Thats 179Km of cordoned off territory for Goras and PA to keep the Mango Abdul's out, its 30Km away from Karachi proper in the Sindh Desert.
This video gives a better view, it is not as impressive as that ad, and quite frankly large sections are yet to be built and probably to upkkep such infrastruture will be costly, doubt the township can afford it.

There many townships within India although not on such scale.

bahria township in karachi is around 17,000 acres.

the land was procured from malir (suburb of karachi) devlopment board without any transparency and a case was filed by some stakeholders and individual land owners against bahria.

supreme court of pakistan decided that bahria foundation will pay 450 billion rupees in 3 years back to govt of sindh which will distribute the amount amongst stake holders and aggrieved parties.

Conclusion: In one stroke SC of pakistan regularised all the illegaly aquired land by bahria. Land worth 17,000 acres is a good percentage of land garrisoned by one single group.

Bahria group will pay the supreme court 450 billion rupees but stands to make around 600 billion rupees on sale of plots alone.

Reforms have increased Pakistan’s tax collection, bribe rates: IMF - The Newspaper's Correspondent
WASHINGTON: Performance-based salaries of tax officials in Pakistan have significantly increased tax collection but the government move has also enhanced bribe rates, says a recent study by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The study — “Tackling Corruption in Government”analyses more than 180 countries and finds that more corrupt countries collect fewer taxes, as people pay bribes to avoid them, including through tax loopholes designed in exchange for kickbacks. The study also determined that when taxpayers believe their governments are corrupt, they are more likely to evade paying taxes.

When the food has been served - Shahzada Irfan Ahmed

Public behaviour at a wedding feast is a perfect reflection of how civic sense-deficient we are

I tell the caterer cum chef the number of guests we have invited and dishes we need for an event and wait for his response. He puts his hand in the side pocket of his waistcoat, pulls out a small notebook and a calculator with traces of cooking oil and soot on it.

He does this exercise many times a day, sitting next to cauldrons of burning firewood in his compound. He is so adept that his estimates mostly turn out to be correct. The budget remains within the range he works out.

The guy deftly moves his fingers across the calculator, scribbles something on paper and forwards it to me. I see that he has mentioned quotations depending on the nature of the event and the type of guests invited. This comes as a surprise.

His logic is that if the guests are from within the family there is very little wastage, hence the quotation is the lowest. An event with women guests in majority is also manageable as they waste less food than men. In case the guests are outsiders or first-timers who do not know if there will be second and third servings, the calculations can be all wrong.

The biggest concern that makes you fill your plates to the brim is the fear of having no subsequent servings. The sight of people rushing to the tables like the just-released prisoners of wars (POWs) once the food is served is something we can all relate to.

No doubt this behaviour is reflective of the general lack of civic sense we have in our society. I have been a witness to that on many occasions. People are pushed and a huge stock of food is wasted.

Also read: Inside a shopping mall

On occasions, I myself have done this, filled the plates to capacity and pushed cold drinks and servings of sweet dish under the dining table. I learnt it the hard way when I found children from our family complaining about non-availability of food at a wedding. One of them also received minor burns when someone leapt forward to reach to the paraat (deep steel platter) held above his head by a waiter. My explanation is that I resort to this tactic to avoid such experience. May be others also have a similar story to tell.

Opposition attacks PM Modi after Imran Khan says 'better chance of peace talks if BJP wins' – PTI

NEW DELHI: The Congress and other opposition parties said on Wednesday that a vote for
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is a vote for Pakistan as they seized on Imran Khan's remarks that there may be a better chance of India-Pak peace talks and settling of the Kashmir issue if the BJP is voted back to power.

In a scathing attack, the Congress also said Pakistani premier Imran Khan's remarks reflect that Pakistan has "officially allied" with Modi.

During an interaction with a small group of foreign journalists in Islamabad, Imran Khan had said he believes there may be a better chance of peace talks with India and settling the Kashmir issue if Modi's party BJP wins the general elections.

Khan said other parties would be afraid of right-wing backlash in case of a settlement on the Kashmir issue.

Congress's chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala launched a blistering attack on Modi over Khan's comments.

"Pak has officially allied with Modi! A vote for Modi is a vote for Pakistan!" Surjewala tweeted.

"Modi ji, first there was love for Nawaz Sharif and now Imran Khan is your dear friend," he added in a tweet in Hindi.

The truth is out in the open, Surjewala claimed.

Prime Minister Modi has been accusing the Congress of being supportive of Pakistan's narrative following the Balakot air strikes. He has also slammed opposition leaders for asking questions on the strike, saying such statements were helping Pakistan.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury lashed out at Prime Minister Modi over Khan's remarks, saying now it was known who Pakistan wants as PM.

"Pakistan has been the only issue of Modi's election campaign, where he has scurrilously tried to link it to opposition. Now we know who Pakistan actually wants as PM, the only Indian PM to have invited ISI to a military base, and the only one who went to Pakistan uninvited," he said.

"We have serious concerns about foreign governments influencing our democratic election process. Last year, it was reported that ISI wants Modi as PM. NowPakistani PM says it," Yechury said.

Aam Aadmi Party convenor and Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal also seized on Khan's remarks, saying if Modi wins in the general election, crackers will be burst in Pakistan.

"Why does Pakistan want Modi ji to win. Modi ji should tell the country how deep are his relations with Pakistan. All Indians should know that if Modi wins, crackers will be burst in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s debt pile to swell to 84.1% of GDP by 2023
ISLAMABAD: The debt pile that Prime Minister Imran Khan would leave behind at the end of his five-year term will be equal to 84.1% of the size of Pakistan’s economy – far higher than the gross public debt at the end of the PML-N government, suggests a new report of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Pakistan Army Private Limited.

There are four power centres in Pakistan. Sitting atop the other three is the military, which controls one-third of Pakistan’s economy and almost all its terror groups. The other three centres of quasi-power are the government, the judiciary and the mullahs. The media is powerless. Civil society has no voice.

The Pakistani army is obsessed with India for one overriding reason: it justifies the army’s indispensability to the country and is good for business. The Pakistani army is run like a private limited company. Indian strategists working on counter-terror operations make the mistake of thinking that Pakistan’s “deep state” is responsible for Islamabad’s malignant behaviour.

There is no deep state in Pakistan. The army is the deep state and its tactics are open, even brazen. The Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) makes no secret of its subversive role. Its public relations division (ISPR) is run by Major General Asif Ghafoor, who deals daily in Goebbelsian propaganda.

The Pakistani army’s Fauji Foundation owns businesses across Pakistan. In a written reply to Pakistan’s Senate in 2016, a glimpse of the army’s business holdings was revealed. As Dawn reported: “There were nearly 50 projects and units functioning in the country under the administrative control of Fauji Foundation, Shaheen Foundation, Bahria Foundation, Army Welfare Trust (AWT) and Defence Housing Authorities (DHAs).

According to the details provided in the reply, eight DHAs were established in major cities. These DHAs — mostly created through ordinances — are in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi-Islamabad, Multan, Gujranwala, Bahawalpur, Peshawar and Quetta. Besides, there are 16 projects/units functioning under the AWT, 15 under the Fauji Foundation and 11 under the Shaheen Foundation.”

Projects under the Fauji Foundation include plants manufacturing everything from cement and fertiliser to energy and cereal. The Fauji Foundation itself claims on its website that it runs 18 industries. Quite apart from official holdings, the Pakistani army controls benami land and foreign bank accounts.

The country’s defence budget at $10 billion is 3.5 per cent of Pakistan’s GDP —nearly double India’s (1.8 per cent) as a ratio of GDP. Few countries spend more on defence as a percentage of GDP than Pakistan. China’s defence budget is 1.4 per cent of GDP. A significant portion of Pakistan’s defence budget is siphoned off by the army’s top brass. There is little oversight.

To keep the defence budget high and the illicit money machine ticking over, the Pakistani army needs an enemy. India fits the bill. The Pakistani army is not interested in Kashmir. It uses the state to prosecute a low-cost, low-intensity proxy conflict with India, deploying its terrorist arms to attack India and keep tensions simmering just below boiling point.

A key part of this strategy is to maintain a facade of seeking talks with India. For the Pakistani military, talks and terror go together. Structured dialogue with India gives Islamabad respectability in the eyes of the international community, diluting the impression that it is a pariah state. But the Pakistani army has no intention of allowing talks, when they do take place, to actually succeed in resolving the Kashmir issue. A resolution would end the conflict. The army’s role in Pakistan would diminish. So would the Fauji Foundation’s fortunes.

India’s peace lobby comprises several well-meaning activists(and more then a few willing jaichands, especially the fake liberal and fake secular journalists). The Pakistani army’s civil society proxies engage in endless track two meetings with them. The purpose: build a bridge to eventually open a dialogue between India and Pakistan at the political level. Meanwhile, the Pakistani army’s terror proxies — Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen — launch periodic attacks on Indian targets to ensure that the low-intensity conflict continues.

The Indian Air Force’s Balakot strike deep inside Pakistan changed the low-cost terror business model that the Pakistani army had perfected over years. Suddenly, the cost had risen. The loss of hundreds of terrorists and several Pakistani army officers in Balakot was just one blow.

An equally punishing one could be lying around the corner: blacklisting by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). The Paris-based body monitors money laundering and terror financing globally. The Pakistani establishment engages copiously in both. If the FATF blacklists Pakistan, it could severely damage that country’s already fragile economy.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pakistan’s foreign minister, was so rattled by the possibility of blacklisting that he told journalists at a recent press conference in Lahore: “The Foreign Office is calculating the annual loss if Pakistan is pushed in the blacklist by the FATF as India is lobbying for this.”

Indian foreign policymakers have been ambivalent over Pakistan. Diplomatic relations remain unchanged. A private member’s bill to declare Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism has been shelved. Cross-border trade continues as before, notwithstanding the withdrawal of Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status. Even the ludicrous retreat ceremony at the Wagah border post between BSF jawans and Pakistani Rangers goes on unabated daily. Pakistan craves equivalence with India. Indian policymakers give it far too many opportunities to claim false equivalence.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani army keeps a beady eye on India, obsessing over every Pakistani rupee it can extract from the longest geopolitical fraud it has pulled off for decades through its proxy war of terror against India. The new Indian government, whichever alliance forms it, must end the charade that enriches the Pakistani army at the cost of Indian lives.

I think Pakistan is running into issues getting IMF loan approved. Publicly they are maintaining that it's almost there and that IMF has relaxed its conditions. I think they are lying. FATF clearance is needed for IMF loan but it looks like Pakistan will make it to the black list which explains desperate attempts like Imran Khan telling NYT that Pakistan army created armed militias and now there is no use for them. Also 3 US senators recently opposed IMF loan to Pakistan. Imran Khan is visiting China this month. May be to get another loan from Chinese since they are not sure IMF loan will come through.

Pakistan pulls out of US-Taliban talks in Doha - Kamran Yousaf

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will not be attending talks between the United States and Afghan Taliban scheduled in the Qatari capital Doha later this month, the foreign office spokesperson announced on Thursday, in a development apparently indicating a trust-deficit among the stakeholders.

Pakistan, which brokered the on-going peace talks, attended the previous sessions both in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Doha. “Pakistan will not be part of the next round of talks between the US and Taliban in Doha in April,” Foreign Office Spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal told reporters at a weekly press briefing when asked whether Pakistan was going to attend the next round.

“There will also be an Intra-Afghan dialogue in Doha on 14-15 April 2019, organised by Russia,” the spokesperson added. Although, Pakistan will not be part of the coming talks, the spokesperson made it clear that Islamabad had supported the peace talks in the past and would continue playing its facilitating role for durable peace in Afghanistan.
Dr Faisal, however, did not elaborate as to why Pakistan was staying away from the planned talks in Doha.

Observers believe that the recent reaction both from Kabul and Washington to Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement suggesting an interim set up in Afghanistan could be the reason behind Pakistan staying away from the peace talks.

Speaking to a group of journalists, Prime Minister Khan had reportedly proposed the formation of an interim government in Afghanistan in order to break the stalemate in talks. The statement invited strong reaction from US chief negotiator Zalmay Khalilzad as well as the Afghan government, which called back its ambassador from Islamabad as protest.

The US ambassador to Kabul went on to school Prime Minister Khan on diplomacy, something that drew even stronger reaction from Human Rights Minister Shireen Mazari, who called the US envoy a “little pygmy”.

The foreign office clarified the prime minister’s reported remarks that helped eased the diplomatic hiccup. However, days later Khan reignited the debate by saying at a public gathering in Jamrud that he had given “brotherly advice” to Afghanistan. The Afghan government summoned the Pakistani envoy in Kabul to lodge a formal protest over Khan’s remarks.

The US and Taliban representatives have been engaged in extensive talks since last few months with reports suggesting that the two sides are close to a draft agreement. Talks have so far focused on the timeline for the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and firm guarantees by the Taliban that terrorists will not be allowed to use Afghan soil. However, deadlock on the inclusion of Afghan government in the peace talks still persists.

More info on Pulwama

Meanwhile, the spokesperson told reporters that Pakistan handed over a further set of questions to India regarding the Pulwama attack. The questionnaire was handed over to the Indian deputy high commissioner, who was called in to the foreign office on Thursday.

Islamabad recently informed India that based on its “preliminary findings” no linkages had so far been established between the Pulwama attack and Pakistan. The foreign office, however, said that Pakistan was willing to cooperate with India if it had any “actionable evidence”.

Responding to a question, the spokesperson reiterated that Pakistan had “credible intelligence” regarding the imminent threat as mentioned by Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi. “Any threat to Pakistan would beget a befitting reply. I would like to reiterate that Pakistan, however, believes in peace and dialogue and not war,” he added.

By this time the fate of Mirpur had been sealed - it was torched by the raiders the same day. About 400 soldiers and 10,000 refugees managed to escape, and reached Jhangar. The Pathans killed several hundred soldiers and civilians, capturing hundreds of women who were taken away as war booty. Many of them were sold for 150 rupees after being paraded naked through the streets of Jhelum by the exultant Pathan tribesmen.

With voting rights of a little over 15%, USA has the veto rights on any IMF loan being sanctioned to Pakistan. USA can also influence Saudi and UAE not to give further loans/breathing space to pakistan. That leaves China as the only dalal that paki whore can run to and indeed charsi is going there vaseline jar in hand on April 28th. IMF, World Bank urge caution with China loans

The rising influence of lending by China to developing nations is increasingly under the spotlight amid concerns the growing debt burden and onerous conditions could sow the seeds of a crisis.

The global development lenders, the International Monetary Fund and World Bank, are calling for more transparency about loan amounts and terms, and cautioning governments against relying too much on debt.

At the Spring meetings of the institutions on Thursday, newly-installed World Bank President David Malpass warned that “17 African countries are already at high risk of debt distress, and that number is just growing as the new contracts come in and aren't sufficiently transparent.”

Read: China acknowledges it’s extending financial help to Pakistan

And IMF chief Christine Lagarde said the high debt levels and number of lenders, who do not all conform to international norms, also complicate any future efforts to restructure a country's debt.

“Both the bank and the IMF are working together in order to bring about more transparency and be better able to identify debt out there, terms and conditions, volumes and maturities,” she said at a news briefing.

“We are constantly encouraging both borrowers and lenders to align as much as possible with the debt principles” set by international organizations such as the Paris Club and Group of 20.

An IMF report issued this week warned that rising debt levels around the world — government and corporate borrowing — poses a risk to the global economy.

And Lagarde said, “It's clear that any debt restructuring programs going forward in the years to come will be more complicated than debt restructuring programs that were conducted 10 years ago, simply because of the multiplicity of lenders, and the fact that not all public debt is offered by members of the Paris Club.”

Debt drags down economies

Malpass acknowledged that lending can help economies grow “but if it's not done in a transparent way, with good outcome from the build-up of debt, then you end up having it be a drag on economies.”

He cautioned that “history is full of those situations where too much debt dragged down economies.”

The G20 has called on the two Washington-based lenders to collect data on debt to get a better handle on the amounts and loan conditions.

“I'll be reporting to the G20 on the progress during our meetings coming up this week, and the keys are to have transparent disclosure of the debt as it is being created, and also then have the focus on good outcomes in terms of quality projects,” Malpass said.

“This is critical for poor countries as they try to move forward to have the projects associated with good quality programs and full disclosure of the debt.”

China also has a growing role as a donor to the World Bank fund that provides low-cost loans to the poorest countries.

PTI govt's mandate (from military) is NOT to improve economy short-term, it is instead

1. Conduct local body elections, and devolve all decision making powers to local bodies and give them all custody of funds. In one stroke this wipes out relevance of political parties like PPP and PML(N) from politics.

2. To this end of making PPP and PML(N) irrelevant, launch corruption investigations against popular leaders in following manner.

a. A charge or allegation is levelled against a popular leader in a lower court like sessions court or NAB court.

b. Onus on disproving accusation lies solely with the accused. The lower courts can initiate suo-moto cases without shred of evidence.

c. Arrest the politician on flimsy charges and keep him in jail for 2 months and after wheels of justice slowly churns and an appeal is filed by accused in higher court already a couple of months have passed and politicians reputation has been tarred. Higher court imvariably dismisses case on lack of evidence.

d. Rinse & Repeat : After couple of months, launch another corruption charge and anothee fake case. This can go on as long as establishment needs.

3. After politicians are wiped out and made irrelevant, build case for presidential system of govt. This has been pet project for military establishment since musharraf. It was a pet project for musharraf. In this way all headache of governance has been transferred to local bodies. And all the big projects and big deals can be managed without messy political interference.

To this effect Imran Khan's PTI govt has been tasked with charge of tarring all political parties in opp and all populist leaders. And prepare ground for Presidential System like Egypt, Turkey,

Bailout package with IMF almost worked out: Asad
WASHINGTON: Pakistan and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have — more or less — reached an understanding on a package for bailing out the country’s ailing economy, says Finance Minister Asad Umar.
What does 'almost worked out' or 'more or less' mean? The answer is in a report in another newspaper.

Disclosure of Chinese loans key hurdle to IMF deal
The IMF’s conditions for signing the deal with Pakistan include sharing details of Chinese loans, increasing the power tariff, adjustments in the exchange rate and fiscal policies and imposition of taxes. These have been the sticking points since November last year, said government sources.

However, the media has primarily remained focused on the conditions about the exchange rate policy and electricity prices.
The IMF has not backed out from its demand of a complete disclosure of all types of financial cooperation between Pakistan and China, sources in the finance ministry told The Express Tribune.
Later in the same month, the finance minister said the US had only 16.5% voting rights and the decision on Pakistan’s request would be taken by the IMF’s executive board with a 51% majority vote.

As usual the PTI Govt is lying and giving false hopes that IMF deal is almost done. Looks like there are some major unresolved issues.

In his remarkable book on Growth and Inequality published recently, eminent economist Hafiz Pasha has referred to Section 51 and 52 of the Second Schedule of the Income Tax Ordinance as an example of built-in inequality. It allows the army chief and corps commanders special tax treatment.

TSP received $2bn infusion on Monday from China. KSA extended period of credit for oil purchases. It just shows you what sort of impact Operation Balakot and the counter terror operations on LOC has had.

Pak foreign office has issued a set of questions back to GoI on Pulwama. TSP drama continues...

I suspect GoI will start to raise the heat once again - more CAP and counter terror operations on the anvil as weather improves so will options.

Meanwhile IK and Bajwa are having regular meetings to prepare how to handle the situation. After taking a beating on LoC both by overt and covert means.

Expect an increase in op tempo deep inside enemy territory...
