Do we have the ability as of now to produce high strength carbon fibres (T-700/T-800/T-1000) in quantity? That would be required if we needed to make efficient solid motors with high chamber pressure. Saurav Jha once tweeted that the reason for sticking to steel motor casings for first stages was lack of production capabilities for such fibres.

These things take time. Getting a distressed acquisition to start up is hard, plus they are looking at improvements, modifications for max cost-effectiveness.Vips wrote:I remember posting on the forum on what i thought was exciting news of Reliance taking over Kemrock 2-3 years back. FY2018-19 reportVipul Shah, COO, Petrochemical Division, Reliance Industries, said the company will soon start its carbon fibre plant, which will boost India’s composites industry’s future in sectors such as rail and infrastructure.
Reliance Industries plans to make low-cost and high-volume composite products like modular toilets, building material and composites for windmill blades and rotor blades.
Reliance is also developing capabilities for 3D printing of a wide range of plastic and metals products. It plans to produce graphene, enhanced plastics, elastomers and fibre-reinforced composites that can replace steel.

The application area of each alloy is gun barrels of howitzer & Arjun tank, Armour , Piping and heat exchangers, structural forgings, missile control systems and components for Nirbhay missile respectively. In Space sector, the alloys are ultra high strength steel, nickel base super alloys and cobalt base super alloys. The application areas are motor casing of satellite launch vehicles (PSLV and GSLV), semi cryo-engine parts and high strength fasteners. For the Aeronautical sector, MIDHANI offers high strength beta titanium alloys and carburizing steel. The application areas are air frame structures, landing gear & compressor disc and helicopter transmission assembly.Meanwhile for the Energy sector, the Company has developed super alloys and hot erosion resistance alloys. These alloys are meant for AUSC power applications & reactivity control mechanism and thermal power applications.
On the other hand, in the Commercial sector, the alloy developed by MIDHANI is ferro titanium. Its application is in the area of de-oxidation and alloy making.

Really nice article about Midhani's achievements. I would not have guessed 500 distinct alloys produced by them! ( maybe 20-30 if i were asked ) Interestingly, they are downplaying or not even mentioning maraging steel. It was a major breakthrough when it was announced in the late 80s/early 90s. Or was it not Midhani, but ISRO, DRDO or SAIL that made the said breakthrough?

In this context, especially wrt food aid to India by US right from '49-'50 and the far-reaching effects of not being self-sustaining in basics is made abundantly clear in this -

When the question of food aid to India was brought up by the US president to Congress, it was supported by many. But also opposed by many due to JLN's opposition to UN manouvering by the US to call PRC as the aggressor in the Korean War. End result - much back and forth over whether to call it free aid, loan etc. Finally, pound of flesh to be extracted - Strategic critical raw material export from India as recompense for food grain aid. They had an eye on monazite & thorium but India had already banned their exports. I haven't been able to find out what we did end up exporting instead.
But is a great example to show why fixing the economy and talking to R&D to know what is important is key.

Indian Army Soldiers Can Now Bathe Without Water In Siachen-Like Conditions; Company Develops Waterless Shampoo
Puneet Gupta learned about the tough environmental conditions at Siachen, while working with defence personnel who had been posted there. He then decided to find a solution to it and ended up starting Clensta, a waterless personal hygiene solution.
This solution will be able to enable soldiers who brave extreme cold temperatures to take a bath or wash their hair without using a single drop of water.
“I examined the hygienic situation of a soldier and the challenge of not bathing for days faced during their duty in places with extreme conditions like Siachen, Kargil or Drass. After witnessing their difficulty in maintaining personal, I decided to develop waterless technology products, leading to the establishment of Clensta,” says Gupta.
Talking about the product, Gupta said, “Its advanced gel-based cleansing formula not only removes dirt, oil, and grease completely, but also provides anti-microbial properties, removes body odour and maintains the pH of the skin and keeps it moisturized.”
Clensta was developed with IIT-Delhi and Gupta said that the products, indigenously manufactured under the Make in India and Swachh Bharat Scheme, have been dermatological tested and approved under FDA.

This is really cool stuff! Can be used in space stations too. Possibly carried as emergency packs in ships, subs, cruise-liners etc. And for hikers, mountaineers.
