Not mil but an example of how creating a local platform (no matter how mundane) could be expanded to many roles.
The ARJ-21 is a pretty obsolete piece of work (POS) based on the 40 year MD-80/DC-8. But it is theirs and it flies so they are making business jet out of it. Once they get a domestic high-bypass turbofan, we'll be seeing mil variants.

^^^ LoL. The chini general public looks much happier to get onboard . . . and take lots of pictures. Good idea or no?
But the impression is good. Just as good as the Ayushmann/Raghavan thriller AndhaDhun currently making 300 crores on the chini box office.
Eh, they are far more accepting of us than we are of them to be perfectly honest. At least at the cultural level.

Interesting thread on the Varyag/Liaoning wreck:

It looks like they sat on the hulk for seven years -- without doubt taking it apart and studying it -- and then rebuilt the thing in three once the J-15 program matured.

I'll add that the first J-15 landed on the refurbished russkie aviation cruiser on November 25, 2012.Dragon Wong

PLAAF is rotating H-6 bombers through Tibet.
Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
Well technically they don't need to be based in Tibet. They're not quick reaction aircraft anyway. They can fly out of Chengdu and launch missiles from east of burma. Its a show-of-force type deployment but it will mean we will have to take it seriously and plan for it.
Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
^^^ Yes, a show of force but also a bluff. The H-6 is ubiquitous around Japan and Taiwan carrying heavy loads of cruise mijjiles. But those take off from sea level. We never see them over Tibet at all, never mind with loads. There are physical reasons why not. So I'll wait until we photograph one on our borders like the Japanese Defense forces do on a daily basis (see posts above.) Otherwise, it is a bark not a bite.

The Z-9 is a licensed copy of the Dauphin. There are many variants of this clone. And they can export it.
Why are our ToT always so restrictive? One variant onlee and no exporting. What the chini negotiated with the Frenchies on the Dauphin is actual and real "transfer of technology." They were sold this tech for perpetuity and can do what they want with it -- alter it, build endless varieties and numbers of it, sell it and in short own it.

The chini navy is retiring a large number of the Type 053 frigates (replaced by over 30 Type 054As.)
Some of them will be coming to the neighborhood.
The PLAN pennants 521 and 522 will be going to Bangladesh. These are 053 H3 blocks. Bangladesh already received two H2 variants in 2014:
Former 542 was repainted a foreign pennant P625 which could be for Sri Lanka though other reports say Cambodia.

Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
4 SSN's while impressive is not actually that high a number given how many SSN's China needs to modernize its Navy. The US yards have a capacity of around 3+1 even at this moment (3 SSN's a year within current investment profile with 1 additional that is possible if OEMs invest more to modernize). The FY20 defense budget actually moves them up to 3 Virginia buys a year so those would be delivered in the same fiscal year, down the road. There are also plans to deliver 2 SSN's and 1 SSBN in the same year. Part of this is to recapitalize capability that is outgoing because the LA class was procured at such high numbers but part of it is also to cover the deficit in SSN's in particular because the US virtually took a submarine buying holiday in the 90s.
China probably needs to crank out SSN's at 5-8 a year to be able to catch up in quantity given its global ambitions.

Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
That factory is a new capacity on top of what they have now and since they ape the Yoo Ess relentlessly, they'll likely end up with a SSN dominant fleet?
For us, the danger is not chini-crewed SSNs which I suspect that they will unlikely to have any to spare outside the Western Pacific. Not with the USN owning 60 and with more Virginias coming.
The real danger is their SSKs will be sold (or gifted) to every tinpot around the IOR as SSNs begin to form the bulk of the PLAN's sub fleet. Pakiland (of course) and Bangladesh already have chini subs in service or on order. Thailand too.

Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
We predicted in this thread that with Trump's trade war clobbering their export engine, the chicoms needed go to their MIC for jobs.
It is now borne out by the market.
https://www.scmp.com/business/china-bus ... -trade-war
Bad because we will see even more ships and aircraft as they crank up to employ people.
A particularly big disadvantage for us is if their private sector gets a bigger and bigger share of their MIC while we keep ours nearly all PSU. The private sector involvement will lead to efficiency and innovation with firms pitching prototypes from their own funds -- ala the FC-1, FC-31 and CH-4/5 drones sold all over the Middle East.
It is now borne out by the market.
https://www.scmp.com/business/china-bus ... -trade-war
Good and bad. Good because this is making Cheen more like the Soviets who depended on their MIC for jobs and we know what happened to them. LolCorporate China hit by worst earnings on record in 2018, as trade war bite
Technology among sectors worst hit, but construction materials, defence make gains
...
Military enterprises were also booming, with the industry’s profit rising 20 per cent in 2018. China’s defence budget for 2019 increased by 82.9 billion yuan to 1.19 trillion yuan, an acceleration over the 62.6 billion yuan increase in 2018.
Analysts said they expected the sector to benefit from a relaxation in regulation by Beijing meant to spur private investment in defence and deepen reforms in state-owned enterprises.
“Mobilising private capital to develop advanced technologies for potential military use can help modernise the sector, ” said Shen Fancheng, an analyst with Shenzhen-listed China Great Wall Securities.
“Developing military technology with self-owned intellectual property rights has a particular significance against the backdrop of the US-China trade war,” he said, recommending that investors focus on Changsha Jingjia Microelectronics, which manufactures graphics chips for military use, and Shenzhen H&T Intelligent Control, which produces intelligent controller products.

It looks like their CATOBAR is taking shape in Shanghai. The dock(?) and adjoining facility are new. It seems they are building out a new section of the yard for carriers. It is owned by CSSC, a SOE (state operated enterprise). Their first homegrown carrier was built at an existing dock in Dalian which belongs to another chini psu, CSIC.

every large defence vendor around the world - the american titans , EADS, BAE, Thales, Saab defence, Sukhoi, Uralzavod are quasi govt type of enterprises and their only clients are home govts and export govts.
the NASA and ESA are also quasi govt.
govt ownership in itself is not a surety of bad performance if enough autonomy is given , and management is performance driven.

Just a data point that I feel is important... I keep getting WhatsApp fwds with TikTok videos. Most of the videos are by Chinese and some videos are from Indians (apparently India is the second largest user of TikTok after China). I personally find level of creativity and artistry of Chinese origin videos far exceed those originating out of India. The Chinese videos showcase feats of great deterity, talent, improvisation, interesting machines and superlative performance. Whereas Indian videos are typically showcasing people making a fool of themselves for entertainment.
Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
Most of the videos of chinese origin are considered staged and their popularity is manufactured. Similar allegations exist for lots of Russian origin online videos. Indians are free people who can make an ass of themselves and is under no obligation to impress or entertain you or the world by being circus freaks. As is the case with most other mature countries.tandav wrote:Just a data point that I feel is important... I keep getting WhatsApp fwds with TikTok videos. So here is a warning: The entire premise on which TikTok was banned by GoI was that it was being used for chinese propaganda. Dont bring TikTok clap trap into BRF and make such sweeping generalizations.
Re: China Military Watch - Sept' 2016
^^^ Some of that stuff is real. Cheen has a pretty outrageous entertainment industry designed to keep 1.2B people from rioting out of boredom. Think about this: Avengers' Endgame will gross over $600M in Cheen during the midst of a trade war with the Yoo Ess. Staid commie propaganda just can't do the trick. Andhadhun made 300 crores (over $40m) which is 3 times what it made in India.
You can find out a lot about Cheen society through its video platforms. Wall Street and the MNCs use them to tap the chini market.
Now in keeping with this thread, the commies are deadly afraid that Cheen is becoming a soft and effeminate nation that is partially created by its acceptance of foreign cultural imports, especially from Korea.
https://www.vice.com/en_in/article/pajp ... male-youth
There are also a lot of homosexuality now being revealed on the less formal internet entertainment system unlike over-airwaves traditional television.
All this along with the one child policy leading to spoiled little emperors contribute to a remarkably weak recruiting population for soldiers.
