Both spelling and pronunciation are different for those two towns.

MH - amraavati or even umraavati
AP - amaraavathi, now amaraavati
Thanks Vayutuvan ji. I'm mistaken too on Amravati, MH.

Amravati, MH:
The ancient name of Amravati is "Audumbaravati", in Prakrit, "Umbravati". The variant "Amravati" is the presently accepted name. It is said that Amravati is named for its ancient Ambadevi temple. [from wikipedia]

Amaravati, AP:
The recorded history of Amaravathi and nearby Dharanikota dates to the 5th century BCE. It is a town said " a continuous history of at least 2,300 years."[15] It was the capital of Satavahanas who ruled from the 3rd century BCE to the 3rd century CE. [from wikipedia]

Amaravati, AP, is derived from Amareshwara Swamy temple.

Vatika/Vati/Wat/Wada = house/place/area
Amara + Vati => Amaravati (Amareshwara house/place)
Angkor + Wat ==> Angkorwat (unless there is different derivation from Khmer)
Vijaya + Wada ==> Vijayawada (Or Pali influenced Bejawada/Bezawada = Bijay + Wada)

CM Jagan Reddy delivers big on his poll promises. Only the ones that aren’t about Christians remain to be fulfilled
The government has promised sops to farmers of the state, but, none of those promises materialized in the state budget. In the manifesto, the party announced YSR Rythu Bharosa scheme Rs 12,500 to Rs one lakh to each farmer, annually. In the last five months, not a single decision for the upliftment of farmers has been taken.

His party also promised for full reimbursement fee and an additional benefit of 20,000 rupees to each student. As per the manifesto, the total expenditure to per student will be 1-1.5 lakhs rupees. None of these benefits have been delivered to students so far. Instead of delivering on these promises, the Andhra government has decided to spend thousands of crores to convert government schools to English medium from Telugu- the mother tongue of the state.

The promises made to other ‘sections’ of the community- like pension for poor elderly people, financial assistance to disabled, 1 lakh rupees to women from SC, ST, backward class, and minority community, who are aged above 45, have not found place in this years’ budget.

On 12th July, the newly elected Andhra Pradesh government led by Jagan Reddy presented its annual budget. In the budget presented by Buggana Rajendranath, Minister for Finance, the Jagan Reddy government announced honorarium to Imams is to be enhanced to Rs 10,000 per month and of Mouzzans to Rs. 5,000 per month. Similarly, it is proposed to provide Pastors with an honorarium Rs. 5,000 per month.

Later, a few weeks ago, Minorities Welfare Department Principal Secretary Mohd Ilyas Rizvi announced enhanced the financial assistance to Christians for undertaking the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and other Biblical places and it said that pilgrims with an annual income of up to Rs 3 lakh would be given Rs 60,000 for a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jordan River, Dead Sea and Sea of Galilee and those with an income of over Rs 3 lakh would get Rs 30,000, up from Rs 20,000.

Reddy again stroked controversy as he undertook an extravagant trip to Jerusalem with his family, which was of course on taxpayer’s money the Andhra Pradesh government for releasing funds to the tune of Rs 22.52 lakh on chief minister’s security on the four-day visit.

A few months ago, the Andhra government issued tickets to travelers from Tirupati to the temple town of Tirumala with advertisements of Haj and Jerusalem pilgrimage on the back. Travelers seem to have been agitated by this development and they reportedly raised the issue before the regional manager who stated that a bundle with printed material about non-Hindu pilgrimage had wrongly come to Tirupati.

The government is preparing to deliver on the few other manifesto promises to the Christian community- like plots and house construction for pastors, and financial assistance of Rs 1 lakh for wedding of Christian girls. It seems that the government is hell-bent to deliver on all promises to his religious fellows, but, at the cost of other community.

The Reddy government is pushing the state into financial bankruptcy to appease the Christian community. Almost 33 per cent of Andhra’s total receipt comes from borrowings, and a substantial chunk of total collection goes in debt reserving. The Reddy has not taken a single for financial prudence, instead, the state is spending like there is no tomorrow.

And you know what? Shameless main stream media in Kerala was trying to say that the murderer was from Assam. His name exposed his religion, but they tried to downplay the country of origin. And this is the second gruesome murder done by Bangladeshi illegals in two months. The first were an old couple. Not just that, in WB the infiltration is too easy and they get easily mised with local people. It seems they have huge network with active support from Didi for that. But in WB, BJP may have a chance to win politically. That is not there in KL due to large communist vote base and also huge EJ vote base.

BJP is going to have a tough time in southern states no matter how much in denial some of the people are, RSS is doing good, and country is in danger are not enough.

If BJP wants Hindu votes and YCP the Christian votes, it is highly unlikely YCP would lose as the numbers work in their favor.

The one chance BJP had to help AP, they lost it and wanted to either cannibalize TDP or wait to be friends with YCP, that’s how politics work, and there was nothing what is good for people of AP OR GOOD FOR India - if they could not do well with CBN, not sure who can they work with in India or any claims of want to develop India of BJP in my opinion fall pretty flat.

I do understand people have their own motivations to love or hate CBN or Jagan, but that is a poor excuse not to have development in the state. BJP has been brutal to AP and also to Telangana and would continue to be so, if you understand the method they follow. No seats no money and no development. Tough choice for the local parties unless another strong pole emerges.

BJP is the new Congress.

What are you smoking ? It was CBN who went away from BJP not the other way round. It was CBN who never allowed BJP to grow in AP using his clan connections with Venkayya. His propaganda that BJP did not do anything for AP is just that, a propaganda. See below.

BJP has been brutal to Andhra ? Who sanctioned all the central institutes to AP ? Who Sanctioned funds for Polavaram and Amaravati ? Is it BJP's fault that corrupt CBN wanted to loot Polavaram funds by inflating the costs and convert Amaravati development into real estate business for his coterie ?

Yeah right, you have nothing but regurgitating the silly arguments that few BJP hard core has been saying, what do you think people of AP are dumb that BJP has done so much for them and the ungrateful people did not vote for Mahan BJP?

Few central institutions, that too less that what was written in the bifurcation act, is that something BJP’s benevolence? What do you think people from AP are beggars and are asking for alms or should they get what they deserve?

Even dilly dallying on the funds funds for Polavaram and Amaravathi even when TDP was in alliance? And laughing at the idea of Amaravati, as if people of AP do not deserve to have dreams or visions, as long numbers for BJP are met, and they knew that it was either CBN or Jagan that have to support them, so no need to spend money for that. As long as there is no other pole in Indian politics BJP will continue to milk these regional parties.

And what nonsense are you peddling that TDP did not alloww BJP to grow? Can anyone stop anyone else in political sphere, and also why should they? So you are saying TDP did not allow the BJP to do a Shivsena on them, oh yes how rude of them right.

People can be in denial all they want, hardly changes reality.

what cbn wanted would have wreaked havoc in the states of TN and KAR.

cbn knew this better than anyone else. He came several times to KAR without the invitation or even the knowledge of the state govt and started to canvass local industries to move to AP.

such ill conceived ideas will never make him welcome anywhere.

What he did to ABA is public knowledge.

The new BJP will not forget nor forgive.

what was the urgent need for such vast works in amravati, it would have been much better to start slow and grow organically.

now that jagan is taking his revenge and practically drinking cbn's blood, cbn suddenly remembers the BJP once again.

what happened to fighting jagan politically.

if jagan says that he wants to move the capital to his village, there is nothing that cbn or Modi can do. AS will very happily amend the map once again.

The people have elected jagan and given him a majority.

as it says in their book: as you make your bed, so shall you lie upon it.

added later:

FWIW, I deeply detest the partisan politics and the immoral opportunism of jagan and cbn, both are greedy, entitled, dynastic politicos, treating the state as their personal property.

Six of one and half a dozen of the other.

TDP's yellow media made sure AP people are dumb. They can rival Xinhua and Pravda any day. And what silly arguments ? The charade of special status, TDP's (and YSRCPs) propaganda around it, the reality of what BJP gave to AP, and how AP leaders squandered 5 years with their corruption and infighting are all there in front of our eyes.
venkat_r wrote:Few central institutions, that too less that what was written in the bifurcation act, is that something BJP’s benevolence? What do you think people from AP are beggars and are asking for alms or should they get what they deserve?
You are peddling the yellow media line to the T. No other govt gave as many central institutes to AP as BJP gave. These TDP people are like "what did BJP gave us" and when you list them , they will come back with nonsense like "Are we asking alms, are we beggars" ? You can never convince them rationally. Good riddance that AP people gave them a tight slap in the last election.
venkat_r wrote:Even dilly dallying on the funds funds for Polavaram and Amaravathi even when TDP was in alliance? Polavaram is central project . It will be completed anyway in batches with Center's funds . Why did CBN wanted to do it himself if not to loot the funds ? Just because CBN asked for more funds for polavaram (with no justification), Center should release it without due diligence ? And Amaravati is nothing but Bramaravati. Naya Raipur was constructed with same amount of funds which Center gave. Why cant Amaravati be constructed similarly ? CBN sold grandiose dreams to AP people to build another Mumbai in AP and wanted Center to foot the bill . And in the process he wanted to loot those center funds. Is it fair ? You start small and then expand year by year, not the other way round. Thats building capital city 101. Even now, TDP did not give any convincing answer where did all the funds given by center went . Isnt that what YSRCP is also saying and wanted a CBI inquiry for it ? AP people are convinced that TDP is a corrupt party which looted funds meant for capital city and that is why TDP including pappu Nara Lokesh lost in capital city region as well.

Are you sleeping all these years ? Are you not aware of slimy CBN's machinations during NDA1 ? Are you not aware of how CBN who has been part of NDA made BJP the scapegoat for all his anti incumbency that has crept in and diverting the anti factor to Modi by building the narrative of his party being the victim ? But Ganesha was watching everything and CBN had to pay the price for his karma.

So you're sure on TDP goondas did it in the past. In reverse case you're sure it is not YCP or BJP Goondas did it. Even if we assume it is not Goondas, you're damn sure it is not YCP or BJP's own "Devuni Biddalu" or "sarkari biddalu" or "Rs 200/hour protest renters" did it. :rotfl:

BJP has no electoral prospects in AP and yet it did everything whatever it could for the development of AP and never discriminated against AP as CBN/TDP people lied. What did CBN and TDP do ? They put their own stickers on central schemes, wasted 5 years with graphics and corruption and yellow media and when anti-incumbency rose and Jagan's prospects rose, they made BJP the fall guy.

Old habits die hard. So CBN with the help of his clan connections with Venkayya is again meddling in AP BJP. Hope Amit Shah does not make past mistakes and Venkayya should not be allowed anywhere and anything related to AP BJP. Also interesting that the Kamma lobby in BJP (Venkayya/Sujana) are pushing the name of Vishnuwardhan Reddy (a Reddy, and supposedly a YSRCP sympathizer before his elevation in BJP ) in opposition to the Kapu lobby (Kanna). Or at least that the version we are hearing from Kanna/Kapu lobby.

Elections to BJP Andhra President post exposes internal rivalry
A loyalist close to Kanna Lakshmi Narayana told TNM, “We are working hard to improve the state BJP at the ground level. But recently a senior veteran who was the ex-national president of BJP and an ex- central minister met Amit Shah and said that we are ruining the party.” The source claimed that the veteran leader was pushing Vishnu Vardhan Reddy’s name for BJP state President. “For him it’s about caste,” he alleged, claiming that BJP’s fortunes in Andhra were sacrificed for the TDP.

.....

But after the TDP’s rout in the Andhra Assembly Elections, former Chief Minister and TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu has been trying to repair his relationship with the BJP. BJP insiders allege Naidu is using his clout within the party to try and influence its internal election. The aim is to elect a state president who is favourable to him.

“The veteran leader who is close to Naidu is suggesting the name of Vishnu Vardhan Reddy. Sunil Deodhar, the party’s state co in-charge and those close to him are suggesting Sujana Chowdary. The old guard of the party led by Somu Veerraju is suggesting the name of MLC PNV Madhav,” alleged the aide close to Lakshmi Narayana. “Since the TDP party is over in Andhra, Naidu wants Lakshmi Narayana out of the president post or move to Delhi, so that he can run BJP through a proxy,” alleged the source.

Speaking to TNM, Sujana Chowdary denied that he had suggested anyone’s name or was involved in trying to undermine the present BJP state President’s efforts to secure a second term. “100% no. I have not suggested anyone’s name to anyone. I am only an organisation man and observer for the state, all leaders new and old are equal for me.”

While the leader stated that the post of president will be based on election and cannot be predicted, he also stated, “It is the call of Amit Shah and other leaders who will decide who becomes the President.” Speaking about the alleged efforts by Naidu to try and influence the elections in the AP BJP, he said, “Naidu should try to first save his own party before trying to divide other parties, he has no stake within the BJP anymore.”

AP BJP always sacrificed for TDP by Kamma lobby. Now that it is trying to go alone CBN is trying to get into NDA again to play the same drama. Kanna at least was not in CBN take as far as I know. Two best things happen to BJP in AP was Venkayya going out of active politics and AS deciding not to allow CBN to comeback to NDA.

Looks like at least now BJP leadership in Delhi realised the CBN and Kamma lobby activities are harmful to them. Hope that good sense continues in future.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu BJP is in even worst position compared to AP BJP.

Wanted – A President for the Tamil Nadu BJP
It has been two and a half months since the incumbent president of the Tamil Nadu unit of the BJP, Dr Tamilisai Soundarrajan was appointed as Governor of Telangana. Ever since, the BJP that has more leaders than cadre, is struggling to find a leader to head its Tamil Nadu wing.
The hurry in moving Tamilisai out of Chennai seemed to suggest that New Delhi had a replacement in mind. On the contrary, the BJP high command has been finding it hard to find a replacement for her. With local body elections round the corner and the BJP planning to make it big in Tamil Nadu, the absence of a chief for its Tamil Nadu wing is jarring.

The names of leaders like CP Radhakrishnan, Vanathi Srinivasan, Karuppu Muruganandam, H Raja, KP Muruganandam, Pon Radhakrishnan, Thirupathy Narayanan, KT Raghavan have been spoken of as possible contenders. But the party high command does not seem to be satisfied with any of the names and is looking for a new face.

“The party high command is dissatisfied with almost all leaders in the state. It is of the opinion that in spite of a friendly government in the state, the party is not able to grow in the state in the past three years. The party’s dismal performance in the Lok Sabha polls has also irked the high command. Since Tamilisai is from the Nadar community, another leader from Nadar community is ruled out. That means Pon Radhakrishnan does not have a chance to become President,” said a BJP leader who did not want to be identified.

He is right. Caste equations of course, are important in Indian politics. Tamil Nadu being a state with strong anti-Brahmin and Dravidian roots, a Brahmin leader to head the party in the state may prove counter-productive.

Sources in the BJP say the party’s national leadership is also aware that Pon Radhakrishnan during his meeting with Rajinikanth on 6 November 2019, lobbied with him for the top job in the party unit and reportedly asked Rajini to put in a word with Amit Shah for him. Radhakrishnan also told the high command that he had extended invitation to Rajinikanth to join the BJP. A couple of days later, a peeved Rajinikanth distanced himself with BJP, saying “Attempts to saffronise both Thiruvalluvar and me will not be successful.” Rajinikanth’s statement put the BJP leaders in an embarrassing position because they all along treated Rajini as a fellow traveller.

Post Tamilisai Soundararajan’s exit, the entire party seems to have hijacked by social media trolls.

True. We have our own “Kamma lobby” within BRF advocating for the Snake Babu. They want BJP to win everywhere else, except AP. Caste trumps everything. So BJP “cheated” Andhra. Didn’t give funds for Polavaram and Amtavathi etc. etc. pathetic.

I won't comment on caste politics.

But there was immense hatred manufactured against Modi ji & BJP by the TDP leadership during run up to the 2019 polls. Unprecedented hatred.

AP was the only state where PM Modi was greeted with BLACK FLAGs post-Balakot strikes at a time when the entire country was celebrating his courageous decision in protecting our borders.

Nobody can forget Chandranna's anti-national stances post Pulwama attack and how the TDP Social media cell was instructed to support the Commie/Congress/Paki version of Balakot.

Many TDP folks went overboard to post facebook messages supporting Pakistani version of Pulwama that Modi himself killed Indian soldiers to get sympathy.

Should we just give them a free pass for their treachery ?

Never. The hate which we have seen for almost two-three years is unprecedented. People who are known to me and who are reasonable people all were extremely hateful of BJP and talking all kinds of rubbish. Now trying to escape.

Actually this is a pretty standard question for the cops in Hyderabad from my experience. Seems this is a very common reason why young women go "missing" and come back a few days later after getting married to someone.
The same question was asked to our maids family when their 15-16 year old daughter went missing, she had run off with a boy she had met and the parents did not approve of. The mother told us that she would have never run off after which I contacted a senior IPS officer that I knew and he called the local CI to push the investigation along. She was traced a few days later with the cell phone of the guy and they got her just in time, the guy was part of a trafficking gang and the deal was already made to sell her off.
This happened about 7-8 years ago.
Its a sad situation for the cops, most are highly stretched out already having 14 - 15 hour duty days. Recently a local activist put a case in the SC asking it to direct the govt to not ask the cops to work such high number hours a day. Seems they have been working 7 days a week and are on call 24 hours a day.

True, and this is where mistakes get made which eventually results in some technicality that the defence lawyers use to get their clients off. If I were to work 14-15 hours a day in the field and also work weekends, I too would be grumpy to everyone, and end up with health issues on top of it. So who'd want to opt for such work as a career choice?

Sometimes I feel the govt establishment (not political) itself is not serious about fighting crime. I have hardly heard many IPS officers themselves ask for an increase in staffing levels, better facilities and resources, duty hours, etc.

Maybe Sachin saar can share some insights on this?

Police - even though it looks like a glamorous job is a very stressful one. The Police Act, 1861 still is the base act under which all Indian police forces operate. And the Act is very clear on one thing; a police man is assumed to be on duty 24/7. So this may be only government department where a police man is generally taking a "permission" to move away from his jurisdictional area. Other department staff don't take "permission" but "apply for leave". A day off is generally called a "permission" (to be away from the PS and be on rest).

India may be the only country where the "cutting edge" of a police force have a working arrangement which forces them to maintain "two households". In India, the crucial ranks in the police force are 1) Sub Inspector 2) Inspector. These officials are eligible to be transferred to any station or post in a state within a matter of hours. There is no minimum or maximum limit on the tenure (in present PS/Post), the distance to reach the new PS/Post location. So in many cases these officers have to establish a household for their family at a more convenient location (so that wife's job, kid's school etc. is smooth) and also stay away at a different place with some basic comfort. This "two household" life style itself triggers a lot of problems. It is in such situations that many officers slowly get involved in shady activities, or have concubines etc. Being the cutting edge of the force, these officials also have lots of discretionary powers which can be misused. And any mis-adventure here will also make the official liable for blackmail by the political class ;).

A person visiting a doctor (in Govt. service) essentially would be willing to tell the truth to him. Govt. offices, hospitals etc sees a large foot fall. But generally people who come there would be willing to be truthful. They are there to get a work done, and would bring in the necessary proof for the same. Where as a police station sees a more wide variety of crowd, and a much more "shady" characters. The line between an honest petitioner and a shady chap coming with a false compliant is very thin. Take for example, the woman who insisted that her daughter will never run away with any one. It is her belief, and it is that what media etc. high lights. But a police man from experience knows that the girl was very much in contact with the man/boy and at least the initial part of elopement was by mutual understanding (the later part of human trafficking may not have been known to the girl). Now if the police officer tells this to the mother, she and the media folks would hound him.

In court rooms more smart people can debate on the law points for years. But in police stations people approach demanding instance justice. A techie in Bengaluru comes crying saying that some one just ran away with his iPhone. He expects the entire station crowd to just run out of the PS and patrol the city to catch the pick pocket. The very next complainant comes with a petition saying that his "very good & cultured daughter is missing". He also expects the entire station strength to jump into their jeeps looking for the girl. So every one expects rapid response and instance justice from the Police (but not from the courts). And as a police man friend once told me; "Even the most brilliant person generally will NOT advice a doctor on how to perform a surgery, but even the dumbest person will have an expert advice for police men investigating a case".

Now to answer the moot question. Why should any one join such a department. The reason is simple. The department still have a big say in public life. For a simple graduate (for SIs and Inspectors) to a 10th Std pass; this may be the only job which gives them a large share of power and command over people. And this is also a job which gives a steady source of income. And this is also a job where money can also be made on the side. And the police man do not need to go demanding bribes, Indian system has a way to ensure that it reaches him on time :). As they say there are "vegetarian" police men (who will not actively demand bribe, but is willing to take it when offered), and also "non-vegetarian" police men (who generally are ruthless, and also very keen on demanding bribes).
