Why should have GoI not agreed to this proposal ? Rejecting it would have been stupidity.

How does Kartapur opening plays into the hands of Khalistanis ? Can someone please explain.
It isn't like Khalistanis don't already have access to Sikh Religious places in India or abroad or most of the Sikhs aren't aware of Khalistani ideology already. Rejecting or accepting it totally in their hands.

As far Pakis making 36 Million dollars every year, The assumption is that there will be 5000 Sikhs everyday visiting Kartarpur Sahab for many years to come. Are the numbers really practical ? I think Pakis played into Indian hands and now there is a precedent of visa-free travel to Bakistan and charging extra money for any religious travel.

PS: Is Kartarpur visa free access only for Bonafide Sikhs or anyone from India ?

Anyone.

The bakis sprung a trap for India by proposing Kartarpur. Rejecting it would have pitted India against the Sikhs. India side-stepped the trap by accepting it going against the baki expectation.

India not only accepted it, it doubled down on it. At the height of tension following Balakot IIRC, INDIA called for meeting on the corridor much against the prevailing wisdom at that time in India and Bakistan.

India completed its part of the bargain much ahead of the bakis to show its intent and the bakis were struggling to catch up for a very long time. They had expected India to reject their Kartarpur corridor proposal and India did not! Bakistan had designed the proposal to incite Sikh passion against India with the Khalistan 2020 referendum in mind.

So while it is a risk, it is a risk India is willing to take. Depending how the corridor is constructed, it can be thoroughly sanitized.

E.g. One safeguard built in is that the yatris are supposed to return back the same day to prevent brainwashing time. There are others.

Also opens up the option of India proposing to buy out the corridor, the Gurudwara and the surrounding land. Bakis will promptly reject it BUT India would have made its point to the Sikhs in India who are all we are directly concerned about.

Also opens up the possibility for India making a grab for the Gurudwara and posing a question to bakistan. Remember, on the the baki nuke redline is to nuke Indian forces on its land. Would they dare do that to the Indian forces stationed around the Gurudwara but not inside?

At some risk, India has opened a range of possibilities to be explored at a future date of its choosing. Lets see.

From the border the Gurudwara is less than 5 km away.

It is a risk only if the Govt Hierarchy is sleeping or has malicious intent as we've seen in the past.
In the past there are whispers that even terrorists have been protected and provided political power, or even worse.

Intel agencies will keep doing their work like clockwork and updating the powers that be.
It is for the power that be to formulate policies, weigh all options and green-light action on the ground.

Like all things coming out of Paxistan, this referendum 2020 will also be a damp squib. Expect some hot pindi chana gas to float in a total of 5-6 western capitals for a few hours, some more halla-gulla in the Islamic republic of Londonistan and that will be it.
A few morons may try a few things in the REAL PUNJAB in India, but they will be quickly swatted away by the public and law and order folks.

Any photographs of this Kartarpur corridor? Are there walls on the sides to prevent pilgrims from going to Pakistan (both figuratively and literally)? Do you have to walk the 5km route or vehicles (like rikshwas) allowed? I don't think there will 5000 everyday forever. More likely a few hundred on weekends once excitement is over and on weekdays even less. Rs1400 is pretty steep to walk to a holy place.

Gentle B-RFites :

Regarding the Kartarpur Corridor Charge.

I would opine that India should respond with the following counter :

1. Charge every Terrorstani Patient for full Cost of Medical Treatment including International Hospital Charges and Medicines.

2. No more free scholarships for Terroistani Students. Charge them International standard of College - University Fees

3. Charge a similar amount to all Pakistan Visitors on a Religious Pilgrimage to - be it to Ajmer Shariff or Delhi Shariff or any other Muslim Holy Places like Haji Ali, Haji Malang, Shirdi Sai Baba etc. etc.

4. Railway - Air - other Travel as charged to Foreigners.

I O W : Nothing Free in India. Fees to be paid in Advance in U S Dollars before entering India for the credit of of the State Bank of India or any other Institution.

Remember : There is nothing FREE in Freeport Bahamas, Illinois, Maine, N Y, Texas or any other Place!

Any other measures that the Indian Government can SQUEEZE from the Terroristanis.

Charge a "KC Cess" of $ 21 from all Paxistanis coming into india.
The number of Paxistanis coming to India > The number of Sikh Pilgrims wanting to visit Kartarpur.
GoI can pay for the pilgrims with a varying quota, depending on how much is earned from the Paxistanis - More during Guruparab, Baisakhi and other festivals.

Charging any fee is protocol based. If India charges any fee on Visa to Pakistanis, Then Pak will also jack up the fee on visa to Indians. How does that help Indian cause ?
How many patients/Students from Pakistan actually visit India every year. Grabbing few thousand dollars would neither send any message nor stop Pakis from charging this Jaziya. Its a cat and mouse game which both sides know how to play well.

Kartarpur has visa free entry hence Jaziya. Sikhs may pay it once or twice and then it would be only on special occasions. GoI already charges visa fee from everyone, so there are no free lunches.

PS: And oh yes, Pakis are no friends of Sikhs. They are ready to nuke their own country if Indian forces are winning, Kartarpur notwithstanding.

There already are many Gurudwaras at Dera Baba Nanak which is this side of river Ravi. The Gurudwaras were made by descendants of Guru Nanak Dev ji. For example Gurudwara Chola sahib has Guru ji's clothes., there is a Gurudwara where Guru ji's slippers are kept., there is a gurudwara where Guru ji's utensils are kept. They all used this to to earn their livelihood. Kabir Bedi the actor of Indian/foreign movies is one such descendant.

There is a Gurudwara/Temple close by for Guru jis Son Baba Lakhmi chand (who are disowned by Guru Nanak) .

The annual fairs are held at Batala (where Guru ji got married) and Dera Baba Nanak where Guru ji lived. Kartarpur Gurudwara across the river Ravi does not add much! except for the dirty politics!

LHC grants bail to Nawaz Sharif on medical grounds - Our Correspondent
The Lahore High Court (LHC) has granted a bail to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who is under treatment at a hospital for an immune disorder, on medical grounds.
A two judge-judge bench of the LHC – headed by Justice Baqar Najafi – granted bail to the ailing politician in the Chaudhry Sugar Mill case on Friday. PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif had filed the bail application on Thursday.
“We applied for bail on the grounds that his health condition is deteriorating and he needs better treatment,” the lawyer for the petitioner Azam Nazir Tarar said.
Nawaz, a three-time former prime minister, is serving a seven-year jail sentence after his conviction in the Al-Azizia/Hill Metal Establishment corruption reference last year.

Onus for peace talks between India and Pakistan lies with Islamabad: US – PTI

HIGHLIGHTS

- A State Department official said the US will continue to encourage an atmosphere that allows for constructive Indo-Pak dialogue.

- "He (Trump) certainly is prepared to play a mediation role, if both the countries ask. It has been India's position not to seek outside mediation," the official said.

WASHINGTON: The onus for peace talks between India and Pakistan lies with Islamabad which has to take "sustained and irreversible actions" against terror groups, a senior US official has said, reiterating President Donald Trump's willingness to mediate on the Kashmir issue, only if asked by both the countries.

India has not been engaging with Pakistan since an attack on the Air Force base at Pathankot in January of 2016 by a Pakistan-based terror group, maintaining that talks and terror cannot go together.

Bilateral relations touched a new low when India revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir in August following which Pakistan downgraded the diplomatic ties and expelled the Indian envoy.

The State Department official said the US will continue to encourage an atmosphere that allows for constructive Indo-Pak dialogue.

President Trump has expressed his concern over the level of tension between India and Pakistan. And he discussed Kashmir directly in his meetings with Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Imran Khan, the official said on condition of anonymity.

"He (Trump) certainly is prepared to play a mediation role, if both the countries ask. It has been India's position not to seek outside mediation," the official said.

If the President is asked to mediate by both countries, he has expressed his willingness and his interests to help facilitate a solution, the official told a group of reporters when pressed further. India has been quite clear in Prime Minister Modi's office saying that they are not seeking mediation, the official said.

India has always maintained that Jammu and Kashmir is its integral part and ruled out any third party mediation, including either from the UN or the US, saying it is a bilateral issue with Pakistan.

However, the official said it does not mean that the US is not actively encouraging a dialogue to take place and that an atmosphere for constructive dialogue between the two countries be established.

The onus for peace talks between India and Pakistan lies with Islamabad by taking sustained and irreversible actions against terrorist groups, according to the official.

The official termed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Kartarpur Corridor a welcome confidence building measure between India and Pakistan which will help increase people-to-people contact.

India and Pakistan on Thursday signed the historic agreement on the Kartarpur corridor that will allow Indian pilgrims to undertake visa-free visit to the shrine of the Sikh religion's founder Guru Nanak Dev in Pakistan.

"While it's a small step, we need more like this to also create the will, the goodwill and the environment for constructive dialogue," the official said.

Asked if the US supports India's position that "talks and terror cannot go together", the official said it is important that Pakistan take "sustainable and irreversible steps against terrorism".

It is also possible to have a dialogue and the United States encourages the countries to engage as two nuclear powers living side by side, the official said.

"When you have two nuclear powers ... it is important that your all avenues be explored to increase contact and communication between the two sides, the official said, adding that President Trump is engaged with leaders of both the countries.

Referring to the 'Howdy Modi' event in Houston in September, the official said this demonstrated the very close partnership and friendship that the US has with India.

"The India-US strategic partnership has been growing over the last two and a half years. It is obviously part of a longer bipartisan two decade's of effort to improve relations with India that has now reached a stage of confidence and maturity," the official added.

T20 action over the fortnight - don't believe these were posted here:

Rapid force sniper killed, 10 others injured in Quetta blast
https://www.dawn.com/news/1511075/rapid ... etta-blast
QUETTA: A Rapid Response Force (RRG) sniper was martyred and 10 others — five security personnel and as many civilians — were injured in a bomb blast that rocked the busy Double Road area on Tuesday evening. Many nearby shops and cars parked at the spot caught fire and were ultimately gutted. Police officials said that the target of the remote-controlled bomb blast was an RRG vehicle on routine patrol. “Unidentified people had planted explosives in a motorcycle and parked it in front of the carpet shops. They detonated the explosives with remote control when the RRG patrol reached there.

“Eleven people, including six security personnel, were injured in the powerful blast and one of them — a head constable of RRG — succumbed to his multiple injuries in hospital,” said Deputy Inspector General of Quetta police Abdul Razzaq Cheema during his visit to the site after the blast.

The injured were taken to the Civil Hospital Quetta where they were admitted to the Trauma Centre. The RRG personnel who lost his life was identified as Khalil Ahmed who was on ‘sniper duty’ in the vehicle attacked. “Around 8kg explosive has been used in the blast,” DIG Cheema said, adding that amid a threat alert police had already made security arrangements in the capital of Balochistan.
Three policemen, two children among nine injured in Quetta blast

At least nine people have been injured in an explosion on Spinny Road in Quetta Monday evening. Three of the victims are policemen, two are children and one is a woman. It was reportedly a targeted attack on a police van. Police said the explosives were planted on a motorcycle. This is the third blast targeting law enforcement in Quetta in the last few months.

Pakistan unlikely to meet debt reduction targets - Shahbaz Rana

ISLAMABAD: The government may not achieve most of its targets set in the medium-term debt reduction strategy due to current high public debt levels amid addition of $14 billion to the external public debt in current fiscal year, said the Ministry of Finance on Friday.

However, it emphasised that the country would make significant progress on achieving the targets set for the 2019-24 period, including putting the country’s debt on a downward path.

Headed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)’s former finance minister Asad Umar, the National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance took a briefing on the government’s debt management strategy.

“We may not be able to meet all the medium-term debt strategy targets due to current high debt levels but we will make significant progress towards achieving these goals,” stressed Abdul Rehman Warraich, Director General of Debt Policy Coordination Office of the Ministry of Finance.

Economic woes mount as debt, deficit stay high

The committee had a heated discussion on the continued absence of Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh from its meetings. Asad Umar agreed, in principle, that attending standing committee meetings was in the interest of all the ministers, but said there had been precedents where finance ministers in the past did not attend meetings.

“We are trying to bring perfect democracy only in the standing committee on finance and I do not agree with that,” remarked Umar, who himself had hardly missed any committee meeting as the finance minister.

However, PPP’s Hina Rabbani Khar strongly pushed the demand for binding the finance adviser to attend the committee meetings.

Key objectives of the medium-term debt strategy were to have a longer-maturity debt profile, increase borrowing at fixed interest rates, enhance the share of concessionary financing and reduce exchange rate shocks, said the director general of Debt Office.

Total public debt stood at 80.4% of GDP by the end of June 2019, which the government wants to cut to 66.5% by 2024. The share of domestic debt in the total public debt was 66%, which the government seeks to slash to 59% in five years.

The DG said the external debt portfolio was “pretty in line with the target but the government wants to reduce its reliance on commercial bank loans”. The share of commercial bank loans in the total external public debt was 18%, which the government wants to reduce to 12% in five years.

“We believe that over the longer run the external debt should not be more than 30% but considering the huge external financing needs, the external debt ratio is going to worsen a little bit,” said the DG Debt Office.

“The share of external debt will also rise because of low levels of foreign exchange reserves, which will be built by taking external loans,” said Umar.

Pakistan’s debt to rise to over 78% of GDP: IMF

Responding to a question, the DG Debt Office said the external public debt would go up by $14 billion in the current fiscal year whereas gross financing inflows were estimated at $21 billion.

The external public debt stood at $84 billion at the end of previous fiscal year on June 30, 2019, according to the SBP statistics. This may now go up to $98 billion by June 2020.

The total external debt stood at $106 billion at the end of previous fiscal year, which included $84 billion of public debt.

“The debt management strategy looks very good but the underlying assumptions are very unrealistic, therefore, these targets will be missed,” remarked Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N)’s Dr Ayesha Ghaus Pasha.

The debt maturity profile improved significantly in the previous fiscal year due to the re-profiling of central bank debt, said the DG. “Over the next five years, we will be able to improve the maturity profile but we will not be able to meet the target,” he added.

At present, the share of short-term debt in the total domestic debt is 27%, which the Ministry of Finance wants to reduce to 20% by 2024. Similarly, the share of medium-term debt of one to five years is 30%, which the ministry wants to keep at the current level.

The share of long-term debt (more than five years) is 44%, which the government seeks to increase to 50% by 2024.

The DG Debt Office said the government desired to increase the share of fixed-interest debt in the total domestic debt from the current 45% to 53% over the next five years.

When the PPP’s Syed Naveed Qamar objected to taking loans at fixed rates at a time when the rates were too high, the DG Debt Office said due to a high interest rate environment, the government did not have a plan to heavily rely on fixed-interest loans for two years.

The DG said the government wanted to increase the share of Islamic financing from 1% to 10% over five years but due to the problem in identifying the assets to be placed as collateral, it would be hard to achieve the target.

Overall, the PTI government was projected to add Rs19.3 trillion to the public debt in its five-year term, which would be equal to 80% of the debt piled up in the past 71 years, and the debt would remain at unsustainable levels, showed figures of the Ministry of Finance.

The public debt, which was at Rs24.2 trillion or 72.1% of GDP at the end of PML-N government’s term, would surge to Rs43.5 trillion or 70.1% of GDP by 2022-23, showed figures of the Ministry of Finance.

There will be an increase of Rs19.3 trillion or 80% in the public debt during its five-year term as compared to the debt level left behind by the PML-N. Over 31% addition to the public debt during the PTI tenure has been on account of rupee depreciation.

Panic in RATODERO, Pakistan After 900 Children Test Positive for H.I.V.

with not even a quarter of the city’s population yet tested for the virus, officials are dreading that the real number of infected is much higher than the 1,112 confirmed cases so far.

From 2010 to 2018, the number of H.I.V.-positive people in Pakistan nearly doubled, to about 160,000, according to estimates by UNAIDS, the United Nations task force that specializes in H.I.V. and AIDS. During that time, the number of new infections jumped 38 percent in those 15 to 24.

The real number is likely higher; much of the population goes untested, while only about 10 percent of people thought to be H.I.V.-positive are being treated.

The country spends very little on its efforts to counter H.I.V. and AIDS and is nearly entirely dependent on support from other countries for its programs, whether for funding to staff testing centers or to provide retroviral drugs to counter the virus.

Since 2003, there have been eight H.I.V. outbreaks in Pakistan. And Ratodero had been the site of one before: In 2016, an outbreak hit some 1,500 adult men who had engaged in sex with infected prostitutes, officials said.

Ex-PakistanPMNawaz Sharif suffers angina attack - PTI

HIGHLIGHTS

- Angina is a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart

- Sharif suffered angina pain in the morning while undergoing treatment at the hospital, the Dawn News reported quoting Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) Principal Dr. Mehmood Ayaz

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan Prime Minister [url=http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topi ... NawazNawaz Sharif on Saturday suffered angina pain while undergoing treatment at a Lahore hospital, according to a media report.

Angina is a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.

Sharif suffered angina pain in the morning while undergoing treatment at the hospital, the Dawn News reported quoting Services Institute of Medical Sciences (SIMS) Principal Dr Mahmood Ayaz.

Ayaz refuted reports in a section of media that the 69-year-old Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader has suffered a heart attack.

Earlier in the day, Sharif's lawyer Khawaja Haris claimed that the former premier had suffered a "minor heart attack" last night and that his "life is in danger".

Speaking to reporters at the hospital, Ayaz said Sharif's platelet count is now rising. He is administered around 16 injections of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) every day.

The Lahore high court on Friday granted bail to Sharif, who is undergoing treatment, after being diagnosed with an acute immune disorder, which reduced his blood platelet count to dangerous levels.

The three-time premier was in Kot Lakhpat jail but early this month was sent to the custody of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), which is probing the Sharif family in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

He was rushed to the Services Hospital in Lahore from the NAB office late on Monday night after a massive drop in his platelet count.

Sharif is also serving a seven-year imprisonment in the Al-Azizia corruption case.

On Thursday evening, Sharif's platelet count again dropped from 20,000 to 6,000. Dangerous internal bleeding can occur when the platelet count falls below 10,000 platelets per microliter, according to doctors.

"The medical reports of the PML-N supreme leader have been sent to doctors abroad for their opinion," a party leader said.

Sharif's daughter Nawaz, 45, is also under treatment at the same hospital

After This War, India Became A Powerhouse and Pakistan Was Ruined
Thirteen days later, Pakistan had been amputated. Indian troops had conquered East Pakistan, which became the new nation of Bangladesh. More than ninety thousand Pakistani soldiers were taken prisoner, half the Pakistani Navy had been sunk and the Indian Air Force came out on top. It was total humiliation, and not just for Pakistan. The United States and Britain sent aircraft carriers in a futile attempt to intimidate India, and ended up facing off against Soviet warships. Pakistan’s defeat also spurred its rulers to begin the development of nuclear weapons. One issue that hampered Pakistan’s war effort would soon become familiar in Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and other ethnically divided nations. In 1971, Bengalis comprised a significant part of the Pakistani military, especially in technical jobs.Meanwhile, the superpowers were flexing their muscles. Despite its cruelty toward the Bengalis, and the opposition of U.S. diplomats, President Richard Nixon and National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger backed Pakistan against pro-Soviet India (see the Nixon-Kissinger transcripts here). Task Force 74, centered on the aircraft carrier Enterprise, steamed into the Bay of Bengal, as did the British carrier Eagle. Why India would have been intimidated into a cease-fire, even as its tanks were rolling into Dhaka, is a mystery. America’s attempt to deter India from defeating Pakistan became a case study of the limitations of relying on the threat of force to compel other nations to change their behavior.

Baghdadi , the ISI " Big Daddy", has met his end scuttling, screaming and sh*tting in his pants in an underground tunnel, blowing himself up to smithereens thanks to the Donald! 3 hearty cheers to Trump.More strength to his arm in pursuing Islamic terror.

Now dear Donald, head for Pukeistan and eliminate in similar fashion the Islamic jihadis protected by tge Pakis responsible for the terror atrocities in India on 26/11 where many of your countrymen, Jewish individuals targeted too.Your job is only half done.Taking down the Paki protected sh*tworms of stinking pigs, the sacred duty of the Paki armed forces, is your unfinished business which India would be very happy in helping you
to achieve.

IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi killed in US raid in Syria, Donald Trump says

Speaking at the White House on Sunday, the President said the IS leader “died like a dog, he died like a coward” in an operation on Saturday evening.

Mr Trump said he had watched the operation unfold by video “so clearly” that it was “almost like a movie”, later adding that Al-Baghdadi died while “crying, whimpering and screaming”.

"Last night, the United States brought the world's number one terrorist leader to justice. Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is dead," he said.

“He will never again harm another innocent man, woman or child.

“He died like a dog. He died like a coward. The world is now a much safer place. God bless America. Thank you.”

Mr Trump said US intelligence forces had followed him for weeks before the incident on Saturday, and that “many people” had been killed in the final raid.

He added that “two or three efforts were cancelled” before Saturday’s operation, which saw eight helicopters land “in a friendly port, in a friendly country” - although he refused to disclose the specific location.

According to Mr Trump, the US team “were greeted with a lot of firepower” but Baghdadi was surrounded by airpower and “we lost nobody”.

He said Al Baghdadi was chased “into a dead-end tunnel” where he detonated a suicide vest and killed himself and three of his children.

Earlier on Sunday, Newsweek quoted unnamed sources as saying the raid was carried out by special operations forces after they received "actionable intelligence".

Trump had earlier tweeted in the early hours of Sunday: “Something very big has just happened!”

Al-Baghdadi has led the IS terror group for the last five years and has remained at large with a £19.5 million bounty on his head despite several claims that he had been killed, which later turned out to be untrue.

He is believed to be responsible for encouraging jihadists who couldn’t travel to the caliphate to kill people where they were.

IS released a video of a man it claimed to be Baghdadi earlier this year - the first time he had been seen in five years.

Before that, the leader’s last public appearance was when he delivered a sermon at Mosul’s Great Mosque of al-Nuri in 2014 in which he declared the creation of a "caliphate" across parts of Syria and Iraq.

Since then he has released audio recordings, including one last month in which he called on members of IS to do all they could to free IS detainees and women held in jails and camps.

In the US, some extremists have pledged their allegiance to al-Baghdadi on social media including Tashfeen Malik, who alongside husband Syed Rizwan killed 14 people and injured 22 in a mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, in 2015.

A deafening silence - Irfan Husain

IMAGINE a scenario in which a Western country locks up hundreds of thousands of Muslims in internment camps. Here, they are ‘re-educated’ to adopt liberal values that include a change of language and lifestyle.

Had such a deliberate effort to brainwash an entire Muslim community been attempted, there would be riots and protests across the Islamic world. Embassies of the country responsible for this outrage would be attacked, and its businesses boycotted. We know from experience that this sequence of events is pretty much standard operating procedure whenever real or perceived acts of state-organised violence against Muslims take place.

Also read: In China's Xinjiang, Big Brother moves into Uighur homes as 'family'

So why the deafening silence across the Islamic world when around 1.5 million Muslims in China’s Xinjiang province have been forced into vast ‘re-education centres’? Even before this policy was launched, Uighur culture was under attack, with beards and headscarves strongly discouraged by an increasingly harsh Chinese administration. It is now virtually impossible to find books in the Uighur language in bookshops.

Around half the province’s population of 24m is Sunni, and largely follows the Sufi tradition. Apart from Uighurs, there are Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Hui and other minorities in Xinjiang. Ever since the government in Beijing began its policy of moving Han Chinese to the province to dilute the Muslim presence, Uighur separatist groups have resisted and staged sporadic attacks. As often happens, the state has countered with tough action and policies.

The aim of the Chinese government is to ‘transform through education’. For thousands of years, the Chinese ruling class has sought to build a stable society free of tension between various ethnic groups. So when a handful of Uighur resisted the attempt to integrate them into mainstream Han culture, they were accused of separatism and subversion. One such group is the Uighur mother-tongue movement : the authorities have dubbed it the ‘fourth evil’ after separatism, religious extremism and terrorism.

One example of China’s historic policy of standardising rules across the country is that despite spanning five time zones, it only has a single standard Beijing time. This leads to anomalies such as Kashgar in the west having to follow the same time as the capital. So the sun can be shining while the clock shows 9 pm.

While the policy of brainwashing the Uighur has been widely criticised in the west as ‘cultural genocide’, Muslims have been largely silent. One reason for this hypocritical approach is the clout China wields. For Pakistan, China has been the bedrock of our foreign policy, as well as our economic saviour. It is also an important importer of Saudi and Iranian oil. And other developing Muslim countries have benefited from Chinese aid and loans. All these factors have served to mute criticism of Beijing’s assault on Uighur religion and culture.

But just as important is the pivotal role Xinjiang is expected to play in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Roads and railway lines from various points around the world will carry thousands of containers, and China is nervous about any disruption caused by separatist groups. It has already seen how such terrorism can affect infrastructure projects in Balochistan.

China denies that it is trying to brainwash the Muslim population of Xinjiang, but government spokesmen have admitted to a policy of training and educating the young. In many cases, children have been separated from parents to be placed in these centres where they are indoctrinated and forced to learn Mandarin Chinese. More and more, a single, monolithic Han culture is being forced on minorities. Muslims, in particular, are at the sharp end of this policy.

Xinjiang means ‘new frontier’, and was given this name when the vast region was conquered by the Qing dynasty in the 18th century after a series of bloody battles. However, this conquest was resisted by warlords who regained control of various areas from time to time. In fact, for a short time, they set up the Republic of East Turkestan.

Since then, there has been friction between Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang, and Beijing. And as the stakes have risen, so has the level of repression. Electronic surveillance has been a key element in this crackdown. Locals have been forced to hand over mobile phones so that their sim cards can be read by the police. Security forces at innumerable check posts stop and search locals and foreigners alike, and CCTV cameras check their photographs against a central databank.

The victims of these human rights violations have no right of appeal. China is a one-party dictatorship. In its long history, there hasn’t been a single period when democracy was practised. To a large extent, people accept a strong central government that has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty in a single generation.

But the attitude of the ummah is surprising: both on the left and right, Muslims have been like the proverbial ostriches.

Poor Irfan mian is confused for no reason. The explanation is quite simple: if you criticise China, you'd better be prepared for serious pushback. China doesn't take kindly to criticism, and they don't really care about this bullcr@p of "the angry Muslim street". Besides that, this talk of the "Ummah" is pure fiction, something that is often spoken of, but never proven to actually exist. Like the Loch Ness Monster or the Abominable Snowman.

Someone on this forum (I'm sorry I don't remember who) said, a few days ago: Muslim anger is highly overrated. If they get mad at you and you push back, they back off meekly. China knows this and acts accordingly.
