Would China still have money to invest in CPEC and OBOR once the COVID-19 threat disappears and world slowly limps back to normalcy ?

Meanwhile Pakis are worried if China still would pay for Paki donkeys post corona :)

Me thinks they would be flush with money by "helping the world" with the sale of medical equipment, medicines, temporary filling the voids left by other industries in the countries facing shutdowns.

In the very short term China will recover faster than Europe, but that will come at a cost of further weakening their banking system. In the longer term Europe and the US will work aggressively to reduce their dependence on China.

The Terrorist Who Got Away

Well, this is a surprise. Nothing in the article is news to members or lurkers here but I am surprised the NYT published it as a prominent long read.

Extract: Despite the deadly attack in Pulwama, and the other attacks for which Jaish claims responsibility, Pakistan has refused to prosecute Azhar or bring the organization to justice. Indian officials find this galling but unsurprising, because, they contend, Inter-Services Intelligence — Pakistan’s powerful intelligence service — provides Jaish with funding, training and logistical support to fight a proxy war against India.
::
::
The impunity with which Azhar has operated for so long is a source of anger among Indian security officials. It keeps raw an old wound; it reminds them that two decades ago, they had the cleric in their grasp, languishing in one of their prisons.
::
::
The dismemberment — with its imagery of Pakistani troops surrendering to the Indian Army in Dhaka, the East Pakistani city that became the capital of Bangladesh — left a deep wound in Pakistan’s psyche, one that time has not easily healed.
::
::
On Dec. 17, 1971, the day after the surrender in Dhaka, the front page of the newspaper Dawn made no mention of it, instead running a banner headline that said: “War Till Victory.”
::
::
The Indian negotiators were led by Ajit Doval, from the Intelligence Bureau, an ex-spy who previously worked undercover in Pakistan, and C.D. Sahay, a senior officer from the Research and Analysis Win::
::
::
“The negotiation was going on between the I.S.I. and us — simple as that.”
::
::
Doval and Sahay and the rest of India were left with a haunting memory: the image of those vehicles speeding away from the airport against the rugged backdrop of the Kandahar mountains.
::
::
For years, India had battled Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in the defensive mode, Doval said, but it wasn’t good enough: “You throw 100 stones at me, I stop 90, still 10 hurt me. And I can never win.”
::
::
India’s revoking of Kashmir’s autonomy is bound to be seen by Pakistan’s military as a strategic defeat, one that I.S.I. will be plotting to avenge.
::
::
“They have an army that wants to redraw maps — an army that can’t win wars,” she told me. “These jihadi groups are the only tools they have. There’s zero, zero, zero chance that they will give up assets like Masood Azhar.”

The article says the writer applied for a visa to Pakistan to interview Azhar but was told the subject was in a hospital. To which the writer said that made things even easier and requested for a visit to be facilitated. The writer was then told "he was asking for the moon".

Paki exhibiting his Pakistaniyat.

A Pakistani doctor and former Mayo Clinic research coordinator was arrested Thursday in Minnesota on a terrorism charge, after prosecutors say he told paid FBI informants that he had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State group and wanted to carry out lone wolf attacks in the United States. Muhammad Masood, 28, was arrested at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on Thursday by FBI agents and was charged with one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

Prosecutors say Masood was in the US on a work visa. They allege that starting in January, Masood made several statements to paid informants — whom he believed were members of the Islamic State group — pledging his allegiance to the group and its leader. He also allegedly expressed his desire to travel to Syria to fight for ISIS and a desire to carry out lone wolf attacks in the US

At one point, Masood messaged an informant "there is so much I wanted to do here .. .lon wulf stuff you know ... but I realized I should be on the ground helping brothers sisters kids," according to an FBI affidavit.

Prosecutors say Masood bought a plane ticket on Feb. 21 to travel from Chicago to Amman, Jordan, and then planned to go to Syria from there. He had planned to leave at the end of March. But on March 16, he had to change his travel plans because Jordan closed its borders due to the coronavirus pandemic. Masood and one of the informants then developed a plan for him to fly from Minneapolis to Los Angeles to meet with that informant, whom Masood believed would help him travel in a cargo ship into Islamic State territory.

Masood was arrested Thursday at the airport after he checked in for his flight to Los Angeles. His attorney, Manny Atwal, had no immediate comment.

Court documents do not name the clinic where Masood worked, but a LinkedIn page for a man with the same name and work history says Masood has worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, since February of 2018, first as a research trainee but has been a clinical research coordinator since May. A profile on researchgate.net says he has done research in cardiology;he was scheduled to present his research for the Mayo Clinic School of Continuous Professional Development in October 2018, according to an online calendar of the event.

Mayo Clinic spokeswoman Ginger Plumbo said Masood formerly worked at the medical center, but "was not employed by Mayo Clinic at the time of his arrest." According to an affidavit supporting the criminal complaint, Masood said in February that he was going to notify his employer that his last day of work would be March 17.

The affidavit said the FBI began investigating in January, after learning that someone, later determined to be Masood, had posted messages on an encrypted social media platform indicating an intent to support ISIS.

On Jan. 24, Masood contacted one of the informants on the encrypted platform and said he was a medical doctor with a Pakistani passport and wanted to travel to Syria, Iraq or the northern region of Iran stretching to Afghanistan "to fight on the frontline as well as help the wounded brothers," the affidavit said.

He explained that he wanted to make the trip because he "hates smiling at the passing kuffar just to not make them suspicios." The affidavit said kuffar is an Arabic term meaning nonbeliever or non-Muslim. Masood also allegedly told the informant heand get killed ... and kill and get killed."
At one point, the informant set up a video conference with the second informant, whom Masood believed to be an overseas commander who could vet Masood to fight for ISIS. Masood allegedly told that informant he wanted to be a combat medic and fight, and had been ready to go for some time.

Roughly three dozen Minnesotans — mostly men from the state's large Somali community — have left Minnesota since 2007 to join al-Shabab in Somalia or militant groups in Syria, including the Islamic State group. Several others have been convicted on terrorism-related charges for plotting to join or provide support to those groups wanted help getting to the front lines. When the informant said Masood might have to kill people, Masood replied, "i want to kill and get killed ... and kill and get killed."

At one point, the informant set up a video conference with the second informant, whom Masood believed to be an overseas commander who could vet Masood to fight for ISIS. Masood allegedly told that informant he wanted to be a combat medic and fight, and had been ready to go for some time.

Pakistan shifting coronavirus patients to PoK, say activists.
Kashmiri political activists have rebuked Pakistan for shifting coronavirus affected people from the eastern province of Punjab and the rest of the country to Mirpur city in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The activists said that the Pakistani establishment was deliberately spreading the coronavirus to get international aid.

Nasir, Aziz Khan, a political activist from the PoK who is now settled in Switzerland and the spokesperson of United Kashmir People' National Party, condemned Pakistan's move to shift coronavirus patients to PoK, despite it having a lot of free areas and hospitals.

"As soon as coronavirus started spreading across Pakistan, they did not take it seriously. In Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK), there was only one positive case. Confirmed cases of coronavirus from Punjab province are being shifted to Mirpur city of PoK. Here, there are no basic health facilities and they have to take their patients to other parts of Pakistan for treatment. Some patients die on the way to hospitals due to poor road infrastructure", said Nasir.

The activist said that there is no laboratory in the PoK that could do basic blood and urine tests.

"In Pakistan, there are better hospitals as compared to PoK, but they are shifting coronavirus patients to this region. When the locals started protesting, they were harassed," he said.

Nasir also said that "27 people were brought here on Monday, of which 13 were coronavirus positive. The results of the rest of them are awaited. Locals said that there are plans to shift hundreds of other patients from Pakistan".

The activist further added that it was unacceptable that they brought patients from Punjab and the rest of Pakistan to Mirpur and PoK.

"We want to ask Pakistan government if they don't have the infrastructure including hospitals and doctors in Punjab. In the last 73 years, you have failed to set up a good hospital and a lab in PoK," he said.

"The coronavirus patients in Pakistan should be treated there only. There is available infrastructure in Pakistan. We have informed the international community, including the WHO and the UN that PoK is a disputed area and Pakistan has no right to shift coronavirus patients in this region," the activist added.

According to Pakistani publication dawn.com, 990 cases have been confirmed in the country so far while seven people have died.

Pakistan-based LeT, not ISIS, behind Kabul gurudwara terror attack: intel sources
In a fresh development, Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) is learnt to have orchestrated the grisly terrorist attack at a Sikh gurudwara in Kabul on Wednesday, which left 25 people dead. Indian intelligence sources have revealed that LeT, led by 26/11 terror attacks mastermind Hafiz Saeed, “wanted to attack Sikhs and Indian diplomats visiting the Sikh holy place of worship.”
The gunmen are reported to have stormed the gurdwara in Kabul and opened fire at the people inside.

Actually moving suspected Corona infected persons to POK will (rightly) give pause to thoughts of India taking over POK when Pakistan is at its weakest, and rest of the world is focusing on their own Corona battles. Though I doubt that the Pakis would have thought much about this aspect - their instinct must only have been to move away the suspected patients far away from Pakjab.

Plan maybe to make PoK as Corona hotspot and then let international aid pour in there through Pakistani ports. What that may do in the minds of International Organization's is to make Pakistan's stand on PoK as de-facto. Also, the added advantage of keeping their Pakjabi heartland safe.

The only problem is no other country is in a position to give aid other than China. Everyone is busy saving their own population. This will only alienate Kashmiris from Pakis. As usual, yet another tactically brilliant, strategic suicide plan from Pakis.

From the 'Such Gup' section of today's Friday Times:
Terrible times

An eyewitness, travelling from Multan to a village nearby saw a grizzly sight which turned her stomach. She says there was a putrid corpse lying on the roadside, swollen and smelly, with people avoiding it by miles. She stopped at a safe distance to ask what had happened. Anxious passersby said that the dead man had been a coronavirus patient and people were too scared to bathe and bury him. What terrible times we live in.

Hindus denied food supplies in Pakistan's Karachi amid COVID outbreak.

Amid COVID-19 outbreak, thousands of poor people gathered at Rehrri Ghoth in Karachi to receive food supplies and daily essentials. However, those who belong to the Hindu community were told to go back since the rations were only meant for Muslims.

Sindh government issued an order to distribute ration lockdown through local NGOs and administration to daily wage workers and laborers.The distribution of food supplies was organized by local government in collaboration with the district government.

Hindus were told that they were not eligible for having food supplies since it was only meant for Muslims, said activists No screening arrangements were provided for nearly 3,000 people who had gathered to collect rations. The total number of positive cases of COVID-19 in Pakistan has risen to 1,559.

Hindus in Liyari, Sachal Ghoth and other parts of Karachi as well as all over Sindh are being denied a share in government food and rations if they happen to be Hindus.

Dr Amjad Ayub Mirza, a political activist has warned that the minorities are now faced with a serious food crisis and asked the Indian government to send supplies via Rajasthan to Sindh(An attempt to collect jiziya). He appealed to PM Modi to intervene without delay to avert a humanitarian crisis in Sindh. There are more than half a million Hindus living in the Sindh province of Pakistan.

The relief package is about 3 times the Pakistani defence budget (7.6 billion USD). About half the total budget (42 billion USD). Slightly more than total revenue (20.8 billion USD). For comparison, the Indian defence budget is 65.86 billion USD and total budget is 430 billion USD. Note that debt servicing and pension payments together exceed Pakistani federal revenue. Another fun fact is that pensions are in the Pakistani civilian budget but include military pensions (76 percent of the total pension liability). Basically the entire Pakistani government (including military) runs on borrowed money. They are well and truly up the creek without a paddle.
