India made steady progress from above 150 three years ago to around 100 for the past several months, but it is unable to go up from there.

India should host the foot ball world cup instead of even trying for the olympics. Way more profitable.

Gunneswaran, Nagal and Ramanathan all playing different Challengers today.

Gunn is at 85. He needs to make a big push to get into Top 50 as time is running out for him. He will be 30 soon.

India hold Asian champions Qatar to a 0-0 draw and keep alive their World cup Qualification chances. Apparently it was a nail biting match and the score card does not do justice to quality of the play.
A video of highlights is here... match was played in Doha... we have a long way to go in football it appears

Indian juniors (currently world champions in team sprint and top ranked in sprint and keirin) dominated the Track Asia Cup cycling event, storming their way to top position, pushing back traditional Asian track powers Korea, Japan and Malaysia. Shocking how we have come so far in a sport where we were zerrow even at Asian level, to among the world's best juniors and continental best even at senior level with those juniors.

This is the kind of sporting revelation I love seeing. We've seen China master new sports magically while we spend years having 1-2 good players with no system around them win a few things, while they dominate with a stream of talent generated by a system. Now we have shooting team dominating almost every rifle/pistol world event and 18-20 year old cyclists topping the world junior championships and Asian senior events.

Saurabh Chaudhry breaks his own world record in the 10m air pistol event in the national championships . Third time he’s done it, having raised it from 245 to 246.3 to 246.8 now . Latest score won’t be an official one though , but he will probably manage to accomplish it again , ideally in the Olympic final ...

He’s the best shooter in the world at 17, with only the OG left among titles to win. He only took up shooting months before the last OG as a 14 year old .

we used to be in the top 100 back in the 90's as well. so this seems to be our 'usual' rank, not the 150's which was an aberration. progress would be if we can break into top 80 in next five years.

Vinesh Phogat overcame an incredibly hard draw to win bronze in the World Wrestling Championship in the 53kg class. She started out by destroying 6 time world medalist, 2009 champion and 2016 Rio bronze winner Sofia Mattson 11-0 in opening match. Next up she was pitted against reigning world champion and undisputed #1 Mayu Mukaida who proved much too powerful for her, losing 0-7 . But since Mayu made the final, Vinesh made repechage. Here she was up against American champion Sarah Hildebrandt, whom she beat 8-2. Finally, she beat a two time world medalist from Greece to win the bronze. Altogether she beat multiple opponents with almost 10 world/Olympic medals between them.

Meanwhile both Amit Panghal and Manish Kaushik have entered the World Boxing Championship semifinals, so minimum 2 bronzes - first time India is winning multiple world medals in one edition. The overall medal count for the country stood at four bronze medals claimed by Vijender Singh (2009), Vikas Krishan (2011), Shiva Thapa (2015) and Gaurav Bidhuri (2017).

In the TT Asian Championships, India won the 1st Division event and made the Champions Division event, where we lost the quarters to Japan but won against Singapore and now play HK for 5th/6th spots, either of which would be the highest ever position in Asian level , behind the big four (China, Japan, Taiwan, Korea).

Bajrang Punia also seals a Tokyo berth in men’s 65kg freestyle at the World Championships in Turkmenistan, where he lost the semifinal in controversial circumstances to the local opponent in a match marred by bribed mat referees.

Perhaps this is a good thing in terms of karma - after previous bronze and silvers Bajrang was heavily favored for gold here, before the Turkmen referees robbed him . He will be furious at Tokyo and hopefully will win gold there .

Ravi Dahiya also clinched a berth in 57kg to Tokyo after the junior had a dream run beating the European champion, the former world champion and losing narrowly in the semifinal to the reigning world champion and #1 from Russia . Both Bajrang and Ravi have one more repechage bout left - if they win that, they pick up bronzes.

Former world champion Mirabai Chanu finished 4th at the world weightlifting championship, lifting 201kg, her personal best and first time over 200kg. Since the winning Chinese and North Koreans are under doping clouds (they came back from recent bans) and only one lifter per country at Olympics, she has a good medal chance at Tokyo. For an idea of the scale of competition, she's in the 49kg class, and has to aggregate >4x her bodyweight in total lift to win a world level medal. Chanu is the 2017 world champion but lost out all of 2018 to a back injury, and is only returning to competition now, in a new weight class (previously 47kg which is no longer an Olympic class).

Both Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya won bronzes as India finished with 3 bronzes from the World Wrestling Championship. A better performance than expected in some ways (only 2 medals were expected) but worse in others - Bajrang was robbed of what would have been a likely first world level gold for him.

Amit Panghal becomes the first Indian ever to make the final of the world boxing championship in 52kg . Manish Kaushik lost his semifinal to the reigning champion . Twin medals is already the best ever performance, and silver or gold will be unprecedented. Panghal will take on the reigning Olympic champion from Uzbekistan in the final.

16-year old Jeremy Lalruninga did well to equal his world junior record performance despite having a bad day at the senior 2019 world championship. He's lifting almost 300kg now, and world medal level is 330kg. He flubbed all his higher weight lifts, which would have gotten him to 310kg+ had he succeeded. He's still very young, but has the ability to become the next Indian world level lifter after Mirabai, considering he now equals his personal record with just his first lift. At 16 he already lifts FAR more than Commonwealth senior standard (CWG2018 gold was <290kg). Too young to be a medal contender at Tokyo 2020 but there's a future World/Olympic medal waiting for his name on it.

Amit Panghal lost in the final of the world boxing championship but still became the first ever Indian to make the title round .

In wrestling, world junior champion Deepak Punia made the final of the 86kg in the world championship , and will take on the legendary Hassan Yazdani - the world, Olympic and Asian champion . Deepak also books his Tokyo ticket in the process . If he wins tomorrow, he would accomplish the stunning feat of becoming junior and senior world champion within 3 months of each other. The last Indian senior world champion was Sushil Kumar in 2010.

One more potential medal in wrestling 61kg where Rahul Aware lost the semifinal and will fight repechage . This is not an Olympic weight category though . Aware moved up weights after Ravi Dahiya pushed him out in the selection trials. With four medals for certain and a potential 5th, this is easily India’s best ever performance in the world wrestling championship .

Deepak Punia was injured in prior matches and declared unfit to fight the final, and thus settled for silver. He sustained an eye injury against the Kazakh in the quarters, a bitterly fought match where the local was fighting dirty and lost points for rough play, with Punia winning in the dying seconds. He also injured his ankle in the semifinal. Bummer, but he would really have had to be at full strength to take on Yazdani. He only just turned 20 and is the reigning world junior champion and potential world/Olympic senior champion in future, having made the final in his very first senior WC.

Rahul Aware also capped off the event with a bronze, so that India finished with 5 medals - a silver and 4 bronzes, easily the best ever world championship performance in wrestling. Four of the five medals came in Olympic categories where India won quotas. Having nailed down spots, the players can now focus fully on peaking at Tokyo 2020, instead of chasing qualification.

What was advocated here on this thread many moons ago during CWG2018 finds resonance within Indian Olympic Association now:
CWG waste of time, India should withdraw altogether: IOA president
Claiming that they are no longer relevant, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president Narinder Batra has called for the country to withdraw altogether from the Commonwealth Games rather than boycotting a one-off edition. Batra added that India should instead focus on taking part in international events where the level of competition is high to improve its standing at the Olympics.

Batra said he will put up this proposal at the IOA executive board meeting, which is likely to be held next month. If the members approve, the Olympic body will take it up with the government and subsequently the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) president, when she visits the country in November.

“These Games have no standard. For me, these are a waste of time and money. We win 70 medals, 100 medals at the Commonwealth Games while at the Olympics, we get stuck at two (medals),” Batra told The Indian Express, referring to India’s tally in Rio. “That means the level of competition isn’t high at CWG. It’s not a ranking tournament either. So why waste time? We should rather go to better competitions and prepare for the Olympics.”
He's right - unlike in AG in many events, performances in CWG doesn't even offer qualification towards OG or World Championships. Even in swimming, the AG standard is at or near world standard. The reason stated on this thread was exactly the same.

4x400 mixed team makes the world athletics championship final, and qualify for Tokyo 2020 in the process . They’re unlikely to medal using the current quartet but are capable of improving once injured folks like Hima Das return .

No other medal prospects . Neeraj Chopra is still recovering from elbow surgery in April and is not participating .

Yes Nagal wins a Challenger and is up to rank 135.

Ramanathan is a big disappointment. He lost again, this time to Robrido.

Nagal playing tomorrow in another Challenger. He is new tennis hope for India. I am afraid Gunneswaran turning 30 won't get into the top 50.

Probably because they made a royal mess of the Asian Games campaign after blowing away everyone in the group stage, and unless they qualify for Tokyo 2020, results in friendlies mean little.

The 10th ranked women's side merits greater mention, having twice held #5 England to draws while on tour.

Ramanathan went back to two handed back hand, but he is still serve and volleying. Strange combination. He seems to be a good volleyer though. He is not bad with ground strokes either. May be he lacks consistency.

Nagal @135 is playing a Challenger in Brazil. If he wins it, it will move him to 115.

https://www.essentiallysports.com/india ... t-success/

Indian Tennis Player Sumit Nagal Disappointed With ‘No Support’ After Recent Success
Indian next-generation star Sumit Nagal claimed the ATP Buenos Aires Challenger event and become the first Indian to triumph on South American clay on Sunday after defeating Facundo Bagnis 6-4, 6-2 in the finals.

Recently, Sumit Nagal managed to enter a lot of undiscovered territories in Indian tennis. He became the first Indian to take a set off Roger Federer in the first round of the US Open 2019. He also reached two finals of the challenger events. However, Nagal believes that he is still not getting support as people are just ‘walking away’ when he needs support
However, the shortfall of monetary funds meant that he neither had the support of his coach nor the physio, who could help him recover from the grueling matches on the Argentinian clay as he suggested that it is too costly to travel with a coach.

“I was all alone here. No one was with me to help out. I couldn’t have my coach(Sascha Nensel) and trainer(Milos Galecic) traveling with me, as it’s tough to travel with a coach all the time, as it costs a lot,” Nagal said.

One way, it has been great that I have been playing good tennis but it’s not easy to do it and I’m really sad,” Nagal told PTI in Buenos Aires.

Yesterday I watched the India-SF test being played at Pune (before lunch). I am surprised that the stadium seems to be practically empty. Is this a screw up (I read some comments that more people are waitinng to get in than those who are in the stadium) or is this the present day reality?
