The importance of the LCA programme as the flagship for "Make in India" was stressed here on Friday by Air Officer Commanding-in Chief, Air Marshal Suresh of the Southern Area Command, who called for brainstorming on various aspects of its operational viability.

Speaking after inaugurating the first LCA TEJAS operators conference at the Air Force Station at Sulur on the outskirts, Suresh impressed upon the participants, the need to deliberate at length on further improvements in avionics, radar and other systems for future programme like LCA Mk IA & II and AMCA, while working on Tejas FOC and Mk1. He expressed confidence that those present at the conference, "the finest brains in military aviation", would utilise the wealth of experience to make further versions of LCA into one of the finest combat platforms in the world.

The road map and timelines for Tejas capability enhancement and measures to step up its production were also discussed at the conference, an official release said here.

India Agrees To Acquire Palm Oil, MiG-29 From Malaysia To Secure Tejas Deal
https://swarajyamag.com/insta/india-agr ... tejas-deal

India is among the five contenders competing for the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF) intended purchase of 30 light combat aircraft over the next 10 years. New Delhi has put forth its indigenously developed Tejas fighter jet for the RM (Malaysian Ringgit) 36 billion (~ $8.7 billion) deal.

Other aircraft that are on offer are believed to be the F-50 of Korea Aerospace Industries (South Korea), YAK-130 by Irkut Aerospace (Russia), JF-17 Thunder (Pakistan) and Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master (Italy), reports Free Malaysia Today.

According to the report, the political consideration will be the main factor behind Malaysia’s purchase of the aircraft.

Despite heavy lobbying from Pakistan, Malaysia is unlikely to buy the JF-17 as the Kuala Lumpur reportedly intends to link the deal to purchases of palm oil.

India, which is one of the largest buyer of Malaysian palm oil, could easily meet the country’s demand. Besides, New Delhi, in a bid to boost its chances for the deal, has also offered to buy the retired MiG-29 jets from Malaysia.

According to the report, the RMAF currently operates a mixed fleet of supersonic fighters and multi-role combat aircraft, comprising 13 Russian-made MiG-29s (now retired) and 18 Sukhoi SU-30MKM “Flanker”, and eight American Boeing F/A-18D Hornet.
But why the Mig-29?

Because it's the only aircraft which flies on palm oil 8)

Jokes aside, it's modern business practice to entice a customer by taking away their used stuff which they are replacing. Boeing buys back old Airbus aircraft from its customers, and vice versa. As for the aircraft, they can be used for spares if not for actual flying since I don't think Mig-29s are going to be retired anytime soon.

If above is true, this is a welcome news. Shows the shift in GOI attitude, that they mean business with the export orders now. Leveraging geopolitical and economical tools to het export orders. Good to see proactive work from GOI. I am still not too hopeful on LCA getting final orders. But its a good practice run for the whole GOI machinary for future.

This RMAF deal leads me to think that Mk1A is delayed. More time is required to close the configuration and testing. RMAF order would keep the production line running.

If the report is accurate. Then India has finally arrived on the scene.

A win win solution for both sides.

Anyone knows if the LSP2 with Uttam has flown? It was suppose to fly in March-April, based on comments during AI19.

As per flight test records aircraft had flown after AI-19, but the Uttam hadn't been tested till beginning of March at least. Unaware of status afterwards.

I dont know the reasons for not placing more orders. I tend to trust the system by default. They are making the move to keep the production line going which is a good thing.

$8.7 billion for 30 aircraft makes it over $250 million approximately for each aircraft.
Is that not a bit too much cost for LCA?

If IAF had accepted LCA and production was ordered in, say, 2002 then today we would have 200LCA rather than relying on Mig-21s. But ....

Mk1A: I would be ecstatic, if it is certified by 2021. Looking tough with scope creep.
Mk2: first flight around 2021-22

Tejas features an Automatic Pilot (Initiated) Built-In Test (PBIT) with a slight push of a button which initiates a sequence of tests to check onboard systems are working properly or not. The whole process takes about a minute after which a green GO signal is flashed.

Remember the video where the Pilot(?) talks about this particular feature.

50% offset. And we get significant diplomatic support from France.

On the other hand I think the only Tejas that will be sold will be the Mk1A and we could possibly be looking additional production lines forming up.

Let them. Let somebody else disect the aircraft as well. The faster we sell, the faster future variants come up. The faster people are behind the curve that you are on.

To give you a comparison, Mk1A is yet to find MoD sanction!

+ 1000000

An additional unrelated point.

Once the country is in the business not selling military equipment. R&D and the cost of establishing an assembly line are amortized over a longer production run.

Making the product cheaper for home country.

So win win for all.

^^^ Yup. Have the Tejas in the market and begin the virtuous feedback loop -- sales --> revenue/consumer feedback --> upgrade/new product.

Only issue is with the palm oil. That is a decidedly unhealthy hydrogenated fat!

We have taken Su-30 MKI to Nellis and beyond.
We have closely trained with Singapore F-16s.

Don't confuse joy ride the enemy's equipment with the ability to deploy 4 squadrons of Tejas Mk1.

On other hand
US does not permit PAF F-16s to exercise with the Chinese Air Force.
Lets become and strong and then make demands.
i.e lets sell first.

coming back to power of Modi is a great news for LCA program. The previous congress govt for 10 years at best ignored tejas programme. Now TEJAS will be 100% succeed. Modi will ensure that before end of his 2nd term at least tejas mk1a will start rolling out of assembly lines and entering squadrans.

768 TRMs - each TRM arranged in modules of 4x TRMs, at 10W each.

*if* the cooling system allows you to use it at full rating, that's 7.68 Kw, 20% duty cycle would give you Pav of 1.5 Kw, 10% would be 768 W.

And this is merely our first gen fighter AESA based on GaAs MMICs.

Sigh, when will Uttam have it's first flight.. The first flight will be a great PR for LCA.

I am guessing the MFD and probably some avionics will require major changes to support the multitude of functions a AESA radar provides.

Ex: Simultaneous air and ground search will need two screens for display!

The ADA site(Achievements -> Flight news current year) shows an increment in the count of LSP2 recently.

IIRC Uttam was to flown on LSP2.

3 screens. Then there are also the HUD, and HMDS. No dearth of displays!

Uttam would have already flown on LSP2.
