People may be living in rural area, but their work might be in a urban or semi urban location. In a densely populated area like India, the nearest town is barely a cycle ride or a scooter ride away. With improved rural roads and suburban buses, even a bus ride is not too inconvenient.

If services has surpassed agriculture in rural employment, it could partly be because people travel to their nearest town to work from their villagers. I have heard of people taking their autorikshaws from their home in the village to ply in the city and at the end of the day go back to their village.

Economic activity is tracked by area and not by person. Someone working in services in the city ends up part of urban services data and not part of rural data - the data collection doesn’t follow each workers domicile .

The reason agriculture no longer predominates rural GDP is because services and industry are together the largest component of rural GDP. Even farmers know per capita economic output of subsistence farming will never help them escape poverty and they will take another path first chance they get .

CG is present day example of Prithviraj Chauhan debacle. Raman singh never went after his opponents in spite being in power for 15 years. Once he lost, the opposition thrown his photo in dump yard. That's how cruel the real world is. We shouldn't get worked up if BJP loses this election. Things like this happen all the time. Our duty is to observe what is going on. CG may be disaster for BJP. It might be some local faction which withdrew support to raman singh and congress gained it. Many factors affect the votes. We have to monitor such trends.

As for the voter, he never bothers to get down from his cozy bed. Why do anything at all when things are going good? I am sure the % of this type voters reduced in last 5 years. But still majority suffer from this disease.

Overall, this election going to be a good case study in understanding modern India. Everyone is waiting for may 23. We can hardly do anything regarding votes except casting our own votes.

Hanumaduji, the road network is already bringing tremendous changes to rural India. I was watching a Hindi new program called "Bhaiyaji Kahin" the TV anchor was going all over UP meeting common folks and asking questions.

At around 10:15 min in the video he is in a college talking to students. Hear the students answers and you will be pleasantly surprised. Thruout the entire program, there are many people he talks to who all say their journey was 30+ km. Covering that distance in most places in India now takes less than an hour.

Five years ago it use to take 8+ hours to travel to my ancestral village in Tanjore district. Last year it took us 3.5 hours. We left early in the morning performed pooja to our family deity and were back in Chennai for dinner.

In this video, Sam Pitroda saying middle class taxes will go up.
Middle class is barely satisfied with the tax cuts in the last budget and this guy wan'ts to raise taxes.
The Congress has lost the middle class and urban voters a decade back. In Bombay the Congress doesnt even visit or canvas in housing colonies, spending their entire effort in slums encroached on roads, public land and vacant private land. The encroachers are illegal aliens but with impeccable ID documentation compared to tax paying citizens.

So taxing middle class is Congress's way of taking revenge.

Their NYAY scheme is extremely tempting for those its targeted to.

The beneficiaries vastly outnumber the middle class as their fertility rate is 3 to 4 compared to middle class whose fertility rate is 0.5

The beneficiaries give too hoots to national security. Similar schemes tilted the balance in MP, Chattisgarh & Rajasthan elections.

The BJP needs to come up with its own Minimum Income Scheme to counter the Congress. Even if it is unimplementable. Because that segment of voters dont see or understand logic.

I travel quite a bit around North and eastern TN over the weekends and can confirm the impact of PMs gram Sadak yojana and there are boards indicating it as well.

I used to wonder where all the Swach Bharat cess goes until I got to see the documents from our municipality in Sub urban chennai which outlined the plan, process and controls around garbage disposal. The commissioners confirmed that there is large funding coming from center to get this right. A solid waste MGMT facility came up near our area in a short time.

Similar improvements in power supply, railways, mobile telephony. However most of people I speak to attribute it to local Govt and NDAs role is not appreciated enough.

Costs haven't gone up, average salaries have increased but they crib that the cash flows to them have been tightened post GST and Demo. People don't seem to realize that inflation reduction has ensured prices haven't gone up like it did in UPA days. The way they see it seems to be that the Govt had not done enough to reduce prices. While the Govts work has been very good, the communication, emotional connect with people have been ambushed by whatsapp and social media/memes from the opposition which cleverly taps people negative emotion to turn against NDA at least in the southern states

In AP, this time TDP can pick up 10+ seats from Rayalaseema and two Southern coastal districts where YCP fared well in 2014.
Jana Sena, a new third party like PRP before, is wildcard and can cut down the other two parties due to pulling some vote shares.

===
AP MLA seats:
TDP: 120-130
YSRCP: 40-50
Janasena: 2-5

AP MP seats:
TDP: 19-21
YSRCP: 4-6

Vote share:
TDP: 42-44 %
YSRCP: 37-39 %
Jansena: 9-11 %

This is exactly what I was also saying a few posts back. Modi might do all the work but it's unlikely he will get the credit. All the credit will be taken by local leaders while every problem will be attributed back to Mudi and his "suit-boot" ki sarkar.

There’s nothing new in that . It’s been the case throughout this administration. The better question would be what’s an effective manner of messaging a positive story of what’s been done and who deserves the credit .

These middle class guys should go out and vote with their feet. For far too long have they been going out of town and making a weekend of it when polling day comes around. Or they simply lounge around at home entertaining friends and making a party of it.

The slum dwellers have more political power and social clout than these guys because the politicos listen to them. The slum dwellers know how to make their votes count. The dud middle class is just that, a sorry, deluded and easily fooled bunch of politically naive and politically inert mutts who think that they are entitled to a good life just because a lot of them speak in english and wear trousers.

The middle class curses Modi day in and day out for some imagined wrong doings, mouth platitudes about free speech restrictions, and moan about their imagined entitlements.

About 60-70 % of the so called middle class guys don't show up to vote in the locality where I live, whereas the slum dwellers from surrounding areas vote multiple times in our locality. There seems to be some widely known technique to get the "indelible ink" marking off the finger without leaving any trace.

Is India a democracy??, established after a hard won fight to kick the britshits out??

or did we somehow, unknowingly and inadvertently establish a "judicial" empire with all the attendant imperialist trappings of pomp and power?? and a distinct class structure??

Is this how power is accumulated insidiously and a new social order is established?? by surreptitiously bringing in such anti people measures during the election season when the attentions of the public are diverted elsewhere??

Some fact checks:

1. middle class (when I use this term I mean even the upper middle class ) is mostly service class they are in unique boat i.e. survival needs have been take care of hence they have enough time to think about what next so they spend their entire spare time trying to move up the tier ; result ? They won't find time for things like attending rallies , casting a vote .
2. The poor or have nots (be it villagers , those living in slums in urban areas etc) don't have the luxury of thinking too much about the distant future they live on hand to mouth basis so they take whatever little good comes their way however short lived it may be , so a biryani or 650 ml bottle of beer is an incentive enough to attend a rally , a few clothes or cash would then be enough to forgo a day's labour , go out and vote ; now whom will they vote, only God knows.

If you are, let everyone know, middle class will see income tax increase, gst as well to fulfill RG dole plans. There is no more less inflation on goods.

High inflation, more EMI to pay on home loan.

Discontinuation of Ayushman, means poor people pay out of their pocket for hospital.
Offcourse, we are doing all this. The greatest help for us is Ayushman Bharat, seems to have reached most of the homes but not many are aware of what it does. Many have said we voted for Congress in Assembly but Lok Sabha is for Modi only.

A bunch of lies and platitudes but one needs to read between the lines to get the real message of these bigots.

The vatican is a separate country with an embassy in India. The pope appoints bishops and cardinals and as such these people voicing political opinions should be taken as foreigners interfering in the Internal affairs of India. These people owe a direct allegiance to rome and by their law also take orders from rome.

People should stand united to dislodge NDA Government: Church of South India

Even as the BJP is trying woo the Christian communities to get a base in Kerala and Northeast states, the Church of South India (CSI) has taken strong exception to various policies of the NDA.

12th April 2018

KOTTAYAM: Even as the BJP is trying woo the Christian communities to get a base in Kerala and Northeast states, the Church of South India (CSI) has taken strong exception to various policies of the NDA Government at the Centre, including its alleged pro-corporate and anti-poor policies, atrocities against Dalits and the tribals and the hard-line Hindutva agendas.

CSI Moderator Bishop Thomas K Oommen, the supreme head of the church, has published an open letter to the people of the country, asking them to stand united to bring down the government.

The letter quoting Gandhiji’s words on ‘salt march’ that “With this, I am shaking the foundations of the British Empire,” appeared as a symbolic call against the NDA Government.

The CSI which is the second largest Christian denomination in India has a strong presence in South Indian states including Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
According to him, over the past few years, especially during the last four years, people are extremely alarmed at the way the nation is being ruled by the government at the Centre.

“As a citizen of India and as the head of an Indian Church, which belongs to a minority religion, with the majority of its members belonging to the minority communities, I hereby share the fear my people have under the rule of a government that has become a nightmare to the poor and the minorities in India,” he said.

The bishop, who termed the government as a regime of ‘right-wing fundamentalist forces’, said the it has become a danger to the very fabric of the great Sovereign, Socialist, Secular and Democratic Republic. “The Central Government that follows the Hindutva supremacist ideology seems to have consciously discounted all the rights stated in the Preamble of the Constitution,” he said.

“In nexus with the corporates and the multi-national companies, the poor are being plundered. The cry of millions of poor farmers to waive their loans off falls upon the deaf ears of a government that happily waives off loans owed by 50 rich people. The government policies like ‘Demonetisation’ and GST have ruthlessly affected the poor. There is no doubt that the government is pro-corporate and unkind to the poor,” he said.

The head of the church said the chain of recent agitations indicated a new Dalit awakening and the CSI Church not only stands in solidarity with the Dalits fighting for justice and equality, but also condemns all atrocities against them. The Church also demanded the implementation of recommendations of the Ranganath Mishra Commission and the Sachar Committee for reservation to Dalits of Christian and Muslim minority communities.

The cooking gas thing is one of my Scare-Data items. How well does this work? True that everyone with Aadhar basically qualified to get a free cylinder and gas. But the newspaper in desh in December had an item on this: At first re-filling (when one had to pay), only 50% refilled. At second refill, only about 33% of the original. Not really unexpected, but suggests a serious problem with disposable income. Of course I think this is good news. Biogas is free. The problem was storing it. Now with all these empty cylinders that can be overcome. The rest of the system for biogas will pay for itself very rapidly on the savings in having to refill the regular cooking gas (a lot of which is imported). So I would like to see 100% not refilling, but using the cylinders to fill up biogas - and cook for free.
But in the short term, I suspect that many have gone back to picking twigs to burn. Which fits better with the story of why Ekal is trying to expand to 100,000 villages and far beyond.

The other point is this thing about the Demographic Dividend. Someone newly out of extreme poverty and able to connect and vote, is not necessarily going to be happy with the govt. OTOH they are very susceptible to negative propaganda from the Other Side, as in wanting more quickly. Which is why a final exponential spike in conveying the BJP Mantra to the population is absolutely absolutely essential.

The old folks used to vote Congress because
It Is The Party of MKG/JN/IG. Trust Them. Don't believe all these newcomers.
This is why Pumpkin is probably still hard to beat in Rae Barelli (I assume that she is standing there?)
The young used to vote LDF because
Workers of the world, Arise! You have nothing to lose but your chains!
A message that sounds extremely good when one is young.
In the North it was a lot more religion-based. Now all that is inverted. UP actually voted "development". But in Malloostan, religion rules.
So I do hope that the message of Development For All is hammered home in the South especially, and emphasized in the North and East. In the West I suspect that Iron Fist in The Face of Pakistan sells very well.

Is there any credence to this article?

Congress's NYAY may take away 30 seats, says BJP study
A fresh internal analysis done by the party shows that the poll sop announced by Rahul Gandhi, NYAY (Nyuntam Ayay Yojana) which promises Rs 72,000 a year to five crore poorest families, could impact as many as 30 seats for the party.
Electorally, the BJP was emboldened after airstrikes in Pakistan's Balakot when Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets crossed the Line of Control (LoC) and destroyed Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist camps in Pakistan.

After the Balakot airstrikes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi positioned himself as 'desh ka chowkidar', a protector and a strong nationalist.

The airstrikes would have worked to the advantage of the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. The impact was, however, short-lived.

A fresh internal analysis done by the party shows that the poll sop announced by Rahul Gandhi, NYAY (Nyuntam Ayay Yojana) which promises Rs 72,000 a year to five crore poorest families, could impact as many as 30 seats for the party.

"After Balakot, we were looking at 230-240 seats for the BJP but now we are down by almost 30," a senior party official said.
200 seats for real? And even after Balakot, only 240 seats. I guess nationalism & security concerns are not a huge priority for most people.
Sources tell India Today that the BJP has delayed its manifesto announcement and could announce a counter to the NYAY scheme to shift the narrative in its favour.

The messaging on the ground by Congress workers is that while PM Modi will give the poor Rs 6,000 per year, Congress will give them Rs 6,000 a month.

This is a narrative that could become compelling for the voters who have been at the receiving end of drought-like conditions and farmer-centric schemes that have not had the desired impact.

"The voter will have to decide whether to vote for someone who gave them gas cylinders, toilets, homes or someone who is promising them cash," a BJP party worker said. :rotfl:
This time in S Karnataka, the election is on 18th (Thu) & 19th (Good Friday) is a holiday for many institutions. So essentially it is a 4 day long weekend. We will find out how many middle class folks will go on vacation and complain later as Chetak saar has said.

Came across an interesting data point. I was reading Digvijay Singh's wiki and there is a reference to the 2003 Assembly elections for the states of Rajasthan, Chattisgarh & Madhya Pradesh.
Singh won the Raghogarh constituency again in 2003[33] but his party overall was heavily defeated by the BJP, as it also was in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.[34]
This may have been one of the reasons for the optimism for the 2004 Lok Sabha elections. Losing these 3 states last year (2018) is a good reason not to be complacent for GE-2019. It is probably a blessing in disguise.

I personally believe this particular "retard" will wreak havoc and screw up nation big time than anyone else. I worry about it because, it is impossible for me to logically imagine such a person leading our nation (and the joke will be on people voting for him :(( ).

Had a serious discussion on Modi/Naidu/AP screwed on whatsapp groups.

The grants of 25K cr/50K cr, 60K cr (That is 1.3 lakh cr in 3 years) compared to 75K for TN was helpful in demolishing arguments and call out lies of Naidu.

No one who are in strong TDP camp is going to change minds but helped many people who like Modi but worried AP is not getting its due to understand the situation. A lot of people wondered why BJP did not communicate this aggresively.

One guy said if BJP stresses on how much they gave to AP, TG/KA/TN might be angry and CON looters can drive that wedge. Whatever it is, I blame Shah/Modi for not being able to communicate and let the TDP push the narrative of lies. I have published this info earlier too but very difficult to make people data-driven when their internal emotions are based on prejudices/ideology/caste. We are dishonest and irrational people in general and we can't make rational decisions based on data.

I have published this info earlier too but very difficult to make people data-driven when their internal emotions are based on prejudices/ideology/caste. We are dishonest and irrational people in general and we can't make rational decisions based on data.
I don't think AP got the amount/deals/projects it was asking. AP was exception due to split unlike TG/KA/TN where revenue generation is already in place. I do agree that BJP including Modi should have communicating better instead of being pugilist against AP. But that may be design to give TG to TRS and AP to TDP.

Despite at odds, TDP did develop AP well in terms of industrialization, water resources, and government services. It is now banking heavily on them to come to power one more term. Polavaram project on Godavari is major bonus for TDP to seek votes. It benefits 6-7 districts (Kurnool to Visaka) where TDP expected to win at least 10 seats per district.

200 seats for real? And even after Balakot, only 240 seats. I guess nationalism & security concerns are not a huge priority for most people.
Balakot will have some effect to be sure but it can't compete with arithmetic in a lot of seats. UP was BJP's biggest provider in 2014. A lot of seats they won there in 2014 are simply impossible now because of merging of SP/BSP votebank. Similar issues in other places.

Again, I prefer TDP to Jagan. That does not mean I have to accept lies and propaganda unleashed by TDP. No state will get everything they wants. My point is AP got screwed thoroughly by Modi has no basis and was mostly done by TDP /spread by CON/Left supporters. We have enough data to counter that. In the end, I want people to realize not to be too reliant on lies of politicians but look at data. You might still vote for TDP due to your preference/prejudice but at least don't spread lies.

Modi/BJP promised with thunder but didn't deliver to AP - in current digital world all videos are archived. It is simple enough for people to see and TDP didn't have to do much or lie in that aspect. Unlike in the past most people have alternative media to see without relying on any party propagandas. Both BJP and INC are big 0s in AP and they don't high likely get any of 42 MP seats in both Telangana and AP. So lets move on (as a tidbit I am for Congress Mukth Bharat since even BJP wasn't in scene in 80s)

This looks real. Low resolution but definitely RaGa.

Laugh & weep...the latter because the impotent senior members of INC are allowing this buffoon to be a candidate for PM of Republic of India. I would never vote INC, at least in the near future, no matter who they field, but I'm really saddened & concerned by their support (tacit, active or by force) to this idiot.

BJP got best case scenario in BJP dominant states including UP. Getting up to 50 in UP in itself is big achievement. Any dent can't compensated by other states but can be reduced if it wins some in Orissa and West Bengal. No other place is there for new seats except for some new partnership with other parties will help to get 20-40 seats.

In this video, Sam Pitroda saying middle class taxes will go up.
Middle class is barely satisfied with the tax cuts in the last budget and this guy wan'ts to raise taxes.

Because that segment of voters dont see or understand logic.

thats precisely the point, they are the deciding factor. They dont care about national security or china. Get them and you get the elections.

Are you for real!

when did nationalism & security concerns are priority for common people, except the microcosm in Brf, DFI , IF etc

What part of “caste arithmetics” do you don’t understand, which every party follows to garner votes!

I personally believe this particular "retard" will wreak havoc and screw up nation big time than anyone else. I worry about it because, it is impossible for me to logically imagine such a person leading our nation (and the joke will be on people voting for him :(( ).
His dad not as fully retarded as him wreaked havoc after his 5 yrs rule, Khalistan issue, LTTE issue, Shah Bano issue run the economy into ground. Depleted Forex and we have to sell our gold reserves. You can just think what a full retard can do

Yes the lack of expansion in new states is a problem. Even if they improve a lot in Odisha and WB they are starting from almost nothing. It cannot be enough to defray the losses due to united opposition in other states.

It wasn't just UP, the 2014 win was due to the NaMo tsunami absolutely decimating all opposition in several other high population states like Maharashtra, Bihar, MP and Gujarat. Add to that TDP winning AP. That was on the back of immense dissatisfaction with congress government, zero opposition unity and a campaign by NaMo the likes of which India had never seen. It is very very difficult to repeat that performance when you have anti-incumbency and opposition unity working against you. So I'm not sure why people are surprised by BJP themselves projecting between 200-240 seats. Lets hope they reach that because it is possible to form a government with those numbers.
