Some like our local guide in Gulmarg who finally revealed he is pro paki and the reason stated is that they ensure that they don't disturb tourism which is the life line of the people there. He blamed corruption that the bribe rates of Govt job is 20Lakhs at a minimum. There is hardly any governance there with even cleaning of the road, removing snow being left to private enterprise.
Some kashmiris tweeter, who are pro-India constantly say how they wanted Governor's rule over PDP or NC. The insurgency is a money making business for all the players involved. The longer it goes, the gravy train will continue.

Hit hard at Pak, take off the local terrorists and get it off media. We should make J&K Union territory to clear the corruption mess.

It is quite easy for characters who benefit from this to pay off our Luytens MSM owners to keep the issue on media. The fact is we do not support pro-India voices in the valley.

Cross posting from Pulwama thread since this is a useful reference:

The biggest reason I would favor the Kishenganga Valley as a target for salami slicing is that it is a relatively lower risk option compared to some other areas along the LoC. India occupies dominating heights along the eastern and southern banks of the river, and since the 90s has on several occasions shut this valley down with shelling. So how has Pakistan been able to hold on to it? Simple - India has never tried to take over the whole valley. The Indian army reached this area in the 47 Kashmir War to throw out the invaders and protect the Kashmir Valley from a northerly access route, and they stopped at the valley because it offered a natural boundary. They probably felt that occupying additional territory in this area had diminishing marginal utility, since the area was and continues to be highly inaccessible from India even after some serious post-Kargil and Kishenganga hydro project related infra buildup. IA did occupy and retain a dominating feature in this area in 1972 to further consolidate dominance. On the other hand, the BSF had advanced to Minimarg in the upper reaches of the Kishenganga valley in 1972 but withdrew unilaterally for fear of over extension.

That said, the strategic calculus is very different in this age of Pakistan sponsored terror. The LoC in the central and lower KG (Kishenganga in this post, not Krishna Godavari) valley is heavily forested and ease of access has made it one of the most active infiltration routes - the infamous Kala Roos and Hafruda forests are close to the LoC here. Old time BRF member LNS is on record as wanting to burn down these forests because of the number of IA fatalities they claim in anti-terror operations. A lot of Paki IITs are located in this KG valley, making it an undeniable candidate if India wants to attack across LoC in self-defense in order to close major routes of terrorist infiltration.

But more than any of that, it is the increased activism of the current Modi government that opens up the most important strategic consideration associated with this valley: Burzil Pass. And let's be clear that now we are extending our discussion significantly beyond it's relationship with KG valley. Burzil Pass is about 15 km or so to the north of Minimarg - the KG valley radiates out to the south and west from it, which is why we are talking about it right now.

But there are two other two valleys connecting to this pass that are arguably even more strategically important. One is the Shingo River valley that radiates to the north and east and joins the Indus River to the north of... Kargil. It enters Indian Ladakh near Kaksar... sound familiar? Saurabh Kalia. Enough said.

And the third valley radiating out is the Astore valley to the west and north west. This valley directly leads to Skardu. The interesting thing about this route to Skardu is that it is actually the shortest route to Skardu form the LoC. In fact, this is a historical route into Kashmir Valley and is called the Srinagar Skardu road.

So here's the punch line: Burzil Pass is actually not that far from LoC. A branch of the Kishenganga actually cuts across the LoC from Minimarg in a southwesterly direction, so locally there are no accessibility issues even in winter. If India were to retake Burzil Pass (and let's be clear, this is a much bigger operation and a different kettle of fish than my original KG idea) then (a) India can move south along KG valley and slice of that valley, (b) move NE and clear the entire Kargil region of Paki intrusions and gain an additional easy access route to Kargil from the Kashmir valley, and (c) get dominating access to Deosai plateau and the road to Skardu and Gilgit.

The great thing is, there are other such examples for pretty much every other sector of the LoC, and some are even more exciting. But let me stick to this one because it jumps out from merely looking at a map, and leave the others for imagination...

Nam, J&K is synonym of corruption. Even Private banks used to ask for money to offer a job. Naturally if someone pays 20L for a govt job, He will try to recover this money and the cycle continues. But to be fair, The state is no more or less corrupt than any other state in India. It is just that there is lot of free moolah coming in , thanks to GoI. You will hardly see anyone in wretched poverty in whole of J&K. Everyone who is a stakeholder in J&K is neck deep in corruption including people sitting in Delhi, Islamabad and London.
Irrespective of what GoI does, corruption will not go away. the only time govt worked in a efficient manner was when Jagmohan Ji was the governor and he was hated by all Sarkari staff. Before and after him, It was a always money making venture.

Naturally KM's got bigger share in this loot due to leadership while Jammu got less and Ladhakh didn't even get crumbs.
Don't believe in whatever locals say. They are known to be double forked tongue. 30 years of terrorism and still someone dreams of 'not disturbing' tourism. What tourism when all you see is defense forces, teenagers throwing stones, sickening unhygienic conditions, destruction of natural habitat, Islamic signs everywhere and stakeholders who only want to fleece you.

I personally still believe that J&K should be split in 4 parts, 3 out of which will be nationalist while 4th one needs to be made dhimmi by force if needed. The days of velvet gloves should be over.

No Sir, People of Jammu and Ladakh have no love lost for Art-370. It is a tool now being used by Kashmiri Muslim leadership to keep everyone under their thumb. Right now, The battle is straight up between Sunni Muslims of Kashmir V/s rest of the state and sadly Sunni Muslims are winning this battle as GoI and media only is focused on them.

I don't understand why Govt plays pussy when it comes to J&K. What is so sacrosanct about Art-370 or the state of J&K. Just abolish the bloody article and split up the state. If it was a Hindu Majority state, JLN himself would have moved motion in Parl to scrap Art-370.
After all did Indira not abolish Privy Purse despite sovereign guarantee by Patel.

nam ji,

I beg to differ. Nobody in Jammu or Ladakh wants Art 370 or Art 35A to continue.
It is widely recognized as a scam favouring Kashmir.

as an example to buttress my claim here is a demand by a social organization published in a local Jammu based newspaper

http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/vbkp-seek ... paratists/
VBKP seeks revocation of Art 370, arrest of separatists
and here is another news item.

here is a demand by Prof Bhim Singh of the National Panthers Party a local political party which wins seats in the J&K Legislative Assembly from Jammu division

http://www.dailyexcelsior.com/abrogatio ... him-singh/
Abrogation of Article 370 only solution: Bhim Singh
on a regular basis some or the other social or political outfit regularly raises the abrogation of Art 35A and Art 370 in the gatherings, seminars or functions it conducts. The national press ignores it for reasons that best can be explained by them.

Articles 370 and 35-A are poisonous
Those who spoke included Labha Ram Gandhi, President, West Pakistan Refugee Action Committee; Dr Ajay Chrungoo, Chairman, Panun Kashmir; Retd Col. RSN Singh, Ex-Raw Officer and Defence Expert; Capt. Sikander Rizvi from Baltistan (PoJK), eminent Shia Scholar; Ashok Vasudeva, General Secretary, Vasudeva Kutambkum; Pushpendra Kulshrestha, India Correspondent, News (Pakistan); and this writer.
there was a meeting in Jammu on 7 Dec 2018 at Jammu Club, Jammu on Art 35A and Art 370. One of the participants Prof Hari Om Mahajan has written this article. It is quite indicative of the distaste which Jammu has for these provisions

In a major step on Wednesday, the Jammu and Kashmir government downgraded and withdrew the security of 18 Hurriyat leaders in the state.
According to the spokesperson of Home Department, it was felt that providing security to these separatist leaders is a wastage of scarce state resources which could be better utilised elsewhere.

Among the leaders whose security has been downgraded and withdrawn are SAS Geelani, Aga Syed Mosvi, Maulvi Abbas Ansari, Yaseen Malik, Saleem Geelani, Shahid ul Islam, Zaffar Akbar Bhat, Nayeem Ahmed Khan, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Farooq Ahmed Kichloo, Masroor Abbas Ansari, Aga Syed Abul Hussain, Abdul Gani Shah and Mohd Musadiq Bhat.
This is in addition the four persons whose security was withdrawn on Sunday.

In addition, the security of 155 political persons and activists, who did not require the security provided to them based on their threat assessment and their activities, was also withdrawn. This includes Shah Faesal, who resigned from the IAS and Wahid Parray.

Through this, more than 1,000 police personnel and over 100 vehicles are freed to do regular police work.

Welcome, vivekji. This IS the "fast-changing world". The other day in a major American university my 6th coujin was dragging his big sack and trudging to his parking space, when he spied these two smartly-and-identically-attired, white-shirt-polished-shoes-military-haircut, standing at the bus stop ahead of him.
Sort-of reminescent of the Hitler Jugend: ordinary college students today slouch around with Taliban hair and scraggly beard, Indian-style crumpled t-short or shirt hanging loose, cap on backwards, pants down halfway down their musharrafs showing cleavage, and dirty sneakers.
A desi student came by. Must be a First-Year judging by semi-respectable attire. First one HJ and then the other converged across him in animated conversation, like sharks racign to greet a tuna. About 1/2 a minute later, the desi was seen walking away, a big grin on his face, clutching some goodies.

This is in a govt. Technological madarssa in Yoo Ess which is considered 400% secular. Ahead of The Curve. Leading Edge. Riding the Wave of Change.

IMHO, the best response to this is laughter and absolutely tough hammer. *&^&* Conversionist bigots are worse than terrorists: they don't easily inflate themselves. In the case of Cashmore you see the Reaction from the (One Community) Faculty. Why is such an organization even permitted to exist? I can understand Electrical Engineering Faculty or Mathematics Faculty, but What the Goat's Ass is an *****ic Faculty Organization doing on a technological campus?

Hope the 35A and 370 are scrapped and all such nonsense stopped.

Since 2009 from the day P.Choribaram spoke of split to the day of Chornia split with Parliament doors closed and cameras off in 2014, the august Andhra constitutionalist Congress politicians with high jargons spoke about virtues of 371D article and how it can stop split due to requiring constitutional amendment. Cut to current day, there is NO Congress in AP, no court to entertain 371, no fulfillment of promises made in dark parliament house.

Yes scrap useless articles, eliminate kashmiri Muslim extremist Islamists and put dose of realism to rest of Kashmiri less Islamists on how rest of Indian enjoy their Indian (non)rights from corrupt politicians, police, and courts.

You want retaliation for Pulwama. Start with naming different roads and buildings in Srinagar and Pulwama after the 40 bravehearts who laid down their lives in Pulwama. Why are we looking at big bang event across LOC. Lets do small things on our side of the LOC.
Boom and Kaboom will happen whenever it happens.

From waht i have seen with my interactions with KMs in office and Delhi metro, they're not keen about any integration of sorts. They have a perennial sense of victimhood. Despite of the fact that a poor nation has been feeding them from hands. They care two hoots about integration. In my opinion, time has come to bring back papa 2 for a generation and give these guys a stick so that the ideas of azadis go along with their toenails and evaporates like petrol on private parts

Sir, through our inaction, we have given the Kashmiri Muslims a sense of entitlement.

A Kashmiri working in a pharma company in Mumbai praised the Pulwama attack. He was given a show cause notice for termination. The doctors of Kashmir took a decision to boycott the pharma companies for firing these Over Ground Workers.

https://freepresskashmir.com/2019/02/20 ... entatives/
On 15 February, Riyaz Ahmad Wani, a Kashmiri employee working with Macleods Pharmaceuticals Limited in Mumbai posted on his Facebook account, “Athh Wanaaan Surgical strike” (This is called surgical strike).

He has been asked to write a ‘Show Cause’ within seven days, “as to why his services should not be terminated with immediate effect for his anti-national attitude.”
After the news spread, doctors from the valley condemned the companies questioning their double standards on ethics and morals.

“I don’t want a drug by these hypocritical companies who suspended Kashmiri employees but didn’t take a moral stand at the grotesque human rights violations in Kashmir over last three decades,” Khan Khawar Achakzai, Registrar Internal Medicine Shri Maharaja Hari Singh (SMHS) Hospital wrote in his Facebook post.

Speaking to Free Press Kashmir, doctors who did not want to be named, identified with Khan’s stand. “As far as I know, these pharmaceutical companies won’t let even a single prescription go from their hands. All the doctors from the main to the tertiary level hospitals boycotting certain companies, will meant a lot to them. They will seriously have to reconsider the decisions and the terminations which they have made in the last week.”
https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/in ... 059366.cms
Doctors in Kashmir have decided to boycott Macleods Pharmaceuticals and Intas Pharmaceuticals over the decision of the two companies to suspend a medical representative, who had posted a Facebook status message which these companies considered “anti-national”.
The IAS topper Shah Faesal is suggesting a false conspiracy theory of India orchestrating Pulwama attack

https://twitter.com/shahfaesal/status/1 ... 9356924929

The influence of Wahabi Islam is increasing via mobile internet

https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/ind ... aign=cppst

The solution is clear. We must take away the entitlements from the ungrateful. As this serving IPS Officer in Kashmir clearly mentions

https://indianexpress.com/article/opini ... f-5591830/
Conversely, we must be clear about what is achievable in Kashmir. Preserving the demographic profile and cultural distinctiveness of the Valley is no longer in our national interest. Article 370 was a goodwill gesture by Jawaharlal Nehru that no longer serves its original purpose of making Kashmiris embrace the accession to India. If we want to show national resolve, repealing it would be exhibit A. It has long outlived its utility, if it had any to begin with. All it has done is create a limitless sense of entitlement in the Valley.
Secondly Jammu and Ladakh need to become the voice of J&K rather than the Kashmiris. For too long we have denied the rights of Ladakhis and Dogras to appease the Kashmiri Muslims.
The second thing that is entirely achievable is to continuously dehyphenate Ladakh and Jammu from Kashmir Valley. For too long, the Valley has been given the privilege of speaking for the entire state. It doesn’t, and it is high time to show the mirror to the separatists about the culturally parochial and geographically limited nature of the Azadi movement. The right to self-determination cannot begin at the Zojila and end at the Banihal.
Any Kashmiri Muslim following Wahabi philosophy is free to migrate to Pakistan. The territory stays with India like Hyderabad and Junagadh. Period.

It's a surgical strike on the two articles. The 1993 nationwide reservations system will apply to J&K. The 2004 J&K act will apply to residents near IB too not just LOC. Administration demographics will change.
Can more knowledgeable members throw more light on this development?

As per officials, even after the purported strikes in Balakot area of Pakistan on Tuesday - a total of 70 trucks crossed the LoC from both sides. This included a total of 35 trucks from either side of Kashmir, said officials.
this is barter trade.

so the 200% hike in duty may not apply.

soon, the cashmeris will start to include all kinds of other stuff in this barter.

an article on the US Govt helping Pakistan in the construction of roads in J&K in the sixties
In the first week of December 1960, six C-130s from the 322nd Air Division, USAF Europe, based at Evreux, France, arrived at Peshawar. In their mission brief at Peshawar, the US team was informed that that the mission codenamed OPERATION ROAD GRADER had been tasked by the U.S. State Department. They were told that they were assisting in the construction of a runway at Chilas but there was no mention of the Indus Valley Road. The classified mission briefing was operationally thorough, but intentionally sketchy on political details. The team was informed that they were supporting the Pakistanis in their battle against India over the disputed rights to Kashmir and were informed that it was a secret mission which remained highly classified for decades. They were also informed that the operation was classified because of the sensitivity of the situation – a US ally (Pakistan) fighting against a US friend (India) in the disputed territory of Kashmir.

Can anyone provide a list/chronicle of army/police/paramilitary actions over the last 15-20 years, where large numbers of militants and terrorists were killed. I know there are many. Unfortunately, I have recently seen lists of incidents( like https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/j ... 2017-04-27) where Indian security force personnel were killed, over the same time span. One really needs something positive to balance the anger and sadness felt, reading about all these idiotic militant 'successes' provided by media( as they must). The positive side should be shown, and there are lots of those.

Looks like operations all out in Kashmir is in full flow. After removing security cover to hurrirats, NIA raids and now JEI ban. The COIN action is also shifting northwards now

A history of Pakistan’s Jihad for Kashmir by M J Akbar

the article is lengthy and needs time to read. it deals with the history of Pakistan's various attempts at fomenting trouble in J&K. The narrative includes the Pak tradition of naming of operations and operatives on persons and events based on the history of Islam.

Hate to say this but the whole valley is indoctrinated, I'm a frequent musafir to the state and the locals are all out pro-Pak (even the Shias). They are happy with the status quo as they get moolah from tourism. To get a gist of what it's like, speak to one of the CAPF posted there, they fear their backs more than 72 hooris waiting to be dispatched.

The situation will not change overnight my merely lifting 35A/370. Instead the problem will spread south into the refugee camps in Jamboo. What we need is to consolidate the LoC as a potential permanent border and focus on economic change in the state to undercut wahabi funding. A few months ago, I made a pitstop near Jhajjar Kotli for the hungree chuhas and the dogra chef swore he had his mouth taped shut for a month in the summer whilst militants used his house - poor lad had his family held hostage.

Whoa, that's pretty categorical and extreme sounding. All the locals? There are Kashmiri Moslems who are in the Congress, BJP, CPI, Awami League and National Conference( opportunistic perhaps, but moderate) . I do know that more than 1,000 NC workers have been murdered by terrorists in the last 29 years. Those 1000 would have family, friends, associates, supporters in the valley. The same with the other parties. Also, the entire non-Moslem population in J&K, ~30% of the state, is with India and integration. That alone is a significant enough segment, not to abandon. When you add those Kashmiri Moslems who are fairly well disposed toward India, it's a pretty large number.

But one can understand a CRPF officer feeling that way, what they have to face from the militant/separatist section of the population.

I needn't add that if it is really true about the "all", then the anger and resentment toward them in the rest of India is justified. But it's hard to believe.

Psst.. What happened to Omar Abdullah at Peoples Republic of Berkeley? Saw a WhatsApp post praising those who booed him etc, but I suspect that they got the situation totally upside down. Aren't the Booers are PRB all pakis?
