RohitVats, have you thought about doing an article on what effect this new infrastructure being built in Ladakh and the NE (there are some projects recently completed and several more under construction I believe) will have on the IA's deployment picture against the Chinese in both theaters? I haven't seen a comprehensive article about the subject and can't think of anyone better to write it (short of some retired IA general who has served there).

Enhanced capacity to reach last point at China border, created 25 new border out posts: ITBP DG SS Deswal.

Addressing reporters on the eve of the 58th Raising Day of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), its Director General (DG) S S Deswal said the "status quo" at the 3,488-km LAC between India and China is maintained and that the paramilitary force is making efforts to have "better capacity" than the neighbour.

The ITBP was raised in the aftermath of the 1962 Chinese aggression under the Union home ministry and apart from its primary task of guarding the LAC, it renders a variety of internal security duties.

The ITBP, guarding the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China, has “enhanced” its capacity to reach up to the farthest border point and added 25 posts in the past five years to ensure effective preparedness on this icy front marred by perceptional difference of the borderline, a top official said on Wednesday.

Addressing reporters on the eve of the 58th Raising Day of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), its Director General (DG) S S Deswal said the “status quo” at the 3,488-km LAC between India and China is maintained and that the paramilitary force is making efforts to have “better capacity” than the neighbour.

Asked about the number of incidents of transgressions or incursions by the Chinese PLA troops in the recent past, Deswal refused to give absolute numbers but said the Indian side is “as aggressive” as the Chinese. “We are continuously increasing border posts, we have increased patrolling and in the last five years we have created 25 new border out posts or BOPs,” Deswal said. He added each BOP was a “company level strength”, meaning about a hundred troops.

In the last 5-6 years, ITBP has had “rapid improvement” in infrastructure and roads in these border areas. In the first phase, 11 roads totalling 270 km have been completed and in the second phase, 45 roads with a length of 1,033 km will be completed in the coming months, said the DG, who heads the about 90,000 personnel strong mountain-warfare trained force.

“We are also upgrading our surveillance technology at the border and we have created a lot of infrastructure, border roads, BOPs and have sent high-powered vehicles at high-altitude posts on this front,” he said. The mechanism (vis-a-vis interaction with the Chinese troops) at the border is “perfect” and the border is absolutely safe and secure, he added.

To a question if any standoff was reported between the two sides after the recent informal summit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese premier Xi Jinping at Mamallapuram, the DG said that national security and diplomatic efforts are “delinked” and should be seen in that context.

“Irrespective of these things, we remain on alert and in a state of continuous guard,” Deswal said. The ITBP was raised in the aftermath of the 1962 Chinese aggression under the Union home ministry and apart from its primary task of guarding the LAC, it renders a variety of internal security duties.

Per local sources from Kupwara, civilians in Awoora Manwan, and Panzgam villages are evacuating their homes and moving to safer places. Multiple civilians feared injured. Massive clashes going on at LoC in Tangdhar, Kupwara. Why isn’t Indian army/ media reporting this? #Kashmir

I must give credit to the bravery of Pak fauj and Pak public. Ebil Bharat is throwing bumb at them and they seem to not care. Infact unlike Bhartiya fauj they don't even give a count of the dead. What a qaum of true satyagrahis!

Why would we? Don't want to ruffle any international feathers and roepen the aid spigots to pakfauj. We deny the pakis their posts/territory, maybe even hold on to the vacated posts, but don't try to formally redefine the LoC. This gives them the punishment they keep asking for; hopefully the captured posts are strategically significant/advantageous for us, and we scare the monkey (China) by killing the chicken (Pak) in its CPEC efforts.

Also we ensure that the scarce govt resources are entirely focused on fighting India in Kashmir instead of being frittered away on haram things like roads, public health, education, welfare and development of industry.

Because GoI is trying to make counter terror operations as pre-emptive and routine.. Action being taken at Strategic, tactical and overt levels.
Problem with reactive is that - TSP will control our reactions (big attack = big GoI response). . GoI has to break that cycle.
The war is lot more deeper than what is played out in the media and GOI is taking the fight to the enemy at multiple levels. It's now just a question of time to see who breaks first. TSP signalled they may open a new dimension to the fight.

GOI is still not going for the jugular or the big arteries - just enough to force policy change not total revolution.

All you need to know about the Rohtang Tunnel.

The Rohtang Tunnel, when complete, will cut through the mighty Pir Panjal range and become the world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet. For now, the tunnel provides a temporary winter link to the outside world not only to residents of Lahaul and Spiti but also to those living in Zanskar Valley of Ladakh. Without this link, opened on humanitarian grounds for Himachal Roadways bus service and some emergency vehicles, these villagers would have remained cut off for the next six months.

The tunnel will officially be ready for inauguration by September 2020 only. One of the most prestigious tunnel projects in the country, the work is monitored by the Prime Minister’s Office. PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the project once complete. The tunnel is expected to be named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who took a keen interest in the project during his tenure, and was also a regular visitor to Manali.

A 3,000-member team of contractual workers and 650 regular employees of the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) have been working in shifts through 24 hours on the project. It would have been completed at least four years earlier, but for a massive torrent of water encountered inside the tunnel. The Seri Nullah, which flows on top of the tunnel, almost threatened to derail the project and it took several years to devise ways to tackle the massive flow of water that often went up to 140 litres per second.

The project also has significant strategic implications for the military as it will allow access beyond Rohtang Pass even in peak winters. An all-winter connectivity to Ladakh, however, is still some time away as more tunnels will have to be built to tackle the high passes which fall beyond Rohtang.

While Rohtang Pass is at a height of 13,050 feet, the pass on the road to Leh is Baralacha La at 16,040 feet. A 13.2-km long tunnel would be required to bypass this pass and a Detailed Project Report for the same is ready to be presented to the government.

Further down the highway comes Lachung La Pass at 16,800 feet requiring a 14.78 km long tunnel to provide all-weather connectivity. Thereafter falls the Tanglang La pass at 17,480 feet, which will need a 7.32-km long tunnel.

An alternate road link to Ladakh has also been developed by BRO on the Darcha-Padam-Nimu axis, but here again a 4.15-km long tunnel at Sinka La Pass (16,703 feet) would be required for all-weather access. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is making a DPR for this tunnel which will give a new road link to Leh.

Services inside Rohtang Tunnel:

*Telephone at every 150 metres

*Fire hydrant at every 60 metres

*Emergency exit at every 500 metres

*Turning cavern at every 2.2. km

*Air Quality monitoring every 1 km

*Broadcasting system

*Automatic incident detection system with CCTV every 250 metres

*Width of carriageway: 10.50 metres including one metres footpath on both sides

*Maximum speed limit: 80 km per hour

*Max Traffic expected: 3,000 petrol cars a day and 1,500 trucks a day

Tunnel sequence of events

*Cost: Rs 4083 crore sanctioned (eventual cost will be less by approx. Rs 300 crore)

*Feasibility study: May 1990

*Geological report submitted: June 1994

*Design and specification report submitted: Dec 1996

*Final technical approval: 2003

*CCS approval: 2005

*Consultant appointed: 2006

*Tenders floated: 2007

*Letter of acceptance for tender: 2009

*Foundation stone laid: July 28, 2010

*Original date of completion: Feb 1, 2015

*Expected date of completion: September 2020

The last road mentioned in the above report will improve the lateral connectivity between theaters and also give depth to Indian communication axis in the zone. Consider this:

- First road will go from a place about 30 km before Keylong in Himachal Paradesh (this is after crossing Rohtang La Pass) and connect it with Darcha in the Zanskar Valley. The road from Darcha connects with Padum, which further connects with Kargil. Padum to Kargil is 230 km.

- What this basically means that we can move reserves from Himachal Pradesh side towards Kargil Sector by bypassing Srinagar-Leh road. True, that this road will be less developed as compared to National Highway 1A but still, it gives much required option.

- Second point, from Padum, BRO is in the process of developing a road towards Nimu/Nimmo in Ladakh. This place is ~35 km before Leh.

- This road will follow the alignment of Zanskar River. Road from both sides extends some kilometers along the Zanskar river and BRO will now have to bridge the gap.

- Challenge here is that Zanskar river flows throw a very narrow gorge along most of its alignment.

- When this road develops, you can move traffic from Kargil to Leh via Padum if NH-1A comes under pressure and move traffic from HP side directly to Leh and then other sectors.

- BTW, during winters, people from Zanskar Valley travel to Leh by traveling over the frozen Zanskar River. This trek is nowadays marketed as a 'Chadar trek' as Zanskar River is covered by a 'Chadar' or sheet of ice!

Wow! Hope they make the most of it by
* Clearing away waste
* Family/igloo type places to spend time near stations

And so on.

The trek is dangerous but going by pics the potential is huge. Really beautiful scenery. Dharti pe chandra.. in reflection! That's what Ram was shown as a kid in a pot of water .. when he insisted he wants it.

the road u r mentioning is reaching neyraks village next year... even for locals in the trans senge la area, this road is v useful...what used to be almost a 10 hrs drive ( from leh towards khaltse ... making a left turn at wan la ...) will be a 3 to 4 hrs. also will make chadar trek safer with close access to a road. actually chadar trek has become increasingly dangerous because of warming, huge amounts of tourists. i think its v difficult to make igloo type accomodation on the chadar trek way because of steep cliffs and a river flowing in between ...what they should be focussing on is making good toilets...there is lot of human waste around the trek path.

as of today ..leh to padum ... one has to go to kargil then make left towards padum...a v long and ardous journey ( espicially from kargil to padum). Now with the road along zanskar, it will be much more direct. connect it to darcha>keylong and u have a much shorter route to leh from manali. will have positive impact on tourism as well.

Roads will help with it prolly, cleaning up and such tourist attractions can be built on the other side of road, too.

This is really a welcome development. I was getting sick and tired of so many avoidable casualties in COIN ops in J&K. The biggest advantage of Pak's proxy war was their use low cost manpower (terrorists) to cut down our high cost manpower (regular army soldiers). These 500 robots will nullify that cost advantage which Pak had and help save double their number in humans no doubt. Plus operational experience in fielding robots in J&K will also help fielding them on the China front as well. I have once operated a gunbot in CALL OF DUTY & MEDAL OF HONOR pc games and it was a breeze gunning down the bad guys with them. We need these robots ASAP.

It was a tracked version with an MG3. (Probably a chinese made product)

One guy posing as an insider had claimed that they will have a thousand such units within a few years operating on the LOC

If pakis get 60 robots, it is more than enough.

Anyway the 1000 Pak robots are too take on the million men Indian army in Cashmere.

I suppose they will now spare 72 robots to taken on the 500 Indian robots.

Daily Excelsior update:

Over dozen Pak troops, commandos, LeT, JeM militants killed on LoC
By
Daily Excelsior -
20/12/2019
Brig Hqrs, SSG Centre, launch pads hit
Pak was plotting major intrusion bids

Sanjeev Pargal
JAMMU, Dec 19: Over a dozen Pakistan army personnel and militants including Special Services Group (SSG) commandos and Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) cadre were killed at Athmuqam, close to the Line of Control (LoC), opposite Kupwara sector where Pakistan’s Brigade Headquarters and SSG Centre were hit in retaliatory shelling and firing by the Indian side last night even as there was no let up in Pakistan shelling in Poonch and Rajouri districts where the enemy continued to target civilians.
Indian retaliatory action at Athmuqam opposite Kupwara sector of Kashmir valley was necessitated as reports were pouring in that large number of LeT and JeM militants had gathered there and were planning infiltration into the Indian side under covering fire from the Pakistani troops.
While there was no official word by the Indian Army on heavy damages suffered by the Pakistani troops at Athmuqam overnight, credible inputs revealed that Pakistan’s Brigade Headquarters was hit and badly damaged in the Indian retaliation that lasted about two hours. Pakistan’s SSG wing office was also housed in the same complex and it was too reported to have been damaged.
Over a dozen Pakistan army personnel, SSG commandos and militants of LeT and JeM outfits were reportedly killed in the Indian retaliation, sources said, adding that the Indian action was aimed at targeting launch pads of LeT and JeM, which were successfully hit.
The Indian side had regularly been getting reports about presence of LeT and JeM militants at the launch pads and daily ceasefire violations by the Pakistan army were aimed at facilitating the infiltration attempts, sources said, adding the pro-active action by the Army has thwarted Pakistani plot to push militants into the Kashmir valley for large scale disturbances.
However, there were no reports of any casualties on the Indian side.
On December 16, two Army jawans were martyred while two Pakistani troops and three infiltrators were killed in the Indian retaliation along the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir.
There were reports that Pakistan has kept artillery guns in Kotli area of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) for their further deployment at the LoC across twin border districts of Poonch and Rajouri which have been witnessing regular ceasefire violations by the Pakistani troops.
Pakistan army today again targeted forward defence posts and civilian areas in Mankote sector of Poonch and Nowshera sector of Rajouri district drawing very effective retaliation by the Indian side. Heavy exchange of firing between the two sides lasted about one and a half hour.
However, no casualties or damage were reported on the Indian side while reports of losses suffered by the Pakistani troops were awaited.
Pakistan army, as usual, directly targeted civilian locations but there was no casualty as the people hid themselves inside bunkers and houses well in time. The LoC has been witnessing regular skirmishes between Indo-Pak troops since August 5 when the Central Government had scrapped special Constitutional provisions of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated the State into two Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.
Only yesterday, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Gen Bipin Rawat had stated that situation can escalate along the LoC any time and that the Army was prepared for it. Meanwhile, a PoK resident has been arrested along the LoC in Nowshera sector of Rajouri district and booked under the Egress and Internal Movement (Control) Ordinance (EIMCO) Act, sources said.
Mohammad Sayeed, a resident of Sabzikote in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, was captured by the Army three days ago from Nowshera sector while he was trying to sneak into this side. After initial questioning by the Army, the infiltrator was handed over to Nowshera police station where a case was registered against him, sources said. The case was registered under Section 2/3 of EIMCO Act. No increment material was recovered from his possession but authorities were probing his motive to infiltrate into Nowshera sector, sources said.

^^ Excellent change of strategy. We are hitting their launchpads pre-emptively using artillery. This is Surgical Strike version N - continuous, pro-active hits against the enemy.

Hope we continue to have artillery overmatch vis-a-vis the Pakis. This is why developments like the precision guided Pinaka-MK2 with a 75Km range is so important. More than a real war, they are amazingly useful in a sub-conventional war. Create a 75Km swath killzone!

Very disappointing. It is this type of 'Gandhigiri' which shows us in poor light to the Pakis and makes them think they can walk over for a picnic anytime they want. This guy should have had a bomb placed in his stomach and sent back across the fence. Instead, now we have another 'mehmaan' who will enjoy our 'mehmaannawaazi' for god knows how long. Our forces need to develop a ruthless image to deal with this b*******s, pussyfooting like this will only be asking for more trouble.

That way, after we hit a target the the first rocket, the loitering rocket will takeout the 'cover up team' which comes to paint over the holes on the target like they did in Balakote! :rotfl:

Make it 50 Kms loitering rocket as today we have had another Pinaka successfully tested at 90 Kms. :rotfl:

Mohammad Sayeed, a resident of Sabzikote in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, was captured by the Army three days ago from Nowshera sector while he was trying to sneak into this side. After initial questioning by the Army, the infiltrator was handed over to Nowshera police station where a case was registered against him, sources said. The case was registered under Section 2/3 of EIMCO Act. No increment material was recovered from his possession but authorities were probing his motive to infiltrate into Nowshera sector, sources said.
Sajaymji, the wording of the article is very PC. I do not believe that it is an enjoyable experience to be "detained" or "handed over" etc. It is well-known that many jehadis do a final float back into Pakistan via Sutlej etc, with head floating separately from torso. You just don't read about them.
