and drop a few bombs has happened.
By rule of thumb, I always take they report 30% of what actually happened.

Funny thing is that Pakistani air defences would have been on full alert this close after Pulwama. No surprise factor here.....and still the aircraft got in, bombed and got out. Total chaddi utaroing here.

Heres how it would have gone down.
A 12 ship formation of Mirage 2000s, including escorts, armed to bear with Micas and EW pods, escorting the core strike package.
Behind them, a valhalla of already assembled Sukhois with A2A gear & with some aircraft carrying those giant SAP pods.
Coordinated by Nethra.
A few A2A Refuellers in the Air and with Choppers with CSAR Commando teams (mix of IA SF and Garud) waiting for orders.

PAF detected the above. Realized an angry elephant was charging into its way. Picked up its skirts. And ran to the side to take a tinkle in the bushes in fear.

And that was that. All this talk of JF-17 retaliation is bunkum.

M2Ks flew to Khyber Pakhtunwala too and struck targets there. Air Refueling also used. Was the backup plan to land in Kabul if need be? Jf17s being shot down coming from multiple sources.

the JF-17 was on full afterburner and dispensing flare? Why, the dude was shit scared, wanted to run as fast and as far as possible (hence after burner) and avoid the heat seeking that maybe incoming with flares. So we must have locked (and maybe fired)

This guy is talking about stuff he has no clue about. Indian Mirage 2000s field Litening + Griffin LGBs + Paveway 2 LGBs + Crystal Maze/Popeye2 ASMs.. they have a range of options.Reason they would have been chosen is because to date, they have the best EW fit in the IAF, making them perfect for such a mission. They most definitely were backed up by a 2nd flotilla of Su-30s equipped with pure A2A loads (12 missiles + SAP pods).

There is no way IAF did not anticipate pak jets crossing the line in retaliation. Had they done it they must have walked into the trap.
