FFS
I am hating the beginning of 2019.

question why is there an odd number of pilots (3) in even number of aircraft (2).
was one of them carrying a passenger.

The hits just keep on coming.

Om shanti.

P.S. I am sorry, I can't really understand what's happening in the picture posted above. Is it of the pilot ejecting?

livefist links to another twitterer who page has a few cellphone videos of the two a/c after collision spinning and fluttering down out of control. the bottom one crashes, the upper one both pilots eject. the one with broken nose is the bottom plane.

there were reported doing a move where one plane inverts and comes close to the bottom plane - quite std in aerobatic displays - i think they do a loop kind of thing with both planes close together.(in make believe world tom cruise also does that with the mig in top gun)

RIP to the deceased pilot and speedy recovery to the injured pilots.

We must accept that Military Aviation is a dangerous & unforgiving profession and that a fighter jet doesn't differentiate between a novice & an ace. We are grateful to have such men & women who continue to serve in such a profession regardless of the risks. May their tribe increase.

"...Rather we should thank God that such men lived." General George Patton Jr.

Some other thoughts:

1.Of late, a disturbing development in some recent crashes is that there seem to be lot of citizens running around with phone cameras photo/videographing the fallen warriors. It is time to punish such wannabe Barkha Dutts & Arunabh Goswamis by enacting a law that anyone photographing a fallen warrior may be tried for dishonouring the Armed Forces. Same law should be applied to the wannabe neurosurgeons who rush to the crash site and try to disturb the fallen warrior & cause more harm than good.

2.At this time we should take relief & confidence from the fact that in the recent past the IAF has conducted large scale operational exercises like Gagan Shakthi 2018 and Vayu Shakthi 2019 with zero safety incidents. So, we may bleed more in peace but we will definitely bleed less in war.

Here is a slowed down video clip showing the clash incident before going down

https://twitter.com/i/status/1097791341533245440

Edit: Livefist had posted a video showing crash from a better perspective. Seems like it has been taken off now.

From initial observations, it seems like a pilot error. The bottom plane pulled up either too soon or the inverted plane did not.

Pilot in the inverted plane is inverted, so already he's under G pressure + a massive hard knock from below, which means additional Gs in the opposite direction. He could've been black/red out-ed & incapacitated.

here is a gem from the SC.

Anyone using "6th gen aircrafts & jets"??

Utkarsh Anand @utkarsh_aanand Feb 17

"It was bound to crash": #SupremeCourt uses strong words to convey regret over death of two pilots in the recent Mirage plane crash in #Bengaluru. #CJI said when other countries are using 5th & 6th gen aircrafts & jets, #India is still using 3rd & 4th. "What else do you expect?"

This is incredibly moving and comforting, our peoples respect and humanity surfaces at the most opportune of times. The pilot is recovering, but I would state its very heartening that a 22 year old kid understood what to do and did it in a dignified manner. The pilot, despite his pain and obvious injuries is also able to communicate clearly with the student to not do anything rash, such as move him.

The video is also available, but out of respect for the pilots privacy edited it.

Squadron leader Sahil Gandhi belongs to the ‘Surya Kiran’ aerobatics team. The team presently uses the Hawk MK 132 aircraft and Sahil says that this aircraft is a faster one when compared to the previous aircraft that was operated by the team. “This aircraft is electronically intrinsic in nature. This not only makes maintaining it a challenge but also more susceptible to failure,” explains Sahil. He says that they have a maintenance team of 60 people headed by a technical officer who officer who maintain the aircraft on a day-to-day basis.
What does that bolded text mentioned by Wing Cdr Sahil Gandhi mean?

While we read about pilots passing away in news articles and on social media, here is a first person account.

Truly heart wrenching. Click on link below and read the entire thread.

https://twitter.com/Joshi_Aar/status/10 ... 3011940352 ---> When I hear of a plane crash or pilots bailing out, my mind races back to that day in Dec 1999. This is a slightly long, emotional post, so please bear with me. I write this because I can’t even imagine what Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi’s family must be going through right now.

https://twitter.com/KPP_JaiHind/status/ ... 0434086912 ---> Surya Kiran 2 aircraft crash

Wing Commander Sahil Gandhi - Fatal

Wing Commander Vijay Shelke - cut injury in chin. Blunt injury to limb. No fracture. Hemodynamically Stable.

Wing Commander Tejeshwar Singh - Fracture of femur and shaft in both legs.

Injured shifted to CHAF.

--------------------------

In case anyone is wondering what Hemodynamically Stable means, here you go (courtesy of google)....

If a patient has stable hemodynamics, it means that the force at which the heart pumps blood is stable. Maintaining stable blood flow in the heart and vessels is important in supporting normal organ functions including the heart.

And below is what a shaft is. Any doctors on BRF can provide more details if anyone is interested.

Image

And I am assuming CHAF stands for Command Hospital Air Force.

According to media reports here in BLR, the aircraft around noon were performing the "mirror" move when the upside down Hawk on top lost alt. and collided with the lower aircraft. One reason being bandied about are thermals as it was very hot.It could also havd been a drop in engine thrust .Anyway the act was filmed and BB recovery shpuld quickly ascertain the reason.

Another v.trahic incident, our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved loved ones. It's almost too heart-wrenching to read the full family story, the pictures are bad enough.

Very hard to watch and incredibly touching. And amazing the level of training. Despite a bad crash the pilot is not only cool and calm but he also tries to calm down onlookers who will probably be untrained spectators and do more harm than good in following their instincts to hastily lift him & rush him in some vehicle to a hospital.

Missing man formation was flown, today, led by Su-30MKI at Yelahanka as a tribute to Wg Cdr Sahil Gandhi, who was martyred during a rehearsal sortie on 19 Feb 19. Followed by a slow speed pass by #Rafale, as a salute to #Braveheart.
