Actually, CA is ranked 12th healthiest in the US at the end of 2018. There is some evidence that deaths due to C19 may have been happening CA before Feb. 2020.

Rony wrote: It is true that cleanliness is enforced to a great extent in everyday lives of Hindus and is seen as an important virtue. In most households, women will still not enter the kitchen without having a bath. Many Hindus in India consider it an important part of personal hygiene to have a bath each and every time they empty their bowels. Of course, there is the paradox of personal hygiene and public uncleanliness in India. But thats a different topic.
This is not a paradox, but rather the fact that waste water and sewage treatment in India is lacking. One of the reasons is that public infrastructure hasn't kept pace with economic and population growth, coupled with expensive energy (you need to pump large volumes sewage water and seperate it from the solids). Even before C19, other water borne diseases have been a problem. C19 may make the situation worse.

Fox News falls out of love with hydroxychloroquine
By Oliver Darcy, CNN Business, Wed April 22, 2020

Fox News has fallen out of love with hydroxychloroquine. After weeks of unrelenting coverage hyping the antimalarial drug as a potential game-changing treatment for the coronavirus, the network has all but stopped mentioning it on its airwaves. So has President Donald Trump.
The quiet abandonment of hydroxychloroquine comes as studies indicate it is not an effective treatment against the coronavirus. A French study found last week that the drug does not help patients with the virus. And on Tuesday, a study of hundreds of patents at US Veterans Health Administration medical centers found that patients who took hydroxychloroquine were no less likely to need ventilation and had higher death rates than those who didn't take the drug.

Obesity numbers, sure, but are you trying to tie obesity to Covid? If not, then broad statements like one state is healthier are pointless. They are "healthier" based on your chosen metric, I bet L.A. folks have more respiratory issues than someone in Wyoming thanks to that SMOG, does that make Cali less healthy?
Obesity is related to conditions that make one susceptible to this covid19. Eg. Diabetes.

SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Testing: Status Update
23 April 2020, 09:00 AM IST
A total of 500542 samples from 485172 individuals have been tested as on
23 April 2020, 9 AM IST. 21797 samples have been confirmed positive as
on 23 April 2020, 9 AM IST.

The samples confirmed till date is more than the crowd sourced https://www.covid19india.org/ till 9PM morning . By the way https://www.covid19india.org/ source their data from every state bulletin and as well as PTI and ANI .

The best real time feedback is given by Gujrat Helath ministry website https://gujcovid19.gujarat.gov.in/

where as Odisha Govt website https://health.odisha.gov.in/ gives the number of the number of RT-PCR & Rapid Tests separately

With ramzan starting in a day or so, expect more such incidents from this area

Mob attacks police, breaks barricade while violating coronavirus lockdown in containment zone in Malegaon
The police in Maharashtra was attacked by a mob at Malegaon in Maharashtra on Thursday. It was the latest instance in a series of lockdown violation in the state. In a video that has now gone viral on social media, the mob can be seen attacking the Police in large numbers before the Police managed to get the situation under control.

The Malegaon Police have said that action will be taken against the lockdown violators. The violation apparently occurred in an area that has been declared a Coronavirus containment zone. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Malegaon, Sandeep Ghuge told Mirror Online that so far around 115 people have been identified. The process of registering the offences against them under Section 188 (Disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 269 (Negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) and 270 (Malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) is presently underway at the Killa Police Station. “They have not only violated the curfew norms during the lockdown, but also endangered their and that of others’ lives by defying the social distancing norms,” Ghuge said.

Organized sector and agricultural sector can be somehow managed and put on some path to recovery with a combination of pay cuts and bailouts.
However we can expect large scale rioting from people employed/unemployed due to being in unorganized industrial sector.

Oxford group says vaccine by Sept and already manufacturing in UK, India and CHina
FOURTH TO ENTER CLINICAL TRIAL PHASE

ChAdOx1 is only the fourth Covid-19 vaccine candidate in the world to enter the clinical trial phase. But what separates it from others is the minimum time it will take to deliver mass quantities.

The other three contenders besides the Oxford group -- two American and one Chinese -- are expected to take at least 12 to 18 months to mass produce the vaccine.

Prof Gilbert said her team had been working on a Disease X, a name "given to an unknown disease which was going to come and cause a pandemic in future, and we needed to plan for it."

"With ChAdOx1 technology, already 12 clinical trials have been conducted against different diseases; we consistently see a very good vaccine safety and very strong immune response with single dose, while some other vaccine technologies such as RNA and DNA need two or more."

TEAM CONFIDENT ABOUT TRIALS

The Oxford team is so confident about its vaccine that it has already started manufacturing it, even before the clinical trials.

Oxford's Prof. Adrian Hill said the team was confident about the trials. He said they didn't want to reach a stage in September when trials were finished but they didn't have a vaccine.
We have started at-risk manufacturing this vaccine -- not on a small scale but with a network of seven manufacturers in different places across the world," he said.

"We have three manufacturing partners in the UK, two in Europe, one China and one in India," he said.

What is going on in Gujarat? We need to get someone like Yogi ... The numbers are exploding
https://www.livemint.com/news/india/min ... 30257.html
The number of reported covid-19 cases in India rose by 16 percent over the past two days to 20,471, data from the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW) published last evening showed. This is a slower rate of increase as compared to the previous 48 hours, when the reported case count rose 19 percent to 17,656.

So far this week, the number of cases has gone up by 27 percent (between Sunday evening and Wednesday evening). This is slightly faster compared to the previous three days, when confirmed cases had risen by 26 percent.

Although India’s covid-19 trajectory has tapered slightly over the past couple of weeks, it continues to be steeper compared to Asian peers such as Japan, Indonesia, and Pakistan.
At 4,248, Maharashtra leads in terms of the number of active cases of covid-19, according to the health ministry update on Wednesday evening. Active cases exclude deaths and recoveries from the list of confirmed cases.

Gujarat has the second most number of active cases (2,033), followed by Rajasthan (1,546). At 1,498 active cases, Delhi has the fourth-highest number of active cases, closely followed by Madhya Pradesh (1,364). The top five states together account for 67 percent of the active cases nationally, and the top ten states account for 92 percent of all cases.

Nationally, the active case count was 15,859 as of yesterday evening. These are early days yet and the state-wise distribution could change in the coming days. Testing across states has been uneven and as testing gets ramped up, more cases could come to light in states where reported cases have been low so far.

After this point the viral load actually goes down because the immune system controls it. To me it is a signal of deep programming of simpler minds with conspiracy theories that mixes victimhood, alienation, anti law and order, superiority complex etc. to try and make a political force.

On the good news front- at least in TN the trend has been reversed. Recovered patients are a lot more than new patients reducing the active count. Praying that this trend remains till we get rid of this virus in a couple of weeks from most of india

The cause of the death should be mentioned in the death certificate, government should analyse whether an unusually high number of deaths are being registered and if cause of death follow similar patterns. Atleast for MH this data should be online making the task easier. The only problem is WB, where I am not sure if such tasks are online, or even if online the aam abduls bother with paperwork.

Looks like blood clotting is occuring in 30-40% of patients in US leading to deaths.

A mysterious blood-clotting complication is killing coronavirus patients
...
One doctor replied that one of his patients had a strange blood problem. Despite being put on anticoagulants, the patient was still developing clots. A second said she’d seen something similar. And a third. Soon, every person on the text chat had reported the same thing.

“That’s when we knew we had a huge problem,” said Coopersmith, a critical-care surgeon. As he checked with his counterparts at other medical centers, he became increasingly alarmed: “It was in as many as 20, 30 or 40% of their patients.”
...
Autopsies have shown some people’s lungs filled with hundreds of microclots. Errant blood clots of a larger size can break and travel to the brain or heart, causing a stroke or heart attack. On Saturday, Broadway actor Nick Cordero, 41, had his right leg amputated after being infected with the novel coronavirus and suffering from clots that blocked blood from getting to his toes.
...
“The problem we are having is that while we understand that there is a clot, we don’t yet understand why there is a clot,” Kaplan said. “We don’t know. And therefore, we are scared.”
...
Although there was no consensus on the biology of why this was happening and what could be done about it, many came to believe the clots might be responsible for a significant share of U.S. deaths from covid-19 – possibly explaining why so many people are dying at home.

In hindsight, there were hints blood problems had been an issue in China and Italy as well, but it was more of a footnote in studies and on information-sharing calls that had focused on the disease’s destruction of the lungs.
...
Harlan Krumholz, a cardiac specialist at the Yale-New Haven Hospital Center, said no one knows whether blood complications are a result of a direct assault on blood vessels or a hyperactive inflammatory response to the virus by the patient’s immune system.

“One of the theories is that once the body is so engaged in a fight against an invader, the body starts consuming the clotting factors, which can result in either blood clots or bleeding,” he said. “In Ebola, the balance was more toward bleeding. In covid-19, it’s more blood clots.”
..
Early data from China on a sample of 183 patients showed that more than 70% of patients who died of covid-19 had small clots develop throughout their bloodstream.
...
Some medical centers have begun giving all hospitalized covid-19 patients small doses of blood thinners as preventive measures, and many are adjusting doses upward for the most seriously ill. The challenge is the more you give, the greater the danger of upsetting the balance in the other direction and having the patient bleed out.

Didier Raoult's Response to VA "Study"

In the current period, it seems that passion dominates rigorous and balanced scientific analysis and
may lead to scientific misconduct. The article by Magagnoli et al. (Magagnoli, 2020) is an absolutely
spectacular example of this. Indeed, in this work, it is concluded, in the end, that hydroxychloroquine
(HCQ) would double the mortality in patients with COVID with a fatality rate of 28% (versus 11% in
the NoHCQ group), which is extraordinarily hard to believe. The analysis of the data shows two major
biases, which show a welling to be convinced before starting the work :

The first is that lymphopenia is twice as common in the HCQ groups (25% in the HCQ, 31% in the
HCQ+AZ group versus 14% in the no HCQ group, p =.02) and there is an absolute correlation between
lymphopenia (<0.5G/L) and fatality rate
, which is well known (Tan, 2020) and confirmed here : 28%
deaths, 22% and 11% in the HCQ, HCQ+AZ and No HCQ group, respectively. Lymphopenia is the most
obvious criterion of patient severity (in our cohort, lymphocytes in dead individuals (n=22, mean ±
standard deviation, 0.94 ± 0.45), versus in the living (n=2405, 1.79 ± 0.84, p < .0001)). As the authors
acknowledge, the severity of the patients in the different groups was very different, and their
analysis can only make sense if there is a selection of patients with the same degree of severity, i.e.
the same percentage of lymphopenia
.

The second major bias is that in an attempt to provide meaningful data, by eliminating the initial
severity at the time of treatment, two tables are shown: one table where drugs are prescribed before
intubation, and which shows no significant difference in the 3 different groups (9/90 (10%) in the
HCQ group, 11/101 (10. 9%) HCQ+AZ, and 15/177 (8.5%) in the group without HCQ, chi-square =
0.47, ddl = 2, p = 0.79), and one table, where it is not clear when the drugs were prescribed, where
there are significant differences. These differences are most likely related to the fact that the
patients had been intubated for some before receiving hydroxychloroquine in desperation. It is
notable that this is unreasonable at the time of the cytokine storm, as it is unlikely that
hydrochloroquine alone would be able to control patients at this stage of the disease.

Moreover, incomprehensibly, the “untreated” group actually received azithromycin in 30% of cases,
without this group being analyzed in any distinct way.
Azithromycin is also a proposed treatment for
COVID (Gautret, 2020) with in vitro efficacy (Andreani, 2020), and to mix it with patients who are
supposedly untreated is something that is closer to scientific fraud than reasonable analysis.
Altogether these 3 voluntary biases are all pushing to the idea of dangerosity of hydroxychloroquine
safest drug as reported on nearly 1 million people (Lane, 2020).

All in all, this is a work that shows that, in this period, it is possible to propose things that do not
stand up to any methodological analysis to try to demonstrate that one is right.

485172 individuals have been tested and 21797 found positive (latest ICMR update), giving a 4.5% positive rate (lower than 5.7% at the start of
the lockdown). Even that is skewed by the very high percent of positives from the TJ group.

Cause of death given on certificate is often vague like cardiorespiratory arrest .. Here we are interested in knowing covid status of deceased.. I suspect disease is spreading in some areas and people living there are simply trying to hide it for reasons unknown to me.. Govt must be knowing unusual rise in burials in certain areas.. Heroic efforts will be needed to halt spread there.. Unfortunately this is not happening and suddend spurt of cases is reported from neighboring districts..

CEO OF WORLD'S LARGEST BIOTECH COMPANY SAYS SOME CORONAVIRUS ANTIBODY TESTS ARE 'A DISASTER'
BY EDDY RODRIGUEZ ON 4/22/20 AT 4:33 PM EDT

The chief executive officer of the world's largest biotech company said Wednesday that some coronavirus antibody tests are "disaster."

"It's a disaster. These tests are not worth anything, or have very little use. Some of these companies, I tell you, this is ethically very questionable to get out with this stuff," Severin Schwan, the CEO for Roche Holding AG, the world's largest biotech company, told reporters during a conference call Wednesday, according to a report by Reuters.

"Every kind of amateur could produce an antibody test. The two of us could do it overnight in the garage. That's not the problem. The question is, does it really work? And for that, you have to do testing and validation," Schwan said.[..]

Though the continued high number of cases in Mumbai is a disappointment, I believe we have peaked (in terms of number of new cases/day) a couple of days ago ,when we also reported 1600+ cases. The way I look at it as that there are 16 states with 100+ active cases. For the past week only 3 of the 16 have grown by over 10% over the previous day. Today it was only Maharashtra. I believe all the other states have reached their peak no (new cases per day). Delhi, TN and Rajasthan (among the top 5 worst hit) recovering as many patients as their daily new cases. If we can get Mumbai under control, we have beaten this.

Anything CNN says needs to be taken with a truck-load of ..
I will await the ICMR's study on the matter before coming to a conclusion either ways.
The VA study dissing HCQ and ZPak combo seems to be flawed and the Dr leading the study seems to have questionable motives. I continue to see board certified MDs on the front lines in the U.S. share anecdotal information on how HCQ seems to be effective. The key seems to be that it wont help patients that are critically ill about to go on ventilators. If given to people with mild/moderate symptoms it seems to prevent disease progression to perhaps prevents patients from even having to get admitted to hospitals. Remdesivir may prove to work for people with more severe disease. While everyone needs to wait for the final FDA double blind clinical trials data we have to keep an open mind on HCQ for now.

Patients did NOT receive zinc, the element that disrupts coronavirus activity in infected cells.
The study has not been peer-reviewed.
The drug combination was administered to 368 patients.
HCQ-treated patients were predominantly elderly black male veterans with comorbidities (other chronic, fatal diseases). The control group was composed of less compromised patients.
The comorbidities included heart disease, asthma, liver disease, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and cancer.
The study’s author, S. Scott Sutton, specifically states that the study is not a clinical trial.
Sutton has been paid to author three studies for Gilead Pharmaceuticals, maker of remdesivir, a drug in trials to treat COVID-19.

Gilead’s stock price has gone up significantly since February, when remdesivir was identified as a potential treatment.

Its unlikely that we are near peak of Covid epidemic in MH at least.. Expecting much more cases after lockdown is lifted.. I thank God that this disease is killing so less .. Actual death rate should be less than 1%..

Don't make these kinds of "famous last words" statements saar. If we get Mumbai under control, we would have beaten the initial wave, using the strictest possible means available to us (total lockdown). What happens when the lockdown is lifted? What happens starting in August/ September? The behavior of the 1918 flu is not encouraging, it came in two or three waves.

Achieving herd immunity is the end goal. Locked-down areas don't achieve this. Repeated limited exposures followed by fresh lockdowns - that's the game India or any other country is playing, when it tries to "gently flatten the curve." The positive fractions seem like good news (4.5%) but that might indicate that the country is that far off from achieving herd immunity. People who think that the only objections to lockdowns are from selfish economy-vadins, don't get this.
