This was one clear mistake of Bano-jee. With a little sweet talk she could have left this in the rear-view mirror BUT for her reactive politics ... BJP's GE 2019 wins have really unnerved her.

Doctors' strike: When Mamata's ultimatum nixed a deal almost done
Emergency services at NRS hospital was about to resume around 1pm when agitating junior doctors learnt that the chief minister had issued a four-hour ultimatum asking them to join work or face action.

The junior doctors at NRS hospital reacted with anger to chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s ultimatum and within minutes the mood turned rigid and they refused to let emergency services start.

This was not the only time when doctors had come close to agreeing to start emergency services at NRS hospital on Thursday. The efforts were scuttled a second time when a mob from outside tried to barge into the hospital premises around 4.30pm.

This time the doctors even closed the hospital gate they had kept open for the past three days.

What the chief minister said is an utterly irresponsible statement. The government feels it is all-powerful. If it thinks there is no need for doctors in Bengal, then so be it. We would appeal to all doctors in the state to start mass resignation,” said a striking junior doctor.
Regular folks challenging authority now when previously they would have mumbled an curse and moved on.

Agitating Bengal Doctors Set 6 Conditions To End Stir, Seek Mamata Banerjee's Apology
"We want unconditional apology of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for the manner in which she had addressed us at the SSKM Hospital yesterday. She should not have said what she had," a spokesperson of the joint forum of junior doctors, Dr Arindam Dutta, said.

<snip>

Listing the six conditions, the agitators said the chief minister will have to visit the injured doctors at the hospital and her office should release a statement condemning the attack on them.
Condemning the attack would mean condemning her 'core' votebank. Speaking for her 'core' votebank, did she not recently state that one has to put up with the occasional kicks of a milk giving cow?

Will Mumtaz Bano-jee oblige?

Opinion | Is Mamata Banerjee Losing The Plot? Anti-Mamataism Fast Becoming A State Of Bengali Mind
Has Mamata Banerjee lost the plot? After the elections, in which she ceded a lot of political ground to a resurgent BJP, the chief minister is clearly out of depth. While politically she hasn’t been able to come up with a counter-narrative to stall the BJP’s advance in West Bengal, she has come a cropper administratively too to win back popular opinion.

A stubborn doctors' strike that has crippled medical services has also dealt a debilitating blow to whatever remained of Mamata’s stature as an administrator. Best known for her mercurial temperament and as a rabble-rousing street politician, it is street politics that’s gradually taking her down. [Reactive & confrontational politics]

Those ranged against her are making it sure that she never recovers. Always known to be a maverick but hot-headed, Mamata is playing into their hands. Right-wing activists are barracking her with Jai Shri Ram chants wherever she goes, and the chief minister is making a fool of herself by chasing and berating them with police action. The more she loses her cool, the more she is opening herself to ridicule and letting anti-Mamataism become an entrenched state of the Bengali mind. [Mistake]

Maintaining law and order was never her strong point—given that a sizeable section of her party men have shady backgrounds and her rule has always been rife with allegations of violations and extortions - and Mamata’s response to the doctors’ agitation has worsened matters further. Rather than sympathising with the doctors - one of whom was brutally thrashed by grieving relatives and friends of a deceased patient—she threatened them with dire action unless they returned to work. Her ultimatum has had the opposite result: the doctors refused flatly and health services in the state remain crippled. [.. after mistake]

The biggest casualty is Mamata’s standing, both as a political leader and an administrator. Always known to be impulsive, she is now coming across as someone bad-tempered as well. Her loss of composure is cause for celebration among her opponents, the BJP included. The state is already polarised—something that helped the BJP win 18 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state this time against its paltry tally of two in 2014—and the communal divide is getting wider with Mamata refusing to go in for a course correction.

While her trademark stubbornness yielded huge political dividends earlier and helped shape her image as a staunch anti-CPI(M) leader, the same trait is now weighing her down. Much of the voters’ anger this time was against her political lieutenants such as Anubrata Mandal, the TMC Birbhum district party president. Mamata though is sticking with them, no matter how repulsive they seem to be to an ordinary citizen.

Perhaps, Mamata has few options. Hundreds of Trinamool Congress workers have in recent months crossed over to the BJP and without her trusted party men, there, after all, will be no party. She is also publicly defending her relatives such as parliamentarian and nephew Abhishek Banerjee and refusing to answer questions about their new-found affluence. Pushed to a corner, she has chosen to brazen it out.

But Mamata is losing the narrative.

Buoyed by the election results, the BJP is taking her head on, provoking her at every step along the way. A party worker was killed, and the BJP insists on taking the body in a procession to Calcutta. The police refuses, but the BJP stages state-wide protests the next day, triggering televised clashes with police. For all practical purposes, it is the BJP which is setting the agenda and Mamata is at best reacting clumsily. [Reactive politics]

Mamata’s future, therefore, looks tense. Always quick to read the writing on the wall, the police and bureaucracy are reportedly beginning to drag feet. Trouble begins when they do, and sniff at a new master knocking on the door.

Reporting from Ground Zero.

The mood on the street is against the administration. From taxi drivers to cycle rickshaw r pulleys, ubiquitous chicken roll sellers to doctors (even in private) to maids. Everyone is saying she's a goner. Her appeasement policy has cut people to the core.

One segment who's solidly behind her is a religions minority. Overheard a conversation at a sewing sweat shop. An hour or so after she refused to go to governors meeting. "Saa*a gan*u ka bachcha called everyone but not her. They are dancing to Delhi tunes. "

She's on her way out. But there's going to be blood.

For someone who grew up in the city I can tell you this that the doctors coming out so openly against her is a major pushback.

Even TMC leaders who haven't jumped noisy because they won't be taken into BJP are chasing at the bit.

Irony of ironies is that Calcutta Mayor Bobby Hakim's daughter who is a doctor joined the protests

How does it matter? I know we may want that as justification. But mob violence is mob violence. Does it matter if they are from across the border, of any specific denomination. The fact that this happened and the administration's reactions are terrible. Would any of the above facts change that or lessen it.

She was in Beejpur today, (Mukul Roy's area). Among other things, she openly invited all "Bokhatay Chhele" (Bengali term for wayward youth, usually unemployed, and could be found at roadside Pan/Bidi/tea stalls, who while away their time ogling women) to join the party for an employment guarantee.

Forgive my poor translation, fellow Bengalis please help me with two things:
  1. A better translation for "Bokhatay Chhele"
  2. My pooch, what happens to "Bokhatay Meye" (their counterparts from the opposite gender). Do they end up in the Parliament?

Yes it matters. It adds insult to injury.. If true, it shows a complete breakdown of the most fundamental social contract between citizenry and the govt. This thing is worse than a constitutional crisis.

So her claim is that she had 5 people arrested in connection to the lynching incident. It is only coincidence, that later these might be found to be BJP workers, (and hence outsiders,) with a mission to foment trouble in her "peace-full" (wrong spelling intentional) state.

But here is a bit from Anandabazar (the most prestigious local newspaper and is always supplicant to her for advertisement revenue), wherein the newspaper interviewed the real perpetrators.

As per this report:

They have admitted that "It has gone beyond our farthest imagination, and this needs to be fixed ASAP." (because this has become a routine incident in Bengal, not lynching as such, but vandalising hospital property.). The eldest son of the deceased (patient party) is holding the position of the "Chhota Imam" of a local mosque.

There is a pan-India "OP boycott" planned for this Monday, by the doctors. The doctors should also use social media effectively to raise their concerns. In general they do still have lot of respect among common Indians. They should also ensure that the plight of their West Bengal colleagues get highlighted to each and every patient they treat. Let the whole country know that West Bengal under Mamta Banerjee is a god forsaken place and a danger to civilised societies.

PS: Saw a report in which the doctors have demanded that Mamta Banerjee visits them in the hospital for negotiations. She wanted them to visit her at her office earlier.

WB police behaves like a castrated TMC lapdog. The state also has a cadre of goons. The BJP should promise "some" of these lukkhas jobs and training as regular cops to bring law and order to the state rather than subvert it.

Come to think of it the police law and order I India is woefully understaffed and ineffective vs the scale of work they confront. Its not on par with anything in the developed world. Things function on a mix of good will and acceptable chaos. AShah needs to strengthen this perhaps withe a special look at WB.

'We feel highly insecure': Doctors turn down invite for closed-door meet with Mamata Banerjee
KOLKATA: Agitating doctors turned down the invite for a closed-door meeting with chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat on Saturday, raising apprehension about their security, and instead asked her to visit the NRS Medical College and Hospital for an open discussion to resolve the impasse.

They said no representative of the agitating doctors would be attending the meeting called by Banerjee at the state secretariat on Saturday evening.
"We feel highly insecure and apprehensive regarding our representatives' meeting with the chief minister behind closed doors. That is why we are not sending any representatives to the Chief Minister's Office to attend the meeting," said a spokesperson of the joint forum of junior doctors after holding a governing body meeting.
Instead, they invited Banerjee for a meeting at the Nil Ratan Sircar Medical College and Hospital, where two doctors were allegedly assaulted by relatives of a patient who had died on Monday night.

"We humbly request the chief minister to meet all of us at the NRSMCH to discuss and implement all our demands at the earliest," the spokesperson said.
"We are open to a healthy discussion to find a solution to meet our demands. We are deeply concerned about the sufferings of the common people," he added.
On Friday night, the agitating junior doctors declined to attend a meeting called by Banerjee at state secretariat, Nabanna, saying it was a ploy to break their stir.
After the protesting doctors did not turn up, Banerjee gave them time again at 5pm on Saturday.

Meanwhile, resignation by senior doctors continued in support of their protesting colleagues. Over 300 medicos across various state-run medical college and hospitals have resigned from their services.

Accepted demands of striking doctors but they must rejoin service: Mamata Banerjee
NEW DELHI: West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said that her government is willing to accept all the demands of the agitating doctors and requested them to rejoin services as the stir entered its fifth day.
Calling the assault on a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital an "unfortunate incident", Mamata said that her government is committed towards resuming normal services in the state at the earliest.
"We never arrested a single person. We will not take any police action. Health services cannot continue like this. I am not going to take any stringent action. Let good sense prevail," she said at a press conference today.
Mamata said her government continously tried to find a solution to the impasse, but the agitating doctors refused to hold talks with her.
"We've accepted all their demands. I had sent my ministers, principal secretary to meet the doctors, waited for 5 hours to meet doctors' delegations yesterday as well as today, but they did not come. You have to give respect to the constitutional body," she said.
She added that even after five days of strike by the junior doctors, the state government did not invoke the ESMA (Essential Services Maintenance) Act or take any action against the medicos.
The chief minsiter's statement comes hours after agitating doctors turned down an invite for a closed-door meeting with her at the state secretariat, raising apprehension about their security. The doctors instead asked Mamata to visit the NRS Medical College and Hospital for an open discussion to resolve the impasse.
On Friday too, the agitating junior doctors had declined to attend a meeting called by Banerjee at state secretariat, Nabanna, saying it was a ploy to break their stir.
The doctors, who are protesting against the assault on two of their colleagues at NRS Medical College and Hospital, had on Friday sought unconditional apology from Banerjee and set six conditions for the state government in order to withdraw their stir.

Meanwhile, resignation by senior doctors continued in support of their protesting colleagues. Over 300 medicos across various state-run medical college and hospitals have resigned from their services.

In pretty much all states in India, the police is now pretty much an official goon force of the elected state government. It is very severe in cases like KL and WB where political activism is way too high, and job opportunities are also less. The police force in these states, is one of those rare jobs which kind of gives an average person a good income (legal & illegal) and immense powers. Rampant politicization right from recruitment all the way till retirement is fairly common. We must also understand that 99% of the police officials are recruited from a state, and would also spend their entire careers in the state. Their chances of knowing a life style of any other place is bare minimum. The IPS cadre was better perhaps some 15-20 years back; but they too have now been politicised. The IPS cadre also knows that their service would pretty much be in a single state, so they too would soon find their political masters. This is purely my observation; many states also seems to prefer IPS officials from their own states (i.e they lived in that state before getting IPS), and such people also reach the top echelons of the police.

they rightly want a central law enacted under the IPC to make all assaults against doctors during the course of performance of their duties to be made a non bailable offence.

the minorities who attacked the doctors have still not been arrested by this communal creature now deathly fearful for her rapidly dwindling vote banks and her already much diminished chances of coming back to power.

If bank employees can have such a law in place, a law that was made many years ago, why not a law for the doctors. This has been a decades old and very longstanding demand by doctors across the country.

complicating all this is the fact that the present head of the Indian Medical association is a TMC MP

In the larger scheme of things, a doctor, is by many orders of magnitude, much more valuable to the society than a bank employee.

This observation is not made to belittle the bank employees but to highlight the skewed perception of social priorities in our country.

Mamata-Banoo has proved herself to be a huge liability for the other opposition parties. No other parties (AAP, SP, BSP, NCP, YRSCP, TDP, etc) would touch her with a 10-foot pole. The fact that the doc's agitation has spread to other parts of the country has the secret blessings of some elephantine brains in Delhi - just to let Mamata get stewed in her own juice, and to make her forget any dream she might have harboured for Federal Front. ...
No opposition leader now wants to be seen with her.

Another interesting development:
The peaceFOOL community is royally upset with Mamata-Banoo, because they are now being subjected as the butt of jokes as being called as "Goru" (cow).

[Mamata said earlier that she would be willing to accept the kicks of a cow that gives milk.]

Forgive my poor translation, fellow Bengalis please help me with two things:
  1. A better translation for "Bokhatay Chhele"
  2. My pooch, what happens to "Bokhatay Meye" (their counterparts from the opposite gender). Do they end up in the Parliament?
exactly the unemployed Kerala youth are recruited for mafia politics, kill and maim., so much for democracy

also one reason why the marxist govt does not want any job creation in the state ,

From WA:

Please do read.... Latest update from NRS
.
.
On the completion of the GB meeting, we have come to certain conclusions. We have certain demands that we have listed out. The same will be read out by our brother here. At the end of the meet, we are not going to entertain or answer any questions whatsoever. Further questions will be answered only when the GB meeting, to be held tomorrow morning, is concluded.

The CM has finally issued a statement and we welcome it. However, we are deeply saddened by the fact that we have to answer the masses through our press release. We are more than just eager to resume our duties. We do not want such helpless situations to prevail. This is our appeal that we want to return to our duties as soon as possible. Honourable CM has said today that the Health services cannot go on like this and we too agree with it. We do not want keep our opds shut. For her, this is a fight for her ego. For us, it is a fight for our survival.

As she has said, she has met all our demands. But the fact remains that no member of our fraternity has visited her. So how at all did our demands reach her ears and how did she grant them all? She said that Paribaha is doing fine. Our first condition put forward to her was that she go visit him and see how he is doing. In reality, Paribaha is suffering from post traumatic problems. He is suffering from short term memory loss and his vision has been affected. This young man who had always wanted to become an orthopedic doctor or a surgeon, will have to be on anti-epileptic medicines all life long. His dream of becoming a surgeon has been shattered and the world has lost a surgeon who wanted to serve them. Did he really deserve this?

CM said that action has been taken. If it is so then how did the attacks on Burdwan, Murshidabad, Calcutta National, NRS and Medinipur Medical Colleges happen? Stones were pelted all night long, acid bottles were thrown at girls' hostels, female pgts were harassed with exhibitionism. On the 13th there was a mob attack on NRS medical College and Hospital. On 14th and 15th in Murshidabad. Bankura MCH was mobbed and a doctor lost his eyes. Same happened at the Burdwan MCH. CNMC hostel was set on fire.

She claimed that these attacks were spontaneous reactions. We say, it was organized crime. Otherwise what else could explain the entry of two trucks full people to attack us? She said, 99% cases of violence could be stopped. Despite that, the number of evidenced cases of violence has reached up to 230+ in West Bengal. Our question is, if this is the figure after 99% violence has been blocked, what is the real magnitude of the violence? Does this spontaneous reaction promote hooliganism somewhere?

She said she was abused and attacked at SSKM. This was not the case. All present there were just shouting "We want justice! " and nothing more. There was no attack or abuse. The media has seen everything. Moreover, we were threatened ro resume our duties. She has compared our profession to that of policemen. What she has forgotten is that the police is formally trained for armed combat and we are not. We have our occupational hazards and we are not complaining against them. We are just saying that we cannot combat armed mob.

She has remarked that this movement has become a movement of the "outsiders". Let us clarify this: this is a fight for the whole of medical fraternity including the nurses and the paramedics. No one is an outsider here.

She has expressed a deaire to talk to us and that is exactly what we have wanted from day 1. She has called us over to Nabanna for the meeting. We do not want a closed door meeting. We want a meeting where everyone is present. We have no chosen committee or leader. We stand united. It is our earnest request to our CM to let the GB decide on the venue for the common good. We are always open and teady for discussion. We want things to get back to normal as early as possible.

The CM has said that she has deployed 3000 policemen altogether for this crisis. Now, taking into consideration some statistics, there are a total of 13,000 posts from the primary to the tertiary health care centers. Then why 3000 and not 13,000?

She has also said that she has spoken to the Governor and has settled things with him. However, the Governor has issued statement that nothing of that sort has happened. He has directed her to come meet the doctors as soon as possible to solve the crisis.

Above all, we do not want people to suffer any longer. We are as much agonised by the situation as you are. We apologize to the public for not being able to give them the service they deserve. We are not blaming anybody. We are hopeful that our CM being a sensible human being will strive towards making things right as soon as possible. Take one step forward and we will come be by steps forward. Here, I conclude the meet.

Sachin, You have studied the police. And have knowledge of inner workings.
Looks like All India services forget they work.for India and not State govt.
Need to remind them.
What changes you can think of.

Doctors dont run for elections. Didi and BJP do. If Momota cant manage providing basic medical facilities, she will bear the brunt.

Mamta has to eat humble pie.At least in her own domain. However, the public sympathy for the medicos in other states especially in those states where there are almost no incidents against medicos is minimal. They appear to be convenienyly jumping on the Bengal bandwagon with hardship to patients. There is also little mention at this time about the large number of cases of negligence by members of the medical profession affecting patients , and the rampant commercialisation by so-called super- speciality corporate hospitals where patients are needlessly asked to do multiple tests for minor ailments.

here the case is of govt doctors and especially in the cities they are a really over-worked lot. even senior doctors would regularly miss a meal just to get through the sea of poor patients that appear in the OPD's

for the interns life is continuous work with little rest, some might have to keep 30-36 hour work cycles and go without sleep for a couple of days very week.
these people are not the ones in the super speciality corporate hospitals.

Making a rare exception, ABP Ananda actually flashed the names of the 5 peacefuls, but a gag order is en-route, so... everyone watching ABP Ananda can see the names... (Sheik Atif etc....) before they bury the story.
