Basically to fire rubber bullets.
This is Ishapore riot shotgun conversion from SMLE.
Not just the British, India too adopted SMLE in 7.62 NATO. Around the China war, when FAL were just being adopted, the rate of production of fn FAL was not high enough. It was decided to equip reserves with 7.62 NATO version of SMLE MkIII. The British version was based on SMLE mk IV and featured much better sights. Also the .303. round is/will be phased out.
The British refurbished some of these SMLE rifles with 7.62mm barrels and made sniper rifles out of them.
But don't know the value.
Ishapore 2A - SMLE MkIII
Ishapore 2A1 - SMLE MKIII in 7.62X51.
Ishapore 2A1 can be distinguished by rectangular magazine and square front sight posts. The butt plate is aluminium instead of Brass.
Here's Gun Jesus with Ishapore Mk1A.
They were sold in US civilian market for as low as $50. They were popular with some competition shooters due to cheaper ammo than .303 and mad minute capabilities of Smle.
Ishapore 2A1 was the last bolt action rifle to be issued to standard infantry. We made between 3-4 lakh of them.

The shortened AKM has been named TAR carbine as per OFB info board.
Also the current JVPC has been referred to as JVPC Alpha, maybe another version is in works.

AK-203 Rifle manufacturing plan is stuck as Russians are now demanding more money to agree to 100% TOT. AS usual upto their usual trick - first get the contract and then demand more money. Ass H--es!
No need to submit to the blackmail. Try out the 7.62 MM rifles from OFB and Pvt Sector player SSS.

Isn't the current JVPC a different caliber (non-standard; meant for CQB)? This one is listed as using standard NATO ammo, and that is why it is probably listed as a new weapon with the 'Alpha' added to differentiate.Thakur_B wrote: Also the current JVPC has been referred to as JVPC Alpha, maybe another version is in works.
Re: Small Armaments & Infantry Equipment - News & Discussion
The info is quite correct - it doesn't mention NATO ammo, it only says 5.56. JVPC/MSMC fires 5.56x30mm MINSAS round, whereas the NATO calibre (used in INSAS) is 5.56x45mmBart S wrote:Isn't the current JVPC a different caliber (non-standard; meant for CQB)? Great Interview with CEO of SSS Defence

https://kaypius.com/2020/02/08/exchangi ... -in-india/
In a first for a private Indian firm, Bengaluru-headquartered Stumpp Schuele & Somappa Defence (SSS Defence) stormed the indigenous arms and ammunition space with two sniper rifle prototypes: the Viper, chambered for .308/7.62x51mm cartridge, and Saber, chambered for .338 Lapua Magnum cartridge
Kaypius: How did you take the idea from scratch to prototype within such a short time?
VK: We’re all Steve Jobs fans. There’s one statement attributed to him: ” When you’re a carpenter making a beautiful chest of drawers, you’re not going to use a piece of plywood on the back, even if it faces the wall and nobody will ever see it. You’ll know it’s there, so you’re going to use a beautiful piece of wood on the back”. In solving the tech issues that was our approach. Our sniper products have been engineered for military use and we’ve obsessed over little things like anthropometry. Also, by insisting on commonality of platforms as a design ethos, we spent less time on going back to the board later. As an example, for both our sniper weapons, the chassis is almost the same with minor differences. It took longer for us to design and engineer the chassis though but we eliminated re-work in the process. Do note however that we’re not done and dusted with the sniper weapons. So, 2 years is not the end of it. The more we test, the closer we come to optimal. That is still work in progress. We were also assisted by developments in additive manufacturing that helped crash timelines. Our engineering team is nimble to move projects around the table to get a different set of eyes and skills to solve a problem.
Kaypius: Your experience of dealing with foreign partners in the early days of the project?

Sorry to digress! this is actually philosophy of Indian temple vastushilipi. I was a sculpture student back in 1980's and a temple architect said exact same. "look at any old temple - even hidden parts have same amount of details and attention. We lost it now though"
Sad we attribute everything to external party now.

This is interesting to note because US Army is also planning to procure 1,00,000 of new 6.8x43 mm rifles for limited fielding before taking a decision on standardising on the new round. The trials are expexted to start soon with all the bidders bringing in their own improved cartidge design. High res pics by Steven Rogers at DFI.
A stanag pattern Magwell (to cash upon multitude of reliable magazine designs) and bolt catch open feature on ARDE carbine would have been good to see. Meanwhile MCIWS/AAR featured those but the charging handle design was awkward.
The handguard design on both is still centered around ARDE ubgl, while the trend is to mount new pattern UBGL on lower handguard pic rails. The quick remove upper handguard do not seem to be attached on gun body with take down pins, and this design holding on to barrel/gas tube with leaf springs tends to get loose with age affecting zeroing of optics. Modern Kalashnikov guns too have more or less fixed handguards that require tools for disassemly and maintenance can be done without touching the gas tube.

AK308 uses a 7.62x51mm round, so not a direct alternative to AK203.Thakur_B wrote:It is still mind boggling why we chose Ak203 over AK308. Or AK203 over TAR/Ghatak.
My presumption is that the Army has decided to use 7.62x39 for COIN and 7.62x51 for regular infantry. Never know, we may switch to 6.8mm after a few years.

Re: Small Armaments & Infantry Equipment - News & Discussion
With the advancement in materials it is perhaps time to revisit the recoil issues of a 7.62x51.
The SLR was a different beast and modern assault rifles like the AK308 or the Galil ACE are a diff beast.
Even the FN SLR has been reporposed and modernised.
Should we open a small arms design thread?

Nagaland Police receive first consignment of Tavor X95 rifles.
The Nagaland police personnel are all set to use the assault rifles produced by the Israel Weapon Industries (IWI).
Sharing a picture of IWI Tavor X95 assault rifles being checked by a few Nagaland Police personnel, WeTheNagas, a leading digital news platform in Nagaland, tweeted: “Nagaland police is all set to add a new weapon to its armoury as the first phase consignment of Israel weapon industries (IWI) Tavor X95 assault rifles arrived in the State.”
The IWI Tavor X95, which is also called Micro-Tavor, MTAR, and MTAR-21, is an assault rifle, designed and produced by Israel Weapon Industries (IWI) as part of the Tavor rifle family, along with the TAR-21 and the Tavor 7.
The Tavor X95 can be easily distinguished by the location of its cocking handle. An X95 cocking handle is closer to the pistol grip. The Tavor X95, with the use of a relatively simple conversion kit, can be converted from a 5.56 mm assault rifle to a 9 mm submachine gun.
A media report earlier quoted Nagaland director general of police (DGP), T John Longkumer as saying that X95, the Israeli manufactured assault rifles, would replace the normal weapons used by Nagaland police personnel, such as the SLR rifles.
It was earlier reported that being the standard assault rifles of the Israeli military, upgrading to the IWI X95 will have a great advantage for the Nagaland cops during various situations as the assault rifle weighs less than 3 kg, which is one of the lightest assault rifles.
