With the USN not building any steam catapult ships anymore, and the French and the Brits not having that it leaves the IN with the only option of developing steam cats. in house. It, in my opinion, would not be a wise decision for a ship that isn't likely to see an operational patrol till the late 2030's and expected to be in service till the 2060s.
The French are indeed looking to develop a new aircraft carrier to replace the CDG and based on the QE class design. Preliminary studies going on.
Like I said, if they ever get the nod and have a program of record with actual funding attached to it (beyond studies) then it will most likely have EMALS. In fact, that is fairly set in stone given they are unlikely to go for a Ski ramp and unassisted take offs.

Goes to show that having a terrestrial carrier is the best option.

India is the largest and best placed terrestrial carrier in the IOR.

But I still want a 65K ton CATOBAR!

Pretty safe to assume that the next French carrier (or the next CDG upgrade) would include JPALS.

Kochi to be home for survey ship INS Investigator
https://english.manoramaonline.com/news ... r.amp.html
Kochi: Indian Naval Ship (INS) Investigator (J 15) will now be based at Kochi.

According to Southern Naval Command (SNC) officials, INS Investigator, a hydrographic survey ship, is back after completing a six-year stint with the Andaman and Nicobar Command.

On her return, she will be now placed under the Flag Officer-Commanding-in-Chief, SNC and re-based at Kochi.

It was a majestic view on Wednesday, when INS Investigator entered the Kochi Canal. She was welcomed by Rear Admiral R J Nadkarni, Chief of Staff, SNC at South Jetty.

Commanded by Commander R Abdul Rahiman, the ship has 20 officers and 200 sailors as part of the crew.

The INS Investigator is the fourth ship in the Sandhayak class and is capable of preparing marine charts and electronic maps for the Electronic Chart Display and Information System.

Commissioned into the Indian Navy January 11, 1990, the 1900-tonne ship is built at Garden Reach Ship Builders, Calcutta. It is fitted with the state-of-the-art survey equipment, including a Deep Sea Multibeam Echosounder, Single Beam Echosounders, Side Scan Sonars and modern survey software suites.

While on missions, INS Investigator carries four 9.2 meter Survey Motor Boats (SMBs) for undertaking survey in shallow waters.

The ship also has an integral Chetak helicopter for supporting survey operations. Her primary role is to undertake hydrographic surveys for the production of navigation charts. In her secondary role, the ship can be converted into a 40-bed hospital ship during war or other contingencies,” says an SNC Spokesperson.

It has an operating theater to undertake medical emergencies during her missions. With her and her predecessors having a surveying history of about three centuries, INS Investigator is popularly called as the ‘The Legend.’

Navy says INS Investigator is the sixth in the history of Indian Hydrography to carry this illustrious name. In the last 29 years, she has carried out numerous hydrographic surveys in Indian as well as in foreign waters.

Powered by two diesel engines, the ship is fitted with a gun for self defence.
Very insightful.

this enables a new paradigm.
larger ships carrying radar, supported and surrounded by smaller (and invisible) missile carriers (size of CG ships).
The missiles will be launched and guided by the mother ship.

I'd think a distributed network of smaller sensors on smaller ships will be stealthier and give wider area protection. Large radar on a capital ship will make it vulnerable.

Hmmm, Admiral Singh will be getting IAC 1 Vikrant, P-15B destroyers, P-17A frigates (which are the size of destroyers), Scorpenes and with luck four LPDs. This is a brand new Navy that is more powerful than any other IN chief had. How could it possibly be "aging" and "shrinking"?

I don't see extraordinary retirement of earlier assets so no shrinking. The pace of construction is slow but all those vessels will eventually enter service under his reign.

Only wrench is the repeated MoD dismissals of the Navy's IAC 2 proposals.

But overall, the Navy future looks bright. Maybe Cmde Rai making a plea for more budget. We see USN commanders crying poverty when the Amreekis spend on its navy than the rest of the world combined.

Chinese naval forces can be organized as follows. India has a longer coastline and must provide security to the IOR region. Our inability to control the oceans lead to our colonization and even today there is quite an apathy towards developing a more robust blue water response.

1) PLAN : front line assets operating Submarines, Aircraft carriers, Destroyers etc
2) PLA Marines: Green water with frigates and Landing Ships, Helicopter carriers, Amphibious tanks
3) PLA Coast Guard: Has been deputed with Cutters larger than most frigates ~12000 tons
https://thediplomat.com/2017/05/china-c ... china-sea/
4) Chinese fishing boat navy (literally 1000s of small boat that are networked with the PLA and obey PLA orders and function as a grey water force): These are the most potent sea denial weapons that PLA has in its arsenal.

I would seriously like to see a second Vikrant class ordered skiing with some fast bombers. This might be the cheapest way to get a long reach and cover the IOR.

These are good only for bullying small neighbours. If any situation escalates, one warning shot will send them flying back to Xi, or down to the bottom of the ocean. Fishing boats, like a swarm of drones, is more a nuisance than a meaningful weapon.

No, it is a massive weapon during the 99.9% of the time when there is no war. In fact, the same could be said of their CG and regular Navy. All of them can be easily sent down to the bottom. But who is willing to fight with a nuclear power? No one had started a war with them in 40 years and it looks like none will want to in the future -- save for maybe Unkil.

Safe to say that all of Cheen's forces are designed to operate during peace time to overwhelm gray zones and global commons. They are not a warrior race but the danger is they have perfected the strategy of short rice-eaters -- outbuild and outencrouch during peace while avoiding actual fighting at all cost.

It would also make sense to avoid overt and unnecessary confrontation, because sooner or later it may well lead to a conflict. But it seems they are banking on the war never actually coming to their doorsteps.

Argentina had the balls to send one of the Chinese Fishing Trawlers to bottom of the ocean. I am amazed to see the audacity of Chinese !! They have been stealing fishes thousands of miles away from their home... !!

Fishing boats/trawlers can be quite useful with the right tactics, like the millenium challenge exercise showed (it is posted in one of the Iran threads). Shooting a single boat in blue waters may seem like a turkey shoot but in littoral waters with dozens within the horizon in the fog of war they can be quite deadly.

Close in systems and the ability to deal with surface swarms is something that is going to be a must have for vessels operating frequently in the littorals during peacetime and wartime. Guided gun projectiles, Missiles and even DEW will have to form the last line of defense against these tactics. Overhead surveillance, either manned or unmanned, is also going to be vital when transitioning these waters or operating within them for extended periods.

More audacious Cheen has responded to the sinking if their fishing boats by offering all sorts of equipment to the Argentine military and is currently funding and building a nuclear plant in Argentina too.

Mercantile to the core and unwilling to fight, the chinis. Now if it were a British trawler, what do you think might happen?

Navy steps up anti-piracy patrol - Dinakar Peri, The Hindu
In an expansion of its Mission Based Deployments (MBD) in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), the Navy deployed its P-8I long-range maritime surveillance aircraft for anti-piracy sorties from Salalah in Oman to patrol the Gulf of Aden.

“Long-range maritime reconnaissance Anti-Submarine Warfare aircraft P-8I undertakes anti-piracy patrol sorties from Salalah in the Gulf of Aden and other piracy prone areas in keeping with our MBD philosophy, to keep IOR safe and secure for all,” Navy spokesperson Captain D.K. Sharma said
in a tweet on Saturday.

The P-8I provided long-range Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA), Captain Sharma added.

Since 2008, India has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the commercially crucial Gulf of Aden.

“This was the second time the P-8I operated from Salalah for anti-piracy this year. It was operated from there first January,” a defence source said on Sunday..

Foreign ships also

Besides escorting Indian flagged vessels, ships of other countries have also been provided protection, a defence source said. “No ship under Indian escort has thus far been hijacked by pirates,” the source added.

Till date the Indian Navy has escorted 3,440 ships, of which 3,027 were of foreign flag and 413 Indian flag.

Navy ships also made 414 interventions at sea.

The Navy has deployed 73 ships till date on anti-piracy patrols.

Under the MBD concept, the Navy now maintains a ship at every choke point in the IOR at any point of time.

As part of expanding engagement maritime engagement, India has stepped up cooperation with Indian Ocean littoral states and maritime neighbours. Under the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, the Navy undertakes Joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) surveillance with Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius and Coordinated Patrols (CORPAT) with Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia.

Search and rescue and capability-enhancement activities have also emerged as major areas.

its getting worse boss !! The once mighty RN is almost a shadow of its former self. Its just hiding with niche capabilities and no real depth of force projection. The only capabilities worth mentioning are its marines, SSBN fleet, air defence ships for its carrier.

Probably cause they offered to comply with the Make In India Clauses
Turkey's largest industrial group that has undertaken important responsibilities for the country's defence and aviation industries, TAIS will manufacture the ships in a local shipyard as part of the Indian project.

As part of its tasks in the project, TAIS will be responsible for the modernisation of the shipyard, the design of the ships, engineering services, planning and management of production, preparation of shipbuilding material specifications and main materials.

As a pilot shipyard, the tender contract will be signed by Anadolu Deniz İnşaat Kızakları, TAIS's co-founder. A process of eight years is projected for the $2.3-billion tender. The total amount will be shared between TAIS and the local shipyard.

These ships are being built in India, much of the software will be ours, doubt the Turks will insert a GPS tracker which we cannot detect in these ships, the design off course may be accessed by Pakis, but these being a supply/ transport ship, it may not be of much use for the Pakis except noting the speed with which our carrier force groups can move

they will be glad to take your money, anytime.

but, they will never abandon the pakis, come what may
