Chinese Tech Stocks Hit Hard By Trump's Executive Order Targeting TikTok And WeChat, Lose Over $75 Billion In Value

Chinese tech stocks lost more than $75 billion in value on Friday (Aug 7) after U.S President Donald Trump signed two separate executive orders giving American citizens 45 days to sever all relationships with WeChat, owned by Tencent Holdings , and TikTok, owned by ByteDance.

The shares of Chinese company Tencent Holdings fell 6.8 per cent, the most in nearly two years, within hours of U.S president Donald Trump signing an executive that bars U.S.entities from transacting on WeChat, the hugely popular social media behemoth. WeChat is a messaging, social media, and electronic payment application owned by Tencent Holdings Ltd.

Tencent’s shares, which are listed in Hong Kong, plunged as much as 10% but slightly recovered to be down by 6.8%.

Before Trump’s latest missive, Tencent shares were trading near a record high and the company’s market capitalization had been close to that of Facebook Inc.It is China’s second-most valuable listed company after Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.

It would be really interesting to see how the numbers have been over the years, both figures from individual agencies and a poll-of-poll if such a thing is possible.
I will take a shot at it. With one other person on this forum, we have been diligently following MOTN (and it various variations) for the last 15 (?) years. I believe it has been going for much older time than that. They sometime put out surveys of the top 20 cities only.

The polls have been very representative. You could see in 2009 (do not remember 2004 polls), UPA popularity was almost steady in spite of 26/11. In UPA -2 times, NDA was lagging, then the graphs suddenly turned, the turning point was during Nirbhaya movement. And NDA slowly inched passed the UPA popularity. We knwo the final result. Similarly, in 2019, NDA led UPA in popularity with a decent margin. We all know the result.

I would say, they are fairy accurate to tell the 'mood'. Their seat conversion has no meaning, it is just a data point.

^ This health card business should not involve the citizenry standing in a queue for 5 days non stop in panic mode outside a surly government office to fill in their details.

I have experienced similar all India exercises for the Aadhar card and PAN card, for Passport Verification, , for Electricity Bill payment, etc.

If the powers that be mean business, they will use the existing records created during Aadhar and already avbl Bank Details to create these cards, (everyone has bank account or Jan Dhan zero balance now, correct?) and release it online thru your email id (link with OTP in mobile is one way) or some such convenient means.

They should coordinate the various government departments and get this work done, to restore faith of the common man in these exercises.

+1. All great ideas but this GoI continues to miss on understanding of bureaucracy and implementation. Bureaucracy is not being cleaned up to successfully get lot of this done. And enemies aren't dumb that they don't know that you're creating venues to track them. With the support of bureaucracy and opposition parties, they are always one step ahead.

That's one thing about Modi and Co that I haven't figured out from his GJ days. While it's true that he won't eat, the part about not letting others eat never materialized. For Modi and Co it always looks like excitement about threading the needle than disrupt the status quo when it comes to gov't institutions. From love jihads to EJ networks in tribal areas to liquor mafias to islamists terrorizing buffer zones to encroachment to many other issues, while in GJ they always chose to work with the system than to destroy the system.

It had always been an open season on Hindus that too in land of Hindus. Stay awakened. Suspension is certainly not enough but it's a start. There needs to be cases registered to monetary losses to clear policy changes. Use Abrahamic constructs and demand eye for an eye from this lady. Make her follow her own religious edicts. Make her post all that's wrong with christianity.
Maharashtra: Mount Carmel school teacher Sunita Joseph suspended for hurting religious sentiments of Hindus
https://www.opindia.com/2020/08/catholi ... tra-akola/
On Saturday, the Mount Carmel Secondary And Higher Secondary School in Akola in Maharashtra suspended a teacher named Sunita Joseph for sharing a derogatory Hinduphobic Facebook post in the official Whatsapp group of school students studying in Standard VI (A). She had shared the post on Friday.

In the said objectionable post shared by the Mount Carmel teacher, a dog can be seen urinating near the idol of Lord Ganesha. The anti-Hindu post was also accompanied with a venomous caption “ Kutte ko pura Vishwas hai ya Patthar hai aur Kuch Nahin. Lekin pata nahin yah Baat Bhartiya ko kyon samajh nahin aati” (The dog is convinced that it is a stone and nothing else. But don’t know why the majority of Indians don’t understand this simple thing).

I am unclear as to how the government intends to achieve a database of comprehensive electronic health records of every citizen with 95% of healthcare providers either not using a computer/or not using a EHR system/or using local EHR system. Even in advanced countries with highly developed healthcare delivery system EHR interoperability remains a challenge, so it is will be interesting to see how the government intends to achieve this.

As for waiting in long queue and running from pillar to post, i'm afraid given our enormous population, lack of personal space and general impatience wait is something unavoidable. The aadhar system is still not fixed and any updates to your aadhar information continues to require waging a small battle to get a token at a aadhar service center, wait patiently only to be asked for 2 copies of copies, and then someone entering few keystrokes into a computer to update the information.

I have to say that right now the health card looks like a make work program to keep government employed.

Shouldn't it otherwise be a simple matter of sending all Aadhar holders a health card using India Post? The cases where people don't get one through the mail can be handled via the Aadhar centers.

Unless there is a national database of citizen AND births, naturalisations, deaths are reliably updated (call it NRC/NPR or whatever), any Govt scheme can be pilfered by the usual gangs.

Until then, requiring personal appearance and verification of identity & eligibility through Adhaar/PAN/Govt issued photo ID, is the only way to ensure the right and alive person gets the benefit of a new scheme like health card. Covid will make it painful, but if we don't do that, there will be large scale gaming of the health card system.

Rather than jumping the gun, why not wait till the details are announced. Why do you assume people will need to stand in line for the card ? For documents of the aadhar/PAN/passport genre, any country would require you to present yourself in person. I have never encountered any problems with any of these procedures.

For any goremint scheme, it is possible to have a 100-page thread listing all the possible ways it could fail or be undermined.

Yet, the only way to make things better is to get started with these things. Constructive suggestions delivered to the goremint (e.g., Mygov) will help, random grumbling and bickering don't.

If citizens don't discipline themselves, don't expect the goremint to be disciplined either. That said, I think the aam aadmi will trust Modi on this. Grumbling is mainly an internet exercise.

So far, most of Modi's schemes (JDY/DBT, Digital UPI/Bhim, Ujjwala, Sandaas, Bijlification, Ayush) have been rolled out with high efficiency and little corruption.

Is there a purpose served in passing judgment of or criticizing something that is not even released ?

Thanks KL Dubey, for injecting that necessary dose of sanity.

Moaning on an online forum days before anything is even known, is pointless and not worth reading.
If you encounter an actual problem, report it to authorities via Twitter or another medium and get feedback from them to have it resolved, and then mention that here - that is truly participatory involvement no one would hesitate to respect you for.

Saar, this kind of problem is eminently solvable, the Govt. after all has 1000s of database experts on their rolls.

It's an engineering problem , with well understood solutions.

An example:
For citizens updation of healthcare records, every one of these health care bodies capture 2 -3 vital pieces of information that will enable easier record creation - the patient's name and date of birth, their weight and blood group.
I'm very sure that 100s of Dinesh Kumar's , a common enough name, may not be born on the same day, with same blood group in same district and weight... (Statistically, these are 4 variables, and all 4 holding true for large sample size, you understand....)

Even if so, other factors will kick in like address, insurance details, PAN no. for hospital payments, etc which can distinguish one Dinesh Kumar from the other quite nicely.

Saar, please, this is possible and doable, it's not rocket science, which is an area we are actually quite good at.

If this is RSBY and has been in in place since 2007 at least. It has been active for all BPL population accross the country with mobility. This is a smartcard based system with biometric authentication.

It is a very efficient system with extremely low costs and a robust fraud and abuse management system. The website has all the relevant details for people who want to learn more about the system and procedures.

http://www.rsby.gov.in/

BTW, it was integrated into the PDS by Raman Singh government by 2012 making it easier for the PDS beneficiaries, along with making monitoring near real-time. I.e end of each business day.

If this is being made accessible to general population it will be a different thing.

Guys, can this be a backdoor for NRC? a healthcard should contain patents details, birth date minimum. I am sure it eill be linked to aadhar for health scheme so there too we have given our details.
Making it mandatory and something with health even "kaagaz nahi dikayange" gang will also stand in line to get it.

It's not designed to act as NPR.

It is based on SCOSTA technology. It is already used for the driver's license and the registration certificate of motor vehicles.

Having said that, no reason why it cannot be used for NPR. As these cards are typically based on the census data.

It looks like a stone thrown NPR way but enemies in conjunction with bureaucracy won't allow lot of headways.

As far as the healthcare, GoI should first start with handling of fake medicine to charging of arm and leg. When one reads people spending 16lacs to get coronavirus treatments, there's lot that GoI needs to learn from Twitter suggestions. May be one should mail in suggestions to GoI to actually start reading Twitter suggestions.

Not to worry regarding the cost of treatment for this plan.

RSBY was quite able to function within a limit of 30,000/-. With nearly 1200 procedures covered for treatment.

Am quite sure that something similar can be arranged for this plan as well.

PS: I was a part of the team which executed RSBY project in one of the states. Between 2012 to 2015.

My next vote to BJP will be there if they also issue a card holder free of cost.
EPIC, PAN, DL, Aadhar, Health Card ... BPL people also have credit card size ration card. The list goes on.

In addition to this, every Tom, Dick and Harry GoI department has some card.

Crude joke apart, GoI needs a full time IT minister of cabinet rank. All these '"my card of the season" tomfoolery must stop.

Good interview with Shri Rajiv Malhotra on a range of contemporary issues: Ram temple, Chincom aggression, BIF etc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0yY5Ic9 ... e=youtu.be

One thing surprised me is that by his own admission, he doesn't seem to have a good relationship with current Indian govt. He was lamenting that MEA does not supoort him. He is is not looking for anything financial, but a govt of India stamp of endorsement will give him more access to power centers. He was also whining that ModiJi does not follow him on twitter :-). Whatever maybe the reasons, its sad that an articulate and talented guy like him is not used more effectively by GoI.

But that said, I was one of RajivJi's close friends when I used to live in Prionceton, NJ. But as he gained in stature, he developed a kind of shall we say attitude and ego that can at times be perceived as disrespectful. He once insulted me in front of many people when I tried to approach him during a SuSwamy event that he Emceed. Now, I know he puts his heart and soul into the work he is doing, and his gripe is that RW people like me do not put the effort it takes to fight the Dharmic battle. And instead either slavishly just follow him or demand his attention. A lot of truth to this IMO, but while he can afford to shoo away a non entity like me, but my guess is that his egotistic persona (well deserved no doubt) can put a lot of people off, like the very people whose support he needs.

^^ You have answered your own question saar - in the last para :)

I'd take his views of Chinese activities at the border with a large bag of salt - while his expertise in cultural sphere is unparalleled, it does not make him an expert in mil strategy. While I haven't heard this particular talk, a previous talk with Prof Vaidyanathan showed the limitations of his knowledge. But it didn't stop him from saying we should do this, do that, etc. Same goes for his presriptions of how we should deal with the economic fallout from Covid. Specifically, he dismissed Prof Vaidyanathan's responses reg govt policy and actions as anecdotal (while I can't the actual phrase, he used some term similar to pop-culture economics), while his own arguments were entirely built upon his anecdotal observations from the domestic help at his mother's residence. As a regular listener to his talks, I came away distinctly unimpressed, and was reminded only of SuSwa's snide comments about being ignored by the govt.

While Rajiv Malhotra's contributions in Indology are indeed great, he really should not have done that video with Nityananda on figuring out a way to determine future birth of a person and conserve his wealth till then. It has made him a laughing stock even among the Hindutvadi crowd.

The 2005 interview of Rahul Gandhi, which embarrassed the party so much that it was declared fake and Tarun Tejpal was asked to kill it
https://www.opindia.com/2020/08/rahul-g ... un-tejpal/
The Congress party has often been involved in influencing the media to ensure that the image of the ‘Grand old party’ and the family members that are involved in running it. From Jawaharlal Nehru to the current crop of Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, under the watchful eye of mother Sonia Gandhi and her cohorts, the Congress party has often had a complicated relationship with the truth and by extension, any media house or journalist that dares to write about the truth. One the prime examples of this complicated relationship is when a 2005 interview of Rahul Gandhi was killed by Tarun Tejpal of Tehalka because it embarrassed the Congress party.

In an interview to Zee TV, Vijay Simha had detailed how his interview of Rahul Gandhi in 2005, for the Tehalka magazine was killed after Tarun Tejpal was possibly pressured by the Congress party and its senior politicians.

How UP Police Saved A Woman From A Rapist Auto Driver And What It Tells Us About The ‘Muslims In Fear’ Trope
https://swarajyamag.com/ideas/how-up-po ... fear-trope
Two Muslim men kidnapped and raped a Dalit woman in an autorickshaw in the National Capital Region.

They also fired at the policemen when they came to the woman’s rescue on hearing her screams
These are strange times when a section of the media and other professional Muslim victimhood syndicates have dedicated themselves to telling us every day that the Muslims of India are a scared and vulnerable lot. This is puzzling because at the same time such articles are being written and demonstrations to the effect being held, several from the Muslim community are found to be lynching Hindu men if the latter’s pigs wander into their homes, killing and quietly burying into the ground their Hindu girlfriends, and kidnapping minor Hindu girls at gunpoint.

The propaganda has been particularly intense in the past six years and continues regardless of the ground reality.

'Trope' means an invalid mischaracterization, and in this context means they are questioning the claimed 'Muslims live in fear today' and 'Islam Khatre Me Hain' tropes - using the cases as an example of aggressive criminality that disproves the claim that anyone is 'fearful', besides the women being brutalized.

Randomly calling SwarajyaMag names is on par with what they do in TSP variously accusing people of blasphemy and demanding their arrest or lynching. Emotional blue on blue tirades against the center right ecosystem aren't welcome here.
